The interesting part is it's packing ExxonMobil technology.

The Maya 300 is the result of collaboration between Maya, battery supplier Electrovaya, and technology backer ExxonMobil and is currently heading for fleet sales and possibly an urban car sharing scheme in Baltimore, Maryland. Its Electrovaya lithium ion batteries utilize ExxonMobil's co-extruded separator film to pack energy into the smallest possible size yielding a 12 kWh battery with a 60 mile range or a 27 kWh battery good for 120 miles. The car is motivated via a 15 kW permanent magnet motor (that's a stampede of 20 HP to the rest of us). Recharge times are 6-8 hours on 110V and half that at 220V.

The car is currently certified by the DOT for low speed use, thus the artificial 30 MPH speed limit, but engineers are confident it will meet all federal regulations for freeway capable vehicles as it's equipped with an all-steel body, safety cage and air bags. The intention is to have a Federalized car available to the public for around $20-25,000 in 2011. It's currently making the rounds at the Maryland Science Center, which will be launching their localized ride share and electric car rental program on August 1st, but you can get a ride between now and then with the purchase of a museum ticket.

ZERO VEHICLE EMISSIONS, ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLE NOW COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE

Baltimore leads nation with all-electric car program

Baltimore, MD – June 23, 2009 – Baltimore today became one of the nation's first cities to feature an electric car share and rental program using advanced lithium ion battery technology developed by ExxonMobil. The Maryland Science Center with sponsors Electrovaya and ExxonMobil announced the program, called Altcar, which will raise awareness among Baltimore residents and visitors of the future of energy efficient transportation.

The Maryland Science Center also opened a new energy efficiency exhibit, sponsored by ExxonMobil, which includes hands-on activities for children and a full-scale car that showcases the numerous energy saving technologies currently being used by the auto industry.

"The Maryland Science Center is proud to play a central role in today's historic announcement. The launch of this program fits perfectly with our mission to educate the public on scientific advancement," said Van Reiner, CEO of the science center. "Consumers have shown a demand for car sharing programs around the U.S., and it is a logical next step to utilize this business model to demonstrate the growing desire and need for energy efficient transportation that is key to addressing environmental concerns. The new exhibit also will be crucial to helping expand the knowledge of our visitors on this critical and important topic."

The electric car being used in the science center's Altcar program is the new Maya 300. This vehicle can be fueled using a standard household electrical outlet and can drive up to 60 or 120 miles before recharging. The five-door, five passenger urban vehicle, is equipped with the safety, performance, and convenience features common to gasoline-powered cars. Starting June 24, under the program, Baltimore residents and tourists can rent these vehicles at the science center in the Baltimore Inner Harbor during the day to drive around the city to experience the feel of an electric vehicle.

"With our friends at the Maryland Science Center and ExxonMobil, we are demonstrating that creative collaborations are essential to finding innovative solutions that will help meet our future energy needs, create new jobs and protect our environment," said Sankar Das Gupta, president and chairman, Electrovaya.

A public company based in North America, Electrovaya's mission is to accelerate clean transportation as a commercial reality using its advanced power systems for all classes of zero-emission electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The Maya-300's advanced lithium ion battery uses separator film developed by ExxonMobil that significantly enhances the power, safety, strength and reliability of the lithium ion battery.

The lithium-ion battery separator film is one of the many innovative technologies that ExxonMobil has developed to increase the fuel efficiency of vehicles.

"ExxonMobil has a long, rich history of developing energy resources in an environmentally, socially and economically beneficial manner and we are proud to be a part of this program that supports innovative new technologies," said Jim Harris, senior vice president, ExxonMobil Chemical. "This program, coupled with the state-of-the-art exhibit, demonstrates our commitment to improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the globe."

The ceremony today took place at the science center and was attended by Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon and Malcolm Wolf, director of the Maryland Energy Administration. Both expressed their gratitude for the science center's leadership, as well as their support for innovative collaborations – such as that between Maryland Science Center, Electrovaya and ExxonMobil – that introduce clean energy choices that dramatically reduce environmental impacts.

Fact Sheet: Maya 300

About the Maya 300

The Maya 300 is one of the first lithium-ion battery powered electric vehicle to be launched in the world and is now unveiling a four-passenger lithium-ion powered vehicle in North America. Run entirely on electricity, the zero emission vehicle can drive for up to 120 miles without recharging. Due to the combination of exceptional energy density of the lithium ion batteries and the high performance of the electric drive system, the vehicle has impressive handling and acceleration.

