I actually like the idea of a huge Benz saloon with a sledgehammer for an engine, but I guess that's just me.

Why wouldn't they show this thing at NY Auto Show? It's the perfect market. The only S-Class AMGs I ever see are in NYC and north Jersey.

I have to reiterate my comment from last week. I haven't been turned on by a modern Mercedes in a while. The G-wagon and Unimog are essentially '70s designs that have maintained their badassery. The AMG products lately have been cool, but not so much in the "let's give engineerd a hard-on" department.

I'm not really sure why. The engines are basically the same as this year. I think it's the styling, which is strange since I criticized Mercedes for blatantly ripping off Audi with the LEDs. There's just something there, though, that gets my motor revving.

Oh well. I can dream, and some day when these are on the used market at have lost about 80% of their value I can buy one and enter a PCH like no other.

I like how Mercedes naming system vaguely matches the buyers' stations in life.

You start with the Seek Class in your 20s and 30s. Once you've got that in hand, you spend 10-15 years trying to Eke Class while going into debt and paying for your kids' college educations. And once you're old and rich and no longer care, you drive around cursing the world from your Ass Class until you die.

And if you want to mix it up a little, ask your doctor about 36-hour CLS.

@Dhillaz: I think they could be okay if integrated really nicely (i.e. look like they could be stock or a factory option to someone who doesn't really know). The ones on the Civic look way too small and low, though, IMO. What purpose are they supposed to serve? They don't define the outer corners of the car, they don't actually cast any light on the road ahead, they don't blink with the turn signals (I assume), so I'm not really sure what the point is. I'm sure they could be done up really nicely, but it requires a lot of planning ahead.

Looking at another AMG last week I saw a strong correlation to an M3. If you cover the grill on this, it looks like an Audi. I really wonder why it is almost every car looks like all the others. Why does everyone's taste change at once?

    Also: LED's are cool.

@averyrm: I think the general shape of the A8 (assuming that's the Audi you were comparing this to) is closer to the last-gen 7-series than to this. The new body shape here actually looks like a cross between the last-gen S-class and the CLS, to me.

@averyrm: Great question. Maybe it's like calculus, where two people invent something at the same time, independent of each other, despite the fact that nobody was really yearning for it as a solution.

Or that one company comes up with something and everyone else copies it for fear of being left behind. Sort of like how all the gas stations on a corner will follow the pricing of the most popular name brand.

To help out with your ePRS:

Cool new toys: Night vision, Lane Assist, Drowsy Detectors with warning signals, ABC (Active body control) for those windy days, improved adaptive cruise control.
Hybrid: S400 Hybrid V6 (I'll call it S400H in honor of Lexus) and will have goodies on the inside like a 40GB harddrive, Lithium ion battery, USB, Bluetooth, LED lights, and all the other luxuries you'd expect for more money than your house.

I didn't cover the USB, Bluetooth, Audi-like LED lights, and the world's first lithium ion battery. ePRS does not understand hard drives in stereos in this age of digital media devices such as iPod that you can just plug in.
