    1. Witness the birth of the Bangle Butt on the 2003 BMW 745i.
    2. Watch as the design gets panned by the press and average-Joe gearheads.
    3. See Lexus use elements of the Butt on the GS and LS lines.
    4. Sit idle for 4-6 years in accordance with company policy.
    5. Go bankrupt.
    6. Copy Bangle Butt for a new model set to be released approximately one decade after the '03 745i.
    7. Profit?

The current model has a generic, flat, uninspired rear.
The next one will merely feature trunklids and rear panels Sawzalled from '03-'06 5-Series.
Damn it, GM, you got the rest of the car right...

Anybody else notice the wiper in the frame? This looks like a Malibu wagon! First the CTS and now this. GM's getting the WAGON FEVER!

@FP - Funny how it seems quiet around here, eh?: Funny experience this morning. I was behind a first-gen Lexus IS300, and was thinking how quickly the "Altezza" taillight idea became dated, mostly due to a slew of bad copycats, who adopted the style long after it had jumped the shark. Just as I was musing that, I drove by one of those....

the current model isn't bad looking but it sure doesn't inspire lust like some other cars on the market. Can't recall a Chevy sedan that did inspire lust. If GM just refines and evolves the current style they could have a winner.

And for the record, the current Malibu already has quite a badonkadonk.

@Sportwagons, haulin' stuff and haulin' balls: I would suggest that this car should not have the aim of appearing lustful but instead have the aim of appearing better than its competitors. I strongly believe it is much more attractive than the Camcord.
Aside from this, it should appeal to the largest possible audience.

So, the current Malibu was deemed to be "not fugly," and must be "corrected?" Bangle has done more damage than he will ever know.

Seriously, this is not good news. The current Malibu is a handsome car.

Sigh. I know BMW represents a holy grail among the faithful, but really? Another "BMW-inspired" would-be clone from another manufacturer?

Call me old-fashioned, but I still want to believe GM has the talent and ability to go its own way and let the product speak for itself. The current Malibu almost did that. So soldier on - be unique, just refine that statement. Don't rush back to copy someone else. Don't try to out-Korea the Koreans.

OTOH, if they think Bangle is a language worth channeling, my argument could be moot and they have no talent - nor taste - whatsoever. Would be so GM to evoke another manufacturer after same maunf. has moved on.

I'll reserve final judgment until I see it; but, I'll say two things: 1) I've yet to see a Banglebadonk that I like and 2) More generally speaking, General, so something about the cheap-looking gold bowtie. No matter what you slap it it on, it makes it look like a bargain bin special. On the current Malibu, it looks like a hot chick wearing QVC jewelry. Maybe an understated silver satin finish...?

@ephophex: Ditto. Years of conditioning has tarnished the badge, IMO. Hyundai did the smart thing with the Genesis and just ditched the grille badge. That's probably going too far, but small and low-key is ideal.

@ephophex: You know, oddly enough, I have that exact same complaint. I really hate the gold bowtie thing, and if I bought a new Chevrolet, I would get it replaced with a silver finish bowtie, even if that meant I had to have it custom made.

@ephophex: I couldn't agree more. I wince every time I see Chevy proudly displaying its gold finery. I always imagine, say a new or revised emblem, and everything changes for the better when I do.

@ephophex: They need to take the bowtie of the Silverado and enlarge it about ten times. That ought to work. Then the logo can hide whatevre cromulent car is behind it. Sort of the Escalade theory of badge engineering.

Now, show us the car and stop telling us how great it is. Maybe we'll believe you then. I'm still waiting for my four rotor Corvette.

If that's true, then GM really is on a no-shit game plan, as the current Malibu is barely a year old, and it's a great car at that. I look forward to seeing it, but I'm not sure I like the idea of a Bangle Butt on a Chevy.