The five-door, four-passenger vehicle is equipped with the safety, performance and convenience features common to gasoline-powered cars. These include:

Car Safety

  • Dual airbags
  • Anti-lock brake system
  • Steel body construction

Battery Safety

  • Battery designed to shut down flow of electricity if overheating occurs
  • Technology to prevent short circuits

Performance

  • High torque acceleration and handling at low speeds
  • Automatic transmission
  • Front-wheel drive

Convenience

  • Climate control (AC/heating system)
  • Power windows

What Sets the Maya 300 Apart

The Maya 300 brings many firsts among battery operated cars:

  • Different look than the traditional battery car: The Maya 300 is the size of a traditional subcompact car and can easily fit four adult passengers, with seatbelts, airbags and everything else you would expect from a traditional car.
  • Advanced battery technology: Most of today's hybrid and electric vehicles still run on yesterday's heavy nickel-metal-hydride batteries. The Maya 300 is powered by a Lithium-Ion SuperPolymer® battery, made by Electrovaya. The lithium-ion polymer technology platform enables lithium to be moved faster and more efficiently, allowing more energy to be stored in a smaller space.
  • Accessibility: Electrovaya minimized the battery's space requirements and eliminated the need for an enormous battery. A conventional lead acid battery pack would take over 5 times the space and weight of the Electrovaya battery pack.
  • Solely battery operated: Unlike the plug-in hybrids that switch over to gasoline after a certain mileage, the Maya 300 can drive for up to 120 miles on a single charge.
  • Affordability: The Maya 300 will be offered with the option of the standard battery pack that can drive for up to 60 miles on a single charge at a little under $25,000 USD. An extended 120 mile range battery option is also available for a little under $35,000 USD.

The Maya 300 also offers features that gas-powered vehicles do not, including:

  • Inexpensive recharging: The Maya 300 is recharged by plugging a simple extension cord into a standard 110V outlet found in most homes.
  • Low maintenance costs: The Maya 300 does not have many of the conventional maintenance requirements of gasoline-powered vehicles, such as oil changes, filter changes and engine tuning. Maintenance for the Maya 300 is restricted to refilling windshield washer fluid, rotating tires and replacing brake pads.
  • Instant climate control: Unlike gasoline-powered heating systems, the Maya 300 electric heating system provides instant warmth without having to wait for the engine to heat. The cooling system will behave the same way as standard automotive air-conditioning systems.

ExxonMobil's Role

The ExxonMobil Separator Film

The Maya 300 battery uses a separator film developed by ExxonMobil that significantly enhances the battery's power, safety, durability and reliability. ExxonMobil's co-extruded separator film increases the power, capacity, mechanical strength and safety margins of lithium-ion batteries.

The ExxonMobil film squeezes multiple layers of plastic into a thin membrane, enabling the battery to run at higher temperatures and produce more power. The film makes lithium-ion batteries, such as the Electrovaya battery, practical for consumer use.

The separator film exhibits a unique combination of properties including enhanced permeability, higher meltdown temperature and melt integrity, without compromising the quick shutdown performance and mechanical strength. The higher meltdown temperature significantly increases the film's thermal safety margin.

ExxonMobil's Commitment to Energy Efficiency

The lithium-ion battery separator film is one of the many innovative technologies that ExxonMobil is advancing to increase the fuel efficiency of vehicles. ExxonMobil innovations and technology led to the introduction of the world's first lithium-ion battery in 1991.

ExxonMobil is systematically working to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the manufacturing and use of its products, in the U.S., and around the world.

  • The company's advanced fuels, lubricants and specialty products are designed to help engines run cleaner and more efficiently.
  • ExxonMobil introduced a synthetic lining material that reduces weight and helps tires maintain proper air pressure, two important components in reducing fuel consumption.
  • The company is developing new technologies to improve the efficiency of internal combustion engines by up to 30 percent.
  • It is also developing an onboard hydrogen generation system that can be used in a fuel-cell vehicle to improve fuel economy by 80 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent, compared to today's vehicles using conventional fuel.

Maya 300 Availability

Electrovaya will be rolling out the Maya 300 first through sampling programs and government fleets.

The Maryland Science Center will be offering an all-electric car-sharing and rental program in Baltimore, featuring cars that look and feel like traditional gasoline-powered cars. Baltimore residents and visitors will be invited to rent the Maya 300 giving consumers the opportunity to become familiar with the all-electric car.

