The Haldex-sourced system provides on-demand all-wheel drive which can be shifted to the wheel with the greatest grip on the fly. XWD equipped cars start at $34,870 for a 9-3 2.0T XWD Sport Sedan to a starting price on the 9-3 Aero V6T XWD SportCombi of $43,165. Also of note: The Saab 9-5, which is short for this world thanks to a new model on the way, gets a couple of new colors and some new wheels. Full details and the pricing after the jump.

SAAB EXTENDS XWD CROSS-WHEEL-DRIVE TO 9-3 2.0T MODELS

DETROIT — Saab begins the 2009 model year with attractive news for those seeking a vehicle that combines the enhanced functionality of cross-wheel-drive technology, Scandinavian design and an engaging, turbocharged driving experience.

Saab broadens the appeal of its 9-3 range – it’s most popular – for 2009 with available XWD cross-wheel-drive technology on 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models and a new 2.0T “Sport” model. Cross-wheel drive availability started in the 2008 model year with the V-6-equipped 9-3 Aero and the limited-edition Turbo X Sport Sedan and SportCombi.

“True to its Scandinavian origins, Saab has built a large part of its reputation on excellent road manners under difficult driving conditions like rain, sleet and snow,” said Steve Shannon, Saab Automobile USA general manager. “Our new cross-wheel-drive technology, which delivers unprecedented levels of driver involvement and dynamic chassis control, further illustrates Saab’s commitment to offering active safety in sporty, efficient and driver-focused vehicles.”

Saab’s XWD cross-wheel-drive is a pre-emptive, active-on-demand system that is activated only when required, limiting the impact on fuel economy while giving the car a surefooted, dynamic feel that enthusiasts embrace. It is available on all 9-3 models except the Convertible, which has a different floorpan that does not accommodate additional rear-wheel-drive components. The Saab 9-3 2.0T XWD Sport Sedan and SportCombi will come standard with additional equipment such as a winter package, moonroof and automatic transmission, while a 6-speed manual is also available.

The 2009 Saab lineup consists of the 9-3 range (2.0T and Aero Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible); the 9-5 range (2.3T and Aero Sport Sedan and SportCombi) and the 9-7X SUV range (4.2i, 5.3i and Aero).
The model-by-model snapshot of what’s new for 2009:
9-3 – Developed in Sweden with Haldex of Stockholm, Saab’s optional XWD cross-wheel-drive system, becoming available on 2009 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models, is designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability in all driving conditions.

This state-of-the-art, all-wheel drive system includes two innovative features: pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels to optimize traction at take-off; and an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential (eLSD) that allows variable torque transfer between the rear wheels. The eLSD is standard on Aero models; it is not available on 2.0T models.

Saab XWD is a fully automatic, on-demand system capable of sending up to 100 percent of engine torque to the front or rear wheels whenever necessary. While offering drivers sure-footed handling in low-grip conditions, its sophisticated operation also adds a further sporty dimension to the driving experience in all road conditions.

For 2009, Saab 9-3 “Sport” Sport Sedan buyers can choose an Aero-type appearance and performance package that includes dual bright finish tailpipes, sport bolstered seats, metallic interior decor, upgraded brakes, a sport-tuned chassis and new, sportier-looking 17 by 7.5-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Carbon Grey Metallic and Glass Grey Metallic are new exterior color choices for 2009. Grey also is offered as an additional convertible top color choice.

9-5 – The Saab 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi bring Scandinavian-inspired performance and luxury to the competitive midsize sport sedan segment. Available in both 2.3T and Aero models, they feature distinctive, aircraft-inspired design inside and out, in keeping with Saab’s roots in aviation.
The Saab 9-5 range includes the well-equipped 2.3T Sport Sedan and SportCombi models, as well as the uplevel and sportier Aero Sport Sedan and SportCombi models.

For 2009, the 9-5 range gets revised power window switches in the center console and new exterior colors, Carbon Grey Metallic and Glass Grey Metallic. Nocturne Blue Metallic is being reintroduced. Aero models receive a high-gloss black metallic interior finish and new 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels that complement the sportier look.

9-7X – Saab brings a Scandinavian flavor to the midsize SUV market with the 9-7X SUV range, which includes the performance-oriented 9-7X Aero, the 9-7X 4.2i and the 9-7X 5.3i. All feature unique Saab brand characteristics that include sophisticated styling inside and out, premium design features, and the sporty and spirited performance inherent to Saab vehicles.

Enhancements for 2009 Saab 9-7X models include new Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity that interfaces with the vehicles’ audio system, as well as two new exterior colors, Diamond Silver Metallic and Desert Tan Metallic.

Saab’s popular 9-7X Altitude Edition package also returns for 2009. It is offered for 4.2i and 5.3i models and includes DVD touch screen navigation radio and highly polished 18-inch alloy wheels and specific badging. Exterior finish choices include Carbon Flash (only non-Aero model for which this color is available) and Diamond Silver metallic.

<![CDATA[ Saab 9-3X Wagon Spotted Cuddling Next To New 9-4X ]]> The folks over at Trollhattan Saab have dug up some images of another new Swedish surprise, the Saab 9-3X lifted from a presentation also showing off the 2010 Saab 9-4X. We're told to expect this new Saab 9-3X to debut at the Paris Motor Show later this year. More below.

