Can you believe we've never had a Honda Accord in this series? Have the early Accords become that rare? They sure have, which makes me sad; the first-gen Accord was a great car for its time. It was reliable, had fairly decent performance, was less cramped than its tiny Civic cousin, and- in my no-doubt-shared-by-few-others opinion- looked pretty good.

The Accord's engine had the same CVCC technology as the Civic's, but it displaced 1600cc instead of the 1488 of the Civic. With 68 horsepower, the Accord was no hot rod, but its weight of just 1,993 pounds- about 1,650 pounds less than the current Accord- kept it zippy enough to be fun. The price was pretty good, too: $3,995, about the same as the '77 Chevy Nova Concours and about 400 bucks less than a new VW Dasher hatchback.

It's always fun when I find a DOTS car with another one in the background, and this time we've got two: the '66 Mercedes-Benz 200D and the '76 Ford Mustang II.

<![CDATA[ Honda To Reveal Civic Hybrid, i-DTEC Gearbox Alongside New Insight In Paris ]]> While all eyes will be on the new Honda Insight hybrid, Honda will also show off a refreshed Civic Hybrid at next month's Paris Motor Show. Cosmetic changes are minimal — tweaks to the lighting, fascias and wheels help clean up the design and are expected to transfer to conventionally powered Civics in Europe. On the mechanical front, Honda will also debut the i-DTEC automatic transmission designed exclusively for Honda vehicles using the firm's 2.2-liter i-DTEC diesel engine. We're looking forward to full specs and drive impressions since a diesel Honda is anticipated on these shores next year, presumably with this new autobox pushing the wheels. [Carscoop]

<![CDATA[ Buy An Accord Coupe, Get The House For Free! ]]>

We dunno. Maybe, but where's the location of the house? Even in this depressed housing market, we still have to make sure we're getting something of value. Because although a late model Accord coupe might intrigue some, even a free house may not be enough to make us interested in the vanilla two-door. But hmm... since the resale on those seems to be pretty good at the moment, we might be able to flip it pretty darn quickly for a profit. Well, OK, we'll bite. But only if you throw in that pool table, the set of lawn darts and a free tank of gas. [Burbia via Digg]

<![CDATA[ Gas Prices Up 8.2%, Hybrid Sales Down 11.0% In May... Wait, What? ]]> no_sale_351.jpgThere may be no better indicator that many carmakers have been unable to adjust to the sudden increase in gas prices and the resulting shift in consumer demand than hybrid sales. Although there was an obvious run to more fuel-efficient cars — witness the Civic besting the Ford F-150 in overall sales for the first time ever — hybrid sales overall were down 11% from April to May, down 24.3% month-to-month from 2007 and even the market-leading Toyota Prius experienced a 31% drop in sales for the month. How did that happen? There are a few factors at work here, which we've helpfully outlined below the jump.

First off, there was an overall drop in vehicle sales in the United States — that's obviously going to affect sales of the largest fuel-suckers first, but the current economic situation affects anyone looking to buy right now, even in the hybrid marketplace. But the biggest factor isn't the issue of demand, it's supply. Toyota decided to only create about 175,000 Prii a year and is sticking to that number — mostly because their suppliers don't have the ability to quickly add capacity. That means despite the increase in demand, there just aren't any more to buy. The Camry Hybrid's seen a sales drop as well, because of this same supplier issue.

Comically, the biggest winner for the month were Saturn's hybrids — the Vue crossover and Auru sedan. Aura sales were up an astonishing 800%! Obviously since the Vue is a larger vehicle, it only saw a month-to-month increase of 750%. Unfortunately, due to some of their own serious supply issues, like battery leakage problems, 800% only translates to total monthly sales of 36 and 750% only translates to another limp volume number. Again, a supply issue.

Other hybrids also did reasonably well, including a 100.6% month-over-month increase in sales for the Nissan Altima Hybrid and a 3.5% year-over-year increase for the Civic Hybrid. But given that hybrid sales in the US for 2008 total only 155,958 vehicles, minor fluctuations make a big impact on monthly results. Overall, although hybrid sales are up 4.5% compared to the first five months of 2007, if neither Toyota or GM are able to get their supplier issues licked, we're not expecting it to start raining hybrids anytime soon. <![CDATA[ Civic Selling Like Flapjacks, Could Outsell Accord For First Time ]]> Holy gas prices, Batman! Automotive News is reporting this morning strong sales of the Honda's gas-sipping Civic were up 14.8% to 111,695 units through the first four months of the year, and appeared to be looking good for May. Although we'll find out what the fifth month had to say when sales numbers are released later today, for the moment, AN's Kathy Jackson is reporting that Dick Colliver, Honda America's sales chief claims he's expecting sales of 40,000 to 45,000 units during the month. That would be enough to top sales numbers of the Accord, the reigning sales champ from the number two super best awesome automaker from the land of the rising sun.

Despite still holding the title of Honda sales champ, the Accord's only sold 122,430 through the month of April. With Civic output up at all three of Honda's production centers — providing a total production run for the first four months of over 144,000 units — Honda's looking at a 48-day supply of the budget sedan, a position that's forcing a look at squeezing out as many of the little buggers as they possibly can. Given that growth curve, the Civic could very well pass the Accord this month or next in sales.

Which is funny to us, because it's not like the Civic sedan gets that much better gas mileage. We mean, this ain't the diesel Euro-spec Civic we played with back in February. No, the EPA numbers on the Civic are a mere 25/36 for city/highway. The Accord on the other hand has numbers of 21/31 for city/highway. While yes, that's a decent-sized difference, it's not enough to account for a 14.8% increase in sales on the Civic. Oh wait, we forgot — the Civic weighs in at a bargain-basement price of $15,645 for the four-banger with a five-speed slushbox. The Accord, with the same configuration, in comparison goes heavyweight on the price scale, selling for $20,995. Wethinks maybe this has as much to do with general economic fears as it has to do with specific economic fears on the price at the pump. It's a lot easier to pay off a car loan that's five grand cheaper when your house goes into foreclosure, ain't it?

Whatever the reason, we'll be watching for Honda's numbers later to see how the Civic fares, and whether it can beat it's big brother. Better yet for Honda, could the F-150 be much farther ahead (or behind)? [via Automotive News (sub. req.)]

<![CDATA[ 2008 Honda Accord Coupe, Part Three ]]> Why you should buy this car:
You've always bought Accords and the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe will merely be the latest. You don't know much about cars but you do know that you don't want to buy American. You fit the above criteria, but despite the physical onset of middle age you think you're too young for a four door. In reality, you're just too single. You're on the fast track to middle management and you want people to know it.

Why you shouldn't buy this car:
You know that driving fast isn't just about power. You want to buy American and that whole "Made in Ohio" versus "Assembled In Ohio" thing confuses you. You want a simple, well-engineered, economical, practical car. You work in any design-related field.

<![CDATA[ 2008 Honda Accord Coupe, Part Two ]]> Exterior Design:**
In places the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe is woefully bland, in others awkwardly edgy. And what's with the rubber strip running across the hood? Having said that, it packs space for five and their luggage into a reasonably svelte shape, we suppose that's something.

Interior Design:**
As seen here in EX-L trim it's possitvly posh. The problem is, the grayish plastic and cornicopia of buttions clash with the nice leather. Too much that you touch is cheap plastic, while what you look at is awkwardly unintuitive. The Sat/Nav screen resides several inches behind a piece of prehensile plastic and can't be viewed anytime the sun is above the horizon. The high waist-line makes for huge blind spots.

Acceleration:****
The 268bhp V6 does 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. That's ridiculously fast for a practical, mid-size car. 15 years ago this would have outrun most Porsches. We just wish it didn't try and light up the front wheels with such ferocity every time your right foot starts feeling heavy.