Through their subset potential users, there will be ongoing communications to educate consumers on what electric cars can do, and what needs to happen to bring them into the mainstream.

<![CDATA[2010 Chrysler 300C Interior Gets Massive Touchscreen]]> This image, pilfered from today's Chrysler conference at the NY Auto Show by Cars.com, demonstrates the 2010 Chrysler 300 may finally get a big boy interior and humongous touchscreen.

After a strong showing from the upscale new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it seems Chrysler may have finally stopped sticking Fischer Price interiors into their $30k+ vehicles and started using real materials. Gone are the days of gashing yourself on a seam-welded grab handle or smacking your not-so-funny bone on a rock solid armrest — or so we hope.

It's clear the interior isn't quite as advanced as what's found in the Chrylser 200C Concept, but it appears to take on the concept's philosophy of an MMI-centered layout.

<![CDATA[2008 Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance Preview And Event Guide]]> As you may have noticed when we told you about the North American debut of the Alfa Romeo Bertone B.A.T. 11, we started off the day yesterday at the 2008 Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance press breakfast. Actually, it was more of a press "stand-around-and-sweat". August 3rd will mark the 30th Concours held on the Meadow Brook Estate in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and they're planning on mixing things up a bit this year. Believe it or not, we're really looking forward to this one — there's going to be some really solid fantasy material on the grounds this year. Did someone say "Mormon Meteor?"

We were treated not only to the BAT concept reveal, but also to several other fabulous historic cars that were in attendance. Chief among them was a 1957 Mercedes Benz 300 SL, fresh from a 100-point concours-quality restoration at Legendary Motorcar Company, making its worldwide debut. If you watch Dream Car Garage this car will look familiar, as it's been their resto project for 13 episodes. The car is actually owned by Southfield-based BASF, so naturally it's wearing a fresh coat of color-correct BASF paint. Damn impressive car — we'd say it's probably better now than it ever was.

And lets not forget another car in the Jalopnik Fantasy Garage, the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. This one is owned by RM auctions, which will be holding a preview event on Friday at Meadow Brook and an auction on Saturdayi. There's a lot on the blocks at this event, including the entrance to the old Packard Plant here in Detroit.

Things actually get rolling on Thursday, with the Second Annual Hangar Party. An event held at the Oakland County Airport, the Hangar Party puts a dozen vintage planes and historical cars together with liquid lubrication and tasty edibles. If you want to get to that one, you better move fast, as we'd bet tickets for the 'oo-la-la' event are getting scarce.

On the list of 'new and improved' for this year is the first-annual "Destination D'Elegance." The full-day event on Saturday before the Concours features free entry, a huge variety of modern supercars, demonstrations on restoration and collecting, a bevy of the worlds most heady modern superbikes and much more. Also notable: If you want to know how the Hyundai Genesis feels from the passenger or driver's seat, Hyundai will be having on-site ride-and-drives of the new kimchi-scented luxo-barge all day. This will be the one the plebes go to, as it's free, and the actual Concours has a steep $25 entry fee. We really want to get there and cover the Pabst-soaked yard-dart contests, but we'll see.

Oh yeah, then there's the actual Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance set for Sunday. If you pay your ducats you can expect to see 225 of the finest motor cars in history. Like we mentioned, on hand will be the Mormon Meteor; a supercharged, inline-8-packing, Duesenberg Model SSJ (you'll see us licking it), a 1932 Helicron (give it a Google, it'll be fun), the only '56 Taylor Aerocar still in flying condition, 16 different V16 powered cars — with their engines displayed, and rarely seen Bill Mitchell styling concepts from GM's "Studio X" (sounds porny). Of course, that's far from everything. This year they've got a field of groundbreaking and historical Ferraris, so, you know, that should be pretty boring, as well as vintage motorcycles with sidecars. A little something for everybody.

Yes indeed folks, if you've never been out to the Meadow Brook Concours D'Elegance, this year wouldn't be a bad time to start coming. We'll be there as much as possible, bringing you fresh, wallpaper-quality images and car-induced, delirium-saturated prose. For details on events, times and locations, visit Meadow Brook Concours Online.

<![CDATA[1962 Chrysler 300]]> Remember the '62 New Yorker we saw nearly a year ago? We all liked its evil-beater look, but these cars looked pretty good when nice and shiny, too. It was quite a find when I spotted this '62 in the island's East End, parked in the exact spot in which the 1971 Chevy Blazer normally parks. I see the Chrysler parked there every once in a while, never at the same time as the Blazer, so I suspect they're owned by the same person.

