<![CDATA[Audi To Release Mysterious New Model For 100th Anniversary]]> Audi's getting ready to celebrate its 100th anniversary in July and according to their presser, they'll be unveiling a new model. However, they're not saying what it'll be. Could it be the Audi R8 Spyder?

It could be, but according to their product lineup that was leaked months back, they're also scheduling to release the Spanish-built 2011 Audi Q3 light crossover based on the Audi Cross Coupe concept that made its debut in 2007 at the Shanghai Auto Show. So which will it be? A slick droptop version of our beloved Audi R8 or yet another crossover in an already diluted SUV/crossover/softroad coupe market?

It could also be a car that's getting ready to make its world debut, the Audi Sportback Concept-based Audi A7, though as far as we know, that's scheduled to occur in June. There's also the Audi RS5 that's been seen making the rounds on the Nurburgring. There are too many choices so, we'll just have to wait and see what's really in store for us come July 16th.

The opening ceremony for the 100th anniversary celebration will open with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel in Ingolstadt on July 16th, followed by a concert on the 17th by German pop band, Die Fantastischen Vier, and a racing demo on the 18th at the Donau Ring in Ingolstadt featuring historical Audi race cars along with their DTM (German Touring Car Championship), STW (Super Touring Car Championship), R8 and R10 TDI racers. The Audi R15 TDI will also make a public road debut on that same day.

Audi Press Release

Audi marks the 100th birthday of the brand with a multi-day celebration and spectacular attractions

* Opening ceremony with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Ingolstadt on July 16, 2009
* Top-tier pop concert in the Audi Piazza
* Historic Donau Ring for motorsports fans
* Grand finale with classical concert and fireworks in Klenze Park

The brand with the four rings will kick off the celebrations marking its 100th birthday with a grand opening ceremony at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt on July 16. The ceremony, which will be attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, will launch a four-day series of events.

The premium manufacturer with the slogan "Vorsprung durch Technik" will mark its centennial by once again offering a compelling demonstration of its core competencies - attractive design and innovative technology. A world premiere awaits the guests in Ingolstadt on July 16: Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the AUDI AG Board of Management, will unveil a new Audi model in front of around 2,500 invited guests. "We are proud of the tradition of the Audi brand and our company's history of success. You have to be aware of your roots if you want to shape the future with new ideas and innovations," says Stadler.

The ceremony will open with a performance by star pianist Lang Lang. The Chinese virtuoso has served as a global brand ambassador for Audi since 2006. Another highlight: Munich-based musician and producer Leslie Mandoki has composed a commissioned work for Audi to mark its 100th birthday. Under the baton of Paul Momberger, the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt will debut the classical work before the invited guests on July 16.

The internationally renowned Swiss lighting artist Gerry Hofstetter will provide the visual accompaniment to the opening ceremony: an exciting lighting installation highlighting the architecture at the Audi Forum Ingolstadt. Hofstetter has enchanted people the world over with his lighting art, and has previously illuminated a number of famous buildings including the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Pyramids of Giza.

A top-tier pop concert is scheduled for July 17. "Die Fantastischen Vier", one of the most popular bands from the German-speaking countries, will be playing live and unplugged, accompanied by an international 60-piece symphony orchestra. The band's MTV Unplugged concert in 1998 was a musical milestone for the four rap artists from Stuttgart, and the live show on July 17 is set to be another dazzling highlight in the group's history. At the "Audi rocks 100″ concert, they will celebrate 100 years of the Ingolstadt premium brand with a large-scale open-air performance in the Audi Piazza.

Advance ticket sales open at the time of the official press conference at 2 p.m. on April 23, 2009. Tickets can be obtained from www.eventim.de or by calling the hotline on +49 (0)1805 570070 (€0.14/min from German landlines; prices from mobile phones may differ). On the same day, the organizing agency GA Events will be available to assist with queries from the press regarding the artists performing during the pop concert and accreditation matters. Contact information can be found at www.ga-events.com.

