Hmm. Avenger or Beetle. Avenger or Beetle. Beetle or Avenger.

    Tough choice.

    Nah. It's not.

The A-10 is the Kalashnikov of the
air. From an Air Force web site

The aircraft can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high explosive projectiles up to 23mm. Their self-sealing fuel cells are protected by internal and external foam. Manual systems back up their redundant hydraulic flight-control systems. This permits pilots to fly and land when hydraulic power is lost.

The Thunderbolt II can be serviced and operated from bases with limited facilities near battle areas. Many of the aircraft's parts are interchangeable left and right, including the engines, main landing gear and vertical stabilizers.

@donner_froh: Take a look at some of the Warthogs that come back from missions... half of the control surfaces are gone and the pilots are like "It did feel kinda sluggish..."

Personally, I consider it an American child of the Sturmovik:

Thanks for posting that clip. That is truly a burp gun writ large.

It was a sad day when the halted the manufacture of those planes. We need more, ok, maybe not we, but I want one... heh heh...

Now I know what the gun is doing next to the Beetle. It is explaining how to play "The Most Dangerous Game." After it finishes going over the rules, it will give it a twenty minute head start. Then the hunting will begin.

It's next to a Beetle because it's located on a lawn in Murilee's neighborhood of Alameda; you know, land of retired Naval officers...

To quote from a recent article:

"So what the heck is it doing next to a Type 1 Beetle?"

I guess we'll find out right after we find out which car Wert drove to his high school reunion...

The story I remember is that the gun was manufactured then the plane was built around it. Nice gun. Chuck Norris would carry two if he needed a gun...

@JDisnidiet: I remember that story as well, I know the main gear on those A-10s is moved to the side to accommodate the guns long barrels. I'm not sure what else was specifically made to get the gun to fit.

@78_elky: Try the entire airframe. Those bigass engines mounted on the fuselage, rearward and up high, is to keep the thrust close to the axis to minimize yaw effects if one is taken out, and more importantly, to keep the engines from choking on the gun's exhaust.

@Plecostomus - A monument to failure: I imagine it's just there for scale. Either that, or they're planning on removing the front and rear windshields, poking the barrel through, and making it look a lot friendlier from certain angles.

Mount it on the damn beetle and then we'll talk. It could drive backwards with that amount of thrust.
