2009 porsche 911

2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 4: AWD Bruce

For 2009, the entire Porsche 911 Carrera lineup has been given a refresh, and now we've got the details and first shots of the all-wheel-drive 911 Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S models. Thanks to direct-injection, the 3.6-liter flat-six in the Carrera 4 now makes 345 HP, and the 3.8-liter unit in the Carrera 4S makes a Bruce-tastic 385 HP. But the first thing you likely noticed was the new reflecto' bar bridging the LED rear lights that brings to mind the old air-cooled 911. All the other visual changes carry over from the rear-wheel-drive models, though as usual, the all-wheel-drive models have a slightly (just 1.73") wider stance. That's pretty precise, but hey, they're Germans. Check out all the uber-precise details in the press release below the jump.

question of the day

Orange or Green?

Listen up you Porker lovers, time to get down to brass tacks. Steve N wrote in with this weekend's Question:
"So you wanna buy a 997 GT3 RS eh? Well, there is only one question, do you get orange or green?"
Golly, that's almost as hard a choice as pink or brown Coke or Pepsi. We'll just stay out of this and let y'all battle it out. Though, the black version with the orange wheels and trim offends our delicate sensibilities just a touch. More »

Frankfurt Auto Show: Porsche GT2 Roundup

From the can't get nearly enough of the Porsche GT2 department comes these shots from the Frankfurt floor. Yes, we have posted the spy photos and brochure. And yes, we've even unearthed a video of the widowmaker. Alas, we have yet to find a good frankfurter mit mustard here in Frankfurt. Specifications and press release redux after the jump. More »

Frankfurt Auto Show: Turbo Cab, F*** Yeah!

Considering the 997 911 Turbo Cabriolet hasn't had a proper intro until this week at the Frankfurt show. The twin turbocharged 3.6 liter six-cylinder has Porsche's Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) that reduces turbo lag while providing requisite pull at higher revs. The powerplant already generates 480 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque at 1,950 rpm. Porsche also offers the "Sport Chrono Turbo Package", which includes an overboost function that produces intermittent peak torque of 501 lb-ft. You can't tell from the Frankfurt show floor shots, but the turbo cab can get to 62 mph faster with the Tiptronic S tranny than with the manual (four seconds vs. 3.8). Robot shifting, f*** yeah!

Porsche GT2 in Promo Video

Could Porsche have made this GT2 Commercial better? Yeah, sure. Like, if the car turned more than once, well, we'd be all over that. Or if the clip was ten minutes longer. That would work, too. However, motion picture footage of a 530 hp 911 being chased by a helicopter, well, we ain't kicking it out of bed. Enjoy. [via SportsCar27]

Spy Photos: Porsche 911 GT2

With a top speed we're told should exceed 200 mph and a horsepower rating expected to approach 550, the 997-based Porsche 911 GT2's the highly anticipated successor to the 996-based GT2. With the new hotness from the Brucetastic automaker founded by an Austrian expected to drop later this year, it's to be expected we'd be seeing more and more testers out on the road. Like these snapshots the folks at the Auto mag published every Week have snapped up of the super-Porsche taken by Priddy-pride photographer, Chris Doane. More »

The Widowmaker Cometh! Porsche GT2 To Drop This November

It's that magic time of year, when trophy wives the world over begin licking their chops and reminding their wealthy husbands how much sexier they would look in a Porsche. Yes friends, the new GT2 is nigh, and it is still nuts. In case you don't know the drill, the GT2 is a Porsche Turbo juiced up on angel dust. The 996 GT2 had 450 horsepower and RWD, as opposed to the regular Turbo's 420 hp and AWD system. All who drove it described the GT2 as "frightening," if not more than a little bit dangerous. The more things change... The new 997 GT2 also sheds its all-wheels drivenness, but instead of a mere 30-hp bump, Porsche is mainlining 50 more. Oh, and the new GT2 will be about 50 pounds lighter than the old one. Expect it at your local dealer this November, just two short months after the Turbo Cabriolet comes to town. Hope you have a good prenup. Jump for pics. More »

Porsche Releases New 911 Turbo Drop-Top

The 911 was first given the 997 series designation with the 2004 2004 release of the 2005 model year redesign, and as expected, the new-for-2008 model of the Porshe's iconic convertible won't be the start of a new designation, nor will it receive much in the way of new styling for the upcoming year when it hits "the starting line" on September 8th. The main changes appear to be similar to the new-look of the coupĂ© version — that is, a larger air intake on the front-end, some new front and rear lighting. The highly precise engineers at Porsche have also found a way to drop the top on the 911 with only an increase of about 154 pounds in engineering and structural enhancements on top of the weight of the coupĂ©. All sorts of over-hyped PR verbiage like "deliberate design," "exemplary value" and "appealing driving characteristics" in the press release after the jump. More »

Spy Photos: Still Even More Yet on the Porsche GT2

The son of widowmaker is nigh. the GT2 may be the last of the 997-model Porsche to debut, but it'll likely be worth twice the wait at today's prices. With horsepower rumored to be in the 500 range, the Le Mans-ready niner will be the fastest factory Porsche 911 in history. It may also be the first to hit 200 mph with no modifications. The wraps come off in Frankfurt later this year, or so it's said. More »

