I've seen more Alfa-Romeos in LeMons than I have on the road. In my lifetime.

(Keep in mind that I was born during G.H.W. Bush's presidency, and that's probably why.)

@MushyHeirloom: Same for me. There used to be people who lived around the corner from me who had an Alfa sedan, and there are a couple Spyders, but other than that they are crazy rare. I think living in the States has something to do with this, too.

@MushyHeirloom: There are several nice late-model Spyders around here. I saw a really well-kept Milano on the road a few weeks back and managed to resist the urge to follow it so I could shake the owner's hand.

@gman1023: You're right, I take that back - in the US, in my lifetime. I saw more Alfas, Citroens, and other oddities in two weeks in Scotland than I ever expect to here.

@jaymcminn: Cool! If you see it again, try to get photos?

@MushyHeirloom: I'm pretty sure I've never seen a roadgoing Citroen in the flesh. A few Renaults and Peugeots used to be around, but those are crazy rare nowadays. There is this place near me that has a gaggle of Merkurs, both Scorpios and XR4Tis. It's tough to tell from the road, but it appears there are at least 6 of them, and I've only ever seen 2 cars running from that place. Sounds like the appropriate ratio.

Would be nice to see one of the Milanos win, place or show. I'm still hoping the Caddy can get in the top 10 anyway.

Fascinating. How did a 98' Impreza squeak in without BS laps. It's no BMW 540 but it's still no $500 car

@ferric oxide: I was wondering the very same thing. Maybe it got some token number of BS laps and made them up? Maybe the team had a really good bribe? Perhaps the Saucy Minx™ will tell us in her own sweet time...

@ferric oxide: Subie parts sell for surprising amounts of money. Could very well be a $1000 car that they were able to sell, and document, $500 worth of unnecessary crap.

I have a question - do all these spare parts fall under the $500 rule? I mean, having whole spare engines seems more like traditional racing to me (ie. big budget), which doesn't really fall under the heading of LeMons, in my opinion.

@Jeremy Wilson: Not when you buy parts cars for scrap value (or less; I bought a scrap volvo amazon for 1 cent once, on eBay). We're not talking new, fresh, replacements. We're talking "barely better than the crap we just took out" spares.

When it gets that major, you're really out of the competitive running anyway. It's mostly for glory/bragging rights/masochism.

A very kind Corolla FX16 team gave us their whole bag of old brake hoses, and luckily, with minimal modification, one of their spares fit the mustang caliper we're using.

I'm assuming that to change the head gasket in a Milano, you have to heat it until the two cookie halves come apart, scrape off the warm chocolate, then press a new piece of chocolate in the middle and reheat?

    gaskets overnighted from Virginia

Just curious, how does that, and mid-race replacements in general, work within the $500 rule? Head gaskets aren't "safety equipment."

To extend the question to absurdity, imagine I show up with mah rusty beat-to-Hell 3rd-gen Camaro, go out for a couple practice laps, whoops done forgot to put any coolant in and the block's fractured, but I'll just have a crate LS9 overnighted from Wixom.

@wkiernan: Contrary to lore, Milano head gaskets cost a good deal less than a crate motor ($41+ shipping to be exact). Unless that is the going price for a crate LS9 these days....

Hmmm, does not bode well as head gaskets are not usually a problem spot on later V6s (should know, got 5 of 'em). Hope they check the timing belt tensioner and water pump while they are in there so the timing belt stays healthy. And for Gawd's sake, bypass the fan switch so it runs full time and isn't dependent on the crappy Bosch sensor! Just wire it with a connector you manually disconnect for pit stops. That took out our first LeMons Milano.