Obviously riding on the Saab 9-3 Sportcombi, the 9-3X appears to add the Cross Wheel Drive (XWD) system which debuted on the Saab 9-3 Turbo X, dual pipes out the back, the requisite flared plastic fenders and skid plates and of course, a bigger back end. [More at Trollhattan Saab]

<![CDATA[ Exchange Rate Puts Kibosh On Saab 9-3 Employee Purchases; More To Come? ]]> Starting with the 2009 model year, Saab will no longer allow GM employees to purchase the 9-3 at a discount, citing current exchange rates that make the 7% price cut economically unsound. Saab sold about 23,000 9-3s last year, and the company claims approximately 1,500 of those were employee sales — though we think the total may be significantly higher based on the popularity of the 9-3 in Metro Detroit. If the numbers are accurate, the change would likely mean at least a 6% drop in future 9-3 sales. The bigger question is whether GM will stop at the 9-3 or begin slashing employee purchase discounts on all imported models. Vehicles that could be affected after the jump.

The Chevy Aveo could see its employee discount reduced or removed, particularly since the Korean-built vehicle is actually posting impressive sales numbers thanks to high gas prices. The Pontiac G8, built in Australia, and the Saturn Astra, built in Belgium, were also mentioned in the report as potential candidates for disqualification.

Though the removal of employee discounts may not be big news to most of the country, Detroit-area dealers count on employee sales for a disproportionate share of their income. One Saab dealer claimed up to 40% of his business stemmed from employee purchases, the removal of which would add yet another pressure point on an already-tanking Michigan economy. <![CDATA[ 2010 Saab 9-3: We Speculate, You Decide ]]> Opel's release of the Vectra-replacing 2009 Opel Insignia is bringing with it speculation on other GM products built atop the Vectra's Epsilon platform, including the Saab 9-3. Which is where we think the impetus for the above potential p-shop, appearing on the Vince Burlapp Car Page just below those Mazda3 renders from earlier, may have come from. The 9-3's been built on the same Epsilon platform as the Vectra since 2003 and is getting seriously long in the tooth, even in the admittedly capable 2008 Saab 9-3 Turbo X form. So, we're really hoping the Aeronaut wannabes from Trollhättan get a chance to build the 2010 Saab 9-3 on something new. Especially because the Swedes have been holding things down so well on the concept front as of late, we're expecting big things from the new 9-3's styling, if not its mechanicals.

We expect a new 9-3 to share the Insignia's better engines, namely a 160hp diesel and 260hp V6, as well as the usual selection of odd capacity turbos. Call us eternal optimists, but we're holding out hope that the Turbo X's torque vectoring differential will find its to the rest of the 9-3's spec levels, giving them some desperately needed separation from their pedestrian platform mates. <![CDATA[ 2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition: Saab Builds Another Wasp-Looking Drop-Top ]]> Apparently the angry brand born from jets has a little bit of a secret — when it comes to pretty, happy and sunny colors, Saabophiles everywhere see the color yellow as some kind of a "code word." No, it's not like a foot-tapping-in-a-stall kind of thing — and we're pretty sure it's not a "P***y Magnet" kind of thing. No, apparently they just think "extra sunny" when they see it. That's what we're told anyway in the new release from the General's little Swedish meatball of a brand. While we're not sure what that means, we do know is the first-ever yellow version of the Saab 900 Convertible issued in 1991, as well as well-kept copies of the '97 version, both enjoy collector car status with meatballophiles. And now there's another little, yellow and different pill for the lovers-of-
Scandinavia to lust after — the all-new 2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition. This new and angry wasp of a Saab's based on the 2.0T version of the 9-3 drop-top. In addition to the Lynx Yellow paint, this special edition of the 9-3 also gets some "Aero-look items" like 17-inch, five spoke alloy wheels and a subtle hint of a rear spoiler. We're expecting to see more of the new bumblebee later today, but check out the exclusive pic up top and some classic jet-birthed action in the gallery below. Of course you can always hit the jump for the full press release from the General.

2008 Saab 9-3 Convertible Yellow Edition: Return of a Classic

DETROIT — While all Saab Convertibles are popular among car aficionados, owning one in yellow is an extra sunny experience. The first-ever yellow version of the Saab Convertible, issued in 1991, now enjoys collector car status, just as well-kept copies of the 1997 version are starting to get equally sought after. Yet for those preferring the attractions of an all-new open Saab, the third time may be the charm. This spring, yellow is back in a limited edition that is unprecedented in the current generation Saab Convertible - without a doubt, a future classic.

The Saab Convertible Yellow Edition is based on the 2.0T version, its turbocharged four-cylinder combining spirited performance with excellent fuel economy. In addition to its Lynx Yellow paint and a long list of standard equipment, including XM radio and OnStar, this special edition features Aero look items such as 17-inch, five spoke alloy wheels and a subtle, yet effective rear spoiler while the premium audio system will be music to all ears. The 2008 Saab Convertible Yellow Edition has a MSRP of $ 42,830, including destination charges.

