I'm so glad I don't rely on that bridge for anything. I'm also far enough south that I shouldn't be affected. Not many people who planned on using the Bay Bridge are going to detour all the way to the Dumbarton, I think. #baybridge

It's been sucking for quite a while. They have been doing construction there for the past year. The exits/mergers are short and have poor visibility, they keep changing it around, people get confused all the time. And sometimes they close the Jackson Street onramp to 880S so it's either take the next exit and u-turn.

The Bay Bridge and Golden Gate are the same age, but why does one seem more prone to incidents? What is the lifespan of these bridges anyway? #baybridge
@87CapriceEstate: different types of bridges end up having different problems. Even the west portion of the Bay Bridge is different than the east portion. The western suspension portion (like the GG) is fine. The eastern rigid type is falling apart bit by bit. #baybridge
@87CapriceEstate: Just from memory, the rigid types are more prone to failure by stress fracture, but the maintenance is far cheaper than on suspension bridges. When work crews finish repainting the Golden Gate, they have start again immediately to keep corrosion away. Gets pricey fast. #baybridge
@87CapriceEstate: To calculate the lifespan of a bridge, simple subtract the year it was built, from the year it fails and there you have it! In this case, the bay bridge opened for traffic on November 12, 1936 so almost 75 years. The "NEW" bay bridge is right on time! (and probabaly not by accident....) #baybridge
After living in DC and Baltimore, and now residing in Upstate South Carolina, I find it extremely enjoyable to not have to constantly monitor the conditions on a half-dozen bridges and tunnels for my daily commute. #baybridge
@mechimike: I had to go thru 2 tunnels and a draw bridge each way which turned what should have been a 35 minute commute into a 60-80 minute commute. Finally I just moved 5 miles away from my office. #baybridge
I live right at the SF end of the bay bridge - there's no traffic here. (Most of it comes over the bridge, FYI.) I think the right taunt is "have fun all you BART commuters" but what do I know, I walk to work. #baybridge

Thats nothing. In Detroit we can blow up a bridge using nothing but 9,000 gallons of fuel in a tanker and some idiot not knowing how to safely navigate a turn at highway speeds. Then remove the debris in less than 24 hours.
