Remember the 70s & 80s? A cool time when Porsche actually designed more than just one car? Sheesh.
This has likely been said, but everything in their lineup just looks like they messed with the lines of the 911 a little bit in CAD.
I am amazed at the "after seeing this, I really want a Porsche!" posts. Seriously? Did you not see the last 30 years of products from Porsche? I'm not questioning the performance here, but don't the Porsche engineers get tired of doing the same thing over and over (and over) again? I get tired of seeing it...
Let's see another 914, or a 924, or a 944, or a 928, or *anything* other than yet another variant on the 911. Something to break up the boring. Even Corvette has changed their design more than Porsche over the years.
@therealmusashi: ***Remember the 70s & 80s? A cool time when Porsche actually designed more than just one car?***
The GSM of a dealership that sold - among other brands - Porsche's, once told me this some years ago when I asked him how come he only had three models in stock? Were they selling that well that he couldn't keep 'em on the floor?
He replied: "No, we're just not stocking as many as we used to because demand has dropped off a lot... I mean, let's face it, how many times can you sell the same doctor the same black 911?"
Brilliant quote, and very true at the time, but as Skitter pointed out, at least they do have some more variety these days. Me, I love the Cayman, and my check-signing-finger has been getting a tad bit itchy for one of those recently.
@skitter: Thanks for promoting me, man, much obliged. However, you kinda proved my point - the Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne & Panamera are all frog-eyed derivatives of the 911 design language. None of them stand on their own. Just sayin'.
@HoonThatFerrari: I'm sure they've stuck with 911-derived designs because in their lean times, the vocal fans were all clamoring for it - and those people are still their base. I get that, and it's simple economics - make what people want to buy. I just wish they didn't all look the same...squint your eyes, and in a parking garage the Boxster, Cayman & 911 all run together. But a man can dream...
@therealmusashi: Front-end-wise, you're largely correct... but you have to look at the whole context of the entire design: They've chosen the front-end as their signature... fine, I don't have a problem with that - look at all the freakin' fins of the 50's, if you want a comparison, right? It's how the entire vehicle looks as an entity unto itself... again, to me the Cayman looks absolutely NOTHING like a 911... to you it looks the same.
Maybe you just need to find a parking garage where all the cars don't park in the same direction! :)
only 250 and it's not coming to NA? Good christ - every time they make something I truly, truly want - I can't buy it even if I had the money.
Can't wait for all the aftermarket mod companies to go nuts with this...and ruin it in 1.5 seconds flat.
If they are only making 250, I actually hope Porsche is more judicious with who they will sell these to (I'm sure they will be), and will refuse to sell them to companies like Techart, ABT and other such wreakers of Porsche mayhem...
Hi, I'm an overpaid engineer who reads Jalopnik during work. I came up with these drawings to increase the VW/Porsche market share in the US, furthering your goal of becoming the #1 seller of automobiles. They're called the red, white, and blue models. Because only rich capitalists can afford the 911 Sport Classic, these rich douche bags will pay a premium sum for showing their American pride. You never know, you may even get some bailout money from some bank executive with the scheme. It's an easy way for those CEOs to show the American people they are the true patriots.

To be honest, it's not as appealing as I expected. It has lost some of the purity and grace of a regular 911 with all the vents and slits and cutouts, the front looks too busy, and the ducktail spoiler isn't really doing it for me (but don't get me wrong, I LOVE it on the 2.7 RS. Maybe it's the badass paint schemes and lettering that make it great in that context?).
I am a huge Porsche devotee, but I won't be spending my time keeping my eyes peeled to spot one of these on the road. That'll be helpful too, since I don't live in Europe.
@Mobius: I believe that there is quite a difference in the size of the ducktail vs the whaletail. I think that some of the whaletails also were speed-sensitive, so they raised higher in relation to the speed of the car. We got behind one of those around Chicago once and we were running around 120 mph when it was fully extended.
I loves me some whaletail Porsche, but this will do nicely in a pinch.
@Ash78: I must remember this for the inevitable day an article is posted with pics of a wrecked one. Then we can sing along to the theme from "Talespin."

2. The engine is in the wrong place in all of the others.

Attention Porsche General Manager: you might want to check the office of your chief designer......I believe he died at his desk over 30 years ago.

But a ducktail looks so right on a 911. However, wasn't the old one supposed to be a whaletail?

Then I saw the rear shot, and thought, "Nevermind, they could fit a V10 diesel back there."
Let's just start that rumour shall we? The new Porsche 911 will be powered by the V10 diesel from the Touareg.

you mean the 3.0 V6 diesel from the Cayenne?