Braking:***
Everything you'll ever need, provided you don't need an ideal brake/throttle relationship for heel and toeing.

Ride:****
Unremarkable in that you don't notice it as it competently goes about it's job, absorbing all but the worst New York's roads could throw at it.

Handling:**
The biggest problem. Floaty and imprecise at speed, the experience is dominated by understeer if you slow down. Still, it'll get you where you're going safely and quickly, just don't expect to enjoy the experience.

Gearbox:***
As unremarkable as a six-speed manual could be. But, it's not an automatic, and that's something. First gear is ridiculously short, most of the time, second is fine for pulling away.

Audio:****
EX-L trim brings with it every audio function you could want, in an unremarkable and very buttony way that is.

Toys:***
If we could award stars for the number of buttons on the dash, the Accord's would stretch across the page. When you can see it, the Sat/Nav works well, the center mounted dial spinning through menus with ease.

Value:*
Ours was specced up to $31,145 with delivery. We'll take our $30k-ish V6 coupes in 350Z form please.

Overall: ***
You can't question the Accord's competence at everything it sets out to achieve, but you can question its motivations.

All the V6's silly speed does is make us long for a simple, no frills, practical sedan or coupe with solid engineering, good handling, a reasonably sized interior and good build quality. A Honda Accord if you will. Oh, wait...

<![CDATA[ 2008 Honda Accord Coupe, Part One ]]> The 2008 Honda Accord Coupe isn't immune to road rage. Driving back to Brooklyn on the LIE, scrunched forward on the steering wheel with a back seat full of reasonably-priced, but well-designed Ikea flat pack behind, I'm minding my own business in the middle lane, overtaking the law-abiders on the right but not the flouters on the left when suddenly the Accord's rear view mirror is filled with a chrome Isuzu badge. Not content with making the same progress as everyone else, the Forward Cab driver has settled on intimidating those before him in order to ensure he arrives back at whichever depressing industrial estate he's destined for at least 30 seconds earlier than he would have otherwise.

Sebastian, the semi-pro mixed martial artist rolling gently for and aft next to me, holding a stack of galvanized steel planters in his lap as his seat's latches fail to find purchase on the rails, looks on bemused as Mr. Angry charges past in a suddenly open gap on the right. Gesticulating wildly, the Isuzu driver swerves violently at us forcing me swing the Accord quickly into the fast lane; braking hard to avoid hitting the huge SUV that has no idea any of this is happening.

All of this hardly troubled the Accord. In V6 coupe form, the eighth and latest iteration of Honda's mid-size sedan is amazingly capable. Both fast and frugal, the 3.5-liter V6 is the largest and most powerful engine ever to find itself in a Honda passenger vehicle. In the coupe, Honda's ditched cylinder deactivation in favor of out-and-out performance. The 268 bhp is bolstered at the low end by both variable timing for its inlet valves and variable lengths for its magnesium intake manifold. Yes, this middle-of-the-road car now comes with magnesium engine parts.

Of course, Sebastian and I wouldn't have been out on Long Island shopping for fiber board storage solutions if we hadn't had a car we could have fit it all in. The Accord coupe's trunk is amazingly capacious for a two-door and while the rear seats don't fold down flat and the hole in the rear bulkhead is small and impractically shaped it does manage to swallow a surprisingly large amount of furniture named for obscure people, places and fjords in Sweden.

After the Isuzu moves on to torment the next car in a line of traffic stretching all the way back to Brooklyn, Sebastian observes that the driver, someone similar to us in age if not cleanliness, probably wouldn't have acted in such an aggressive manner if he'd encountered us on the sidewalk instead of the street. Bear with me; this car thing is all new to Sebastian, a recent émigré from Berlin, if not to you and I. More used to motorcycles and sports cars — vehicles intimately involved in their surroundings — it's something that I've always heard, but never understood. Until now.

Trapped in the midst of nothing but competence, a vast array of technology working to isolate me from its engineering to the greatest possible degree, I can suddenly understand where road rage originates. Driving down the highway, there's no grand visceral experience to separate me from the realities of moving through traffic. No engine that might not be fueling correctly or a potential stiff spot in my drive chain, there's nothing but the tedious journey ahead of me and those outside my cocoon making it longer. I feel empowered by the Accord's performance but separated from the experience of driving it. Suddenly, I'm not here for driving's sake, but for a destination that's increasingly taking longer to reach.

I could put my foot down — the V6 Accord is faster than anything this side of a Boxster — charging up behind those keeping me from home, safe in the knowledge that they see only its red paint and not my scrawny arms, safely removed from the experience. But something in the back of my mind restrains me. Maybe it's the leaf of the potted plant behind, gently tapping the back of my head, that reminds me that this isolation is only temporary and that soon I'll be back home, once again involved in the world outside.

<![CDATA[ European Honda Accord Sedan And Wagon ]]> European Honda Accord. What do you say? It sure is... Honda-like? Really, it's an appliance of a car, designed neither to be overtly offensive to some nor blandly dull to others. The eye is drawn to the aggressive front fascia, but the conservative profile calms your pulse right back down. This is like the car equivalent of taking uppers, then downers, in an effort to achieve an even effect and feel good later. That's something it does actually really well. The materials on the inside are bumping up to the VW level of interior quality, the seats hit the sweet spot between German firm and US squishy, and the carpet in the trunk is better than the last model. Other than that, we're back our affirmation of this being a new Accord. Press release to the same effect below.

THE ALL-NEW HONDA ACCORD

Aimed squarely at challenging established premium contenders in the D-segment, Honda's all-new Accord saloon and Tourer offer sporty styling, greater refinement and a unique package of safety systems, together with excellent dynamic capabilities and strong environmental credentials in the form of an all Euro 5 emissions compliant engine line-up.

Significantly wider and slightly lower, the styling adopts a more emotional, sporty motif. The 'sharp-edged' design, with pronounced muscular wheelarches that emphasise the car's wider track, gives the Accord a distinctive, strong stance with a solid, planted feel. The distinctive nose and more flowing lines deliver a tauter, more athletic shape.

The evolution from the previous generation Accord is even more pronounced in the case of the Tourer, where a greater emphasis on load carrying practicality has evolved into a more dynamic expression of its advanced technology, while still retaining a strong degree of versatility and practicality.

Three advanced new engines with some of the lowest emissions in their segment
The new range is one of the first to offer a complete engine line-up that will comply with the forthcoming Euro 5 emissions regulations which aren't due to be introduced until September 2009. The exceptional environmental credentials haven't been achieved at the cost of driving enjoyment, however, and greater frugality is matched by greater performance and flexibility.

Making its debut is Honda's second-generation diesel engine which builds on the outstanding qualities of the award-winning i-CTDi unit to raise the bar in the diesel stakes once again. Its advanced technology and overall capabilities place it firmly at the forefront of diesel development and underpins the Accord's claim to offer one of the strongest combinations of dynamic performance and environmental responsibility in the marketplace.

Like its predecessor, the new i-DTEC engine is compact, lightweight, refined and quiet in operation. It employs the latest piezoelectric multi-stage fuel injection technology, more efficient exhaust gas recirculation and a particulate filter for significantly reduced emissions. At the same time both power and torque levels have been increased for a sportier driving experience. Output is 10 PS greater at 150 PS/110 kW at the same 4,000 rpm, while peak torque is now 350 Nm at 2,000 rpm.

The 2.0-litre i-VTEC offers similar levels of performance to its predecessor - 156 PS at 6,300 rpm - but builds on its class leading fuel economy. Key technological changes include increased diameter intake valves, further optimised valve lift and timing and increased inlet and exhaust air flow volumes.

