So if you're going to go to all that work, why not make the bumpers that much closer to the real thing, and get rid of the droopy bits on either side?

Doesn't look bad at all for a replica. Now, though, I've got to make my '97 Mystique (same chassis) into an S4...

Is the 2001 Cougar the new Fiero? Will we start seeing Cougtachs and Cougarrari Enzos? One can only hope, for the sake of Murilee's crack pipe posts.

For those annoyed with the drivetrain: There are interesting options available for this car.

This replica still has the 2.5 liter Ford Duratec (good for 200HP in Contour SVT trim) - but the 3.0 liter Duratec is a popular bolt-in swap. And there's a decent selection of go-fast goodies available for the 3.0.

Surprisingly, AWD isn't a pipe dream for this car: The new Cougar is essentially a shortened, two door Ford Contour/Mondeo chassis - which was shared with the AWD Jaguar X-type. If you stumbled across a wrecked X-type with a good drivetrain - and had access to a well-equipped machine shop - AWD is a possible upgrade.

@Phil L.: Aha, so I WAS right about being able to drop in a 200-horse, common-or-garden Taurus Duratec! Thanks.

Beware the man with the scarlet 8Я on his forehead, for he has wrecked his poseur Audi, and the airbag has branded him for the world to see.

Not bad for homebrew. And now I'm inspired to pull together my own scratchmade supercar; I've got a couple of pints of sour cream about to evolve into sentient life in the fridge, so I think I've got the building blocks for a Yugo GV.

Much like any well made replicar, it looks good on its own, but I can't get past the stigma of it being a fake [insert high end car].

If the Audi R8 never existed, this would be a sharp looking rebody for a sad FF Cougar.

As the R8 does exist, I can't help but feel that this guys talents could have been better spent elsewhere.

I can't see shelling out for a Fauxdi R8 when that money could buy a car that would turn as many heads, and drive better than a Cougar. $50k will get you a real Ferrari 308, an early Esprit V8, a Lamborghini Jalpa, a used Viper, a used Acura NSX, etc. You will get all of the attention, and won't have to hang your head as you say, "it's a Mercury Cougar"

@smalleyxb122: Any car pretending to be a car that it really isn't is lame, no matter how good (basement Lambo) or bad (Fierrari Enzno) the underlying car is. Even scratch-built cars should not try to be what they aren't.

Yes, Factory Five and Thunder Ranch, this means YOU, too.

If the guy weren't selling this kit commercially, I'd be applauding his eccentricity and skill. But leaning on tradedress/trademark infringement for profit?

I especially like that it has those big-time ugly Audi wheel arches. Horrible looking. I'd say almost worse than the non-circular ones you can find on old Opels:
