@layabout: If I were elected president, I would do only three things. First, I would force Ford to import the Mondeo and Mondeo Estate, then force every American (I would hire Ninjas to convince them) to test drive one. Then I would give the Mazda 5 a 5000 dollar tax break. Because, if you buy an actual minivan, I mean, seriously. Just dont.** Then I would devote a huge hulking amount of Federal dollars to a national Autobahn System, because I can. Then I would standardize the crash test and emissions standards with Europe.
Then I would resign, and allow my V.P, who is of course Carmen Electra (Who else?) to lead our nation on to a bright and glorious future!
I love how in England the Avensis is a boring mid-management car, but take 2 doors off, change the name, and sell it in America and suddenly it's OMG AWESOME SCION TC BRO.
@pockygt: Been saying that for a long time. Pretty amazing what a single platform can do (another good one is the current generation Passat/Jetta/Golf/GTI, all on one platform).
@Pete Gaines: That information is well out of date, free company cars are a thing of the past. The cheapest way of getting a company car is working for the government, which my gf does.
Okay, seriously? How boring can this thing be? This thread is pushing forty responses already, this compared to the VW Scirroco R post that has been up all day and has just barely gotten itself past 30.
Obviously, there is some sort of entertainment value here.
On that note, I am surprised that this thread proved more popular than the VW thread.
I drove a '99 Avensis (first car I ever tested on the wrong side of the road). It was definitely bland, but not terrible.
Visually, these two look much nicer than most of the US Toyotas. That wagon is pretty nice...and we'll be stuck with the inevitably-4,000# Venza crossover instead.
@The Name's Ash78, Housewares: inevitably the quality of vehicle sold sold in europe has, historically, been higher than those sold here. So it goes to reason that the quality of their mediocre vehicles will be higher than the quality of the mediocre vehicles sold here.
That's more a comment on the absolute trash that Detroit foisted upon the American public for several decades than it is on the quality of the Avensis.
@Pete Gaines: My dad works for the state of California and there was definitely an AMC Concord at one point in my childhood. That was replaced by a Tempo. Now they don't give him anything and has to drive his personal Miata. Unsurprisingly, he doesn't complain.

It's a nice ride, actually. And the lease-backs, being both numerous and despised, are super-cheap.
Oh, yeah, 45 m.p.g. Don't drink the haterade.

A bottle of Paddy does wonders for a man's ability to accept the ugly. Either that or a crapload of dark beer.
On the plus, side, though, 45 mpg is pretty damned impressive.

I also like the Mondeo and maybe the Vectra better.

@pockygt: Amazing what a manual transmission, new body structure, springs and shocks can do for a car's character.
