Am I missing something? Was the above copy lifted straight from some PR? Except maybe the four bar lights, this doesn't look anything like the BTTF truck. And at least as far as I was aware, the BTTF truck was nice, but was hardly anything drool-worthy. Wasn't it just a fairly ordinary Toyota with a roll bar and some lights? Maybe I just didn't appreciate trucks back them enough to notice. And that hasn't changed. I'd still rather have the DeLorean.

Other Movie cars to make out of their modern equivilant:

Starsky and Hutch Torino out of a Ford Fusion

The Cadillac Nick Nolte drove in "48 Hours" out of a CTS-V

The Homer out of a BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo

Chargeresque grille, wimpy bumpers, just not the same.

Even the graphics relied on a slab-sided square truck to work. Sigh.

This doesn't make me want a new Tacoma.

It makes me really, really want a clean '80s extended cab SR5 and three or four free weekends in the garage.

    Easily matched black paint: no
    Bulletproof 22R engine: no
No-frills zombie-ready equipment list: sorta - SFA gets you farther afield. Add three lockers for the ultimate mobility, only tank treads go farther.
    KC Hilites: yes
KC Hilites that can actually illuminate the path in front of you: no
Understated black steelie wheels: no, but basic white Ranchos are equally excellent.
Flyweight practicality: no. BTTF weighs in at 3700lbs of post-apocalyptic fat.

Verdict: good enough to drive, but not enough to want. I'll pay for the used 22R before I'll lay out for this. Sorry.

OMFG! That's the first Toyota pickup in close to two decades that i'd spend money on. Though mine is not an '85 SR5 extended cab, it has enough of the look to prompt people to yell, "McFly!" when i roll past.

And a solid front axle? Christ, pinch me...do it again...one more time, please.

But the real question is the rest of that truck warlord grade like the old ones?

    OK, quick comparo...
    Rims:
    McFly's '85 SR5 - Steel, black centers w/chrome lips.
'08 SEMA Truck - '80s throwback satin finish aluminum.

    Graphics:
    McFly's '85 SR5 - None.
'08 SEMA Truck - '80's throwback modernized with neutral tones.

    Bumpers:
    McFly's '85 SR5 - Large, burly double-tube replacements of OEM units.
'08 SEMA Truck - Thin wimpy strap-on jobs, not to same scale as truck.

    Show Bars:
McFly's '85 SR5 - Beefy double tube arrangement, tastefully complimenting bumpers.
'08 SEMA Truck - Single tube unit, tubing dwarfs that of anemic bumpers.

    Paint:
McFly's '85 SR5 - Deep Black, freshly waxed (two coats)
'08 SEMA Truck - Camry Beige, freshly... meh.

    Aux Lighting:
    McFly's '85 SR5 - qty 6 KC Highlights, base KC covers.
'08 SEMA Truck - qty 4 KC Highlights, '80s throwback smiley face covers.

    Performance:
McFly's '85 SR5 - Basically stock. C'mon, it's lift, tires, bumpers, and roll bar... and we all know the story on that V6, don't even think about drag racing any Tannens.
'08 SEMA Truck - Awesome, because that's why this truck was built, not to emulate some '80s movie ride but to eek every inch of performance out of the '08 Tacoma. Nice truck, poor benchmark. Marty's '85 SR5 was never the height of Toyota pickups, it just looked cool at the time.

@TimTim: Marty's truck was stock height - these things held 31 inch tires in stock form, one of the reasons for their high level of badassoisity.

I love that interior! The exterior needs two more KC Daylighters and a more badass SR5 sticker job - just order the ones for an 86 4Runner and you're there. Yeah, marty didn't have them but whatevs, I like them. And I'd ditch the solid front axle in the name of better tracking - it went away in 86 anyway and the trucks were still warlord grade awesome.

@TTopJohn: As the former owner of an IFS 1st-gen 4Runner, I will be the first to say with confidence that I refused to drive that thing over 65mph. It was absolutely horrifying. I can't imagine a solid axle being worse.

@TV's Paul Y.: I had a friend with an 87 Toyota Truck, turbo 4, IFS 4wd with CO-OP Grip Spur mud tires - the same beige as this Tacoma. On occasion he'd drive it on 800+ mile road trips. Probably not the best highway vehicle, even with the IFS. But a solid front axle is always going to be worse. Even as posh of a "truck" as a WJ Grand Cherokee with tiny stock sized tires requires a lot of steering correction on the highway.

@TTopJohn: Mine was an 89 V6, with cheeeep 31"s; I could drift from a standing start on dry pavement, since the tires appear to have been made of iron (which certainly didn't help anything).

I think I've just concluded that old-timey trucks have no business being on the interstate system, and that's that.

"...most call it the BTTF Truck".

Who is "most"? Mike Levine of PickupTruck.com? The 19 people who commented on the truck over at PickupTruck.com?

The only "people" that connect this truck to BTTF is Mike Levine himself. This is a perfect example of internet regurgitation, where someone digs thru their hard drive and reposts something they found on the web.

This truck is a year old. While it has an 80's retro feel, it has no design connection to BTTF except of what some e-writer says. Why are we seeing it again? Is Toyota out of ideas for SEMA 2009?

The project's lead and others at Toyota refer to it casually as the Back to the Future truck. When we were setting up the photo shoot, almost every conversation we had called it that.

The official name: Tacoma Truck Concept doesn't exactly grab you.
