Big improvement. Looks like they burnt a few offering to the spirit of the Z8 before they piked up their pencils. It'll be interesting to see how it looks in person. Other of these flame surfaced jobs all had some really interesting details, but never gelled right overall. This one may be ready for prime time. Now, can they do this to the 3 and the 5, please?
@13thfloorelevator: It's a psychological mind game. You are forced to imagine what once was out there to gawk at. This leads to longer contemplation times and thus more complex emotional reactions. Why do you think manufacturers use those silly car bags and camo? Same thing.
Or, it could be that it's gonna be like 10°F tonight. :^P
I've always kinda liked the Z series, and this is the best of the bunch. I'd love to have it with a hardtop. Or wait, does this one have a folding hardtop? I can't remember.
It'd be nice to have some clean shots of it - get that woman with the pink badge out of the way!
Wow. There is a freak out happening in this thread. Hairdressers rejoice, because another drop-top means more work. I doubt many will be buying this machine in this economy. And we should wait for the OTHER BMW roadster, which I am pretty sure is going to be a smaller, lighter model, before we trash the Bavarians. Sheesh!
Golf club portage figures serve to remind us all that this is a weekender car, not intended as a household's primary or sole vehicle (at least that has always been my interpretation...)
I associate Z3s and Z4s with trust-fund college coeds: Daddy's got the bucks, and a BMW or Boxster or Audi TT will catch the eye of the Ivy-league Frat boys and campus jocks.
Yep. Ixnay on the hairdresser theme, ta very much. Old indeed. Makes for easy jounalism, though.
The previous gen Z4 3.0si I had as a company car for 6 months, and the 2.5 I had before that were easily the greatest drivers cars I've experienced. Well, maybe something of Chapman stock is more track-worthy, but for a driving vacation / backroad frenzy around the British Isles in my view the Z4 was peerless.
The SLK 280 I've been running feels somewhat obese and gormless after the BMW, and while the folding hardtop is a shame, if it's what customers "want" and it prevents BMW dropping the Z4, I'm all for it.
I shall reserve judgement until a new Z4M or Club Sport comes along. That should separate the Barbers from the Junior Stylists....
@Rust-MyEnemy / Ye-MySternum: This is going to go up against the SLK series, and win, because it drives better and has a nicer manual. It definitely won't be selling to the previous generation of Z4 owners, unless they have ALSO gotten a bit portly and slower. Wait... (looks in mirror)...never mind. It looks lovely. My new summer car.
@layabout met the real Santa: You're probably right. But I've always wondered, why is it that MB have such an impossible time with the manual? It's not just here. They really do a poor job at them where ever they are employed.

About 400 lbs too heavy in my book. Damn folding hard top. Also, too much S-this and M-that and D-bag. The poseurs of the world will likely get a stiffy over it however.
@The Auto Insider: Why not,the the Z4 was only labeled a hairdressers car by people that don't know what they are talking about or have never driven one. It's getting tedious that everytime a two seater affordable sports car comes out that someone has to pipe up with the hairdresser or gay tag, why? Ragtops & folding hard tops are way down on my list of cars to own,but having driven a few i can see the attraction for people.
@th1nwhiteduke: No,not defensive. Although Auto Insider was probably just joking about it being a hairdressers car, there are some people that genuinely think that about certain cars without having ever driven them.
@manic-cynic: Yeah, I drove the outgoing Z4 - great car, but I don't think most hairdressers would appreciate the latte-spilling ride quality. On the other hand, folding hardtops, passthroughs, and talk of fitting golf clubs don't bode well.

And if the cockpit gets much further back, they're going to be driving from the boot.

Honestly, these "character lines" are the modern-day equivalent of the bumpers on a '58-60 Lincoln.

Even without driving it or sitting in it.
Stupid name calling, the car may well be grown up to be proper and good sportscar, a bit like SLK 2 is much better car than first version.