Spy Photos: Still More on the Porsche GT2

We've seen the "evil" Porsche GT2 in black. Now check out the "good" GT2 that'll untie the sports-car market from the train tracks and save the day. Tortured analogies aside, here's more imagery of the upcoming 997 Porsche GT2, caught recently during cold-weather testing. Take particular note of the subtle body-panel changes, roll cage and brake calipers that could stop a runaway truck loaded with osmium. But periodic-table jokes aside, the GT2 will be producing more than 500 horsepower when it rolls out later this year, likely in Frankfurt. It might even be the first 9er to break 200 mph right out of the box. Wouldn't that be something? More »

Thar She Blows! Twin-Turbo Moby Dick Porsche 935

With 750+ horsepower cracking from a flat-six thanks to creative use of turbocharging and Bosch mechanical injection, the Porsche 935 represents the apex of crazed eighties IMSA Group 5 twin-turbo gas huffing mayhem. The Porsche brain trust produced many variants of the 935 six-banger in answer to the ever changing race series rules regarding use of hair dryers. Some of these engines overtook the output of the twelve-cylinder 917 engine with more than 800 horsepower. This particular 935 is going up on the block at the Amelia Island RM Auction March 10, and is expected to fetch the princely sum 950 thousand clams or so. Our morning trip to Coinstar netted $7.53, an arcade token, and a stripped bolt, so we're unfortunately out of the running. More »

Call Dr. Evil, Go to Florida

Little beats the Porsche 917 when it comes to dead sexy and dangerous racing machines. The 917 was first rolled out at the 1969 Geneva Auto Show, and followed up the 908 with more power thanks to four more cylinders than the previous eight. Early reports at handling were scary, with the car evidently moving about the track at will once it got into the 200 mph zone. None of this stopped the 917 and its drivers from winning races. This particular 1971 version will be up on the Amelia Island RM Auction block March 10, and is expected to fetch up to a million dollars. More »

TechArt's Porsche GTstreet Coming to Geneva

It was just a matter of time before TechArt unveiled its take on the new 997 Porsche 911 Turbo. That day will arrive next month, when the GTstreet takes a bow at the Geneva show. And compared to the company's last iteration, the bar has been lifted in an upward fashion. TechArt boosted horsepower to 630 from the Turbo's stock 480, and sent the torque number skyward to 604 lbs-ft from 457. TechArt says that's good for a zero-to-62 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 214 mph. It's completed with a functional body kit (one would hope) and according to a teaser sketch, the show car will sport a paint job inspired by some manner of Halloween fantasy. Boo, indeed. More »

Car Porn of the Day: Porsche 997 RSR

Starting the day with a Porsche 911 (997) RSR LeMans GT2 car being flogged on the UK's Brands Hatch rivals the most B12-enriched, artificially flavored powdered drink mix preferred by astronauts. Studies show that's the case. More »

Jalopnik Fantasy Garage: RUF RT12

Just before my teenage years, my mother's interest in early American antiques blossomed into a fully-blown, fully-funded mania. Our house was filled with precious furniture, from highboys to tea tables. The walls were crammed with portraits, maps and samplers. Surfaces were covered with silver, baskets and early glass. You may have been told not to tip your seat backwards at dinner, but I bet your butt wasn't parked on a Windsor chair. According to Mom, "A person's collection always reveals their personality." In this same spirit of refined excess and psychological insight, we're about to embark on a mutual adventure in automotive acquisition: the Jalopnik Fantasy Garage (JFG). Here's the deal...

Lookee Here: Next 911 Getting Night Vision?

The scenesters over at German Car Scene saw something curious in a spy shot depicting the next, facelifted Porsche 911, so they got out their speculation-ray-specs and went to work. Slightly concealed beneath the car's headlight lenses appear two dark objects that may be thermal-imaging sensors, indicating the car will get some kind of night-vision system, like BMW and Mercedes offer on their flagship models. Mr. Wizard, to the courtesy phone, Mr. Wizard. More »

Gunning for a Speed Record: H&R's Promo Porsche

Remember H&R? They're the German aftermarket suspension shop selling the 24k gold-plated springs for Dubai sultans' Ferraris. Now, they're addressing yet another mode of automotive hyperbolics, sponsoring a severely juiced Porsche 911 that will attempt to break the speed record for world's fastest street-legal car. The car's given name, Mission 400 Plus, gives away the goal: 400 km/h+ on the Nardo test track in Italy, where it'll attempt to break that 248.5 mph barrier in 2007. Success will put it in range of the Bugatti Veyron, Koenigsegg CC and McLaren F1, though it's not technically a production car like those supercars (which means it'll get a fat asterisk next to its final number). It's almost like anyone can spend a few hundred grand on a 1,000 hp car, and try to get it to not come apart at V-max. Piece of cake. More »

Spy Photos: More on the Porsche GT2

The widowmaker is back, and spies say it's a symphony on wheels. The new-generation Porsche GT2, spotted on the N rburgring recently, is the last to arrive (and most insane) of the 997-generation 911s. The rear-drive, weight-reducted beast — carbon fiber et. al. — is said to produce in the neighborhood of 500 hp. Who needs tuning shops when all that craziness rolls right out of the new Porsche Motorsports center in Weissach. Why, indeed. More »
