Don't know what to do, so I start up the car, pull out of the garage, plant my foot to the floor...

I don't know why these Bugatti people put prices on these things. All I want is a comfortable commuter car, not a mirrored speed machine at any price.

Personally, AdmiralAutobahn, I wouldn't challenge them like that, or the Germans are likely to show up with a car made out of toilet-paper tubes, bits of string, and a long bent thing with a lump on the end. And it will probably still be better built than the Sebring.

I tend to agree with you in thinking that this is one of the most moronic things that I have ever seen, as I stated in an above response to Rust, but I have to admit, taken in the context of being a show of engineering skill, ANY Veyron is impressive.
The problem is that rather than back up its engineering skills with some actual credentials, such as entering a major organized motorsport, VAG just goes and does pointless stuff like this.

That is true, I neglected the Audi, which was indeed damned impressive, so much so that they are being restricted in the operational capacity on the track. And, to be fair to Audi, much of the technology used there is planned for implementation in production vehicles; Q7 TDI, anyone?
But I would be interested to see how any of the Veyron's technologies filter down in the years to come.

If VAG had a cock, would they have made this?
Or would they have focused the money that went it on something like, you know, starting their own F1 team in a bid to prove their technological dominance as opposed to showing that they have more money than brains?
This strikes me as the ultimate automotive embodiment of someone trying to compensate for being born one nut short.

Dear GM,
While you don't have enough money to keep running, we have enough to re-fit our self-serving and shamelessly egotistical museum. Not only that, but you remember that Veyron thing we made? The one that we LOSE two million dollars per car in making? Yes. Well, we made a spare, one that we don't even plan on selling, and then spent even MORE money to refinish it in a totally new mirror finish nobody has ever achieved before. Wanna know how much that cost? No, haha, just kidding, you really don't. And guess what we're going to do with that one. Use it for press promotions? Send it around to car shows? Feature it on a segment with Jay Leno? Wrong! We're going to park it in our hallway and LOOK at it. That's it. That's all.

You're missing the whole point of the Veyron.
A Koenigsignigsegnigsegniggnuggs... can do stupendous speeds, just like a Veyron. There are Vipers with more horsepower who might be able to do them as well. You could strip down an Enzo, tune the engine to the max, and you could probably get more speed as well.
The Veyron is purely, one-hundred-percent, about showing just what VWAG can do. It is not only a stupidly, outrageously, mind-numbingly powerful and fast car, but it is as easy to drive as a Passat. It is swathed in luxury, it is fantastically comfortable, and it makes no compromises. Anywhere. At all. It is luxurious, it is powerful, it is fast, it is comfortable, it is easy to drive.
Basically, if they'd make a Shooting Brake version of it, it would be the most perfect car ever made.

I would say that ridiculous curb weight it sports, is a compromise.
Give me an Enzo and a F1 for the same price as one Veyron.

I knew that it out-performed the Enzo in its sleep, but can it really take on a contemporary F1 car? When you speak of a car that is beautiful for making zero concessions in the pursuit of functionality, the F1 racer takes top marks.
They not only make zero concessions, they are right their in the ballpark with the Veyron in terms of power output, have a significantly lower thrust-to-weight ratio, and have vastly better aerodynamics. I would be inclined to agree that a Veyron would acquit itself well against an F1 car, but beat it outright? I'm not so sure.

Can you imagine the looks on the engineers faces when they got a checklist like that?
Most F1 cars max out at about 350 km/h. Admittedly, they can corner at faster speeds than the Veyron, but do they have heated and cooled leather seats? No.

I must admit that if I were the engineer given that checklist, I probably would have taken to the bottle upon seeing it.
I definitely agree that it is one of, if not the most, impressive displays of automotive engineering. Ever. I just can't rationalize it in any way whatsoever, let alone a chrome one. I suppose, though that there is indeed a certain artistic beauty to that, though.

That's why it took so long for a company as capable as Volkswagen to engineer it. That's why it was completely revised near the end of its initial development.
Anyone can do fast. Just look at Dauer 962 or the 911 GT1 Strassenversion. I'm sure with a little tweak and some gearing change, they can do 253mph relatively easily. But they would be impossible to live with.
What Veyron is the epitome of engineering perfection, the superb balance of compromise.
...except for the balance in the bank.
