Well, now we've got the official details from BMW, and we've included the full press release for the new 7-Series after the jump. Sure, focus all you want on the horsepower (407 HP in the 750i and 750Li, 326 HP in the 740i and 740Li) or the torque (600 Nm of torque in the 750i and 750Li, 450 Nm of torque in the 740i and 740Li) or even the 155 MPH electronically-limited top speed, but the one thing that's sticking out in our minds is the new "individual pedestrian recognition" night vision system. That's right, the new BMW 7 will tell you when there's a person walking in front of the car, even at mid-double-digit speeds. See, there's a little icon of a person and everything. We're just wondering whether there's a similar icon for moose, deer or other woodland creatures. We'll have to see once we get behind the wheel ourselves in rural Michigan.

The launch of the fifth generation of the BMW 7 Series sets a new benchmark in automotive luxury, technical innovation and class-leading driving dynamics, combined with emissions reducing and fuel saving technology.

The flagship of the BMW model range debuts in November with a host of world firsts and will initially be offered with a choice of three powerplants, one diesel and two petrol engines. The two petrol-powered cars will be offered with a long-wheelbase body too. All three engines produce more power yet use less fuel and produce less emissions than the models they replace.

The BMW 730d sets a new benchmark in terms of drivetrain performance. The new all-aluminium 3.0-litre straight-six cylinder diesel engine produces 245hp at 4,000rpm. Its effortless real world driving smoothness comes courtesy of a peak torque figure of 540Nm attained from 1,750rpm through to 3,000rpm.

The 2,993cc powerplant posts the lowest ever CO2 figure of any previous BMW 7 Series and it is also the most economical 7 Series ever. Its 192g/km emission figure is class-leading for conventionally powered luxury cars, while no other competitor comes close to its 39.2mpg combined consumption figure. It can accelerate from zero to 62mph in 7.2 seconds and has a 153mph top speed.

To put the BMW 730d's competitive advantage in context this luxurious vehicle records near identical fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to the Mercedes C320CDi - a car that is two market segments below the 7 Series and is smaller and lighter than the BMW.

The impressive performance of the 730d is, in part, possible due to third-generation common-rail direct injection technology, incorporating piezo injectors, that operates at a peak pressure of 1,800 bar. This system ensures a near perfect combustion process. Weighing 185kgs the new six-cylinder diesel engine is also 5kgs lighter than its predecessor.

The BMW 730d is set to be the biggest seller in the UK, accounting for approximately 85 per cent of sales.

The BMW 750i and 750Li are the range flagships. The new 4,395cc V8 engine from the recently launched X6, featuring twin-turbochargers and high-precision direct injection technology, produces 407hp from 5,500rpm to 6,400rpm; impressive figures that are backed up by an equally stunning 600Nm of torque from 1,750rpm to 4,500rpm. Such breathtaking performance sees the BMW 750i accelerate from zero to 62mph in 5.2 seconds (5.3 seconds for the 750Li) before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Consumption on the combined cycle is 24.8mpg, while CO2 emissions equate to 266g/km.

The all-aluminium V8 engine powering the 750i and 750Li also features its own world first - twin-turbochargers and catalysts that are placed within the V-space of the engine block. This not only optimises packaging but the reduction in manifold length and larger cross sections mean the engine breathes better for enhanced performance. Double-VANOS variable valve technology and high-precision direct injection technology further aid engine performance to the degree that all the innovations combine to offer a V8 engine that has an equivalent output of a traditional 12-cylinder unit.

Aimed at customers who prefer the characteristics of a petrol-powered BMW six-cylinder engine, the BMW 740i and 740Li are also offered. Using an internationally-acclaimed 2,979cc powerplant, the BMW 740i musters 326hp and 450Nm of torque for rapid yet serene performance. The twin-turbocharged engine features high-precision direct injection and Double-VANOS variable valve technology to achieve optimum performance. The car accelerates from zero to 62mph in 5.9 seconds (6.0 seconds for the 740Li) before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The 3.0-litre BMW 740i and 740Li post combined fuel consumption figures of 28.5mpg and 28.2mpg respectively, while returning emissions figures of 232g/km and 235g/km.

All BMW 7 Series models come with a six-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

EfficientDynamics
The launch of the new 7 Series means the entire BMW range now comes equipped with EfficientDynamics technologies as standard. With its roof, doors, bonnet and side panels all made from aluminium to dovetail with the principle of lightweight engineering, the BMW 7 Series also has other innovative class-leading technology which improves engine performance, while cutting fuel consumption and emissions.

