"Look at that guy in the Prius. So smug. No way he's just some dude who, like 99% of the world, just needs a car as an appliance and who just happens to want to not burn a lot of gas. And thought it was worht the price for him.

Totally behind the cyclist on this. If he's riding for environmental reasons, he's covering the check with his own sweat equity. That's dedication. And he's a single-seat vehicle that's running at 100% capacity, four times better than the Prius, probably. Takes up less space on the road, doesn't tie up parking spaces, etc.

Prius guy needs a swift bicycle-kick in the ass.

It sucks that he was hit, and I'm glad that he's OK.
But, it REALLY annoys me when cyclists insist on riding in the middle of the street, and when there is an empty sidewalk on either side of the road. People like that MUST accept that their doucheyness may get them killed.

Moral of the story; there are sidewalks, use them.

I got pulled over for doing 35 on the sidewalk in a 30 zone, cop wasn't sure how to proceed, since I was 13. Let me go with a warning.

@wojo-the newly visible man-ardi: Sure-- riding on the sidewalk puts pedestrians and yourself in danger. Riding on the road puts yourself in danger, but at least your moving in the same direction as the danger, behaving like the danger around you.

Reading this and some of the comments leads me to two conclusions:

1. The government won't deny licenses to anyone but the most moronic of drivers so they can get them on the roads and the tax rolls. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that this "driver" fell through the cracks.

2. Oinkers can catch you doing 5 mph over the speed limit but can't catch hit-and-run drivers. Sometimes I think the more law abiding you are, the more you have to worry about dealing with the police.

I never really learned to ride a bike (actually I was too poor growing up to afford one) but I feel that maybe growing up less fortunate saved me the fate of becoming a douchie bicyclist. I had one tell me a while back that my "giant tin can" and "chair on fast wheels" will kill me and it will be my own fault.

I laughed at him, but wanted to kick his ass for being so smug.

@underwear-ninja: Hey, I can't afford (well, could afford, but can't justify) a new bicycle. I've got a few, beaters all, one of which has served as my usual mode of transportation for several years (I'm eighteen) and gets probably forty miles a week put on through recreational riding. And yes, I beat the hell out of it. It's gotten one new tire, a couple of tubes, and some chain lube, and it's damn near indestructible. If I really cared, I'd adjust the shifter a bit because it occasionally misses, but what do I care? It doesn't owe me anything.

People suggesting we kill all cyclists or have environmentalists fight it out (because the guy on the bike definitely voted for Nader?) or that he had it coming because he dared use the road for its intended purpose...

See, another reason why I ride something that is neither fixed gear, nor single speed. I see these kids riding to campus all the time and they clog the bike lanes with their poor abilities to go at a good speed, let alone maintain pedaling without being beaten to death by their bike.

I on the other hand am a harder target as I'm usually at the same speed as traffic.

Although I did have some lady try to take me out in her WRX wagon, sporting an obama sticker no less. Figures, those people are the first to throw their own under the bus anyway...
