2009 Ford Focus RS: Body By Photoshop?

As Americans, one of our favorite pastimes is complaining about all the cool Ford products the rest of the world gets that we don't. So, ever since rumors started swirling of a Euro-market Ford Focus RS that would be even hotter than the Focus ST, we've been waiting in anticipation to see the forbidden fruit. Suddenly these images have surfaced online, looking quite promising. More »

2008 Mazdaspeed3, Part Three

Why you should buy the 2008 Mazdaspeed3:
You want a fast car, but have to pick up your children from school. You want a WRX STI, but can't quite afford the running costs and you don't need the AWD anyways. You got a bunch of tickets a few years ago; you still like driving fast, but want to preserve what little credibility is left of your driving record. You've seen the light, and understand that hot hatches are the most practical, best value all-round vehicles for an enthusiast, but you think the WRX is too soft, the GTI needs more power, the Caliber SRT-4 is too loud, and the other 3-doors are too small.

Why you shouldn't buy this car:
You need a dope ride to pick up some shorties. You think "Tokyo Drift" was the most awesome racing movie ever. You don't consider chrome racing rims to be oxymoronic. You want a roof scoop on your car, but have no idea what they're for. When someone says, "driving dynamics," you think they're talking about a tuning company. You like hatchbacks because they have more room in the back for a system.

$500,000 Range Stormer Replica For Sale, Perfect For When You Ain't Found Shit In The Desert

Range Rover Sport too dull for you? Too many doors? Not in line with your posh Dubai lifestyle? Need something to comb the desert in? Good news friend, West Coast Customs Dubai is reproducing the Range Stormer concept in street legal form. Better news is there's one on sale at Alwan's used cars for a cool $500,000. It seems a member of the Dubai royal family thought the concept was so fly he had West Coast Customs US build him one out of a regular old boring Range Rover Sport. WCC decided maybe there'd be a few more so why not task the Dubai branch to make a couple more. Head down to crazy Al's if you can't live without a two door Stormer of your own.

2008 Mazdaspeed3, Part Two

Exterior Design: ***
The 2008 Mazdaspeed3 doesn't visually distinguish itself much from the standard Mazda 3 hatchback, but it doesn't need to. The basic design's thick D-pillars, subtle shoulder bulges over the wheels, and angular lines are a good starting point. More important is how the car doesn't look. There are no scoops, fins, stripes, or stickers exclaiming the car's performance. The slightly larger rear spoiler, which we suppose is theoretically functional, looks just like the spoiler on the standard car. The wheels look boring. Even the intercooler is hidden away, breathing through the normal-looking grille.

Interior Design: ***
For some reason, there are more Mazdaspeed logos inside the car than there are outside. But besides some extra red trim and stitching, it's again much like the standard 3. You have plenty of room for a few of your friends and their stuff to come along, though there's not much extra room for the driver's knees. Aside from that, everything is quite comfortable, despite being over-styled in the manner of an athletic shoe.

2008 Mazdaspeed3, Part One

Cruising the affluent suburban streets of the Chicago area in the 2008 Mazdaspeed3, I'm looking for trouble. The dimming evening light and warm weather has brought out all the usual suspects: everyone from boy-racers in tuned Hondas to middle-aged men in Ford GTs. Chirping the tires as I dart from stoplight to stoplight, I feel like a 17-year-old taking a joyride in his dad's sports car. But I'm not racing anyone — yet. I'm just trying to get the attention of someone else who wants to run me. It's usually not something I do, but with 263 HP under my right foot, and a 6-speed gearbox in my right hand, I'm in a juvenile mood. Chasing down a previous-generation Subaru WRX that's sporting some aftermarket wheels and a loud exhaust, I feel like I might be biting off just a bit more than I can chew.

Convertible Prius Aims For Economy And Style, Misses

Though we found the Cadillac CTS Convertible to be rather fetching, it didn't stand up to some of the four-door convertibles our industrious commentariat located. That being said, we're a little disappointed none of you found this Prius by NCE, which is both a hybrid and a four-door convertible. We're curious to see what kind of fuel economy this things get, as convertibles tend to ruin the carefully crafted, low-resistance shells of other cars.

1982 AMC Eagle, Claimed Rust Free

Like the Minotaur or the Griffin, the idea of a rust free AMC Eagle is one of legend, impossibility, sillyness even. Though these tanks posing as cars were the forerunners to todays crossover, and sported big AMC I6's, all-wheel-drive, and seriously crazy ride characteristics, they were not known for their corrosion resistance. So how is this pristine, Cincinnati-area 1982 Eagle two door dressed in a fine shade of 80's brown in such good condition? Well it's been stored in a barn for the last 16 years, that's how. More »

2009 Audi A1 5 Door On Cover of AutoBild?

We're always suspicious of the covers from Autobild, they're like the National Enquirer of the German automotive press. Regardless, they've got what is claimed to be the 2009 Audi A1 on the cover and it's sporting the familiar gaping maw grille and yet even more aggressive headlights. Audi, maybe we should talk, we feel you may have anger issues, your cars used to be so nice and clean, everybody was happy (except BMW). Now, with this tasty sport hatch, you're just being mean, tempting us with forbidden fruits. [GermanCarBlog]

German Scientists Crack Remote Code, Cars And Garages Vulnerable To Blitzkrieg

Ever wonder how all the remote openers in the world don't set each other off on a regular basis? It all has to do with the mysterious KeeLoq security system, made by Microchip Technology. The system is used by quite a few automakers in their remote keyfobs and in garage door openers to keep things secure. Well, the rascally Germans at Ruhr University decided to figure out how it works, and along the way they developed a way to duplicate those codes. Whoops. When reached for comment, MT relied on a canned statement saying "These theoretical attacks are not unique to the KeeLoq system and could be applied to virtually any security system." Hopefully you've got backup locks for your stuff. [SundayHerald]

2008 BMW M3, Part Three

Why you should buy this car:
You like power, speed and reliability all wrapped up in a compact, five-seat package. You accept no imitations. You like driving. You loved your Porsche 911, but need room for baby seats. You don't need to brag.

