As the owner of a '94, I'll tell you that the 840 doesn't handle all that well and is expensive to fix. But, it is surprisingly reliable and you tend to fall in love with it and all its bloated '90s technology. Plus, most people don't know what the hell it is, which is always fun. Nice price.
840's are pretty easy on the wallet, it is the early 850's with the active suspension that will drive you to bankruptcy. I do think that they styling on these cars has not held up that well. #bmw840ci
This is basically a 928 with a trunk. Too big to be a sports car, too small to be a useful sedan, lots of gratuitous, expensive technology, and styling that only really blows away a thin slice of the population that wanted it new. #bmw840ci
This is my favorite BMW design ever. I will own one of these one day (but would rather have the CSi myself). Still 180k for over $10k is crack pipe. On the east coast these go for cheaper, I was pricing them a few years ago and ones with 80k-100k miles were going for $10-$12k. On the west coast they are demanding more, $14-$18k for similar condition/specs. Either way, you will drop a few grand within a year on maintenance for this bitch, so crackpipe.

@MushyHeirloom: If it's made it to 180k then Nikasil isn't going to be an issue. Most Nikasil failures are in the 60-8ok mark and should have happened years ago.
These engines are actually easy to work on so don't be afraid. #bmw840ci
@MushyHeirloom: check the oil filter. That's it, right by the radiator. You can change it faster than you can refill the washer water. The water pump is right there, front and center and only requires the fan to be removed. The plastic engine cover comes off with 4 push-down buttons and requires no tools at all. Even the throttle has a small tab on it so you can use your finger to rev the engine without having to mess about with the throttle cable.
BMW's are made to be serviced. They aren't Jags or Ferraris that require engine removal.

This is pretty much typical price range for these cars. There's nothing special about this specimen and it's an automatic. Not really crack pipe material but it isn't a nice price either, so I hit that freebase. #bmw840ci
Sturdy? Did you mean "Turdy." These are not reliable vehicles, and even normal wear items after 185K are going to be stratospherically expensive. Which one of these V8s had the cylinder lining issue?
Plus, I simply never understood the 8 series. It's appreciably less pretty than the E24 6 series, it's not fast enough to be a serious GT, and it's not lux enough to be a serious personal coupe. And it was expensive as all get out in the early '90s. I'm surprised they sold as many as they did. #bmw840ci

I don't have proof, but I suspect the engine was replaced as the Nikasil blocks did not last much past 100K. #bmw840ci

Also, "Nikasil".
Might not quite be crack, but it's no great deal. Hash Pipe.

Aye, not quite crack, definitely hash. #bmw840ci

"Easy" to me requires my being able to actually get my hands where they need to be... as such, I guess I'd have to really see one, but... #bmw840ci