Brake Energy Regeneration uses the engine's power on overrun, such as braking, to charge the battery for the car's electrical circuit. When the driver is accelerating the alternator disengages so all of the engine's power is channelled towards the car's performance. Other ancillaries, such as the air-conditioning compressor, are also able to disengage to improve the all round performance of the car. This intelligent use of drivetrain power is why EfficientDynamics technology has helped the 7 Series become a class-leader in terms of performance, fuel consumption and emissions.

World firsts
The BMW 7 Series' drivetrain superiority is reinforced with a plethora of automotive firsts. All 7 Series can now be specified with the world's first car available with a Side View camera system. In addition to Park Distance Control that aids slow speed manoeuvring, the front side view camera system provides another tier of driver awareness. With the touch of a button two forward facing cameras mounted in the front bumper can show an overview of traffic conditions on the iDrive display. This allows the driver to negotiate a partially obscured junction, leave a car park or drive through a narrow gate with absolute confidence.

The new BMW 7 Series can be specified with the world's most advanced Night Vision system in a production car. BMW was the first manufacturer to fit Night Vision to a premium car and it has now upgraded this package to include a pedestrian recognition system in another world first. A control unit analyses video data of human behaviour as part of the Night Vision camera's reach and can subsequently alert the driver if it detects a human is moving into the path of the vehicle.

Building on the impressive list of innovations, the 7 Series is the first BMW to feature Lane Change Warning combined with Lane Departure Warning. The latter is a system that first appeared on BMW 5 and 6 Series models and uses a camera to monitor road markings. Should the driver start to stray out of lane, a gentle vibration of the steering wheel provides an alert. However, courtesy of two radars located at either side of the rear bumper, Lane Change Warning adds another level of driver safety. The sensors constantly scan the blind spot either side of the vehicle, up to a distance of 60 metres, and alert the driver to the presence of another vehicle with a triangular symbol in the door mirror housing.

Cars that are specified with Head-up Display and Lane Departure Warning have the added driver benefit of a speed limit warning system. The camera used as part of the Lane Departure Warning system can now also scan oncoming road signs to alert the driver of any impending speed restriction. The current speed limit is then displayed in the Head-up Display. This is the first time a production car has been offered with a speed warning system that can read road signs.

Completing the host of innovations is speed-related Integral Active Steering. A car specified with this optional equipment allows the rear wheels to turn by up to 3º. At slow speeds it is highly manoeuvrable, while at a faster pace it offers enhanced composure and driving dynamics.

Tailormade driving dynamics
The latest generation BMW 7 Series is the first to have Drive Dynamic Control featuring Variable Damping Control as standard. Drive Dynamic Control is the umbrella function that lets a driver customise the characteristics of his or her car. As part of this Variable Damping Control can bet set in comfort, normal, sport, sport + modes. For the first time though these settings are infinitely variable depending on driving style and road surface condition. The selected mode now alters the throttle response, gear change speed and steering feel.

To aid driving dynamics and comfort the 7 Series is the first BMW Saloon to feature race car-like double-wishbone front suspension. This arrangement allows engineers to fine-tune the suspension for the best kinematic configuration. The rear suspension consists of a five-link arrangement made of aluminium which can be further optimised with the inclusion of Adaptive Air Suspension.

The BMW 7 Series comes as standard with Dynamic Stability Control + featuring additional functions such as Hill-Start Assistant, Brake Drying, Brake Pre-tensioning, Soft-stop and Brake Fade Compensation. Dynamic Traction Control can be activated via a button to enable spirited driving or greater traction of slippery surfaces such as snow and ice.

A new interior
The new BMW 7 Series comes with one of the most luxurious interiors of any premium car. In addition to a new iDrive controller and larger 10.2-inch screen, owners will be able to programme frequently selected radio stations or navigation destinations on favourite buttons located on the centre console. For the first time on a BMW the instrument cluster comprises a high-resolution colour display with Black Panel technology. This new style of display makes for greater character clarity and, when not in use, forms a smooth, homogenous black surface that gives the interior an added level of modern elegance.

The 7 Series is the first BMW to enable a customer to upload their favourite music to be stored on the vehicle courtesy of an 8Gb hard drive. In excess of 100 albums can be saved in this way for the driver's enjoyment. Four-zone automatic air-conditioning is fitted as standard while, for the first time, the 7 Series can have a rear seat ventilation system combined with massage function. The air-conditioning system feeds cool air to the seat squab and backrest, while 12 massage bubbles gently knead the occupants' upper body.

