Audi pulled out because Porsche was pissed that they couldn't win any other way and were looking bad in front of their core market - the gold chain and tassel loafer set.
Just wait till Porsche finds out that Nissan's figured out how to run a GTR in LMS1...
But seriously, how much more could Audi win in ALMS? And Peugot is scared to run there. There was good racing between team mates, but that's sort of like always kissing your sister. Or so I've heard, but I'm not from West Virginia. But I digress...
I also think IRL and NASCAR are the only two big series here because of the notion that our audiences (especially on TV) want to see close, homogeneous races.
You guys are forgetting why VAG is even in motorsport. The R series TDI's are development vehicles for pushing technology. They have no interest in a series that is just about 'fair racing'. They wanted to prove the superiority of turbodiesels, and they have done that handily. I believe they decided that their image is better enhanced by the novice Jetta TDI Cup racer series, which will translate to more sales anyway.
You'd think Audi would have a thick skin when it came to the "leveling of the playing field". I'm thinking of the weight disadvantage they were required to carry in the Touring Cars.
All I can say is that this sucks. I was looking forward to seeing those cars "not-roaring" around Belle Isle this summer. Alas.
'Twas three weeks before Christmas, when all through the league Not a creature was stirring, completely fatigued; The rule book was hung by the lockers with care, In hopes that Volkswagen's teams soon would be there; The diesels were coming to rock the whole class, Several years running they've kicked lots of ass; With limited funding and increasing costs, Audi grew fearful of sooty exhausts, When out on the field there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Just to see Audi escape in a dash.
Le Mans is about the only series that I still enjoy watching in the US, mostly because of the Audi's, but I guess I'll do my best to enjoy watching it without 'em.
@grzydj: Uh, it's pretty easy to enjoy ALMS where, you know, there's actually racing going on. I like the Audi's too, don't get me wrong, but they have made LMP1 pretty damn boring lately (the last decade or so). LMP2, on the other hand, was very hotly contested, as was GT2- those were a lot more fun to follow this past year than either GT1 or LMP1.
I am sad that our much anticipated Acura v. Audi fight never will happen in LMP1, though. A real shame, that would be fun to watch.
Audi have a habit of walking away when the rules don't suit them, the left DTM when they were told they couldn't use 4wd. I vaguely remember issues with the Audi engines at previous LeMans.
@layabout: On second thought, wasn't there a recent rule change that capped maximum pit stop refueling based on the energy content of the fuel, thus eliminating the diesel economy advantage?
@layabout: I think Wankelin_for_a_Rotary got it right. The new rules don't suit them, but why should ALMS penalize them for winning? Why should DTM ban 4WD if it gives an advantage? I seem to remember 4WD giving a huge advantage in the WRC when Audi (again) introduced the Quattro. Did the WRC ban 4WD to make it fairer? No, other manufacturers developed 4WD cars in order to compete. That's the way it should be.
@mwood10: Like all motor sports there are rules,Audi can't sulk just because the rules won't fit them. Just like when group B rally was banned, Audi chucked their toys out of the pram again & went home. If all the other teams can go by the rules then why can't Audi? Personally i wish they'd make a rally comeback as that's another motorsport that's going pear shaped. I agree with what you say,but sadly the people in charge of most motorsports seem to hate teams developing cars.
@layabout: Sorry dude, don't agree at all; I'm here because it's an Audi article, but I'm disagreeing out of principle.
The point I think you're missing is that it's not that Audi can't go by the rules. Remember, they are going by the rules. Then, when they're successful because they try something so much smarter than anyone else, the race league specifically changes the rules -- directed at them -- to cripple their advantage. Fuck that noise, the other teams need to step up their games! As mentioned above, this has happened many times before, and I think any team that says "Fine, fuck you, we're out of here" has the right idea. I believe that's how the dominance of the Ford GT40 was finally ended. The race leagues need the car companies much more than the car companies need the race leagues, and it's just a matter of time before they start realizing it.
Maybe we can convince Audi that they should be joining the American LeMons Series instead.
LeMans did the same thing to Mazda when it kept winning with the rotaries. Technology and superior design be damned, we have to make it /fair/ for everyone.
What is this, the kindergarten playground?
Audi pulled out because the ALMS was making it harder and harder to compete with their car that was, God forbid, winning.
At least ALMS didn't just outright ban their engines, like they did Mazda.
"What's that? Tommy, it's not fair that you trained really really hard and can run faster than all the other boys. But don't you worry, we have a solution! The nurse is going to hold you down and we're just going to take Mr. Hacksaw here and cut you off at the knees! It won't hurt a bit, other than the years and years of training, effort and money you have invested in yourself! And then it will be fairer for all the other, less able boys. Won't you like that, Tommy?"
@Wankelin_for_a_Rotary: That's the common refrain but I don't they banned rotaries specifically because of Mazda's winning ways. The 787B won a single Le Mans after years of futile attempts...and even then the Group C beasts from Jaguar and Sauber were fully competitive.
Okay, so maybe organizers got a little scared, saw the stripped down motor with so little wear, and nipped rotaries in the bud, but that should be compared to the experiments with turbines (a near win), 4WD (again, a near win) in Indy racing and six-wheelers in F1. I'd some a fair bit of prejudice was involved, too...
Don't get me wrong, Mazda totally deserved that 1991 victory (it was glorious), but they were never dominant at La Sarthe like Audi has been. And I believe that rotary ban no longer exists.

Multiple classes? (ALMS)
Staggered starts? (WRC)
Run-away victories? (F1)
That's a lot of work for our camerapeople!