Top Safety Pick
Saab pioneered the concept of a 'four season, four-seater' soft top with the launch of the first Saab Convertible in 1986, which was initially exclusively sold in the United States and immediately created a cult following. Now in its third-generation, the Saab Convertible leverages more than two decades of experience in designing an open-top car that is as practical as it is stylish and safe.

The current Saab 9-3 Convertible has a level of structural integrity, build quality and running refinement that places it at the very top of its class. Like the 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi, the Saab 9-3 Convertible was named a "2008 Top Safety Pick" by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, following its first-ever crash tests for open cars last year.

The Convertible' DynaCage system helps provide rollover protection with pop-up rear roll bars, strengthened A-pillars and sills, and automatic seat-belt pre-tensioning. Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR) are fitted to the front seats as standard to help counter the risk of neck injury in rear-end impacts.

Innovative product features further develop the Saab concept that an open-top car should be 'more than a Convertible' by offering effective transport all the year round. Saab 'ReAxs', a unique rear wheel steer characteristic in the kinematics of the suspension, contributes to the responsive chassis dynamics, as does the reinforcement of the front, rear and side structures to compensate for the absence of a fixed roof.

On the road, the Convertible delivers all the fun-to-drive qualities of the widely-acclaimed 9-3 Sport Sedan chassis. The all-turbo powertrain line-up is led by a 2.8-liter V6 rated at 255 hp in the Aero model, while the 210 hp 2.0-liter four cylinder shines with great fuel economy.

Scandinavian design
Scandinavian design ensures the styling is clean and flowing. This is an open-top car that looks like a unique model in its own right, free from any awkward styling compromises - regardless whether the top is down, or up.

The hydraulically-powered, triple layer roof automatically latches to the windshield header and deploys just 20 seconds, making it among the fastest in its class. The innovative CargoSET function connects the roof operation to a flexible, 'concertina' storage well in the trunk. When the roof is up, the well automatically retracts, releasing useful stowage space.

The interior shares the cockpit feel and driver-focused themes of the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi. Particular emphasis was placed on styling that integrates the rear passenger area, including a light colored, near seamless headlining that gives a fixed-head interior ambience. A U-shaped, Surround Trim extends from the base of A-pillars along the top of the doors, rear side trims and tonneau cover, further integrating the interior and exterior.

For ease of use and convenient rear access, the Saab Convertible front seats have an extended travel and integrated seat-belts, which eliminates the need for attachment to the B-pillar. Other interior features include profiler personalization of cabin functions as well as Night Panel 'need to know' instrument illumination.

Saab is a division of General Motors Corp. Saab Automobile USA is the importer and/or distributor of Saab 9-3, 9-5 and 9-7X automobiles for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. As of the 2008 model year, all Saabs have XM Satellite Radio and OnStar as standard equipment. Additionally, all new Saabs have no-charge scheduled maintenance, and the Saab 100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty. <![CDATA[ 2008 Saab Turbo X Priced $11K Higher In Canada, Canadian Car Sales Bouyant Despite Price Disparities ]]> Saab has just announced that the 2008 Turbo X — the new range-topping version of their 9-3 sedan — will start at $54,995 — just shy of 55,000 loonies. Do the math and that's $53,898 in real money, $11,388 (USD) more than the car will start at south of the Windsor-Detroit line. Yet vehicle sales in Canada remain strong, despite continuing price disparities and in contrast to US sales, which are on the decline.

Report on Business reports that while US auto sales are projected to fall to 14.9 million this year - the lowest level since 1997 and down from 16.1 million last year - Canadian sales are projected to hit 1.645 million, only a slight decrease from last year's 1.653. The strong market there is being credited to strong job creation.

The paper goes on to report that vehicle prices in Canada have fallen about 5% so far this year, due in part to widespread publicity about vehicle price disparities between the two countries. This despite the stabilizing exchange rate between the two currencies during the same time period. But this correction only goes a small way to addressing the higher prices Canadians are asked to pay for vehicles, which, as evidenced here, are often 20% more than their US equivalent.

Saab's Press Release announcing Canadian pricing follows:

Saab's Turbo X and Innovative New Cross Wheel Drive Technology Take Vehicle Handling and Control To New Levels

Oshawa, Ontario (April 9, 2008) - General Motors of Canada today announced pricing on the new, limited edition 2008 Saab Turbo X 9-3 variant. The all-black Turbo X takes Saab "back to the future," evoking the iconic appeal of the first black 99 and 900 Turbos while introducing Saab's cutting-edge "cross wheel drive" (XWD) technology, with pricing starting at $54,995 for the Sport Sedan version and $56,305 for the SportCombi. Saab's advanced new XWD system is also available as an option on 2008 9-3 Aero models, in both body styles, for $2,340.

Turbo X
Saab celebrates three decades of leadership in turbocharging by launching the 2008 Saab Turbo X, a driver-focused performance car that sets new standards of performance and capability for the brand. The Saab Turbo X has enhanced aerodynamic performance and a distinctive appearance, including specially designed 18-inch alloy wheels that have a grey, titanium-like finish and draw on Saab's classic three-spoke design. The "black turbo" theme is continued in the uniquely equipped interior which includes premium leather.

The Turbo X is the ultimate performance expression of the new Saab 9-3 range. It delivers levels of driver involvement and dynamic chassis control never experienced before from Saab. To exploit the full benefits of Saab XWD technology, the chassis of the Turbo X has been lowered 10 mm and the springs and dampers optimized to minimize body movement. To maintain a constant ride height, self-leveling dampers are fitted at the rear.