The BMW 7 Series comes with BMW ConnectedDrive. This facility features elements such as a dedicated call centre with a concierge service, automatic fault awareness and BMW Assist, the electronic safety net that automatically dials the emergency services in the event of an accident, free of charge for three years.

The BMW 7 Series goes on sale in the UK on 15 November, 2008. Prices will be announced in due course.

<![CDATA[ 2009 BMW 7-Series Hits Web A Wee Bit Early ]]> After teasing us with the new 2009 BMW 7-series, BMW's finally revealed the new 7 via an early leak of press photos to the web. After throwing everything at us from a flowbee-equipped mule to the teaser at the German golf outing, they've tossed the next 7-series at us in every way possible but with the kitchen sink. Every time, it's been nothing but a tease. Well, except for that purported leaked press shot. But somehow these small press photos have wiggled their way out onto the web and we've managed to snap 'em up.

After a quick glance we can positively say that despite taking it on the chin for the styling on the current 7-series, it seems BMW has only decided to fix one end of the car. The front end finally looks balanced and although bland, it's at least attractive with the headlights from the CS concept we expected it to receive. The tail end? Well, that's been "blessed" with some really odd, droopy tail lights at the corners. Seems they want to make you look at its ass, even if the only thing you'll do is make fun of it.

Also notable is the new 7 will be abandoning the goofy, column mounted shifter in favor of a more traditional console shift, even if it does look weird. The car will also be getting BMW's internet system, no surprise there, with what appears to be back seat individual monitors which we bet will hook up to the net when the car is in motion. While i-Drive remains, it seems button creep is working it's way into the new 7's cockpit, just as it is for other cars in BMW's lineup. Also, we see faux chrome side vents are continuing their onslaught on our senses with the new 7-Series. Look to hear a lot more about the car very shortly.

Oh and by the way, it's now pretty obvious that "purported" leaked shot of the 2009 BMW 7-Series was more like an "actual" leaked shot. [BMW via WCF]

Nope, it's heading over to EBay where apparently the front bumper for the next generation F01 BMW 7-Series has popped up on the auction site and is now going for a not-so-hefty 5 Euros. We've no idea if the seller is yanking our chain, but if they are, the joke's pretty damn funny. Now only if someone could tell us where to find our Flowbee package. <![CDATA[ 2009 BMW 7-Series Testing Artsy Camo ]]> We've seen BMW's 2009 7-series in this sort of trippy camo before, but this time the Bavarians to have toned it down a couple notches. Though we are kind of disappointed this tester isn't equipped with the Flowbee package. Look past the swirly camouflage and you can see the car has a crisper, sharper look compared to the current model. As expected, there appears to be a degree of styling influence from BMW's CS Concept. Of course we'll have to wait for the Paris Auto Show, where this new 7-Series is expected to be revealed, to see how it really looks.

<![CDATA[ 2009 BMW 7-Series Flowbee Package Both Sucks And Cuts ]]> Although readers to the site have long known BMW and Flowbee International were working on a partnership, with these spy photos we can finally show you definitive proof. That's right — the new 2009 BMW 7-series sedan will come with an exclusive optional Flowbee package. Yes, although driving and haircuts at the same time may seem like magic or something out of a dream — it's real and here's proof it's coming soon. No word yet on whether it will include the rumored "underbrush volumizer," "pet comb" or "hair spacer" attachments, but our sources tell us the package will cost just $59.95. Of course that doesn't include shipping and handling. Full spy report from KGP below the jump.

It looks like this BMW 7-series prototype has some plumbing issues. We don't know what to make of this test, which has yards of tubing emanating from the engine and apparently being routed to a collection device in the front seat. It looks like a Bavarian Shop Vac from hell, but we suspect there is something a bit more technologically advanced going on. Sadly, that's the extent of our knowledge on just what's being tested here. It might make for an ideal "Add Your Own Caption" story, however.

<![CDATA[ 2009 BMW 7-Series ]]> 2009_BMW_7.jpgOnly lightly camouflaged compared to prior spy photos of the new BMW 7-Series, this newly-caught 7-Series peeked out during what was allegedly a marketing team photo shoot in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks to the shots from CarPoint.com.au, you can see the new grille looks to have a strong resemblance to the CS Concept from the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show. We've been told the styling of the new big BMW has a totally different feeling than the current E65 model, making the car look visually slimmer and tighter. We'll have to see that to believe it given the current explosion in weight and size of every automaker's new models. Expect the new 7er to be officially unveiled no sooner than the Paris Motor Show this fall. [CarPoint.com.au]

Has some threshold been reached, where such cars are no longer worth maintaining? Here's a handful of photos of an '80 633CSi ($32,825 new, $83,232 in 2007 dollars), an '84 633CSi ($40,705 new, $81,855 in 2007 dollars), and an '89 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL ($72,280 new, $121,789 in 2007 dollars). I must admit that I wondered- briefly- if that big Mercedes V8 would fit in a Crown Victoria's engine compartment.