Motorsports fans especially should mark July 18 on their calendars: that Saturday, Audi Tradition will celebrate the centennial at the historic Donau Ring in Ingolstadt's old city. Nearly every race car in the history of the brand will hit the road for demo runs. In addition to DTM (German Touring Car Championship) and STW (Super Touring Car) racers, the victorious Le Mans sports cars - the Audi R8 and the R10 TDI - will also put in some laps. The Audi R15 TDI racing prototype - the latest development from Audi Sport - will make its public road debut on the Donau Ring in Ingolstadt.

Outstanding drivers from Audi's history are expected, with the attendance of two-time world rally champion Walter Röhrl, DTM champion Hans-Joachim Stuck and European rally champion Harald Demuth already confirmed. Just one week later, on July 25, Audi Tradition will also hold an historic car event in Zwickau, the birthplace of the brand.

Four historic race cars will put in some laps around the Platz der Völkerfreundschaft. "I am pleased that AUDI AG will once again honor its place of birth in Audi's centennial year," says Dr. Pia Findeiß, Mayor of the City of Zwickau.

Audi is inviting its employees and the people of the Ingolstadt region to a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Ingolstadt's Klenze Park on Sunday, July 19, the last of the four days of celebrations. The free open-air concert will feature the Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Brno under the direction of Peter Altrichter. The grand finale of the centennial celebration will be a spectacular fireworks display following the concert. Ingolstadt Mayor Dr. Alfred Lehmann is already looking forward to the event and praised the excellent cooperation shown during its preparation. "Organizing cultural events is a largely a community responsibility, but we couldn't do it without partners. AUDI AG has proven exemplary with its dedication to this partnership over the last few years."

The sporting highlight of the centennial celebration is the Audi Cup in Munich's Allianz Arena. AUDI AG has invited FC Bayern München, AC Milan, Manchester United and Club Atlético Boca Juniors to play in the Audi Cup, a two-day soccer tournament on July 29 and 30. Tickets for the Audi Cup start at 12 euros, with the best seats going for 60 euros. The tickets are valid for one entire game day, i.e. for two games. The tournament will open with Boca Juniors facing Manchester United and FC Bayern München taking on AC Milan. On Thursday, the losers of the first two games will play for third place before the winners compete for the title in the final.

"AUDI AG has a long and successful tradition of supporting soccer. Together with many fans, we are looking forward to an exciting tournament featuring great names playing the game at the highest level," says Peter Schwarzenbauer, Member of the AUDI AG Board of Management responsible for Marketing and Sales. Additional information about the Audi Cup is available at http://www.audicup.com.

<![CDATA[Audi A7 Concept To See Detroit Auto Show Reveal]]> The Freep reported this week we'll see the sheet drop on the Audi A7 concept at next month's Detroit Auto Show. Glad to see a non-US automaker plans to reveal something.

The long-rumored Audi A7 is expected to be a coupe-shaped four-door sedan, in the same vein as the Mercedes CLS. We expected it to be coming shortly and now it looks as though we'll be seeing a "concept" this next month at the Detroit Auto Show. Expect the concept to look pretty much exactly how the "production" version will look — except with more LED lights, techie-cool door handles and bigger tires.

<![CDATA[Audi Drops Sketches Of A5 Cabrio, Sportback, A7 And Next-Gen A8]]> Eschewing trite teaser images, Audi has instead given us some actual eye candy, providing official design sketches of four upcoming models: the A5 Cabrio and Sportback, the all-new 2010 A7 four-door coupe and the 2011 A8 sedan. While the A5 Cabrio looks pretty much like a topless A5 coupe, the A5 Sportback is unique for not looking at all like a traditional sportback model, instead bearing resemblance to notchbacks of yore. The A7 brings TT-esque styling to the burgeoning four-door coupe market, while the revised A8, at least in sketch form, looks just about tough as hell. Take a look for yourself in the gallery below.

<![CDATA[2010 Audi A7 Caught Testing, Crashing Near The Nürburgring]]> This Audi A7 mule was spied in Germany, but not ripping up the Nürburgring like you would expect. Rather, it was too busy bouncing off guardrails on a small country road located just off the racing circuit. It appears that the accident didn't involve any other vehicles (or any biodiesel), and the driver is said to be fine, but we can't be sure as to whether or not it was caused by a faulty component on the car or old-fashioned driver error. What is clear are the skid marks drawing a line straight into the left side guardrail— and then across the the road to the other guardrail. Looks like he must have been going pretty fast around that slippery sweeping turn. Oh well, at least Audi sent a trailer to drag it back home.