Stopping power is also increased with larger brake discs fitted: internally ventilated, 345 mm-diameter (13.6-inch) at the front; and externally ventilated, 292 mm (11.5-inch) at the rear. Standard 235/45 R18 tires ensure excellent grip for the 18-inch alloy wheels.

XWD driving experience

Developed in Sweden with Haldex of Stockholm, the Saab XWD "Cross Wheel Drive" system is designed to optimize vehicle handling and stability in all driving conditions. It is offered in the 2008 Saab Turbo X and Aero versions of the 9-3 Sport Sedan and SportCombi, in combination with an uprated 280hp, 2.8L V6 turbo which now delivers almost 15% more maximum torque (295 lbs./ft.) to exploit the greater traction available. Engine design features include a lightweight, all-aluminum construction, with a 60-degree angle between the cylinder banks for perfect balance; variable-inlet valve timing and twin-scroll turbocharging. XWD is offered with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The state-of-the-art all-wheel-drive system on the Turbo X includes two innovative features: pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels to optimize traction at take-off; and an active rear limited-slip differential (eLSD), allowing variable torque transfer between the rear wheels.

Saab XWD is a fully automatic, on-demand system capable of sending up to 100 percent of engine torque to the front or rear wheels, whenever necessary. While offering drivers sure-footed handling in low-grip conditions, the system's sophisticated operation also enhances the sporty driving experience in all road conditions. Fine balancing of the drive torque between the front and rear axles raises the threshold at which ESP throttle and braking interventions are triggered, providing more scope for closer driver involvement.

At take-off, a torque transfer device (TTD) is initially activated engaging the rear drive module. This pre-emptive function is a valuable improvement over current technology, which requires the detection of wheel slip before the TTD is activated. For the driver, the enhanced functionality gives maximum traction immediately for smooth, strong acceleration from rest without the possibility of any initial hesitation.

On the open road, drive torque is seamlessly and continuously varied between the axles by the control of a valve in the TTD. When cornering, Saab XWD rewards the driver by providing enhanced, more finely balanced chassis dynamics through the application of rear drive to balance oversteer and understeer characteristics, improving stability and road holding.

In highway cruising conditions, when traction or optimum grip is not an issue, only 5- to 10-percent of engine torque is typically transmitted to the rear wheels providing a greater measure of stability while helping to save fuel.

The Turbo X also features an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential (eLSD), which uses inputs from the rear wheel speed sensors and can transfer up to 40 percent of torque between the drive shafts, to whichever wheel has more grip. It represents the first application of an electronically controlled, rear limited-slip differential in the segment.

The eLSD also gives the driver enhanced control when cornering hard or completing a high-speed maneuver, such as a lane change, by momentarily applying more or less torque to either of the wheels to help the rear of the car more closely follow the direction of the front wheels. This yaw damping effect can keep the car better balanced and more tightly controlled, without requiring "outside" intervention from electronic stability aides.

General Motors of Canada (GMCL) is engineering and manufacturing advanced environmental technologies ranging from Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and hybrid systems to E85 biofuel and fuel cell vehicles - more than any other auto company right here in Canada. Headquartered in Oshawa Ontario, GMCL employs more than 19,000 people nationwide. GM of Canada manufactures vehicles, vehicle powertrains, and markets the full range of General Motors vehicles and related services through 732 dealerships and retailers across Canada. Vehicles sold through this network include Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Saturn, Hummer, Saab and Cadillac.

<![CDATA[ Saab's 1-Series Mini-Fighter To Debut in London ]]> The folks at Trollhättan are not content to let their counterparts at Audi, BMW, Volvo &mdash pretty much every European luxury counterpart &mdash dominate the upscale small car market. Thus we hear they'll be introducing a concept version of the 9-1 entry level vehicle at London that will be "sporty enough to fit the Saab character" with the "functionality to attract younger buyers." Whatever that means.

We're not sure what form it will come in, but speculation seems to point to a two-door coupe with a hatch/tailgate. The drawing above was supposedly of the 2008/2010 9-3, but we think it's probably a fair indicator of what the 9-1 might look like. At this point, it's anyone's guess. [Autocar]

<![CDATA[ Deal of the Week: Saab 9-3 SportCombi ]]> Another Saab up on the Jalopnik DotW? Look at it this way, Saab's sales woes are your purchase gains. This week we're intrigued by a $4,000 rebate on the 9-3 SportCombi (among other models). Granted, GM's tenure as steward of the company birthed by aircraft engineers hasn't been the most fecund period in its history. And while things have been looking up for the 9-3, sales numbers haven't budged. The car's still hampered by cliff-face depreciation and GM's front-drive Epsilon platform, which puts it out of the running among RWD-only enthusiasts. But the poky base four — in the previously cryptic "Arc" and "Linear" models — is long gone, replaced in 2006 with a 2.0-liter turbo four producing 210 hp. The 2.8-liter V6 in the Aero model gets 250. Sure the transmission offerings are one cog light, and power numbers...