62_Chrysler300_Front.jpg
Love it or hate it, but you can't ignore this face. Like the nose of a space cruiser! Maybe Chrysler will retro-ize this look at some point.

62_Chrysler300_Taillight.jpg
And the taillights- wow! These cars didn't just look good; the 300s could get going pretty well, too. The standard engine was a 305-horsepower 383; if that wasn't enough, you could spring for the dual-quad 413 in the 300H, which gave you a mighty 380 horsepower... and if that wasn't enough, a 405-horse version was available. Sadly, you couldn't get a 4-speed from the factory, but dealers back then were generally willing to make such an option happen for those willing to pay.

62_Chrysler300_Interior.jpg
The interior is very nice, although that can of starter fluid on the seat isn't a good sign.

<![CDATA[Starbucks Coffee Shop Takes A Chrysler 300 Break]]> Patrons at a Bellingham, Washington Starbucks got quite the surprise yesterday when a 2008 Chrysler 300 driven by an elderly man crashed through the floor to ceiling window and across the shop. Five people were injured in the incident, though none seriously, and the driver is facing a charge of second degree negligent driving. Fortunately for us, a table was embedded in the grille and it makes it look like the 300 is sticking it's tongue out. We're assuming the injured will be suing for millions to cover the cost of spilled coffee. (Hat tip to R_Evolution)

<![CDATA[DUB Edition Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, Please Make It Stop]]> Sweet quarts of Pennzoil, why must every automaker jump on bandwagons they have no business being on? Chrysler, the reason people put DUB wheels and parts on their cars is to be unique and stand out from the crowd. By partnering with DUB for the 2008 DUB Edition Chrysler 300 Touring and 2008 DUB Edition Dodge Charger SXT, you're missing the point. Now you have two underpowered cars, with largely unremarkable styling, and overblown Kicker sound systems that will be replaced anyway. Has everyone at Chryslerberus taken crazy pills?

<![CDATA[1964 Chrysler 300]]> I had a vague recollection of having posted a '64 big Chrysler in this series, but it turned out to be a DOTS Oakland Edition '64 Newport. So let's cross the Estuary from Oakland back to Alameda and scrutinize an oxidized-but-highly-original '64 Chrysler 300 today. This four-door hardtop, which lives in the vicinity of the '72 Capri, has survived many, many miles and yet still serves as everyday transportation.

64_Chrysler300_Rr_RH.jpg
The standard engine in the '64 300 was a 305-horse 383 V8. Of course, by this time the car might have had a 440 or 413 swap- you just never know with mix-n-match-friendly 60s Detroit cars.

64_Chrysler300_Emblem_Grille.jpg
No focus group would ever permit an automaker to have such a grille as this today; focus groups want bigger cupholders and a higher driver's seat, not vivid styling.

64_Chrysler300_LH.jpg
I like the "textured" paint, but those wheelwells deserved to be filled up by bigger tires.

<![CDATA[2011 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger To Remain Rear-Wheel Drive, Get Makeover]]> It's no news that the 300's been a hit for Chrysler — and we here at the Jalop obviously are fans of the Dodge Charger SRT8, and the new Dodge Challenger's certainly got itself a purdy mouth. But there's potentially going to be some fuel economy issues inherent with a RWD, Hemi-powered platform given the current desire by Washington to focus toward beating up automakers and away from a more common-sensical Euro approach to increasing fuel economy. So what's the three-headed dog-owned car company going to do? According to the website for the lovers, the dreamers and me the answer is — not a whole lot.

The Car Connection is reporting:

"Chrysler's plans for its large 300/Charger sedans include a major makeover for the 2011 model year. But while Chrysler's new managers have been dropping hints about the future of the HEMI engine, there's not much they can do about the rear-drive layout of the big sedans."
Although we can barely contain our glee about continuing a vehicular line-up including a rear-wheel drive power sedan, we are wondering why they're not looking to change that somewhat inefficient in fuel economy, but always efficient in fun, drivetrain plan. TCC's got an answer for that too:
"A switch to front-wheel drive could improve the fuel economy of the sedans, but reports to TCC say that there's no money set aside to make the switch to front-wheel drive."

