Didn't anyone here ever read the original Fleming books? The original Bond was almost a tragic figure.

@Pete Gaines: When did truth and/or sticking to the story matter to Hollywood? "Highlander", "Rob Roy" and "Braveheart" all Scots based tales/history and all played by non Scots. David Niven starred in the original Casino Royale and he was Scottish but played it as a bon viveur. There are numerous other stories/folklore/historical events that have been pureed for the masses so that they are easier to digest. Thank God for Miramax et al that put out good cinema.

@Pete Gaines: Where the hell is Dominetta to join in on this one?

I loved the books, for that very reason. Bond, while suave and cool, as in the movies, also had a dark, self-destructive trait to him that still hasn't been properly portrayed in any film to my mind. I think Timothy Dalton -- and now Craig, to some extent -- portrayed this well, but it hasn't always been received well.

In the books, Bond was a hard-drinking, somewhat sado-masochistic character. He was angry, vengeful and vicious. He drove his Bentley like he stole it, he regularly broke the rules, and those surrounding him had a mentality unlike that in the movies. The movies give them an attitude of, "Oh well, you're our superstar, do what you like." In the books, it was more, "You suicidal twit, you're going to get yourself killed."

Mind you, it's been a few years since I read them, but I remember being struck by the noticeable difference.

I haven't seen either of the two newest flicks...I'm still pissed off that Clive Owen didn't get the part. We needed a darker Bond, not a prettier one. IMHO.

@The Name's Ash78, Housewares: While we're at it, Connery never really made much sense to me as Bond. Yes, I realize he was the original.

    He's Scottish.

The Craig movies are ostensibly better movies than many a recent Bond flick, but it feels like they've lost a bit of Bond-ness. They've traded gadgets for incredible fight scenes.

@Mad_Science: Connery had the chauvinism down pat; he lived it in real life. However, today's Bond has little room for such sexism and chauvinistic humor. Therefore, someone a bit more serious, Daniel Craig, is now a better fit.

What the hell is MPD? Clue me in - it would help clear things up a little as my brain is marinading in some the new world's fine wine.

@BЯдΖǐL-ЯЄРΘЯΤЄЯ - Salutes all Bronx Mowgli: Not officially, but any moment now. As it sat at the end of October, Porsche owned about 75% of Volkswagen, which owns about 75% of Audi, which owns something like 90% of Lamborghini. As a result of Porsche's takeover of Volkswagen, they are not required to submit notification to European regulators of their intention to take over Audi and Scandia. This then, I believe, has to go to a vote of the shareholders. Who are mostly Porsche.
