Last year, the gossip mill started churning overtime: Alfa Romeo was building a new Alfasud. Talk was that Fiat's mid-premium brand planned to introduce a small, entry-level model on a Fiat platform that could wear the erstwhile Alfasud badge. Now, Carscoop says the car is a go for 2008. And that means the Photoshop predictions are flying, like the one above from Italy's Infomotori. (They've got more, too.) The soon-to-be model will reportedly be getting a version of Fiat Group's new 1.4-liter turbocharged four. Though we doubt Alfa would include the car in its brand's late-decade US marketing push, it could still round out a premium hatch genre comprising Mini Cooper and Volvo C30. Maybe a US model wouldn't be such a terrible idea after all.

<![CDATA[Is Alfa Romeo Working on a New Alfasud?]]>

Since the Bologna motor show earlier this month — where students from Turin showed off an Alfa Romeo small-car concept — gossip has flown about Alfa Romeo's intention to produce a new Alfasud, a small, sports minded car to compete with the new Mini. With an iconic name Italian car nuts (of a certain age) associate with a quick, nimble entry Alfa, a new, B-segment Alfasud would likely be a premium small car with a sporting brand message. It could also be built on the new Fiat Grande Punto platform, which launched successfully this year. With Alfa's imminent return, it's not out of the question we could see a model like it in the US by decade's end.