...won't win any stoplight wars — oh, and the interior is still behind the best in class — but it still can handle a b-road without flinching. And look at what you get for a pre-incentive MSRP of between $27,495 and $33,700: standard ABS, traction control, stability control and front, side and head airbags, a five-year/100,000 mile warranty, including a transferrable powertrain component, 24/7 roadside assistance and courtesy transportation. And if you choose the Aero, there's a free two-day performance-driving program at Road Atlanta. Of course, the SportCombi paradoxically has 0.2 cubic feet of cargo space less than the sedan. But that's just fine; we're huge MC Escher fans. (NOTE: Better-looking 2008 model shown.) [Saab via MSN Autos]

<![CDATA[ Off Comes the Top: New Saab 9-3 Convertible ]]>

If you happened to be near Trollhattan last weekend, you'd have seen the new Saab 9-3 convertible in all its newly sculpted glory. Glory may be too strong a word, but the slightly rehabbed entry Saab did get a more stylish face and what Saab's marketing as "trifuel" engine choices for Europe that include gasoline diesel, or ethanol-ready powerplants. The 2.8-liter aluminum V6, the company says, was purpose-built for the line's all-turbo application. Sadly, the convertible doesn't get Saab/Haldex's new XWD system that actively manages the front-rear torque split. Saab fans, discuss. We're going out for a cup of salmon.

Press Release:

Saab 9-3 Convertible
More Than a Convertible...

The 9-3 Convertible confirms Saab's leading position in the premium convertible segment and is the product of more than 20 years' experience in designing four-seater, four season soft tops that are as practical as they are stylish.

The Saab Convertible has a level of structural integrity, build quality and running refinement that places it at the very top of its class. Innovative product features further develop the Saab concept that an open-top car should be 'more than a Convertible' by offering effective all-year-round transport. In addition to its functional qualities, the Convertible also offers strong driving appeal through sharing the excellent chassis dynamics of the 9-3 range.

The extensive engine line-up incorporates a 'tri-fuel' choice of gasoline, diesel or bioethanol (E85) powered engines. It is led by an all-aluminum 2.8-liter V6 turbocharged engine rated at 255 hp (188 kW); a powerful two-stage turbo diesel packing 400 Nm of torque and a choice of two Saab BioPower (E85) flex-fuel engines.

Exterior Design
Well-balanced proportions and a purposeful stance endow the car with a strong, sporty character that, roof up or down, echoes its fun-to-drive appeal.

• Unique 'stand alone' design. Scandinavian design flair that ensures the lines are clean and flowing, but never cold or clinical. An open top car that looks like a unique model in its own right, free from any awkward styling compromises.

• Bold frontal styling. The prominent central grille with its wing motif is inspired by the Aero X concept car, as is the U-shaped pressing in that classic Saab clamshell hood. The form of the grille and headlamp units is complemented a smooth bumper molding with a deep trapezoidal air intake. .

• Clean rear deck styling. Pop-up roll bars and retractable rear head streamlined by twin fairings, hinting at Convertible's sporty character.

• Coupé looks. The soft-top has a taut, smooth appearance through use of six cross-braces and strong tensioning.

• Unique 'Surround Trim'. U-shaped styling line extends from base of A-pillars along the top of the doors, rear side trims and tonneau cover. Color-keyed with metallic colors, it integrates the front and rear passenger areas and visually unites the only top exterior surfaces that 'come inside' when the top is up.

• Hydraulically-powered, triple layer roof. Automatic self-latching to the windshield header and deploys fully in just 20 seconds. Among fastest in its class.

• Integral rain gutter sewn into side of the soft-top fabric. Prevents water droplets dripping down on to the seats when a door is opened.

• Weight-saving design. Soft-top frame, swivelling braces and front header rail all made from magnesium.

• Unique tonneau cover operation. For quicker roof deployment, the tonneau has a unique two-stage cycle, rising horizontally and then moving rearwards parallel to the top of the trunk. More robust operation, better sealing.

• 'CargoSET' Automatic trunk expansion. Soft-top connected to flexible, 'concertina' storage well. When the roof is in position, the well retracts, releasing useful storage space in the trunk.

• Class-competitive 0.34 Cd (roof up). Soft-top resistant to high speed 'ballooning'.

Interior Design and Features
The interior shares the cockpit feel and driver-focused themes of the Sport Sedan and SportCombi. Particular emphasis was placed on styling that integrates the rear passenger area, including a 'f'ixed-head' interior ambience.

• Front and rear passenger areas integrated by consistent styling themes, contributing to 'bespoke' character.

• 'Fixed-head' interior ambience. First convertible to offer soft-top with light colored headlining. Combines with near seamless fitting to give impression of fixed-head interior.

• Front seats with integrated seat-belts unique to Convertible. Deeply bolstered for comfort and support.

• Easy entry/exit for rear passengers. Single action movement of front seats through 243 mm and elimination of 'B' pillar-mounted seat belts.

• Rear seat comfortably shaped and upholstered. Deep squabs with back-rest kept at a comfortable angle, not compromised by packaging requirements.

• 'Hydroblox' water repellent textile for seat upholstery. Unique feature.

• 'Profiler' customization. A wide range of functions can be pre-set according to personal preference including: anti-theft alarm, parking assistance, rain sensitive wipers and automatic climate control.

