Emerson Fittipaldi To Pace 2008 Detroit Grand Prix in E85 Corvette Z06

At today's NextCruise announcement, automakers dragged out their leanest, meanest, greenest vehicles as a backdrop for the action. Of course, the fact that they were all SUVs was a bit ironic. But also on hand was a hot Corvette Z06 modified for Detroit Grand Prix pace duty and sipping E85 fuel. While no announcement was made, racing legend Emerson Fittipaldi's name is planted smack-dab on the driver's side B-pillar, making it pretty clear who's going to be at the helm during the 2008 Detroit Grand Prix.

First 2009 Corvette ZR1 Rolls Off Assembly Line To Thunderous Media Silence

The much-anticipated 2009 Corvette ZR1 began production, as the first unit finished the assembly process and was delivered to Chevy dealer Dave Ressler during a press event in Bowling Green on Monday. What, you didn't notice? Well, it seems the build coincided with the unveiling of the new Chevy Camaro, forcing the ZR1 news under the radar. Guess those promotions budget cuts only allow one high-profile unveiling per week, eh? More »

Corvette May Be Readying Great Leap Forward, Heading To China

This jet black Corvette was spotted outside China's National Department for Automobile Quality, the agency in charge of awarding sales licenses to automakers. Our guess is this can only mean one thing — GM is planning to sell its golden child in China. The only problem is "Chevy" in China is like "Daewoo" in the US, a purveyor of bargain basement appliances. No problem! GM will just do with the 'Vette what it's done elsewhere across the globe — sell the Corvette as a stand-alone brand. Then you don't need to worry about your high horsepower mixing with your 'merican Revolution. Frankly, China's had enough of those as it is. [ChinaCarTimes]

Up-Close Photos Of Mystery Corvette Concept From New Transformers Movie

We've seen the mystery Corvette concept (who some dare to believe may be named "Hot Rod") from the upcoming Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie three times already. The first photo was a blurry camera phone shot from far away. The second shot was of the folks at Saleen busily painting the new movie star up and making him all silvery-looking. The third shot showed the mystery Transformers Corvette concept and a buddy about to be loaded up to roll out. Now, thanks to an e-mail tipster, we have the fourth and fifth shots as it gets close enough to the camera to see the "GM Design" logo on the rear end. Is it a prototype for a "C7" Corvette? Is it some hot Rodimus action? We guess we'll have to wait and see. (Hat tip to Anonimus Prime!)

Mosler MT900 Red Devil Dynos At 1635 HP, Says, "I Don't Need No LS9"

1,635 HP sounds like an awful lot, but when it comes to the Mosler MT900S Red Devil, it's not even the whole story. Its owner, Mike Vietro, called off the dyno run at a measly 5,600 RPM with power still climbing 70 HP every 100 RPM. Corvette Mike estimates he could have seen as much as 1,800 HP had he let the test continue up to 6,200 RPM. So how does his LS7-powered supercar do it?

Video From Yesterday's Corvette ZR1 Long-Lead Drive Seeps Out, Shows Magazines "Driving" Blue Devil

We'd heard the long-lead media "drive" for the 2009 Corvette ZR1 was yesterday and it looks like the first in-car driving footage is now out on the web, less than 24 hours later. We obviously weren't there, primarily since we'd heard it was all magazines there. Frankly, we just don't need as much time as the glossies to put out a good story. We don't have character blocks to set in the printing press, no ink to squirt out and no parchment to unroll. So we guess it makes sense that we wouldn't need an invite to an event this far out. Of course, we also expected the invited media reps from the big n' bad buff books would, you know, drive the cars themselves. UPDATE: The video's from Motive Mag, an online publication. Who knew they needed extra time too? Slow pokes. More »

Building The 638 HP LS9 Corvette ZR1 Engine

Ever wonder what the hand-assembly of an LS9 — the 638 HP supercharged heart of the 2009 Corvette ZR1 — actually looks like? Well, the guys over at Automobile actually got to lend a hand in bolting one together. So, let's all take a moment to forget all about Nurburgring lap times and dealer mark-ups to sit back and watch GM do what GM perhaps does best: build a big ol' thumpin' V8. Video after the jump. Mystery Corvette Concept From Transformers 2 Movie Gets New Beauty Shots, Multiplies!

