Well, I hope those folks enjoy their huge trucks when gas goes back up to $4 a gallon and they're faced with the choice of filling up or feeding their family.

The sob story doesn't sound quite as convincing when it's coming out of the mouth of somebody commuting 40 miles each way in a shiny new 12 MPG 2-ton triple-cab ultra Super-Duty Quadruple-Ram-Hemi-Ironman-Truckmax Off-Road Ultimate Steer-master Rancholo Gold-edition pickup.

    You'll be sorrrrrrrrrrrrry!

@☠GяяяRRR!: Yup. To those too stupid to realize...Fuck them. They whined about $4/gal gas and now we have a slight drop and they think the good ol days are back. Wait until gas goes up to $6 and it takes $200 to fill the trucks again. I'll feel the pinch, but it won't be devastating to me. The idiots who drive around in their Chevy Silverdildos and Dodge AssRams will not be smiling when they pull up to the pump of death.

@sos10: Or maybe somehow the people you think are 'dumb' for some reason have enough money (read more than you) to not have to worry about gas prices and all the other bs scare tactics and buy the car or truck that they want to drive. It's not you and it's not your choice. It is however a free country. So until they run you over or something, you have no input in this matter. (not picking on you specifically, just everyone who shares your view)

And realize that whether someone (thinks) that they can afford gasoline is not the problem. Plenty of wealthy Chinese can afford ground up tiger's teeth and rhinoceros horn for potency, but that does NOT make it a good idea.

Since these are comparing October last year versus October this year, seasonal effects would be eliminated.

I'm wondering if there is a seasonal effect involving fleet sales here.

Any small business owner in the snow belt who needs a new pickup is going to buy in the fall, so their old truck doesn't have to survive another winter...could that be enough to cause a temporary surge in sales?

With fuel prices back down there is no need to drive a tin pot econobox when you can enjoy driving your monster truck...

the days of the econobox are dead again!

Wait a minute, the Impala and the Crapolla/Matrix are for kids both have higher sales in October '08 than in the same month '07? WTF? Are they being bought here and shipped to Dubai? Are they made out of Government cheese and are being given to the impoverished?

Geez, and I'd hate to be an Accord right now, that's a 36% drop year over year. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

@philibuster: Indeed, fleets. Drove one of Hertz's 2008 Impala LTs cross country in August and I have to say it was a pretty damn good car overall. That 3.5 liter V6 had no problems getting 32+ mpg on the flatlands and had plenty of grunt for passing/merging and blasting over mountain ranges.

Inside was quiet and comfortable, except for some weird aerodynamics that required a bit of juggling with the rear windows when driving with the front windows down, in order to avoid a deafening buffeting resonance inside the cabin. But I seem to remember a lot of other sedans having similar quirks.

While not a fan of FWD, I'd like to try an SS with the 5.3 liter V8, as the same motor propels my 500lb heavier Silverado with authority. Would be a fun car for road trips I bet.

@cabjf: I can't vouch for a rental pickup, because it will cost you in the end. I rented a base GMC from U-Haul, with the promise of $19.99 a day (plus mileage). That rental, 2 days later ended up costing over $380.00 when the mileage was factored in. I went to pick up my LeMons heap, and here's the proof:

This make an interesting point, and reminds me of a poignant quote I read once...I think it was from an econ professor at the Ludwig von Mises Institute: Evil will always triumph over Good, because Good is dumb.