• Saab ComSense functionality minimizes potential for driver distraction through 'dynamic workload management', suppressing messages/phone calls, includes Night Panel instrument illumination dimming to reduce visual 'clutter'
• 'Light room' or 'dark room' interior themes. Beige or black seats, door panels, rear side panels, lower front fascia and carpet.

• 'Intelligent' dual zone air conditioning. Automatic Climate Control (ACC) switches to offer manual heat settings when soft-top is lowered.

• Infotainment systems include DVD/GPS satellite navigation with large 6.5-inch color monitor, Bluetooth™ Phone Integration system (BPIS), providing automatic connection to audio system with operation by voice control or steering wheel buttons. Auxiliary input socket standard with all infotainment systems. .

• Foldable wind deflector for easy stowage among wide range of accessories.

• Choice of Linear and Vector 'forms', plus 'Aero' sporting flagship. Each with uniquely-designed seat upholstery and 16/17-inch alloy wheels. Aero adds sports bodystyling, lowered chassis and optional 18-inch alloy wheels.

Chassis
The 9-3 Convertible retains the sporty handling characteristics of the Sport Sedan. The rigid body structure provides a solid foundation for suspension systems with impressively low levels of noise, vibration and harshness.

• 'ReAxs' passive rear wheel steer characteristic. The kinematics of the rear suspension are tuned for a unique rear wheel steer response for optimum handling and stability.

• Four-link independent rear suspension. High lateral stiffness for stability and grip; longitudinal compliance for ride comfort.

• Front suspension by MacPherson struts with lower A-arms mounted on a hydroformed (hollow), sub-frame. High lateral bushing stiffness for good steering response and precision; high longitudinal compliance for ride comfort.

• Low mounted steering rack gives excellent feel and precision with progressive power assistance and fast responses.

• Mechanical Brake Assist (MBA). Automatically boosts braking pressure when driver presses hard on pedal, reducing stopping distance. Standard fitment.

• Advanced chassis electronic systems. Saab-tuned 'user friendly' ESP® (Electronic Stability Program). EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), CBC (Cornering Brake Control) and TCS (Traction Control System) all standard features.

• Minimized unsprung weight for better ride comfort. Hub carriers, brake calipers, lower control arms in the front suspension and the toe and lower links in the rear suspension made of aluminum.

Body Structure and Systems
The 9-3 Convertible was developed in tandem with Sport Sedan, ensuring all the special structural requirements for an open top car could be accommodated from the outset of design work. Structural integrity and build quality positions it at the very top of its class.

• Excellent torsional rigidity (11,500 Nm/degree), despite the absence of a fixed roof, contributes to excellent running refinement, stiff suspension mountings and a strong safety structure.

• Second 'supplementary' chassis. To compensate for absence of fixed roof, torsional stiffness raised by completely integrated, additional strengthening system, linking front, rear and side structures.

• High and ultra high strength steel widely used, accounting for about 60 per cent of the Convertible's body weight.

• Reinforced A-pillars and windshield header rail able to withstand loading 2.2 times greater than weight of the car.

• Low speed impact resistance. 'Self-repairing' bumpers and deformable crash boxes provide bodywork protection in impacts up to 15 kph, minimizing accident repair bills.

Powertrain
Fine chassis dynamics are complemented by outstanding driveability and refinement from the all-turbo powertrain line-up, which includes 2.8V6 and 2.0-liter four cylinder turbo gasoline engines, a powerful diesel with two-stage turbocharging two Saab BioPower variants. All notable for typically strong, mid-range torque characteristics.

• All-aluminum 2.8-liter turbo engine. The first six cylinder unit to be purpose-built for Saab's turbocharged application. Offering 255 hp (188 kW), it combines multi-cylinder refinement with outstanding turbo performance. Single twin-scroll turbocharger fed by both cylinder banks.

• All-aluminium 2.0-liter turbo engines. Saab developed and tuned for 150 (110 kW), 175 (129 kW) and 210 hp (147 kW) with high torque for swift overtaking. All internal components unique to Saab. Balancer shafts for greater running refinement.

• 1.9TTiD engine with two-stage turbocharging develops 180 hp (132 kW) and exceptional torque of 400 Nm with two turbos integrated as a single unit and common rail, direct and multiple fuel injection. A 150 hp (110 kW) version with a single VNT turbocharger also offered. . A maintenance-free particulate filter is .fitted as standard.

• Choice of two BioPower engines givemore power and torque when running on E85 fuel. Saab BioPower unique in offering flex-fuel engines with enhanced performance, as well as reduced fossil CO2 emissions.

• Wide transmission choice. Uprated five and six-speed manual gearboxes, with six-speed units standard for 2.8V6, 210 hp/155 kW and 175 hp/ 129 kW turbos and both turbo diesels.. Five-speed, adaptive automatic transmission with Saab Sentronic manual gear selection and optional steering wheel controls. Six-speed units offered with the 2.8V6 turbo and turbo diesels.

Safety
Saab products consistently show well in real-life safety surveys, and the 9-3 Convertible joins 9-3 Sport Sedan in achieving a maximum five star EuroNCAP crash safety rating test study. The 9-3 Convertible meets the same crash performance targets as the sedan.