Remember that mystery Corvette concept we saw last month getting painted by the folks at Saleen for the new Transformers movie, Revenge of the Fallen? We've got new pictures of it today thanks to our friends over at the Don Murphy board by way of Seibertron. These new shots show not only the Corvette concept in all its silver-skinned beauty, but also show off the entire Autobot team, just sitting around and lounging about in the sun. There's the Beat and Trax, and Optimus and Ironhide and...man, we wish we had a job like that. But wait, is that another one behind it? What's going on? Anyone out there have any more details?

Corvette Set Ablaze By Fireworks, Project Car Hell Comes To Life

Rich Szatkowski really loved his 1989 Corvette project car. So much so, he spent the entire 4th of July reupholstering the interior and fitting it with a new steering wheel and stereo. As a final touch, he washed the carpet and left a roof panel off so it could dry overnight. Then disaster struck. While the 'Vette was parked in his driveway a stray firework landed inside it, setting the car ablaze. As you can see in the pictures, it was a total loss.

They're also working on offering a kit for the Lexus IS-F, set to include headers and a modified exhaust system to squeeze more oopmh from the eight-geared oddity. Video Proof Of The 2009 Corvette ZR1s 7:26.4 Nurburgring Lap

We've been eagerly waiting for this since we first heard the news of the stunning 7:26.4 Nurburgring lap time set by the 2009 Corvette ZR1. Now, we've finally got the footage of the Godzilla-killer in action, ripping up the Nordschleife. But will this silence the skeptics? Either way, the Nissan GT-R had better have something fast in store with the 2010 Nissan GT-R Spec V. But enough talk, let's sit back and enjoy the show. Video below the jump. More »

Garage 419 Debates ZR1 Vs. GT-R, Nurburgring Times Faked?

In the wake of the 2009 Corvette ZR1's record lap of the Nurburgring, some people are arguing whether the claims made manufacturers are legit. Matt Farah over at Garage419 has sources who claim the tires may have been shaved for more grip. But how much do Nurburgring lap times really matter? If you were choosing between a ZR1 and a GT-R, would you care about 'Ring times? These questions and more, as Matt and cross-continental racer Alex Roy debate the hot topics on Garage419. Top Ten American Automotive Pilgrimages

It wouldn't be a Jalopnik Automotive Amerigasm without a nod to the places that make American automotive history so great. Eddie Izzard may joke that he's from "Europe, where the history comes from," but the relative young age of the auto industry means our automotive history is as old and rich as anyone's...and of course, more American. Whether you have plans for the Fourth of July weekend or not, there's no better way to celebrate our country's freedom than by enjoying the freedom to drive somewhere and overspend at the gift shop. Below is our list of ten great American automotive pilgrimages for those that worship at the altar of wheeled transportation. More »

Corvette S-Limited: When Did Pep Boys Turn Japanese?

For the very special price of $75,329 (¥7,980,000) GM's willing to give you what they're calling the Chevrolet Corvette S-Limited. Sure, it looks a lot like a regular 'Vette, but it's spec'd out with mesh inserts, a set of special wheels, a lip spoiler and with only 30 of them being offered (15 in black, 15 in white), it sounds like a sure winner to us. Heck, we're about to hop a flight over to Japan so we can get one right this instant. Can you tell how super awesome excited we are for the chance to buy a limited edition of the number one best super car from America? Well, that could be because we're actually not at all excited at the prospect of purchasing a special edition Corvette that looks like the only thing special about it is it's been given the Pep Boy "#4" kit.