The 2.4-litre engine is more powerful, delivering 200 PS at 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 233 Nm at 4,500 rpm - up from 190 PS and 223 Nm. Behind the figures are a compression ratio increased from 10.5 to 11.0:1, larger diameter valves, revised valve timing, and reduced exhaust system pressures.

6-speed manual/5-speed automatic
All three engines are matched to a 6-speed manual transmission, while both petrol engines have the option of a 5-speed automatic.

Manual models feature a 'Shift Indicator Light' or SIL which appears in the centre of the rev counter. 'UP' or 'DOWN' are displayed to advise the driver of the optimum point (in terms of best fuel economy) at which to change gear; Honda tests have demonstrated fuel savings of as much as 5 per cent simply by following these commands.

The 5-speed automatic transmission now has a straight 'P R N D S' gate: using the steering wheel paddles in S mode provides a sequential shift mode, allowing manual shifting and gear hold.

Agile, secure handling
Enthusiastic drivers will also appreciate the new Accord's greater agility. A lowered centre of gravity, a wider track and the all-new front double wishbone and rear multilink suspension with variable rate dampers, plus greater body rigidity mean that the Accord more readily reacts to driver input. Handling is more responsive and confidence-inspiring and body roll is much reduced.

Speed sensitive electric power steering is standard on all models and the new axial system features a high output, low inertia brushless motor which provides excellent steering feel at higher speeds for a sense of stability and confidence. A quicker steering ratio has also been adopted in keeping with the Accord's more agile chassis characteristics.

A comprehensive safety package
Complementing an armoury of passive safety features is an outstanding array of dynamic systems delivering even greater security. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is standard across the range and is designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during cornering, acceleration and sudden manoeuvres by applying braking to the right or left hand wheels as necessary and modulating the engine torque output as required.

Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
The new Accord also features an innovative system in which the capabilities of both VSA and the car's Electric Power Steering are brought to bear. Called Motion Adaptive EPS, it detects instability in slippery conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction.

The input is barely noticeable and control of the steering remains with the driver at all times. But this supporting steering torque is enough to prompt the driver to act intuitively and the driver's reaction as a result is enough to regain stability or to shorten braking distances, allowing control to be maintained.

Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS) optional across the range
Optionally available on Executive grade on 2.2 i-DTEC and 2.4 i-VTEC is Honda's Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS), a suite of three ground-breaking technologies that raise safety to a new level. The first of these is the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) which uses a camera to detect the car deviating from a traffic lane and provides steering torque when necessary, thereby reducing the burden of motorway driving while at the same time enhancing safety.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses a millimetre-wave radar to maintain a consistent distance to a vehicle directly in front, for more relaxed, less tiring driving.
The third ADAS system is the Collision Mitigation Brake System (CMBS) which monitors the following distance and closing rate between the Accord and the car directly in front of it, warning the driver when a collision is likely and helping reduce impact when a collision becomes unavoidable.

These systems complement the Accord's passive safety features which include front seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, dual stage front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags, full length curtain airbags and ISOFIX fittings and tether anchor points for secure childseat fixture on all models. There are also front seat active headrests which are triggered when the occupant is pushed into the seat in the event of a rear impact, so causing a rigid plate to activate a link to the headrest which pushes it forward to support the head.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure
Progressively introduced throughout the Honda range, the Accord's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure provides significantly enhanced occupant protection in a variety of real-world crash conditions.

A front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to prevent cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways - and away from the passenger compartment. This is particularly important where a frontal collision occurs between vehicles of differing heights, weights or frame construction.

To achieve top level, side impact safety, Honda's engineers have increased the side section of the frame and chosen different material specifications to provide the desired level of stiffness and strength for critical areas, without adding unnecessary weight.

The new Accord also incorporates many of the pedestrian-protection design features already familiar from recent Honda models, including windscreen wiper pivots designed to break away on impact, energy absorbing front wing mounts and bonnet hinges alongside an unobstructed area beneath the bonnet allowing greater space for deformation.

Premium interior with carefully selected materials and outstanding fit and finish
The sporty feel of the cockpit is reflected in a fascia design characterised by a strong feeling of personal space for both the driver and front passenger. Distinctive silver trim sweeps inwards across the fascia from either side before continuing down into the centre console. Stylish and highly supportive front seats have larger bolsters while a new internal structure is designed to reduce any transmission of vibration.

Black with silver trim, the sporty three spoke steering wheel holds a complete suite of controls - including audio, cruise control and mobile telephone control. It is fully adjustable for reach and rake, with an extra 10 degrees of tilt adjustment compared to the previous Accord.

The new Accord features 'floating' backlit instruments and contained within the centre of the speedometer face is an LCD multi-information display showing a variety of information - controls positioned on the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle the display through multiple screens of information.

A new feature is a service reminder that presents the driver with either the distance or days remaining to a required service, with an enlarged warning symbol appearing when the due date is imminent.

Storage space includes two centre console side pockets; a lidded storage area to side of the steering wheel; large front door pockets able to hold bottles and maps; bottle holders in the rear door panels, and a large centre console box. Rather than a fold-down pocket design, the large glovebox now has an independent lid and is subdivided with a tissue box compartment as well as space secured for a manual. The lid of the centre console box doubles up as an armrest and is slide-adjustable by 89 mm. Two cupholders are provided in the centre console, while rear seat passengers have access to a further two contained in the centre armrest, revealed when it is folded down.

Comprehensive equipment availability
The Accord's comprehensive specification includes power windows all round, those in the front with auto up and down and an obstruction detection device; auto lights and wipers on Sport and Executive models; dual-zone automatic climate control and, on higher grade models, rear seat vents with a feed to the centre console storage box to enable drinks to be cooled or warmed.

Entry level Accords are equipped with a radio/single CD player with built-in 30W 4 channel amp and six speakers. Higher grade models have a premium audio system with 6 CD changer unit located in the centre console, a separate high power amp delivering 45W x 8 channels and no fewer than 10 speakers.

Fifth generation and later iPods can now be played via the USB docking point located in the centre console storage box, where an auxiliary jack point and power outlet can also be found.

The advanced satellite navigation system - standard on Executive grade and optional on other models - now boasts an 8-inch screen, RDS, voice recognition in five languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish) and covers most European countries including for the first time Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Load Capacity
At 467 litres (VDA), the saloon's luggage capacity is best in class measured against other premium contenders. The boot loading height is also a convenient 678 mm, down 80 mm. Further practicality is provided by highly visible and easily reached rear seat release catches located just within the upper edge of the boot opening.

Despite its dynamic styling, the Tourer's luggage capacity at 395 litres (VDA), with all seats in place, is one of the best in the sport wagon category. In practical terms, that is sufficient to comfortably accomodate four 46 inch golf bags or four large suitcases. Larger loads can be carried with the rear seats folded, and in this configuration the Tourer is able to transport a mountain bike, without the need to remove the bike's wheels first.

To open up the Tourer's luggage area, the one-motion rear seats can be readily collapsed in a single action to create a virtually flat load space with flush, clean sides.

Set within the rear half of the load area is an underfloor storage space which is a useful 250 mm deep and adds 53 litres to the Accord Tourer's overall load space. On either side are two smaller compartments accessed by means of their own covers.

The highly practical, retractable tonneau cover features a large, easy-to-grip handle, and large guides on either side of the luggage area into which it can be quickly and easily slotted.

