Hay guys, look, I draw'd a CLS with two less doors! Does you guys like?
yayyy
God, Mercedes Benz continues to surprise with their lack of originality. I haven't seen anything that looked genuinely BENZ since say, 2001? I mean this thing could easily be a Volvo or a Lexus or even a Hyundai.
The people buying this car are buying "A new mercedes."
Here's how it'd go.
A: Hi, Pleco I just bought a new Mercedes.
Me: Oh really? What kind?
A: I don't know, it has two doors and it's new. And it's a Mercedes.
Me: ...I see.
I've had strikingly similar conversations with Lexus owners that had NO IDEA what they bought other than that it was a Lexus.
Glad to see M-B reintroduce a fascia that doesn't scare small children. This is a handsome, elegant grille that we haven't seen out of Stuttgart for eons. That photo alone should be used to sell the car.
Alas, the boot from some angles appears dangerously close to a fat Bangle butt. And like all Mercedes cars, some quirky styling details just make you shake your head. It will be interesting to see the tech specs. Can Mercedes resist burdening their new buggy with useless electronic crap?
Alright, time to against the grain here, It really isnt all that bad looking. Desipte the failed pillarless hardtop look, it is actually a fairly elegant look, much more so than the BMW 6. The overreaction has something to do with the fact that it is new, and we all like to make fun of things.
The 6 series is like that Italian girl with the big nose from down the street, looks great from the front, but then you catch a profile and you're like "whoa, what happened there?"
This new E500 coupe, though, is more like that girl you have known since pre-school. Maybe not the best-looking girl around, but she isn't ugly, and is graceful in her own way. She has a history of being clever and sweet to you. She seems both familiar and friendly.
Which one are you going to give a shot with you when the school dance comes around?
@pauljones: Scary to think we are often on the same page. I think it's not bad looking and somewhat original. For me and my opinion of Mercedes, it's a compliment.
For my thoughts on the design philosophy behind the Mercedes (Mercedeses? Mercedi?) that have been designed during your tenure as well as that of your predecessor Peter Pfeiffer, please review the enclosed Ziploc bag filled with vomit and tears.
wow. that has to be one of the most discordant and odd designs since the Aztek. I kept my criticism light after the sedan unveil, but this is far too much ugly to pass up. Hopefully it looks better in person(?)
Geez, the UJC (Ubiquitous Japanese Car) tail lamps and rear end disappoint on the coupe as well as the sedan. And the roofline is nice, or at least it was 6 years ago when Audi was using it on the A6. With every generation, Mercedes moves farther from unique and closer to generic. Damn shame that.
That being said, if I was in the market for a Mercedes-Benz coupe this size, I think I'd pop for a well-cared for, late build W126 560 SEC, upkeep costs be damned.
@Ash78: euuu. its the "I can almost afford a Mercedes". Just like the short-assed BMW 318ti. I'd rather drive a fully deckedout restored $10,000 Citroen 2CV than a $10,000 "almost mercedes" or "almost BMW". At least then I'm not trying to make up/hide my shortcomings.
@vwminispeedster appreciates Stud Beefpile's in-depth report...: I kinda dig those little Benzes, though. More than most of the cars they had out at the time, probably, but I'm not a huge MB fan in general. The 318ti is weirdly proportioned. In the same vein, the Volvo C30 is awesome.

Needs a bumper ornament and maybe one more right above the windshield. I need everyone in front of, above, and behind me to understand that this is a Mercedes.
Barring the abominable semi-hardtop look which fails at the back pillar, I really don't think that it's all that bad looking. It is certainly more attractive than the 6-series, but then, I suppose that doesn't take much, does it?
