It would be great if SAAB could break free of the dead weight of GM that I can't see having benefited them much at all. And GM sure didn't know what do with them. I just can't see it happening successfully.
Maybe Volvo and SAAB can team up with FIAT, who just said they wanted a partner, and then you'd get Italian for Beginners...
@OG_: My parents leased one of these, which is the closest we ever got to having a Swedish car in the yard. Unbelievable that anyone else remembers it!
@Gearhead_42: They never lost the quirkiness (ah, cable clutches, DI boxes, engine sludge, disappearing emblems, flaming seats, etc, etc), just much of the charm.
@Gearhead_42: I remember having a whole lot of fun cruising in the old 9-3 Cabrio with my friends. We knew that it probably looked really gay with 4 guys in a SAAB cabrio, but that probably added to the Swedish charm of the car.
@Gearhead_42: The problem with that is that it would have been 245 or maybe you don't want a passenger side door, which would be pretty cool admittedly.
Our current cars are our 3rd and 4th SAABs. The "GMification" / decontenting of the brand has been quite sad. Calling the GM/SAAB customer service line is a training session for going postal. While my logical side truly understands the importance of saving GM, my experience with them says give the execs a pair of cement overshoes and a trip to the river bottom.
@dfwguy: I've heard the exact same thing from every single Saab owner I know. Usually with more spittle and obscenity, though. If the sheer vitrol and spite of customers could be converted into bankable assets, GM would be covered.
The US hasn't approved squat, despite all the headlines in the Detroit papers.
It's kinda like when you're 10 years old and trying to set up a sleepover at your best friend's house. You asked mom, and she said "well, it's OK with me but I still need to talk to your dad."
Sure, you can pack your sleeping bag up if you want, but it's not time to get in the car just yet.
Simply a matter of the proper bribes and pork barrel projects getting in place. There's no question that this package, and even more (yes, start the message board hand-wringing now) will be passed.

What else do they have besides Saab and Volvo? Is Sven cranking out some bizzarre, ice-powered supercars behind his local watering hole?

On the supplier side, there is [www.haldex.com] they make all wheel drive systems for everything from Volvo to Bugatti.

As much as I love my 9-3, I must admit to missing some of the quirkiness of the "real" SAAB years...

It's damn hard defending General Motors when talking to other Saab nuts.
They also all really seem to hate Cadillac.

Now write "Börk! Börk! Börk!" one hundred times on the blackboard (or message board of your choice).