Like its predecessor, the new Accord Tourer is available with a power operated tailgate, which can be operated via the key fob or via a switch located in the tailgate's lower edge.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Acura TSX Press Release Accidentally Hits Internet Before New York Auto Show Unveil ]]> The rapscallion readers at VWVortex have let slip all the deets on the Acura's new "hotness" — the 2009 TSX. You've already seen one teaser shot along with a teaser release, but now here's the whole shebang. We'll have to wait for sometime later on (when Wert's able to run the story on his first-drive he just finished up out West) to get the full spiel on the new pre-entry level luxury sports sedan from Honda's luxe badge. The full press release follows the jump.

All-New 2009 TSX to Debut at New York International Auto Show
The second-generation Acura TSX is designed to appeal to young professionals with its keen-edge styling, athletic performance and advanced electronic features

TORRANCE, Calif., U.S.A., February 11, 2008- Designed and engineered to reaffirm its place as a desirable and affordable entry point for entry-premium buyers, the all-new second-generation 2009 TSX is larger, more agile, more performance minded and even "more Acura" than ever before. Carefully crafted to honor the original TSX's vision as a world-class sports sedan, the new TSX has significantly evolved to offer more comfort, convenience, driving performance and safety. It does so with expanded luxury and electronic features, a wider stance for more agile performance, and advanced safety systems.

The 2009 TSX is expected to appeal to current TSX owners, young professionals and other image seekers who will appreciate its innovative styling, technical allure and total performance - while also valuing the outstanding customer treatment that owners have come to enjoy at Acura dealerships. Extremely brand conscious and eclectic in their tastes, buyers will find the TSX as satisfying for driving colleagues to lunch as it is for weekend snowboarding trips or vacation travel.

Powertrain
An all-aluminum DOHC i-VTEC® in-line 4-cylinder engine heralds a pair of firsts for the TSX model, including dual balance shafts and a direct ignition system. Along with improved performance, it is also cleaner as it now meeting the EPA's aggressive Tier 2-Bin 5 and CARB LEV II Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards for the first time in TSX history.

Displacing 2.4-liters and producing 201 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque (with manual transmission), the new in-line 4-cylinder engine produces its useable power across a much wider rpm range, while five percent more torque further strengthens the engine's pulling power at middle rpm levels. This allows the 2009 TSX to be more responsive off the line and out of corners, and stronger in the middle of the rpm range where the engine operates most of the time.

This newfound performance and flexibility is due in part to a higher compression ratio, revised valve timing, and improved intake and exhaust gas flow. Further credit goes to the TSX engine's i-VTEC® "intelligent" valve control system, which provides the power characteristics of a V-6 without sacrificing the light weight or fuel efficiency of an in-line four. Likewise, a new rear-mounted exhaust manifold layout, a close-coupled catalytic converter design, and a Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system substantially reduce emissions levels. Estimated fuel mileage is 21/30/24 mpg* (city/highway/combined, 5 AT) and 20/28/23 mpg* (city/highway/combined, 6 MT).

Two transmissions are available, both as standard equipment - a 6-speed close- ratio manual with new performance-oriented ratios for Second through Sixth gears, and a Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic with a new lock-up torque converter assembly. The manual transmission features a short-throw shifter with a precise, light action that makes it highly rewarding to use, while the Sequential SportShift automatic permits fully automatic operation with intelligent features such as Grade Logic Control and Shift Hold Control, which make driving the TSX on hilly or winding roads more enjoyable. If the driver desires, the automatic transmission can also be operated manually via new steering-wheel mounted F1®-style paddle shifters.

Body and Chassis
The 2009 TSX body structure includes two firsts for the Acura division, including a closed-channel cross-braced roof structure and inside frame rails. Along with a stronger rear bulkhead, the closed-channel cross-braced roof structure yields a more rigid and vibration-resistant structure. The first use of inside frame rails for any Acura model help tailor the aerodynamics underneath the car for improved fuel economy, lower emissions and reduced noise. In addition, new A-, B- and C-pillar separators improve the TSX's quietness over rough roads and at high speed. Slippery aerodynamics also helps fuel economy as well as high-speed stability - all while lowering emissions.

In addition to its 3.0-inch greater width and 2.6-inch wider track, the 2009 TSX has a 1.3-inch longer wheelbase and 2.4 inches more overall length. These dimensions combine to provide greater interior roominess, more agile handling and improved ride quality. Another first for Acura are the TSX's new dual-mode suspension dampers, which provide superior suspension damping characteristics at both lower and higher damper speeds. Using a unique deflector plate stack, the new dampers adjust compression damping characteristics to suit the vehicle speed, cornering forces and road surface. In creating the second-generation TSX body design, Acura designers sought to retain the crisp, dynamic design of the original and enhance it by widening the body overall and adding more muscular and distinctive cues to create a keen-edged sports sedan. Their key design goal was to create an aerodynamic design that evokes both emotion and tension with a decisively sporty flair.

Outward visibility is improved with a slimmer A-pillar design, while an auto up/down front passenger window adds convenience and a reverse-linked passenger-side door mirror tilts down to help improve safety while parallel parking. The new TSX also has a wider trunk opening and a lower trunk lift-over height for more convenient loading.

Exterior/Interior
Functionality and refinement converge with luxury and style in the interior of the 2009 Acura TSX. Featuring a blend of sweeping, contemporary shapes, a high level of standard comfort and convenience features, widespread use of premium materials and an available Technology Package, this 5-passenger sports sedan offers the upscale modern interior that customers have come to expect from Acura.

From the precision-crafted metal door sills to the satin-metal finish accents, from new leather-covered seats to the steering-wheel mounted controls, and from the premium 7-speaker sound system to the dual-zone automatic climate control, the TSX represents a merge of intelligent design and innovation. For example, Bluetooth® connectivity is standard and includes a HandsFreeLink® cellular telephone interface that makes communications easier and safer while en route.

Typical of Acura, the TSX offers an exceptional level of standard equipment. Included are a standard power passenger seat, a new folding key with remote entry, new automatic headlight activation, a premium 7-speaker sound system with CD, AM/FM/XM®, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® , and USB port music interface. A HomeLink® remote control system is also standard.

Adding to the already impressive list of TSX standard equipment is the available Technology Package, which bristles with leading-edge electronics that make driving much more efficient and enjoyable. These include an Acura Navigation System with Voice RecognitionTM, AcuraLink® Real-time traffic, AcuraLink® weather, and the highly useful AcuraLink® Satellite Communication System. The navigation system also features Real-time trafficTM covering 76 major metropolitan markets, and offers Traffic Rerouting with dynamic route guidance to help navigate around slow-downs. For 2009, the TSX receives a dash-mounted electronic compass for added directional information while driving.

Included in the Technology Package is a premium sound system tuned by legendary sound engineer Elliot Scheiner. This 10-speaker Acura/ELSTM Premium Surround Sound System with DVD-Audio includes a new Note function for XM® Radio that makes it easy to identify songs to recall at a later date. With push of a button, the Note function can capture 10 seconds of up to 30 songs, along with noting text indicating song title, artist name, and XM® channel.

Safety
The 2009 Acura TSX leads the way in safety with its new Advanced Compatibility EngineeringTM (ACETM) body structure. Engineered into the TSX model for the first time, ACETM improves the dispersal of frontal crash energy through the use of load-bearing frame structures that better match the TSX with other vehicles of different sizes and with different bumper heights. Simply put, ACETM helps maximize the effectiveness of the TSX's front crumple zones, better dispersing crash forces before they reach the passenger compartment.

A broad range of passive safety features likewise contributes to occupant safety, including six airbags (dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags, new dual-chamber front seat side airbags, and side curtain airbags for outboard seating positions). Three-point seatbelts and head restraints are provided in all seating positions, and front seatbelt load limiters with an integrated automatic tensioning system further protect the TSX driver and front passenger. A new Active Headrest Restrain System is used for the first time on the TSX, while the rear seat features a Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) system that allows for the easy and secure affixing of up to two child seats. Exterior features designed to further improve safety include daytime running lights (DRL), pedestrian-injury mitigation features such as a deformable hood, hood hinges and windshield-wiper pivots, and a 5-mph front bumper and 2.5-mph rear bumper. The 2009 Acura TSX is expected to achieve the highest ratings in both government (NHTSA)** and independent (IIHS) crash testing - including garnering IIHS's TOP SAFETY PICK.

