Celebrate The New Year With A New Auris
Those crazy folks at Toyota sure now how to party. This new year they're going to be debuting a new top-o-the-line Auris SR180 (the Auris being the hatch version of the European Corolla Hatch, and a social disease common in the West Indies). This range topper comes with a 175 horsepower 2.2 liter diesel that scoots the little hatch to 62 mph in a respectable 8.1 seconds while still producing 45.6 MPG in combined cylce driving. Oh, and of course you can get it in the Pure White paint job, which the press release describes as "über-cool." Photos and press release below.More »

Toyota Builds Excitement in Japan With Blade Master G
While Toyota's been following the US-market line of boring car buyers into a vegetative state, then taking their money, in Japan they're playing mix-and-match with stuff in their parts bin to quicken buyers' collective pulse. In Japan, Toyota's offering a hotted-up version of its Blade hatch — itself a sportier variant of the Corolla-based Auris hatch. Removing the Blade's standard 2.4-liter four, ToMoCo replaced it with the same 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 as powers the Lexus IS350 in the US. The result is the Blade Master G. The hot hatch produces 276 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. The engine swap puts an modest extra 176 lbs on the Blade's front section, which Winding Road surmises will likely give it the nose of a 1989 Barolo Monprivato, though not quite in those terms. A six-speed sequential auto with paddle shifters, 17-inch alloys and a deeper-inset grille complete the package. Nodding off is likely not an option. [Winding Road]

I'll Cut You: Toyota Launches Blade in Japan
Toyota launched its new Blade hatch in Japan earlier today. Named not for the weapon of choice among Yakuza assassins of past decades, rather to "suggest an automobile with a 'sharpness' that fascinates people" (hmm), the Blade is a swank version of the Auris, which will is essentially a hatchback'd Corolla. It's got an interior swaddled in leather and alcantara, a 167-hp 2.4-liter four, and despite its mock-violent name, it's targeted to those approaching retirement. More important for our purposes, however, are rumors that a 280-hp, hot-hatch version could follow next year, sporting Toyota's 3.5-liter GR-FE V6. Dare we dream of a Toyota? More »

T(u)RD Kit: The Toyota Auris Sportiva
We just showed you the new Toyota Auris the other day and folks were already lamenting the plain-Jane upgrades available for Toyota's newest entry into the euro C-segment market. Without a performance upgrade, how could Japan's A-plus number one bestest automaker compete with the VDub GTI's of the world? Well, the folks in Toyota's aftermarket speed-freak shop, Toyota Racing Development (TRD), are already getting their body kit action on — so at the very least you'll be able to kit up your Auris to look like it's got the horsepower to match what the rest of the kiddies have. And don't worry — it'll still look that way when they're a mile ahead of you too. More »

Vibrant Clarity: Toyota Reveals Auris for Europe
With little in the way of fanfare (other than a quick e-mail), Toyota revealed the production version of the Auris C-segment concept it showed off in Paris last month. The new Auris hatch, which was designed at Toyota's new European design center under the company's new "Vibrant Clarity" design language, is built on an entirely new platform, and will sport a range of gas (1.4, 1.6 liter) and particulate-fiiltered diesel (1.4, 2.0, 2.2) engines. Six-speed manual is standard, with paddle-shifted MultiMode transmission an option on models with the 1.6-liter gas and 1.4-liter diesel engines. Europeans will get their first eyeful at the Bologna show in December, with sales set for spring 2007. [Gallery] More »