The long-rumored Audi A7 is expected to be a coupe-shaped sedan, in the same vein as the Mercedes CLS. Though obviously this particular mule is based on an old tarted-up A6. We'd think that would mean mere body damage like this wouldn't be a big deal, so we're assuming more was broken here than the exterior skin.

<![CDATA[2009 Audi A7 Debuts Hilarious New Concept In Camouflage]]> Looking like your Great Aunt Edna in a flowing muumuu, the 2009 Audi A7 camouflaging strategy has taken a turn for the hilarious. Instead of the traditional "tape and blocks," or "crazy looking vinyl decals," Audi has decided on "giant brown tarp with holes cut in it" as the easiest way to keep prying eyes off its new coupe/saloon. It may be good camo, but we can still glean a couple of details.

This is the first time we've gotten a look at any of the production sheet metal, albeit just tiny sliver at the B-pillar. Based on the brilliance of the camo, the only thing we can say is the car has five spoke wheels (for now), a dual exhaust, and is not slab sided. Those clever Germans. [Autobild]

<![CDATA[Audi Engine Strategy Through 2011 Leaked]]> Someone in the know over at Audiblog.nl has spilled forth a detailed list of all Audi brand engines for all models through the 2011 calender year — and the release dates for new models. In addition to the big engine news, the leakers claim that we'll be seeing the rumored Audi A7 model in June of 2010, as well as an S7 version following that fall, and a return to form for the next generation Audi S4. Look below for a detail look at what's coming up for Audi in the next three years.

Audi A1
Starting at the bottom of the grid, the Audi A1 will maintain the currently planned 1.4 TFSI, but will get an 86 HP 1.2-liter TFSI good for a little less power but will be quite a bit easier on European wallets.

Audi S4
Audi-S4-Badge.jpgIt seems the B8 Audi S4 will be returning to its twin-turbo V6 roots, as early as this coming November. News of this respite from V8 shenanigans comes with virtually all positive notes, considering the engine is to displace 3.0 L but grunt out 330 HP, only 10 shy of the current iteration. Add in lighter weight and the same treatment for the Avant versions and everyone's happy.

Audi S5
In September 2010 the S5 will be dumping its current V8 mill for the same twin-turbo 3.0 L TFSI V6 in the S4. This will be a cut in power, but like we said about the S4, it's not giving up much and will lighten up that porky bottom line. What's perhaps more interesting is the introduction of an Audi RS5. It will retain the same 4.2-liter V8 in the current S5, but gets a whopping increase in power up to 450 HP. With such power on tap it's a good thing there will be a new 7-speed to keep it in check.

Audi S5 Sportback
A5_badge.jpgThe previously unknown S5 Sportback will be on sale as of September 2010 and will get the 3.0 L twin-turbo TFSI mated to a 6-speed manual, or a 7 speed auto. We're beginning to see a theme here with S-line engines, aren't you? Hopefully this new engine won't have many teething problems.

Audi A7 Sportback
Being called the Audi A7 "Sportback" leads us to believe this as-yet unseen and unheard of version of the A7 will have a certain wagony-goodness to it, but who knows. Perhaps it'll be a big old five door, swiping the hardware from the Skoda Superb. Anyway, we digress. The A7 Sportback gets a 2.8L FSI, a 3.0 L TFSI, and a bevy of oil burners. And now what's this? An S7 Sportback? Why yes, yes it is. And this one gets a 4.0 L TFSI with 395 HP! While that's no RS6 Avant, it's nothing to sneeze at.

Audi R8 Spyder
R8_Badge.jpgWhen we got the first images of that Audi R8 V10, we couldn't even speculate on a release date for the thing. Now we know the plan is for the hardtop version of the upgraded V10-powered R8 to roll out in June of 2009, and those wacky Germans are going to hack the top off and give you the R8 Spyder in March, 2010. The lesser 4.2 L V8 will follow a little later for the Spyder, just in case you were interested.