New Jerseyite Pal-o'-tha-Jalop Jeff Musical likes to go out tooling around in his Audi A4. In fact, we're pretty sure he likes tooling around in his old A4 more than girls. <![CDATA[Even If Daimler Doesn't Want It Anymore, Chrysler Still Thinks It's "Engineered Beautifully"]]>

Despite the fact the German side of the German-American hybrid no longer wants anything to do with the 'merican side, the 'mericans are still trying to feel pretty inside. That's why they've released a set of four new ads touting their vehicles as being "engineered beautifully." That phrase apparently is the distillation of the fact that "...at its core, the Chrysler brand stands for stylish products, agile performance, refined quality and the confidence of being proud without being arrogant." Well, considering the fact that they're now seen as being Daimler-Benz's little whipping boy, I somehow don't know how much I agree with the fact that they're looking all that "proud" now, much less "arrogant." And don't even get us started on "agile performance" and make us bring up the new Sebring. But whatever it takes this jilted lover to get through the day, you know? Full release below the jump.

Chrysler Brand Debuts Campaign with New "Engineered Beautifully" Theme Line Auburn Hills, Mich., May 7, 2007 -

Stunning design and innovative technology take center stage in the new Chrysler brand TV and print ads, which break on May 8, featuring the new theme line "Engineered Beautifully."

Driven by award-winning new models, the Chrysler brand has seen a dramatic increase in sales, market share and brand image. Since 1990, Chrysler brand sales have more than tripled. No other American automotive brand has grown as much during the same time frame.

The Chrysler brand's succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand's standing as the leader in great design, purposeful technology and value. With the launch of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan and the 2007 Chrysler Aspen - the first-ever full-size sport-utility vehicle for the brand - the momentum is sure to continue with the launch of the all-new 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible and 2008 Chrysler Town & Country.

<![CDATA[Braking! Chrysler Group Looks For Do-Over On 2007 Model Year, Recalls 62,369 Vehicles]]> Oops. Hope you weren't planning on using those brakes in your new '07 model Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep-branded — umm — anything. We've just heard the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's recalling 62,369 vehicles for what Reuters says is a need to "reprogram a computer that is related to the brake system." And it's a lot of models affected: the Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, Dodge Caliber, Dodge Magnum, Jeep Commander, Jeep Compass, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Jeep Wrangler and Dodge Nitro SUV's. Hmm. Maybe we should have stuck with just telling you the vehicles the Chrysler Group's not recalling.

<![CDATA[Dealer Dollars: Chrysler Gives Dealers Incentive, But Will They Give It To You?]]> The 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's already shown a penchant for descent down the slippery sales ladder of incentives without saying they're incentives. Hell, maybe they're just lying to themselves. Whether they're telling the truth or just truthiness, the Detroit News is reporting today the chieftains in the sales and marketing team run by Joe "Direct Mail" Eberhardt have instituted a plan where they're giving dealers anywhere from $2,500 (on the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300) to $7,000 (on the Dodge Ram and Durango) for 2006 models. Why the need? Well, even though the kids in Auburn Hills have cut inventories from the highs of 647,000 vehicles in July to 499,000 reported yesterday for November, '06 models still account for 32% of current inventory. That's a lot of "old" model year cars and trucks to try to be shipping out the dealer doors n' lots. But, that means...

...if you're in the market for a new vehicle and you're willing to take the 2006 model — you'll be able to get a helluva deal from your dealer. That is, if your dealer's looking to share that money — because anything not used out of the unadvertised "dealer incentive" goes right back into their pockets. That means there's now a good way to see if your Chrysler Group dealer's playing you a fair deal, or just playing you.

<![CDATA[Chrysler Pick-Up Line Of The Day: Do You Have A Little German In You?]]>

Everyone knows how the rest of this pick-up line goes — but with this little bit of viral vid featuring a "little precision German" and then those "gag" ads we showed you over the weekend — one has to wonder where the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid's going with their combined marketing strategy. I mean yeah, it's funny — but hopefully, for Joe's sake, it's built on more than a YouTube vid and that horrid Nitro "world" ad.

<![CDATA[Ad Watch Exclusive: Chrysler Fires One Past The Censors]]>

Looks like the folks at BBDO Detroit were having all sorts of fun while filming those web-only ads we found creative on earlier this week for the 'merican side of the German-American hybrid, creating a few different versions. But these two commercials for the Jeep Commander (above) and the Chrysler 300 (below the jump) are definitely on the "gag" side of the "alternate" spectrum — and you've got to admit, it's ballsy of them to have even finished the creative. Watch for yourself and try and see if you can circle the differences between the originals and these not-so-safe-for-work-speaker versions in Jalopnik's very own video Ad Watch edition of the popular bartop coin-op game, Photo Hunt — touch screen not included.

