The :60 Audi spot at least made more sense than that :30 last week. Regardless, it was a weak concept. The Genesis Coupe spot had a lot more kinetic energy than the Audi spot, but there's something about a Hyundai burning around the track that leaves me unmoved. Maybe too much Top Gear has numbed my senses to that kind of ass-out sliding around and lipstick-cam POVs.

BUT< they pale in comparison to the horribleness of the other ads during the game. Geez, it seems like only getting hit in the nuts or thrown out a window can get a laugh these days.

And what was up with that Jack in the Box getting hit by a bus ad? WTF?

I did like the careerbuilder ad, and would now like to punch a Koala.

this one was definitely better. as for the Lexus '90s era...was Tommy Boy the best movie they could come up with to be on the marquee? It's a great quotable movie but i think they could've done better. otherwise, pretty well done.

@BraappBraapp: Some Assembly Required!: I've got a 1989 Tempo. It was a barn yard find, to a degree. Very low miles and in immaculate condition inside and out. I contacted the owner after happening upon it in 2005. At that time I was looking for a small, fuel efficient American car with four doors. I haven't the slightest idea what my original attraction to this little car was back then, but the owner was more then glad to have me haul her off for free. A new battery and a jump start to my '93 Blazer and the Tempo started up. To this day, I haven't any try valid reason for loving this shitty old Ford as much as I do. Maybe its because I nursed her back to health. Maybe the uncountable hours of fixing odds-and-ends that have gone wrong. Maybe its the way she drives (incredibly good fun). Its the only car I've owned or driven that brings such a stupidly loving smile to my face just by driving her, and I've owned 350 small block equipped Chevy's. By no means is the Tempo a great car, but it makes me happy, and thats all that matters.

@Ford Tempo Fanatic: Old farmers love their Tempos. They never go faster than 40 and take half a day to get there. They also love their Pintos, Omnis, and Chevettes. All these cars are still running around in the rural county where I work. Even a Vega. If you want a car, any car , to last forever, get youself an old farmer

@61fury: Heheh, right outside the shed the Tempo was in, there was a 1961 Ford Model 600 tractor and a c.1941 International-Harvester Model A1A. I helped the guy repaint and refurbish the Ford later that year. New paint job, new SW gauges, new carburetor.

@SCROGGZILLA RAIDS COMMAS!!: This commercial didn't really do much to change my lukewarm feelings towards Audis, but it gives me the uncontrollable urge to buy (and hoon) a Mercedes W108 and a BMW E28.

Also, the W108 that they crashed was a 280SE 4.5-- the coolest kind!

Love his expression when he spots the Lexus. I also like how proud Audi are of their new S6 being better than a 25 year old BMW 5 series. Good advert though, Statham himself does/did own the previous generation RS6.

Am I the only one who thought the Genesis Coupe spot kicked Audi's ass last night? The best part was explaining to my kids who The Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan are.

FWIW, I'm sure that Scott Keogh and the various parties associated with this spot couldn't care less (did I get that usage correct?) about my opinion, but the work is really weak. And that's a shame, because the cars are very good.

It's all what I like to call "fonts and mirrors"...where the production quality is supposed to make up for the lack of a good, clear, core concept. Seriously, just watch that VW Jetta spot from years ago. Amazing. And it's not even an original idea...basically an homage to The Graduate....

The Genesis spot at least made me curious. Got the blood flowing a little. This Audi spot, not at all. Man, even the Leno spot with him in the Cobra was better.

They could just show the A6 bombing the 'Ring and it would have been 100% better.

Here's another just about perfect spot, IMHO:

@Al Navarro: I can't recall who VW's agency was back in the late 90s and early 00s, but they did amazing work--I believe they were responsible for that VR6 spot. Then they changed a couple years later (~2003) and I haven't really liked it since.

I was in the agency world at the time (acct service) and all the writers and art directors were very complimentary of that stuff, as well.

I think that years from now, when Ray's kids are running Jalopnik, this spot will not be included in the pantheon. And that VW Jetta spot will be.

I'm open to someone trying to convince me that these "Transporter" spots are any good. Last year's "Godfather" spot, too. They both stink, IMHO.

A reminder to newish people that A) I am in the ad business, and B) I used to pen reviews of ads here before they tired of me...

@Al Navarro: Sigh! I had front row seats for the supposedly farewell tour for The Rolling Stones back in '96. Texas Motor Speedway: Matchbox 20, The Dave Mathews Band, Smashing Pumpkins, and The Rolling Stones. When The Pumpkins finished their set, half of the teenage concert-goers rushed the stage and were promptly kicked out. I lamented to my friend as to why those kids would do something to get them thrown out before the main event. My buddy shook his head and reminded me that all of those kids did not give a rat's ass about Mick and Keith and the rest of The Stones. I felt old that day, and even more so hearing that your kids don't give a rat's ass about The Pumpkins...

@Al Navarro: You got it wrong on the Godfather spot, for sure. That's one of my favorite ads. The purpose is obvious: Audi is here to slay old luxury brands.

Of course, it's hard to like an ad for a product you don't appreciate. (And I know you've got no love for the R8)

Your Porsche ad does little for me. The car's a browish beige and it's not doing anything a Civic couldn't do. If the kid's all hot and bothered for the car, it's for all the wrong reasons.

(But then again, I've got no love for 911s).

If you go back to my rant on the "Godfather" spot, it was the use of the "Borrowed Interest" tactic that really got me down. Again, contrast with the Ford GT 40 spot...which was really inspiring (IMHO) and showcased the product without resorting to movie homages....

Also: I've never seen the Godfather films, but obviously know about that scene. Given that, the ad doesn't feel like a cheap knockoff of that scene or anything to me.

Which is worse, to copy an idea (VW) or a specific scene (Godfather)?

I admitted the Graduate reference homage somewhere here this AM.

I just happen to be more captivated by that VW spot. Especially considering it's a mere Jetta! The R8, to my way of thinking, deserved much more than it got in that GF spot.

The speech that led to the horse's head being in the bed:

"You don't understand. Johnny Fontane never gets that movie. That part is perfect for him, it'll make him a big star, and I'm gonna run him out of the business - and let me tell you why: Johnny Fontane ruined one of Woltz International's most valuable proteges. For three years we had her under contract - singing lessons, dancing lessons, acting lessons. I spent hundreds of thousands of dollars. I was gonna make her a big star. And let me be even more frank, just to show you that I'm not a hard-hearted man, and that it's not all dollars and cents: She was beautiful; she was innocent. She was the greatest piece of ass I've ever had, and I've had it all over the world. And then Johnny Fontane comes along with his olive oil voice and guinea charm, and she runs off.