• Crash testing based on 'real life' research. Test and simulation configurations developed from Saab database covering more than 6,100 real-life road collisions involving Saab cars on Swedish roads.

• Wide range of crash test configurations used in development of body structure and restraint systems for 9-3 range, including eight different types of rollover test for the Convertible.

<![CDATA[ Spy Photos: 2008 Saab 9-3 Spotted Ahead of Late '07 Launch ]]>

The General's favorite Swedes are approaching go time for their de-topped version of the new 9-3. But some joker with a digicam has apparently uncovered a proto-production model in country. The most noticeable difference is of course that new face, lifted wholesale from the company's Aero X concept, first shown at the 2006 Geneva auto show. And judging from the, er, aero kit, it's likely the Aero trim level. Natch. [Thanks to Dennis for the tip.]

<![CDATA[ More on the Saab 9-3 Facelift -- Official Reveal ]]>

More shots of the new Saab 9-3 have arrived on the i-spot on occasion of the new car's official reveal. As mentioned last week, the newly nipped and tucked mask — lifted from the Aero X concept — could be the least-significant change to GM's neglected Swede, what with that new Haldex AWD system with e-diff and turbo V6 upgrades said to be on the way. More officialities, after the jump.

Press Release:

New Saab 9-3 Range: Sharper Looks Showcase Enhanced Performance

The new Saab 9-3 range will feature bold styling, inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car, backed by cutting edge technology for greater driving appeal. .

With all-new front bodywork, 'signature' lighting, new door panels and rear styling features, the latest generation 9-3 acquires a more focused, assertive stance, reflecting the introduction of technical advances aimed at delivering an even more rewarding experience behind the wheel.

Most noticeable is the sharper frontal styling, which adopts grille and hood themes first seen on the Aero X concept, together with a return of Saab's classic 'clamshell' design. This new 'face' is reinforced by other exterior changes that all combine to give the range a clearer, more distinctive Saab identity.

"We are introducing significant developments across three key areas: design, performance and handling," says Jan Åke Jonsson, Managing Director of Saab Automobile. "The result is a major step forward in strengthening the visual and driving appeal of our core product line-up, which accounts for about two-thirds of global sales."

The new 9-3 range comprises Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible models, each offering a unique 'tri-fuel' engine choice of gasoline, diesel or BioPower (E85). Available in three forms, Linear, Vector and Aero, the range goes on sale from August (TBC).

<![CDATA[ Saab To Build STI Fightin' 9-3 ]]> saabti1.jpg

The true Scandinavian black metal fans over at SaabScene got themselves a couple of leaked images of the soon to be refreshed 9-3. That doesn't really interest us too much, as it brings a FWD-knife to the 3-series led RWD-gunfight. Though we do remember Mr. Dan Neil telling us that the 9-3 is one of his favorite cars. So what do we know? However, what does excite us is what the elite experts at Motor Authority are saying; the new 9-3 will get a Haldex AWD system and a 300 hp turbo V6. Saab, we didn't know you had it in you. Plus, now that the Volvo Rs are no more, hoons will still have a Swedish-ish option. And yes, you can get the good stuff in the SportCombi. Go hot wagons, go!

Apparently, all that design language introduced with the Aero-X concept at last year's Geneva show will start to rub off on the Saab 9-3 for its next iteration. The new face is the major difference between this test prototype and the current model. It's just in time for the GM brand's 60th anniversary. As Winding Road points out the overhang is shorter than that of the 9-5, whose pronounced front makes the top-line model look too kludgy. Spies say LED taillamps will be an option. We'll see it in time for the 2008 model year.

<![CDATA[ Question of the Day: What Would Make Saab Relevant ]]>

J-vlar! The Trollhattan Saab bunch went all pear-shaped over our post yesterday in which we cued up their soothsaying on a prospective reskinning and AWD addition in the next 9-3. They say we spent too many words harping on a connection between the 2002 9-3x concept, and apparently too few genuflecting to their prophetic Sabbishness. But shrill cries of the wronged aside, we've got a question. With Saab appearing to wither on GM's vine of brands, what would it take to get it back to a place of reverance among those who should give a shit? After all, we have fond memories of being shuttled between frozen ponds for ad-hoc hockey matches, in the back seat of a 900 Turbo. There was that sound, that pull, and that feeling of protection, no matter how many Irish coffees our yuppie fathers had downed in the interim. We put it to you.

<![CDATA[ Over the Back Fence: Saab to Redesign 9-3 for 2008 ]]>

The boys at Trolhattan Saab say they have a line on Saab's next 9-3. According to the T-Hats, the Saab 9-3 will get a major facelift and an all-wheel-drive option for 2008, though will remain on GM's global midsize (Epsilon) platform. Design elements from the company's 2002 9-3x Concept (pictured) could see their way into the new niner, which they say will be unveiled in June 2007 in Sweden. According to Edmunds Inside Line, however, GM says a new 9-3 isn't on the docket until 2010. Still, an updated 9-3 can't come soon enough for Saab; but will it be enough to save it?