<![CDATA[ BMW 7 Series Spotted Entering GM's Milford Proving Grounds ]]> Tomorrow at the LA Auto Show we'll be seeing the product of BMW's continued work with GM and the two divorced sides of what was once the German-American hybrid, Daimler and Chrysler — the Hemi Hybrids from Chrysler and GM's full-size GMT-900 hybrid SUV's. BMW's full-size SUV powered by the joint research between all of them knights of Teuton and the 'merican revolution of GM will be coming soon, but not expected to be revealed here in LA. But notice how I used the word "continued" — because an assumption can be made — based upon this here camo-ed up BMW 7-Series entering GM's Milford Proving Grounds — that the Global Hybrid Cooperation (GHC) between these three automakers is still going strong and now it appears they're working on some sedan systems. Full spy report from the sneaky-sneaks at KGP below the jump.

This spy update is a little different than most. It's not so much about WHAT was photographed; it's more about WHERE it was photographed. While trolling the roads around General Motors' Milford (Michigan) Proving Grounds looking for GM prototypes, we were stunned to see a BMW 7-series prototype approaching us—about one mile from GM's track entrance. We pulled over just in time to snap a series of shots as the new 7-series rolled by, followed by a Mini Cooper apparently serving as a chase car. We had to wait about thirty seconds for traffic to clear enough to permit a U-turn to investigate further, and the delay cost another photo of the 7-series actually entering the GM's Proving Ground entrance. As we rolled up to the light outside the track entrance, the big Bimmer was just disappearing from view as it headed deep into GM territory.

It's a strange sight, indeed, to see another manufacturer's still-secret prototype entering another automaker's test facility. The incongruity can only be explained by one thing: the Global Hybrid Cooperation. The GHC is the Hybrid development program being conducted jointly by Mercedes, BMW and General Motors. This new two-mode Hybrid system was first unveiled on GM's GMT900 sport-utility vehicles, but will soon be adapted for use on the Saturn Vue, as well as for use on light-duty passenger cars—like this new 7-series, for example. BMW's development guru, Burkhard Goschel, explained the reason for the cooperative thusly: "The creation of a shared technology platform for hybrid drives will allow us to more quickly integrate the best technologies on the market." Industry sources suggest that the GHC is the most cost-effective, time-efficient method to play catch-up with the likes of Lexus, Toyota, and Honda, that have been focusing on Hybrids much longer.

DaimlerChrysler and BMW representatives were reportedly on hand for the late-April preview of the two-mode Hybrid system on the GMT900 SUVs, and fielded some questions on their participation in this joint Hybrid program. But when it came time to talk specifics about what BMW vehicles would get the two-mode Hybrid system, conversation ceased, and no details would be provided. This 7-series prototype's visit to the GM Proving Grounds appears to have answered that question without the need for any corporate disclosure. GM will be building the Hybrid transmissions systems for Mercedes and BMW at GM's Baltimore transmission plant, which may have necessitated this 7's visit onto GM Territory. Whether development of the 7-series Hybrid is far enough along to be offered at the launch of the rest of the new 7-series' lineup is not known, but it's development is now clearly under way.

<![CDATA[ The LeMons People's Curse Award: Doomed 7-Series ]]> One of the traditions of the 24 Hours of LeMons race is the People's Curse award, in which participants vote for their least favorite car. The "winner" of this vote is then destroyed early in Day Two, and let that be a lesson to jerky drivers and/or cheating teams who spend far over the $500 limit on their cars! At the Altamont LeMons race a couple weeks back, the People's Curse award was bestowed upon this silver '97 BMW 7-series. The story was that the car was abandoned at the Orange County BMW dealership at which Poly Orchid Racing team members were employed, and was thus free. However, much grumbling ensued from members of teams who weren't able to obtain free V8-powered German übermobiles, with the results you see here.

Thing is, this team's drivers weren't jerkolas on the track, and their car wasn't blowing away its hapless competition to the extent one might expect (though it was pretty quick). Still, voice of the people and all.