Finally, the 2009 Acura TSX is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/70,000 mile powertrain limited warranty. Additional benefits of ownership include Acura Total Luxury Care® (TLC®) that provides free 24-hour roadside assistance, concierge service and trip routing.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Honda Accord Tourer Spotted, Wanted ]]> We're always interested in seeing what's going on across the pond from Honda, especially because it so often ends up over here as an Acura. We can only hope the 2009 Honda Accord Tourer's one of those lob passes from the Europeans as we've liked the look since we first saw it as the Honda Accord Tourer Concept back in Frankfurt last year. Here's a shot taken from some unknown location by a user at the Temple of VTec forums early today that leaves very little to the imagination and gets our wagon woody wickedly wooden. [via TOV]

<![CDATA[ Tokyo Auto Salon: Honda Inspire Modulo Touring ]]> Honda looked to in-house tuner Modulo to take their Inspire (a.k.a. Accord) and shake off some of the Teutonic flavor. Though the new sedan does borrow heavily from European designs, the Modulo body kit certainly portrays a more typically Japanese sentiment. The new grille and front fenders, in particular, are more Motegi than Nurburgring. In addition to the exterior enhancements, it appears that the interior has been upgraded with two-tone leather and a smattering of techno goodies. The steering wheel alone has nearly a dozen buttons.

As with most Tokyo Auto Salon previews, there's no word yet on what kind of madness is going on under the skin. Just for fun let's say it's some tuned version of the 3.5-liter six. [Honda via World Car Fans, NihonCar]

<![CDATA[ SEMA 2007: Honda Accord Coupe HF-S Concept ]]> Honda just revealed a "world debut" concept car here at SEMA, and it basically represents what you can do with a new 2008 Honda Accord if you really put your mind to it. Also, you've got to use up every option possible in the Honda Factory Performance catalog — from ten years from now. It's called the Honda Accord Coupe HF-S concept, and it's got every piece of Honda kit you'd never want and you couldn't even get — even a "Cadmium Orange Pearl" color coat, which we think may be what happens when you combine an orange and cadmium at a really hot temperature. It's got LED driving lights, a wrap-around front bumper which creates a "vortex effect" to enhance high-speed aero and engine cooling. Full press release after the jump.

Honda Introduces a World-Debut Concept Vehicle Based on the Accord and a Wide Range of Customized Vehicles and Racecars at 2007 SEMA Show

10/30/2007 - LAS VEGAS -

More than 17 Honda project and concept vehicles are on display at the 2007 Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.

Making its world debut, the Honda Accord Coupe HF-S Concept represents a radical vision for customizing the all-new Accord's design and performance through stylish and functional modifications. A dual-port exhaust system can provide additional performance when needed while retaining low noise output during relaxed driving. Purely a concept, the Accord HF-S Concept is a creation of Honda Access America, Inc., the U.S. accessory development division.

The 2008 Accord Coupe equipped with dealer-installed Honda Factory Performance™ (HFP™) components melds a distinctive, custom appearance with an enhanced level of handling performance. All of the HFP components except the suspension kit (available Spring 2008) are currently available as dealer-installed accessories. All HFP products carry the same 3-year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty as the rest of the vehicle, when installed at the time of new vehicle purchase, and are engineered to be fully compatible with the vehicle.

"The Accord HF-S Concept provides a glimpse into the future of vehicle customization," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "The Honda Factory Performance-equipped 2008 Accord Coupe demonstrates the best of what the company offers today."

In addition to the Accords on display, fifteen more unique vehicles filled out the Honda booth, including the all-new S2000 CR and the recently-introduced Civic Mugen Si Sedan. A specially-prepared S2000 CR has been modified by Team Honda Research to compete in the 2007 National Auto Sport Association's (NASA) "25 Hours of Thunderhill" endurance race in December. Another racecar, the "One Lap Odyssey" modified by Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, LLC made its SEMA debut after winning its class in Car and Driver magazine's 2007 Cannonball One Lap of America.

Honda Accord Coupe HF-S Concept
Honda Access America, Inc., Honda's U.S. accessory development team designed and built the HF-S Concept to demonstrate how the customized use of technology could allow vehicle owners to fine-tune performance while adding their own senses of style. Key exterior and conceptual powertrain modifications represent functional performance and driving-experience enhancements.

Unique LED driving lights, placed on the fore-most corners, wrap around the front of the bumper providing increased visibility both forward and side for the driver while also creating a unique appearance. The shape of the front bumper is designed to create a vortex effect to enhance high-speed aerodynamics and engine cooling. On the sides of the vehicle, the shape of the carbon fiber panels decreases negative speed force around the wheel arches. The rear bumper diffuser is designed to reduce drag. The trunk spoiler is a prototype design engineered for high-speed down-force. The metallic color of the exterior is accented by Cadmium Orange Pearl - a color derived from super-heated metal. The use of this color for the brake calipers, badges, grille accent, and interior details underscores the vehicle's high-performance appearance.

Key to the concept is the use of technology to electronically customize throttle response, suspension settings, steering boost, and traction involvement to the driver's taste. Additionally, the exhaust is a two-stage design. It is engineered to be exceptionally quiet during relaxed cruising, and provide elevated levels of performance in high performance driving situations.

Honda Factory Performance (HFP) Accord Coupe
As a dealer-installed accessory, Honda's in-house HFP products carry the same 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty as the rest of the vehicle, when installed at the time of new vehicle purchase, and are engineered to be fully compatible with the vehicle. The Accord HFP package includes a wide range of performance- and style-enhancing products. The Sports Suspension package (available Spring 2008) reduces ride height by about 25 mm, lowering the vehicle's center of gravity, and enhancing the Accord Coupe's sporty road-handling characteristics. Larger wheels and tires include 19-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels designed for high-performance 245/40R-19 tires (sold separately). A full aerodynamic body kit (front, sides and rear) further elevates the style quotient of the entire vehicle. Interior and exterior HFP emblems complement the package. All of the Accord Coupe HFP components except suspension can currently be purchased individually, and the full HFP package including suspension will go on sale in the spring of 2008. American Honda launched its performance accessory program in 2002 with the introduction of a Honda Factory Performance package for the Civic EX Coupe, and currently offers HFP products for the Civic, Accord and Fit.

S2000 CR
Enhancing the S2000's performance potential, the S2000 CR introduces more track-oriented suspension settings, aerodynamic-enhancing bodywork, a removable hardtop, higher rigidity and reduced weight. The added features are designed to appeal to enthusiasts who enjoy open track-day events and also provide a more ideal starting point for racers who modify the S2000 for competition in club-racing events. Taking this concept even further, Team Honda Research, a group formed from Honda R&D Americas, Inc., engineers, added modifications necessary to compete in the 2007 NASA "25 Hours of Thunderhill" endurance race. All of the modifications are consistent with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Touring 3 and the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) Performance Touring regulations.

Honda Manufacturing Alabama, LLC (HMA) One Lap Odyssey
The Car and Driver magazine 2007 Cannonball One Lap of America race included an Alabama-built Odyssey minivan, produced by a team of dedicated associates from Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA) in Lincoln. The One Lap vehicle created by the HMA team was a fully-customized Odyssey minivan-turned-racer that sported a modified engine with a custom-built turbo charger, a six-speed manual transmission, a track-tuned suspension, competition roll cage and close to 400 horsepower at the wheels.