<![CDATA[ Born From GM: Saab Prices 2007 Model Year Lineup ]]> saab_jet_logo.jpg
We just got the press release from the company selling off the sons and daughters of jets — and Saab's '07 US lineup has a starting price of $26,915 with a top out at $43,120. Although it may seem it's a few grand higher than the 2006 pricing entry point of $23,710 — it's really about the same, because that was including the 9-2 model, which as the release notes, was discontinued cause the General sold off its share of Fuji Heavy Industries. Sorry kiddies, that means a touch less brand-engineering this year. Despite that bad good news, we've got the full pricing deets below the jump.

FOR RELEASE: 2006-09-08

2007 Saab Family of Vehicles: Priced and Ready to Roll

DETROIT - Saab USA has released prices for the brand's family of vehicles for model year 2007. Consumers can step into the entry-luxury vehicle segment starting at $26,915. The line-up tops out at $43,120. Following are the MSRPs, including a $745 destination fee, for the entire vehicle line-up. Included in the overall line-up are seven car variants that achieve 30 mpg, as rated by the EPA, or better on the highway.

Saab 9-3: New interior inspired by classic 900

The biggest news for the 9-3 range is the new interior for 2007. It features a redesigned cockpit with new automatic climate control and infotainment systems, a larger instrument cluster with chrome details and new interior trim. The new interior bears resemblance to the classic lines of the first generation Saab 900, and features a new navigation system as an option.

The Saab 9-3 2.0T Sport Sedan is priced at a very attractive $26,915, while the Aero V6 model takes off at $33,220. Drivers looking for a little more diversity in their vehicle's capacity can get into a Saab 9-3 2.0T or Aero V6 SportCombi priced at $27,915 and $34,120 respectively. Those who long for the open air while cruising around town can opt for the Saab 9-3 2.0T or Aero Convertible, priced at $37,515 and $43,120 respectively.

Saab 9-5: Return of the Aero

The Saab 9-5 line, refreshed inside and out just this spring, begins at $35,115 for the 2.3T sedan, and $36,210 for the Aero Sedan - both representing an excellent value in its segment. Customers seeking more cargo options can hop into a 9-5 2.3T or Aero SportCombi starting at $36,115 and $37,210, respectively.

With its exemplary safety, surprising functionality and standard fuel economy, the 9-5 SportCombi is an excellent option for those looking for a sophisticated alternative to a traditional truck.

Saab 9-7X SUV: OnStar-based Navigation Standard

The Saab 9-7X sport utility vehicle, which made its debut in 2005, is an enticing option for drivers looking for the ride height and versatility of a SUV with sporty sedan-like road manners. New for 2007 is standard turn-by-turn navigation. The 9-7X 4.2i and the 9-7X 5.3i V8 are priced at $39,735 and $41,735 respectively.

For the 2007 model year, the Saab 9-2X has been discontinued as a result of the dissolution of the General Motors relationship with Fuji Heavy Industries.

Fuel Economy: Seven variants at 30 mpg

Included in the overall line-up are seven car variants that achieve 30 mpg, as rated by the EPA, or better on the highway. Those vehicles are the Saab 9-3 2.0T SportSedan six-speed manual; 9-3 2.0T SportSedan five-speed automatic; 9-3 2.0T SportCombi six-speed manual; 9-3 2.0T SportCombi five-speed automatic; 9-3 Convertible 5-speed automatic; 9-5 2.3T Sedan five-speed manual; and the 9-5 2.3T SportCombi five-speed manual.

Saab is a division of General Motors Corp. Saab USA is the importer and/or distributor of Saab 9-3, 9-5 and 9-7X automobiles for Saab Automobile AB, Sweden. Saab offers vehicle warranty coverage up to five years or 100,000 miles. Visit www.saabusa.com for more information.

<![CDATA[ Saab Bio-Power Hybrid Unveiled in Stockholm ]]>

At the Stockholm motor show today, Saab took the wraps off its BioPower Hybrid concept, a 9-3 convertible powered by a turbocharged, flexfuel-capable gas-electric hyrbrid-drive drivetrain/UNIVAC computer/Flux Capacitor/Maytag dryer. The BioPower powertrain uses electric motors to provide a kind of hyperspace torque-boost of up to a devilish 666Nm (491 lbs.-ft.); that's when the electric motors fire up to drive the rear wheels, making the cabrio de-facto all-wheel drive. <![CDATA[ Saabs Based on Aero-X Concept Design Language Could Show up in 2008 ]]>

As went Cadillac, so will go Saab, at least according to Saab's general manager (who's apparently less inclined than we to attempt an awkward tense shift). Just as Cadillac's Evoq concept set the architectural pick for the brand's next wave of cars, the Aero-X concept Saab showed in Geneva will inform its next-generation models. And Saab badly needs that kind of mojo, considering it only sold around 38,000 cars in the US last year. The first to see some Aero-Xness will likely be the 2008 Saab 9-3, according to AutoWeek.

<![CDATA[ Saab to Reveal Special Edition 9-3 Convertable in Los Angeles ]]>

Saab announced today it was unveiling a special-edition 9-3, the 20 Years Edition Convertible, to celebrate — yep, you guessed it — the score of years elapsed since Saab launched its soft-top model in 1986. Saab will produce a mere 400 of the 20 Years edition, which as MPH points out, is basically a decked-out Aero model with snappy Electric Blue Metallic paint. Buyers should be prepared to bring along a spare Brinks truck — honoring those 20 years will cost $44,615 (including destination).