<![CDATA[ Project Car Hell, V12 BMW Edition: One 850 or Two 750s? ]]> With the Studebaker Weasel beating the bratwurst out of the Faun-Kraka in yesterday's poll, we've got the post-apocalyptic Hell Project thing pretty well sewn up for now. But what do you do if you're banking on the machinery of civilization continuing to grind on for the time being? You need to have a ride with style, so that you may drive it over the crushed bodies of your social inferiors on your journey to worship at the shrine of Mammon. You need a big, flashy BMW. In fact, you need a big flashy BMW with twelve cylinders! We've done V12 Jag Hell; now it's time for V12 BMW Hell!


When you're talking droolworthy German coupes, the conversation generally gets to the BMW 850 in a hurry. It's got the looks, it's got the handling, and- perhaps most important of all- it's got a freakin' huge V12 under the hood. Why, we even have one in today's QOTD! Yes indeed, we all want one... but who's got that kind of cash? Well, maybe you do! Howzabout this '91 850i, currently sitting on eBay with a bid price well below five grand? Too good to be true? Well, it's got some body damage. Actually, it's been bashed into something unyielding with some authority, meaning you'll be spending staggering sums a few bucks on body parts, not to mention the cost of replacing the airbags. But hey, the seller thinks 8-series airbags are "a dime a dozen," so that comes out to less than a penny per airbag! Oh yeah, it comes with a salvage title. And it may or may not run and drive. Come on, though, turn that frown upside down- all you need to do is get Hector's Discount Body Shop to fix the exterior and then spend an afternoon or two fixing all the mechanical stuff in your driveway! How hard can it be?

Some of you, when looking at that 850, may have said to yourselves, "Hey, nice car, but who's got the money for parts?" And you'd have a point. For you, my budget-minded friends, we have this pair of 1991 750iLs, priced to move- or at least limp- at an asking price of a you-gotta-be-shittin'-me $4000. For both cars. Don't groan because you think the 750 is too downscale; after all, didn't Bateman drink his own urine, then grab a stranger and yell "BMW 750iL has the best engine!" in the novel American Psycho? See, that means it's an incredibly desirable object of mainstream consumer lust! Now, some cowardly types are afraid of the engine in these cars; they whine about how one of the two computers that each control half the engine often craps out, making the engine a very heavy six-banger. Then, of course, there's the 47 million engine sensors, which themselves are so ungodly complex that even the Blue Gene would break out in drops of fear-sweat trying to interpret their outputs. But: V12! So, what you get here is a fixer-upper and a parts car, though which is which will be up to you. One of them has a blown head gasket, which, I dunno, might be something of a challenge for your typical backyard mechanic to fix. The other... well, in the seller's own words, it "has some sort of electrical problem, possibly one of the computers. It seems to be stuck on running in economy mode. One of the computers seems to be corroded so that may be the problem." Those gosh darned corroded computers! But hey, a few minutes emery-boarding the chipset pins and you can bet that engine will roar to life!

These shots, taken from the Nurburgring reveal what looks to be a twin turbo V8 engine. How do they know? Well, other than the engine bay shot showing off the two big intercoolers, we're not really sure how. Oh — right, photographic evidence probably would be a pretty good tip-off, wouldn't it?

According to those wacky Spies of all things Auto, BMW's next 7-Series sedan will be incrementally more refined than the current model, with electronics features that don't throw gang signs up on the display monitor instead of working. Not only that, if rumors pan out, the 7 will get a load of new tech including four cameras linked to algorithms that control all manner of assistance functions, including parking, backup. around-corner vision, lane-departure warning and pedestrian upskirt shots (you stopped listening, didn't you?). AS's sources say the 7 will also get virtual gauges projected on a plasma screen. Oh the engine? How about 700 hp via the company's new twin-turbo kit. All that and a less flame-surfaced body style? Someone get us a spoon.

Sultans lamenting the lack of BMW M7 action, whip out your AMEX Centurion cards. Bavarian tuning shop and BMW partner Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen (just Alpina, thanks) will show its B7 sedan at the Chicago show next week. It'll be the US debut for the tuner 7-Series, which has been massaged up to 500 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, via supercharging. That means unlike the M5, the B7 is a lowdown torque monster, peaking at at 4,250 rpm (compared to the V10's 383 lb-ft at 6,100 rpm). It also gets a sport-tuned suspension with active roll stabilization, signature 20-spoke wheels and a functional aero kit. A single low, low payment of $115,695 will get you one of the 200 B7s set to be produced this year.

The 2007 BMW ALPINA B7 brings together the luxury, pioneering design, and advanced technology of the 7 Series Sedan with the scintillating performance of a supercharged, 500 horsepower V-8 engine.

