Wow, this just got significantly more interesting. Leno (probably) knew that if it were a US spec Focus nobody who knew anything about cars would give a shit. Now, we'll give at least 2. Or perhaps 1 1/2.
First, is there really a "red line" for an electric engine? A red line in a proper engine is a point beyond which the engine will likely be torn asunder. In an electric engine, its more limited by available amperage(I think. Electronics are witchcraft and wizardry IMO)
Without clicking through... There is a point for any rotating shaft at which harmonic vibration will tear it asunder. Provided you have the electromagnetics to get the armature rotating that fast, you would start making iron/copper powder above an electric motor's red line.
Will Mr. Leno, gearhead he is, have a replica of the TG course, or will it be something Americans have a chance of doing properly, i.e. completely enclosed so they're not bothered with staying inside those pesky lines painted on the pavement....
Perhaps Ms Barrymore was chosen for the Green Car Challenge due to her short-lived marriage to Tom Green.
This is one of those times when I think I should get cable/dish again when I stop being poor. A show where Jay gets to talk about what he knows and likes should be very entertaining.
Jay Leno had a fantastic quote from Monday's show. I'm paraphrasing, because unlike my friend I am unable to quote entire shows verbatim, but it was something to the effect of,
"Cash for Clunkers is a program where the government actually gives you money for turning in your old cars. I made five billion dollars."
But there's a catch: if you drive fast enough to go on the leaderboard, you wil not have enough charge to finish the lap, but if you finish the lap, you would have to have gone slow enough to outlast the duration of the show.
The best catch there is, Catch-22, you can't beat it.
For a plethora of reasons, I'm pretty well qualified to compare Ford and GM's business over the past two years (I'd hazard to say much more so than any here).
Given that, the only "large" difference in the two companies, and their plans, was Ford's prescient move to borrow a TON of money at the end of 06, and sell JLR while people could buy. Had they not mortgaged everything to the hilt, they would be in the worse shape out of the two. Perhaps this should provide some perspective?
That said, this PR piece is totally pandering to the green-hypocrites in Washington, and not the key to their success. They'll succeed by improving the normal, non-hybrid, non "gee-whiz" tech cars over the next few years. Havings seen up close nearly all those cars, it will work.
Ford also announced the 2012 introduction of the Battery Electric Vehicle- Manual Overdrive or BevMo!. The BevMo! offers additional benefits over a BEV vehicle, such as Buy one charge, get a second for 5¢ or Charge Kegs for parties.
In response to this announcement, Trader Joe's issued, in a press release, notice of the 2011 release of their own brand of electric vehicle; Two Buck Truck.

So, I know there's not a rat's chance in hell that the Focus RS will come to the US. I already made the Ford "banned caller" list for insisting.
So I called Jay, and asked if he could "make a phone call" or two.
So now, when people see this gorgeous Focus doing the rounds, there will hopefully be more Focus zealots calling Ford!!!

Call it luck if you like, but either way, it was a better move.
