Pretty much all new cars in the US are classified as LEV.
ULEV, you're getting somewhere, that's "cleaner than 50% of new cars."
SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle--what a name!) is the real player in the game. A car classified as SULEV is cleaner than 90% of the cars on the new market.
The Prius? Well, that's an AT-PZEV, stands for advanced technlogy - partial zero emissions vehicle. PZEV classification is given to cars that meet SULEV and also have no evaporative emissions from the fuel system, and AT is appended for hybrid cars.
On top of that, the amount of pollution/environmental damage done by a car is weighted something like 4% construction, 96% everyday usage. So the gas your Civic drinks over my Prius does require more "further destruction of the earth" than mine in the end anyway.
And the batteries are all recycled.
Right, I think that about covers it...

What I don't like is uninformed banter about the Prius's "economic infeasibility" or "environmental unfriendliness", because it's misinformation and it's nonsense. If your facts aren't straight or if you read something somewhere, that's fine, but I don't want you to have to keep living in a lie, you know?
If it makes you feel any better, I fully intend to drop an Oldsmobile 455 or similar into the back seat in a few years and belch blue smoke into the heavens.

A lot of the time the California versions of cars will be PZEV whereas they'll settle for SULEV in the regular market, or something. The Prius is an AT-PZEV everywhere.

My take on the Prius debate is "Chill, it's just a car. It's not necessarily an indication of smugness or any other character fault."
And don't forget to save some hate for the BMW and 'Vette jockeys, too.

Except with the hybrid battery packs, the metals are easier to clean up and recycle, since they're all contained in the battery.

Are there roving hordes of rude, self-righteous Prius owners that I don't know about? There are tons of Priuses (Prii?) around here and the only drivers I hate are the ones who buy M3's with automatics, and the ones who buy '09 Tahoes to drive their toy poodles around.