To power the BMW ALPINA B7, ALPINA specially developed a higher-performance version of BMW's 4.4-liter, 90-degree V-8 engine and mated it to a 6-speed automatic transmission featuring steering wheel mounted shift controls. The motor produces 500 horsepower at 5,500 rpm along with maximum torque of 516 lbs.-ft. at 4,250 rpm, and propels the B7 from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.8 seconds. ALPINA 21-inch wheels carry Z-rated performance tires, while the sport-tuned suspension includes Active Roll Stabilization. The B7 aerokit includes a rear spoiler to improve stability, handling, and performance at high speeds.

With this new model, BMW will raise the benchmark for the segment in terms of performance, refinement, technology, and luxury. Approximately 200 US-version cars are planned for the 2007 model year. The BMW ALPINA B7 has a manufacturers suggested retail price of $115,695.

Word on the street is the next BMW 7-Series will look less like something out of Chris Bangle's scribble diary, and more elegantly understated. Does that mean flame surfacing is growing up, and leaving behind all of its adolescent pretense? It's still hard to tell, considering the latest test prototype spotted is covered in something that looks like Lumpy Lumperson in a wet suit. Anyway, this is likely a late-cycle refresh, not a major redesign. But according to The Car Connection, the most noticeable new segment may be the 6-Series grille. For good or ill.

BMW's 12-cylinder Hydrogen 7 isn't exactly the ultimate driving machine, considering it takes nearly 10 seconds to get from zero to 60 mph (laugh it up, Volkswagen Rabbit). But that's only a small concern, considering this 7's only true competitor is an airport shuttle bus built by Ford. The BMW (and Ford's shuttle) are the first vehicles on the road built to run on liquid hydrogen, whose combustion in a traditional V8 emits only water vapor and nitrous oxide, with a side of carbon dioxide. Wired News tested the Hydrogen 7 in Germany, and relays the details. The economies of usage don't exactly jibe; currently, it costs far more to drive the same mile in the Hydrogen 7 as it does in its dino-juiced counterpart, mainly due to the high price of hydrogen fuel at the retail level. Plus, the process of extracting hydrogen from natural gas produces more C02 emissions than the car. But particulars aside, it's interesting to see carmakers pursue hydrogen combustion, which may wind up proving how the "hydrogen economy" will be impossible without a corresponding resurgence in nuclear energy. Maybe that's their intent.

According to the UK's CAR, BMW's next 7-Series — expected in mid to late 2008 — will be sleeker, more coupe-like and more compactly comported — a departure from the current model's Bangleized pulchritude. Underneath, there's BMW's new, modular architecture, with which it will mix and match parts to create the 5-Series, 6-Series and new, lower-priced Rolls-Royce sedan line. There will also be a hybrid model, sporting the gas-electric powerplant BMW's been developing with odd bedfellows DaimlerChrysler and GM, along with diesels and a range of next-gen direct-injection gas engines. The guys from Winding Road, who just so happen to be sitting next to us in the Paris Turkish prison auto show press tomb room, say Rolls-Royce has confirmed it's building a line of sedans slotted just below the Phantom, in the $230,000 to $330,000 range. Word is, the new models — to be launched within four years — will be close in size to the 101EX, and share a few parts with parent BMW's 7-series. That price point keeps the model ahead of potential rival Bentley, but still well below Boeing's "On the Wings of Imagination" Rose Parade float.

Who knew the problems a Pope can cause to two of the biggest and baddest Bavarian auto companies. Both BMW and Audi have been bickering like two catholic school kids over which automaker has the right to supply the official car for the six-day visit by Pope Benedict XVI. But after weeks of back-and-forth, folks over at the AFP claim the solution to the impasse came by a combination of divine and bureaucratic intervention — with the Munich Archbishop's office finally being forced to step in and make the final decision...

...the Pope would be driven in a BMW 7-series in Munich, and driven in an Audi A8 while on a three-day stay in Regensburg. But even divine providence couldn't stop these two big Germans from trying for one last piece of one-upsmanship, with BMW's spokesperson declaring:

"It was important to us that we provided the car he used first on his visit...after all, when the Pope is in Munich, he should be driven in a BMW."

Audi's spokesperson on the other hand provided a bit less biting of a retort:

"Audi is satisfied with this compromise because at the end of the day, it is all about the visibility of the product. Plus, we saw BMW making out with Jimmy in the back of the school bus so BMW's a whore and it knows it."