From May 5-12, the team raced from track to track over a 4,000-mile loop around the Midwest and western United States. The HMA Odyssey raced to an impressive first- place finish in the SUV category and 33rd overall in a field of 88 competitors. Along the way, the HMA team picked up a first-place finish - among all competitors - at the race segment held at the Mid-America Motorsports Park. This win came against the entire field, which included Corvettes, Vipers, Porsches and a Ford GT.

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Honda Accord Tourer Concept ]]> Honda informs us the company will maintain a clear focus on innovation, environmental responsibility, safety, and building machines that are fun to drive. Along with the hydrogen fuel cell FCX, the company plans to push ahead with an i-dtec turbodiesel. The engine requires no urea system to meet emissions standards thanks to superior catalytic converter design. A European version of Accord in will pack the new diesel in 2008, with Japan and the US models being considered for the near future. Honda President and CEO Takeo Fukui then introduced the Accord Tourer Concept, told us the sedan version is coming to Geneva in 2008, and to have a good time at the show. Asimo was taking a break.

<![CDATA[ Honda To Reveal Accord Tourer Concept At Frankfurt Auto Show And No, This Isn't It ]]> In addition to the ASIMO humanoid robot, Honda solar panels and HondaJet on the Honda stand at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month, the folks from Honda UK tell us they'll be debuting what they're calling "an exciting Accord Tourer Concept." Set on a stand that supposedly will focus on the twin Honda Euro themes of "Sports" and "Environment," the Honda folks claim the concept sled will give a "strong indication of the design direction of the next gen Accord Tourer" set to debut sometime during the middle of next year. As of now the only info we've got is in the press release below the jump. The teaser sketch above? That's the very bubbly and blue two-door "Small Hybrid Sports Concept" first revealed at the Geneva Show earlier this year and which will share stage space with the new Accord Tourer Concept.

August 28, 2007- Honda will be presenting the world debut of an exciting Accord Tourer Concept at the forthcoming 2007 Frankfurt motor show. A press conference will be held on the Honda stand in Hall 5 on the first Press Day, 11th September, between 13.15 and 13.45.

The Accord Tourer Concept will give a strong indication of the design direction of the all-new generation Accord Tourer set to debut in mid-2008 and its wider, lower look signals a more sporty, more emotional styling approach. This will be matched by a range of advanced, low emissions engines and innovative new chassis technology that will deliver exceptional handling without compromising ride comfort.

As well as an extensive selection of models from the passenger car range, the Honda stand will also feature a comprehensive line-up of motorcycles and power equipment products. The stand will focus around the twin themes of "Sports" and "Environment".

The "Environment" area will centre upon Honda's ground-breaking environmental technologies, such as petrol-electrical vehicles. This includes the Small Hybrid Sports Concept first revealed at the Geneva Show which demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced hybrid technology and fun-to-drive sports car characteristics. Alongside it will be Honda's next-generation clean diesel engine, the production Civic Hybrid and the FCX Concept with its fully-functioning fuel cell technology which made its European driving debut at the Gotland Ring in Sweden earlier this year.

The "Sports" area of the stand will include Honda's current F1 racing car, the RA107 piloted by Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, alongside Civic Type R and Honda S2000 production models, There will also be a strong emphasis on the company's motorsport heritage and alongside the latest F1 car will be one of Honda's first, the 1967 RA300.

To emphasise the major contribution made by motorcycles towards Honda's sporting prowess and reputation there will be displayed examples of both the Repsol Honda RC212V from this year's MotoGP series - raced by Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden - and one of the HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades which contested this year's Isle of Man TT races and allowed John McGuinness to capture the first 130mph lap of the circuit and victory in the Senior TT Race.

The line-up of production motorcycles includes the world's first production motorcycle airbag system, available on the new Gold Wing, which can help lessen the severity of injuries caused by frontal collisions.

Stand visitors will also be welcomed by several displays of Honda's unique innovation, which include the ASIMO humanoid robot, Honda solar panels and HondaJet.

<![CDATA[ 2008 Honda Accord Sedan - In Detail ]]> Late last night, the embargo doors on the 2008 Honda Accord were blown open and we gave you a first-look and first-dump of all the pictures and press info we had of the new-for-2008 model of the Accord. Now it's time to dig a bit deeper and take a look at both the sedan and the coupe in a bit more detail — and we're starting with the four-door. The Honda Accord sedan's become all grown-up over the years — but we don't mean in terms of build quality and dependability. The Accord long ago moved up from plucky little upstart to the benchmark by which other automakers measure their own mid-sized sedans. No, we actually mean that no longer will other automakers be able to use them as the mid-size benchmark — because the Accord four-door's no longer a mid-size. Yup, that's correct, the Accord's now moving from the EPA's "mid-size" category into the EPA's "large sedan" classification. But that's not the only place the Accord's movin' on up.

It's also moving on up in engine size — the new V6 gets a half liter more, moving up to a 3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine with 273 HP at 6,200 rpm and 250 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm with a 5-speed slushbox. The new engine also introduces Honda's next-gen Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology to give the new Accord four-door a purported EPA City/Highway fuel economy of 19/29 mpg. We'll hopefully get a chance to see if those numbers actually match up on the V6.

The in-line four-cylinder comes in two flavors for the sedan — a standard 200-horsepower 2.4-liter engine is standard in the Accord Sedan EX, EX-L with a purported 21/31 mpg and a 180-hp version of the same capacity engine in the LX and LX-P with a purported 21/31 with the auto tranny and 22/31 with the manny tranny.

On the safety front the Accord's got kind of a cool marketing feature — there are no optional accessories. Everything from side-curtain airbags to 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and tire pressure monitoring system are all included. Not too shabby of an idea if you ask us.

As far as the trim — there's a few different "levels" to choose from with an interior benefiting from a redesign of the center console stack and the addition of a nav wheel that's being described as "nothing like the iDrive":

• LX and LX Premium (LX-P) trim levels are powered by a 2.4-liter, 180-hp four-cylinder i-VTEC engine with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.
• EX and EX-L trim levels are powered by a 2.4-liter, 200-hp 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic.
• The EX V-6 is powered by a 3.5-liter, SOHC, i-VTEC® V-6 engine with VCM and a 5-speed automatic transmission.
• The EX-L and EX V-6 are available with a Navigation system.

<![CDATA[ 2008 Honda Accord Revealed! ]]> Thanks to the folks at Edmunds for some slick embargo breakage earlier, we've now got the Inside Line on the 2008 Honda Accord in the coupe and sedan variants — with both the 4-cylinder and V6 engines under the newly sculpted bonnet. Here's the photos we've got — and the data and specs on all variations of the next Honda Accord are below the jump. We'll have specific information up and more photos on each variant tomorrow — but for tonight, here's what we've got — just as we've got it.

UPDATE: We've now got a post up for the 2008 Honda Accord Sedan filled with all of the PR photos and details in an easy to read format.