Audi Q7
While there's no earth shattering engine news on the Audi Q7 front, these docs report a facelift for the bulky-UV coming in August of next year. So, you know, if the looks are what keep you from taking the plunge, maybe wait a year and see if you like the changes.

There's an exhaustive breakdown of models, engines, and dates over at Audiblog, the original leakers. Good stuff fellas, now all the surprises are gone, thanks a lot (no, really). [via WCF]

<![CDATA[2009 Audi A7 Breaks Its Elusive Cover]]> Looks like the Audi A5 isn't the only one stirring things up lately. WorldCarFans has posted spy photos they claim to be the long (looooong) rumored Audi A7. Their spy shots look like a test mule wearing an A6 suit that's a little bit too small but we still like what we see. The track is stretched a bit as is the wheelbase, the interior is very reminiscent of the A8 but sports a revised dash and *gasp*, a cloth interior. That probably won't be making it into US production models (whenever that happens).

We're also wondering what's hiding under the soft drink cozy on the center console. Hopefully it's just a new shift knob and not some new form of electronic controller hell the Germans have devised. One clue to the maturity of this mule is this one seems to be sporting a wheelbase much closer to what a production version would be. The last A7 tester we saw was riding under a blacked out A4 body. When considering this along with the other cars in the lineup, and the pending Sportback, we're beginning to wonder how many niches Audi will be inventing for all these new models.

<![CDATA[Another Smuggled Audi Sketch: Audi A7]]> They started with the Audi R8 targa and A1, now the UK's Car magazine is completing its sketchy trifecta with a drawing of what could be the Audi A7. They say an insider smuggled the art from Audi's design studio in Ingolstadt, (though there's little information verifying the images' veracity). Nonetheless, the A7 is Audi's answer to coupish four-door models like the Mercedes CLS and coming Porsche Panamera, with an expected sleek, swoopy body shape and mechanicals lifted from the next A6. Car says the A7 will be fitted with a new steering rack, multilink suspension and a quattro system that's biased to the rear — a much-anticipated novelty that may put a damper on Audis' notorious understeer. Under the hood will be the usual suspects: 3.0-liter six and 4.2-liter eight, and an expected S7 will likely get the typical Lambo-derived V10, though speculation extends to an RS7 with a twin-turbo ten banger. We'll see the result early next decade. [Car]

<![CDATA[Coming Soon to a Decade Near You: The Audi A7]]>

No Audi's not done deriving new models, considering there are still a couple of counting numbers it hasn't yet appropriated. For instance, it's been a year since we've heard anything new about the coming Audi A7/S7, a new coupeish four-door set to challenge the Mercedes CLS by 2009. Ditto for the Q5 small SUV. Now, German news outlets are reporting on the company's raft of new badges it's rolling out in its quest to be a major luxury player. The A7's expected to hit in 2009 for the 2010 model year. It'll be built on the same platform as the A8 and offer a range of engines including the Lambo-derived V10 for the S7 model. MotorAuthority offers a rendering of what it could look like. No word on whether Audi's also considering a two-door sedan, a six-door hatchback or a 12-door airport bus, but insiders say put a sock in it.

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: Audi A7 Test Mule?]]>

Spies caught an extreme close-up of that Audi test mule recently spotted circling the N rburgring. This time, it was caught braving the Death Valley heat. Outwardly, there's nothing new to report, but covert vehicular agents whipped out a ruler and confirmed the Audi's wheelbase is slightly shorter than that of the A6, which Edmunds Inside Line interprets as evidence the mule hides the underpinnings of a new model, the A7, which will be of the "four-door coupe" variety. They also caught an interior shot, which may hint at the new model's more radical dash design. Or it may hint at engineers' taste in sweaters, it's hard to tell.

<![CDATA[Spy Photos: 2009 Audi A7]]>

The line expansion at Audi marches on toward an inevitable crowded house by the end of the decade. According to spies for World Car Fans, Audi's planning to add an A7 four-door "coupe" to its odd-numbered mix by 2009. You'd hardly tell from this test mule, but the model will reportedly compete with the Mercedes CLS — and a new entry from Jaguar — in the new segment of sedans whose low door jambs are most likely to split a passenger's head on entry.