Kids...can't live with them and it's against the law to shoot them. But really, it's days like this we wish he still just drove around in the Pope-mobile. And anyway Volvo won the contract on his new whip so they're just better than you both. Nyah-nyah!

<![CDATA[ Burning the Midnight Liquid Fuel: BMW Reveals Hydrogen 7 ]]>

BMW today revealed its Hydrogen 7, the alternative-fuel model and outgrowth of the company's CleanEnergy project that was recently spotted (and photographed) amid road testing. As expected, it's a flex-fuel configuration, with modified version of the corporate 6.0-liter V12 that can swich from gasoline to liquid hydrogen fuel (liquid, cryogenic hydrogen, the company says, offers much higher energy density than the gaseous stuff).

According to BMW, the hydrogen-combustion powerplant spews virtually no harmful emissions and CO2 into the air, though only produces 256 horsepower (compared to 438 hp for the 760i) and goes from zero to 60 in 9.5 seconds (the same as the Fiat Panda). Plus, in hydrogen mode, the operating range is only 200 km (or 124 miles), so it would be entirely impractical were it not for the gasoline tank swich-on. Clearly this car's an early entrant in an as-yet-unproven genre, and while BMW's unclear about how the car will be marketed, is says the launch is directed to "the network partners involved in politics, science and the energy industry" as well as "an open-minded clientele highly sensitive to trendsetting innovations in the world of mobility." Good luck to the newbie car salesman stuck with that in his inbox.

Earlier this year, BMW execs said the company's first hydrogen-fueled vehicles were two years away. Of course, they weren't talking fuel cells, they meant hydrogen used in an internal combustion manner — with the hydro tanks fitted alongside traditional gasoline tanks in a flex-fuel setup. Now, AutoExpress has published some shots of a 7-Series thought to be a production version of the CleanEnergy concept undergoing testing in Germany. Considering the company has only a year-and-a-half to meet its deadline, it should definitely be at least this far along.

G-POWER claims to be the first BMW tuner to offer a supercharger kit for BMWs with Valvetronic engines, and a quick Google search failed to prove them wrong (what say you Bimmerheads?). Regardless, the German company says its 5.2K kit will boost horsepower of the 750i V8 from 360 to 550, and torque from 360 ft.-lbs to 590 ft.-lbs, reducing zero-to-60 times to 5.5 seconds. The company claims the modified Banglemobile's top speed (with the nanny disconnected, natch) is 193 mph. Big brakes, an appearance package and other sundry trinkets are also available for misuse.

As Edmunds Inside Line reports, the next BMW 7-Series could be smaller, sportier and less ungainly (or more gainly, if you prefer). The redesign, coming for 2008 (check the possibly official BMW product product timeline for details) will get a major re-sculpting, a more traditionally located shift lever and a "more intuitive" iDrive — all seeming to address critics' jabs individually (a hybrid version is also reportedly planned). Word is the current 7-Series will morph into the new, lower-priced executive Rolls-Royce expected to come in under $200,000.

From the looks of the digital predictions, the new flagship will get some aggressive new lines forward of the A-pillars, a less-pronounced bubble butt, and an ethereal AutoBild logo that hovers over the driver's side window. Man, that's almost as annoying as Chris Bangle's flame-surfacing. As a consolation prize, the top-line model will reportedly get Bimmer's slick new, 500hp V10, just like the M5 and M6.

Why you shouldn t buy this car: If you grew up with Pong rather than Playstation, BMW s flagship luxobarge is not for you. You won t be able to manipulate the iDrive mouse controller without consulting your children — who should stay in their damn seats and not try to prove that they re smarter than you. The sedan s also not much of a looker. You d be forgiven for kicking her out of bed for eating crackers. No surprise, then, that the 7 s image is a bit tarnished these days — although the model s cliff-face depreciation is par for the course.

Why you should buy this car: If you like to drive fast, and like to drive big, the new, more highly-horsed 7-Series is a phenomenal way to scoot from point A to point B with plenty of leather-lined elbow-room.

(Quite why BMW restricts the natural born autobahn bomber to 150mph is a mystery lost in the mists of 70 s-era environmentalism.) It s the safe and relaxing way to lose your license.

Exterior Design: ***
First it s conservative, then it s flame-surfaced, then it s conservative with a bit of blingery — this car s design has been through the wringer. Although the new 7 s stance is much improved, and no one misses that bootylicious butt, the car s basic proportions look a bit goofy. Not a classic.

Braking: *****
Thanks to XXXL vacuum-assisted ventilated discs, Bimmer s portly sedan sheds speed like a Labrador losing fur. Stopping is simply not an issue; in fact, it s an opportunity to accel.