2008 Accord at a Glance • Available as a Sedan (moves from the EPA Midsize just into the EPA Large classification) or Coupe (Compact). • Styling embodies a bold, upscale, sophisticated and prestigious design direction. • Available 3.5-liter i-VTEC V-6 engine with 273 horsepower and 5-speed automatic transmission introduces Honda's next-generation Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology for EPA City/Highway fuel economy of 19/29 mpg1 (Sedan). • Accord Coupe V-6 with 6-speed manual transmission uses a unique variant of the 3.5-liter V-6 that also produces 273 peak horsepower, but features VTEC for enhanced low- and mid-rpm torque. EPA City/Highway fuel economy is 16/25 mpg1. • 2.4-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine is available with 200 horsepower (Coupe LX-S and all EX and EX-L models) or 180 horsepower (Sedan LX and LX-P) and EPA City/Highway fuel economy of 21/31 mpg2 (Sedan). • Available transmissions are 5-speed manual (4-cylinder only) or 5-speed automatic (all) and 6-speed manual (V-6 Coupe only). • Standard safety equipment includes Honda's exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), side-curtain airbags, new dual-chamber front side airbags, active front head restraints and pedestrian safety features. • All models and trim levels except the four-cylinder with 5-speed manual transmission and Coupe V-6 with 6-speed manual transmission meet stringent PZEV emissions regulations in regions that adhere to California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards. • Premium features (navigation, interface dial, Bluetooth, information display) and overall refinement (solid driving feel) on par with vehicles one and even two classes above the Accord's segment. • Overall packaging improvements result in a 0.7-inch lower center of gravity. The 2008 Accord comes to market as the most powerful Honda model ever. It has also grown larger to meet the needs of an audience that values hospitality with "equal" front and rear seating comfort for four adults - while also maintaining or improving its fuel economy, lowering its emissions and building on its reputation as a class leader. From a pure performance standpoint, the Accord's 273-horsepower V-6 engine provides acceleration on par with luxury vehicles from classes outside of the segment.

Dynamically, the Accord engages the driver with a refined and rewarding performance feel, yet ride comfort remains equally impressive for passengers. Furthermore, the level of standard equipment and premium features allow customers to create an environment that matches 21st century expectations. Ultimately, the 2008 Accord adds more emotion and style to the model's smart-to-own foundation in an all-out effort to genuinely deliver on the promise of an "evolution of the best" with one of North America's favorite cars.

The Accord DNA
The Accord has always occupied an extremely important position within Honda and within the automotive marketplace. It is more than just the company's flagship passenger car from engineering and sales standpoints. Reliable, safety-oriented and efficient, the Accord is also the most comprehensive expression of Honda's DNA worldwide. More than anything else, the Honda Accord stands for:
• Fun-to-Drive - The 2008 Accord model range introduces Honda's most powerful passenger-car engine in North America, and its double-wishbone front suspension provides a solid feel unlike anything in its class.
• Durability, quality and reliability (DQR) -Year in and year out, the Accord is consistently a high scorer in initial and long-term quality studies.
• Safety - With Honda's Safety for Everyone initiative, every trim level of the 2008 Accord contains an extensive range of safety technologies, from its Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure to its airbag systems and active front seat head restraints.
• Value -Strong Honda resale value and low maintenance costs help make the Accord historically smart-to-own in the long run as referenced by leading industry resources.

• Versatility - With a new interior that is 3.3 cu-ft. larger than before, the Accord Sedan offers more roominess and comfort than ever. The Accord Sedan's expansive interior volume of 120.0 cu-ft. moves it just into the EPA Large Sedan category for 2008.
• Environmental - Honda has the highest Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) ratings in America . The 2008 Accord, with two new 4-cylinder engines and two new V-6 versions, is more fuel-efficient . In addition, the Accord meets stringent PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) standards in states using that standard.

2008 Accord Advancements
As Honda's highest-volume seller in the U.S., by necessity Accord strives to deliver exceptional feature content including outstanding driving qualities, a high level of interior comfort and convenience features, consummate DQR, and the benefits of Honda's Safety for Everyone initiative. By design, the Accord Coupe is free to connect with a select range of customers that place a high value on sporty style and driving excitement. Stylistically as well as dynamically, the Accord Coupe distances itself from the Accord Sedan to satisfy more enthusiastic drivers with a unique set of attributes all its own.

Durability, Quality and Reliability
For many customers the Durability, Quality and Reliability (DQR) of the Honda Accord is what keeps them returning generation after generation. These fine qualities - and the resale or trade-in value they engender for the Accord - become a powerful purchase incentive. Virtually every major company that studies vehicle residual value have shown that the Accord typically has one of the highest residual values in the industry. As an end result, a high residual or resale value makes the true cost of ownership less than many lower-priced competitors.

Market Position
The Accord has consistently been one of the top five best-selling vehicles in the U.S. for nearly two decades. As Honda's best-selling vehicle in U.S., Accord is the bedrock of the company. The sedan market in the U.S. is consistently strong, with annual sales in the neighborhood of 2,000,000 units, with Accord accounting for nearly one-fifth of all Midsize vehicles sold. Accord appeals directly to two of the growing segments in the automotive market - young couples and empty nesters. As these people seek sophistication and fun combined with great resale value and quality in their vehicles, Accord meets their needs and desires. At the same time it appeals to the more practical virtues of a great family vehicle.

In contrast, the Accord Coupe has historically appealed to singles, young couples without children and "empty nesters" that want to capture the spirit of driving that a coupe provides. Today's sports-coupe buyers want even more emphasis on sportiness and that is the reason why the 2008 Accord Coupe so visibly stands apart from the sedan - both visually and in handling performance.

Primary Competitive Set
Though the Accord Sedan has just over 120 cu-ft. total interior volume and is classified as a Large sedan by the EPA, its prime competition remains in the upper end of the EPA Midsize class.

The Midsize sedan segment is one of the most competitive in the entire automotive field with more than 20 unique model lines from manufacturers large and small all vying for customers' attention. With top-selling products achieving sales figures in the neighborhood of 400,000 units per year, broad appeal is essential to success. Likewise, design, engineering and quality must reach the highest standards. As with products across the auto industry, buyer expectations for Midsize sedans are evolving to favor products with more interior room and personality.
The primary competitors to the 2008 Honda Accord are the Toyota Camry and the Nissan Altima. The Accord Sedan is well positioned to compete with these vehicles with its expansive interior, more daring styling, excellent driving character, overall quality and high levels of safety. Beyond its direct competitors, the Accord Sedan also competes with a secondary set that includes the Nissan Maxima and Toyota Avalon. The primary competitor for the Accord Coupe is the Nissan Altima Coupe and Toyota Solara.

Exterior
The Accord Sedan embraces a traditional three-box shape that emphasizes both a dynamic and athletic feel with the sophistication of a timeless sedan form. The design is intended to convey a prestigious presence toward family, friends and business associates in much the same way a good suit can be worn on totally different occasions with a consistent feeling of style and class.

The focal point for creating the exterior began with the belief that a sedan should reflect both American values and embrace values shared worldwide. Truly a global effort, the Accord design theme of "athletic dynamism" brings together contributions from Honda design centers in Italy, Germany, Japan and the United States.

Dimensionally, the Accord Sedan's overall length of 194.1 inches (4-cylinder models) is 3.0 inches longer than the 2007 model, the width of 72.7 inches is 1.1 inches wider, and the height of 58.1 inches is 0.9 inches taller. Even though the size is larger in every dimension, the vehicle's torsional rigidity has increased by 20% as a result of advanced body construction that uses 48% high-tensile steel - the most high-tensile steel by volume of any Accord to date. A significant benefit to the advanced body construction is that total vehicle weight increased only by approximately 5% despite the larger size, greater rigidity and added features.