<![CDATA[Ad Watch: Chrysler Group's Looking For You To Make The Folgers Switch]]>

Chrysler's using the same idea as the "if you can find a better car, buy it" ads — except this time they're striking straight into foreign territory with some humor in these web-only BBDO Detroit ads designed to push import-owners into buying new Chrysler Group vehicles. The first commercial, above is for the Chrysler 300 and below the jump we've got ads for the Dodge Caravan and the Jeep Commander. Best line of the entire campaign's got to be "Oh, thank you Chrysler!" and the running "smooth, good flavor" gag running through them all. Glad to see the Chrysler Group marketing team's moving over to the Detroit team with this campaign, else we'd be again looking at a Dr. Z-esque explosive blast of "flavorable" poop. And plus, haven't you heard — now that we've got a cell phone lane, Detroit's the new New York.

<![CDATA[Chrysler to Show 300C Long Wheelbase Custom at SEMA]]>

Among Chrysler's SEMA show cars this year will be a rocked-out version of the 300C Long Wheelbase it's calling the Pullman. Recalling the Pullmann Mercedes W100s of the 1960s, a favorite of Hugh Hefner and South American puppet dictators alike, the Pullman features rear suicide doors, two sunroofs, chrome dubba-dubs, a Hotchkiss Sportline suspension and mild performance tweakage. It's derived with an eye toward calling attention to Chrysler's often overlooked 300C Long Wheelbase, which it showed off at the New York show earlier this year. Perhaps it'll even make the cover of Pimp's Life.

<![CDATA[Steve Jobs Speaks: The IPod Is The Thing In 70% Of Cars]]>
Our gadget-obsessed brother blog is all over Apple's announcement, live-blogging Steve Jobs every facial expression today, so head on over if you're looking for some of that action. We're just happy Jobs started off talking about the most important place you use your iPod — your car. Jobs made an interesting comment:

"70 percent of the new cars sold in the US offer iPod connectivity as an option."

That's true — 70% of car models do offer it, but how many of them come equipped with it — and does showing a Chrysler 300 make sense, especially considering the well documented issue of the loss of aux-in when you go for the upgraded radio? Also, aren't they kind of pushing MyGig almost as a competitor to the iPod — at least in the car space? Just asking — maybe the Giz'll have the answers for us later on.

<![CDATA[Rumored! 2010 Iteration of Four-Door Chrysler 300 To Get Drop-Top Treatment?]]>
Although specialty builder and supplier ASC Incorporated unveiled its Helios concept, a lattice-structured ragtop based on a 300C four-door sedan, at the Detroit show last year, word on the street is the German-American hybrid's rejected the ASC design due to cost considerations and feasability studies. Instead, Motor Trend is reporting the 'merican side of the cross-Atlantic merger of equals has contracted with another cross-Atlantic merger of equals, the Austrian/Canadian killer combo of Magna-Steyr to build a Karmann-style retractable folding steel roof for the next design iteration of the big gangsta sedan. Of course, they've been mulling over this idea forever — so who knows whether this is real or Memorex.

<![CDATA[Insurance Institute Hits Them From the Side; Resulting Headlines Top List of Most Obvious]]>
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety apparently likes it like we do — releasing the results over the weekend of the 2006 side impact crashworthiness (we didn't even make that word up!) tests, and now we're treated to 75 articles in papers across the country all saying "Study: Side Air Bags Improve Safety." Well — umm — yeah, that's true, and thank you Associated Press for your hard work in making it clear to the whole world it's better to smack your head into a pillowy cushion of air than a piece of hard industra-plasti-vinyl with metal underneath. Geez.

Oh, the results? Is that what you're asking for? Well...

...the Chevy Impala and Toyota Avalon both received "good" ratings, the Buick Lucerne and Hyundai Azera received "acceptable" ratings and the Buick LaCrosse and Chrysler 300 received "marginal" ratings — all when tested with side airbags. Of the large cars tested without side airbags, the Chrysler 300, Ford Five Hundred and Ford Crown Victoria — all received ratings of "Poor." It should be noted that when the Ford Five Hundred was tested last year with side airbags, it received a Gold Medal — so it's got that going for it.

So remember kids, side airbags save lives.