Ride: ****
All credit to the Bavarians chassis gurus for finding a way to combine more-than-merely adequate road feel with splendid isolation, without resorting to air suspension.

Handling: *****
Even when cornered at high velocity over a broken surface with severe undulations and metal expansion joints, the 750i (Sport Package) maintained composure— albeit with the traction control flashing slow down in Morse code. Yes, it s a barge, but as far as barges go, this one goes there just about as fast as you could want.

Gearbox: *
A huge disappointment. In Drive, the six-speed slushbox lacks the finesse needed for imperious wafting. In Sport, it s too manic. (It even went nuts once, rabbit-hopping down the road like I was a marijuana-infused learner driver mistreating a stick shift Ford Pinto.) The wheel-mounted button-shifters work a treat, but a 7 isn t a Ferrari is it?

Audio/Video: *
Don t get me started. iDrive is the worst thing to happen to BMW since the allies bombed their airplane engine factories.

Toys: ****
Everything you could possible imagine, from Bluetooth connectivity [finally!] with a neat little slide-out keypad, to voice recognition, to side and rear window shades that rides and fall at the push of a button, to cooling breezes for your butt. Only iDrive control (or lack thereof) loses that final star.

As you d expect there s plenty of room for a foursome— and their golf clubs. The rear lid swings open at key fob command, but where s the one-touch closing mechanism?

Look past the 7 s questionable styling, death-by-frippery complexity, hyperactive gearbox and iDrive insanity, and you re left with a super-swift sedan that can rocket down highways and byways with total confidence and mindless ease. Is that a good thing? Hell yes.

When BMW designer Chris Bangle first unleashed his version of venerable 7-Series in 02, the oddly angular flame-surfacing inflicted upon the plutocrats pride and joy was roundly criticized for not being round enough. At the same time, the overly-complex iDrive mouse controller iDrove customers nuts. Although Bimmer s brand cachet helped maintain the 7-Series showroom momentum, the new, refreshed 7-Series was designed to right those wrongs and restore the natural order.

And so the 750 s sheet metal has returned to slab-sided safety. Gone too are the peculiar Dame Edna wraparound headlights and the gi-normous, protruding bustle butt. Otherwise, Bangle s art school influence has been replaced by, of all things, blingery. Xzibit A, B and C: the larger kidney grill at the front, the re-contoured hood and the tucked-in rear bumper at the back (designed to show off the 7 s wider rear track and its wikkid new seven-spokes). The overall effect is a bit schizo: Bad Boyz meets Bavarian burghers.

While the 7 s looks are a noticeable improvement (which would be further improved by presidential window tinting), the iDrive debacle continues unabated. BMW s boffins have de-contented and simplified the software, but the basics are still far from basic. When you have to pull over to find a way to tune-in your favorite AM radio station, you know you ve been stranded deep in RTFM territory. The little adhesive sticker next to the [now leather topped] iDrive controller remains, pointing the way towards the HVAC screen. It s the ultimate ergonomic indictment.

Fortunately, the 750 is still the ultimate driving machine — for people who like to drive big comfy cars like they stole them. The 7 s six-speed autobox isn t terribly good at wafting; the acceleration provided by the 360hp V8 increases arithmetically. WooooOOOOSH! In sport mode, forward progress is even more manic. Button shifting is the best way to keep things smooth and reliable, but who can be bothered? Best to just set the radar detector for stun and go with the flow — or is that torrent? As always, the 7 (with the optional, $3,200 Sports Package) has the handling chops to cope with high-class hooliganism.

What s needed here is for BMW to recognize what the Hell it s supposed to be and build a Club Sport 7-Series. Lower the suspension, fatten-up the wheels, slot in a six-speed manual, lose the iDrive, ditch the sound deadening, amp-up the exhaust and away we go. Did I hear someone say M7? Yes please. Meanwhile, if you re looking for a thrashable luxury car, well, you could do worse, and it s hard to know where you could do better— at least until the new Mercedes S500 hits the scene. Beginning later this year, BMW will offer a thermal imaging system on its 7 Series that will allow drivers to see living beings (and hot-dog trucks open for business) on an LCD screen, long before they come into view unassisted. Known as BMW Night Vision, the system works in the same way some military-issue night-vision goggles detect heat sources and register them as light, using Far Infrared (FIR) technology. Objects that are directly in front will register brighter than objects to the sides, in an area of up to 300 meters ahead of the vehicle. The system will be available in 7 Series models in fourth quarter 2005.