The Accord Coupe styling radically breaks from the sedan with a uniquely aggressive image. Its long hood, sleek roofline and muscular lines suggest an even more powerful presence and a heightened agility compared to the sedan. Dimensionally, the Accord Coupe's overall length of 190.7 inches is 2.9 inches longer than 2007 model, its width of 72.7 inches is 1.4 inches wider, and its height of 55.7 inches is 0.7 inches higher. Compared to the 2008 Accord Sedan, the Accord Coupe is 3.4 inches shorter in length and 1.7 inches shorter in height. Both 2008 vehicles are the same width.
An overview of the top Accord body highlights includes:
• Expressive styling - The 2008 Accord Sedan becomes more upscale and prestigious with a more substantial front end with distinctive 6-point grille, taller and longer hood line, more aggressive flared fenders, unique upper and lower style lines along the body side, and a dynamic roofline.
• Sporty and exciting - Accord Coupe dramatically breaks from the Accord Sedan with unique body panels, glass and lighting that creates a rakish, aggressive appearance from its recessed grille and muscular wheel flares to the 18-inch wheels and projector-beam halogen headlights of the Coupe V-6.
• Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) - The ACE™ body structure is the latest Honda unit-body construction design that optimizes the structure's ability to disperse crash energy in a frontal collision. The 2008 Accord Sedan and Coupe are projected to rate 5 Stars from NHTSA for frontal crash tests and a "Good" rating in IIHS frontal crash tests.
• New frame rail system - Positioning the frame rails inside the Accord's body structure floor (instead of underneath it) creates a nearly flat bottom under the car, providing greater aerodynamic efficiency and reduced under-floor turbulence.
• Increased rigidity - New design techniques and widespread use of high-tensile steel make the 2008 model the most rigid Accord ever, yielding benefits in ride, handling and an overall reduction in noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).
• More slender A-pillars - Provide a greater field of view without compromising strength.

Additional innovative 2008 Accord technologies include:
• Repositioned fuel tank sits lower and farther forward than before for better weight distribution and a lower center of gravity.
• Fuel tank size increased nearly 8% (18.5 gal. vs. 17.2 gal.).
• Flat-blade windshield wipers provide modern and upscale look.

Interior
Premium quality with a simple, modern and spacious design describes the philosophy behind the Accord's interior. Rather than adding feature after feature to assault the senses with opulence, a variety of design techniques were used to enhance the feeling of width and space to express premium quality. Considerable attention was paid to interior shaping and detailing just as it was for the exterior, where the traditional three-box sedan form was enhanced by sculpting of the body panels. The exterior concept of using a beveled corner where the front bumper and fender meet is similarly applied to the lower part of the instrument panel to create a spacious feeling while entering the vehicle. Careful attention was paid to the symmetry of the exterior and interior of the vehicle - including sight lines related the dashboard height and the visual presence of the hood to the driver.

While the interior is larger than the previous-generation Accord, the fundamental reason for increasing its size is grounded in the goal of producing equal seating comfort for front and rear passengers. In other words, the vehicle provides a sense of true hospitality to all of its occupants. Real differences in usable space can be noticed in the hip-point distance between front and rear passengers (+ 1.0 inch compared to the 2007 model).
Furthermore, the increased hip-point distance and lower floor allows rear occupant knee space to increase by three inches compared to 2007. By Honda's in-house measurements, the few sedans on the market with more rear knee space include the Mercedes Benz S550, BMW 750i and Lexus LS 460.

The wider interior (+1.5 inches), combined with a more compact lumbar support system (EX and above), allows the front seats to be positioned farther apart to allow for a 2.75 inch wider center console compared to the 2007 Accord. Not only does a wider console provide the obvious enhanced functionality, but it also conveys a sense of openness more commonly found on high-end luxury vehicles.

A traditional zone approach separates operation-related instruments (top) and information-related instruments (lower). At night, the controls are further separated by color to distinguish between climate controls (aqua green) and audio controls (white). Classically-styled gauges for the speedometer and tachometer are round (instead of being truncated at the bottom). The steering wheel was meticulously fashioned with a shape, size and mass consistent with the finest luxury automobiles.

Overall, the 2008 Accord Sedan has gained 3.3 cubic feet of interior space (120.0 cu-ft. total). Sedan customers traditionally value the comfort and utility of greater interior space, and as a result, the new Accord looks, feels, and simply is bigger. The Accord offers more interior space than its prime competitors in most dimensions. Building on Honda's already excellent reputation for interior styling (one of the significant strengths of the previous generation Accord), the new Accord has an even more upscale presence.

Key interior features and benefits include:
• Large, comfortable size - Roomier than any previous Accord, for both front and rear passengers the Accord feels like it's a class above with a 120-cubic-foot EPA Large size interior (combined interior and trunk).
• Sophisticated styling - Every Accord trim level has a dynamic and upscale presence, starting with a navigation system-style display screen on all vehicles - even those without navigation. The interior exudes high quality and refinement, right down to the tactile feel of interior paneling and available soft leather.
• Advanced safety - The 2008 Accord and Accord Coupe feature a comprehensive array of passive safety features including six air bags, 3-point seat belts with front pretensioners and load limiters, and front Active Front Seat Head Restraints. (Please refer to the Safety tab for more information.)
• Innovative technology - The 2008 Accord features aspirational technology in impressive levels. The new-generation voice-activated Navigation System includes the Zagat Survey™ guide for restaurants, nightlife, hotels and attractions, an 8-inch screen and an interface dial. The vehicle also includes the first use of Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® in a Honda product.

Chassis
Accord has always been considered a sporty performer among mainstream sedans and coupes, and for 2008 the Sedan and Coupe chassis were both developed to increase both driving enjoyment and passenger comfort. A performance-inspired double-wishbone front suspension and an in-wheel double-wishbone multi-link rear suspension are designed to provide world-class chassis dynamics. The Accord Sedan wheelbase of 110.2 inches is 2.4 inches longer than the 2007 model, while the 62.2-inch front/rear track is 1.1 and 1.0 inches wider, respectively. The Accord Coupe wheelbase of 107.9 inches is 2.3 inches longer than the 2007 model (track is identical to sedan). The longer wheelbases contribute to improved ride characteristics. Ultimately, the premium suspension design and wider track (along with wider tire sizes, standard ABS and standard Vehicle Stability Assist) are intended to enhance driver confidence and handling performance in all situations.

Accord History
Honda Accord was first Japanese-nameplate car assembled in the United States and calendar year 2007 represents the 25th anniversary of its manufacture here. The first Japanese-built Accord was introduced as a 1976 model, and by 1982 it was being manufactured both in Japan and in a brand-new automobile assembly plant in Marysville, Ohio. The success of the Accord set a path for Honda, and conclusively proved that manufacturing cars in America was a viable proposition. Seven more Accord generations followed, leading to the eighth-generation 2008 Accord.

Honda Accord generations:
1st generation - 1976 to 1981
2nd generation - 1982 to 1985
3rd generation - 1986 to 1989
4th generation - 1990 to 1993
5th generation - 1994 to 1997
6th generation - 1998 to 2002
7th generation - 2003 to 2007
8th generation - 2008

Manufacturing
Reflecting a long-standing business strategy to build products close to its customers, nearly 80 percent of Honda and Acura automobiles sold in America in 2006 were produced in North America.

Around 80% of the Accords sold in the United States are produced* at Honda of America Manufacturing Inc.'s Marysville Auto Plant in Marysville, Ohio. The Marysville plant is the sole global source of the Accord Coupe.

Honda has been continuously manufacturing automobiles in the U.S. longer than any other international auto manufacturer*, beginning on Nov. 1, 1982. Over the years, Honda built a North American vehicle operation encompassing manufacturing, research, development and engineering - all bolstered by a large U.S. supplier base.

From small beginnings, Honda has grown to produce more than 17 million Honda and Acura cars and light trucks in North America. The year 2007 marks Honda's 25th anniversary for North American auto production and for auto production at the Marysville Auto Plant - further highlighted by production of the 2008 Accord.

Honda began operations at its first North American manufacturing facility in 1979 - the Marysville Motorcycle Plant. American Honda Motor Co. Inc. was the first Japanese automaker to export its U.S.-built cars to overseas markets (1987).

*Using both domestic and globally-sourced parts and materials