Why you shouldn't buy this car:
You're likely to ask "What do you mean it doesn't come in 'P***Y Magnet' Yellow?" You think girls are impressed by the size of your wing. You think the internal combustion engine is evil and loathe it in all of its forms, but especially the finest. You're a believer in that whole 'Speed Kills' thing.

2008 BMW M3, Part Two

Exterior Design: ***
The 2008 BMW M3 sedan, depending on whom you ask, is either ugly or boring. We think it's a bit of both. But, packing supercar performance into a compact package that won't turn heads is definitely a positive thing. If anything, the M3 isn't subtle enough, we'd take ours — and boy how we'd take one — sans bumps and bulges. We'll add a star for any buyer savvy enough to order theirs with the badge delete option checked.

Interior Design: ****
One part subtle mixed with one part tacky, the 2008 is classic M3. Any car that combines classic BMW-type faces and design language with both red and blue stitching is a winner in our book. We'd specify either black or white for the leather, but the as-tested red is certainly, umm, eye catching. As with any BMW, the controls are precisely where your hands or feet expect to find them, making this interior work better than it looks.

2008 BMW M3, Part One

The 2008 BMW M3 puts the world around it in fast forward. No, this isn't some function hidden deep within the still befuddling iDrive or a secret performance setting achieved by hitting B, A, B, A, Select, Start; just an inherent ability to twist the world over its power dome and past its windscreen at a nearly impossible speed. Neither is this the kind of garden-variety performance achieved by the average big engine, small car formula. Remember how cheesy '80s action shows would speed up the tape during chase scenes? The resultant mix of unbelievably flat cornering and inexplicably rapid oncoming traffic just ended up being unbelievable and inexplicable. But not in this new M3.

2009 Nissan Maxima, Teased

We've already seen the first spy photos of the 2009 Nissan Maxima as it played in the snow last month, and of course we'll be seeing the official reveal of the new 4DSC or "4-Door Sports Car" from Nissan this week at the New York Auto Show. That's not stopping the PR team from pushing the new Maxima with a tiny load of teaser shots of everyone's favorite "sporty" mid-size sedan. Enjoy the strip-tease — and remember to head back here on Wednesday to see the full reveal of the new Maxima.

1955 Chrysler 2 Door Hard Top Wagon

Next up in the 2008 Detroit Autorama Great 8 parade is this very vibrant, very slick 1955 Chrysler 2 Door Hard Top Wagon. Even though the car looks like it was designed this way, a ton of heavy duty work went into this one. The car has been shortened 8", chopped 2", the windshield laid by by 15 degrees, the dash was hand formed out of steel, custom floor pans throughout, custom wood deck in the back, and on and on. The motivation comes courtesy of a Hemi with a one off Hillborn injection system and power is delivered to a set of 24" Foose wheels out back.

Ford Fiesta 3 and 5 Door Live And In Color, Retina-Searing Color

Lord almighty these cars are bright in person. Ford went ahead and dropped the real deal Ford Fiesta on us and they went out of their way to slather then in colors the Joker would be very proud of. We're pretty excited by the idea of a compact Ford in the market again, though we don't have confirmation yet on the 5 door coming stateside yet. One thing the original (good) Focus was never faulted for was its handling, and it's something Ford has figured out which we're hoping transfers to a potentially more flickable car.

It's A Hatch, It's A Trunk, It's The Skoda Twindoor System

The 2009 Skoda Superb was already our favorite version of the VW Passat when the company released images of it earlier this year. Since then we've been waiting for pictures of the new Twindoor system, which promised the styling of a sedan with the usability of a hatchback. We were dubious until we saw the pictures. The Twindoor tailgate splits below the window, allowing normal trunk action or full-on hatchback accessibility.

2009 Mazda2 Three Door, Along With a Variety of Colors

The Mazda booth here at Geneva feels like a Mazda2 party and a whole bunch of colors were invited. Red, green, yellow, blue, white, gray... so in case you're in the market, that special color is probably here. The Mazda2 three door is is freshly unveiled for the European market here, and we're feelin' the little car. It may be a little awkward in pictures, but it has a Fiat 500 meetings Mazda6 feel to it that we like. The interior feels pretty well put together, even if the seat cloth could make a circus tumbler queesy. Now, about that Mazdaspeed version.

Is Nissan Considering A GT-R Sedan For Infiniti?

The lads over at Motor Trend have it that Nissan is "studying the possibility" of a four-door GT-R for the Infiniti brand. This reminds us of the time Laura Berkalter was "studying the possibility" of going out with us. While it didn't work it out with Laura, this is a rumor that might have legs. The sedan could carry over a lot of the components from the current GT-R, such as the twin-turbo V6, AWD setup and transmission. As the price could easily be in excess of $80,0000, making it an Infiniti is the only easy way to avoid the Phaeton syndrome. More »
