I'd probably get this over a Civic, maybe over a Pruis, if I was in the market for a new, smallish sedan. It gets about 35% better milage than my car, and I'm sure it'll will perform adequately and probably very reliably. They'll sell plenty for commuter and second cars, and probably put more strain on Prius sales - which might be the entire point.
I must say, all these comments slamming the car for not being the reincarnation of the Viper are pretty amusing. It's supposed to be a competent, comfortable appliance with a different, more economical propulsion system. Cue that flock of stunned Saturn buyers...
Personally, I find all hybrids to be cheap. I find their drivers to be cheap as well (To clarify, I don't find all of their drivers to be this way, but some).
I didn't want to mention this, but I feel I must- their drivers are also tacky and classless. Lest I forget, they're also know-it-alls. They keep spewing forth their carbon-credit agenda, and trying to vilify all of us who remain somewhat skeptical. I'm not saying I don't believe in global warming, as it is a possibility, however, to reiterate, I am saying that I still remain skeptical.
What I hate most is that they constantly chastise those who choose to drive different vehicles, especially those who choose to drive gas-guzzlers. I don't mind people who drive the Prius because they want to obtain better gas mileage, or even if they wish to reduce emissions, but don't harp on me for my vehicle choices. I will drive what I want.
This must be the 100th time this month that I see a hybrid post and I am bored out of my skull. Where did the NPOCP and DOTS go or where is the LeMons coverage?
Paddle shifters? What on earth for? And why are those wheels so ugly? If you're going to put ugly wheels on a hybrid, you might as well opt for those flattish aerodynamic hypermile-geek wheels. These are just stupid.
@Rust-MyEnemy: The wagon Defender with soft top is at the absolute top of my fantasy garage. I think a first-gen 4Runner with removable top would be a better use of my money though. /also off topic
The 2010 Honda Insight will cost $19,800 making it the cheapest hybrid vehicle in the USA.
Styled like a Prius for extra smugness, the Insight will feature a CVT, Eco Assist, and a host of other range-reducing creature comforts.
Eco Assist includes an "ECON" button, not nearly as cool as a "SPORT" button, which will make the car slower and display the driver's smug rating. We stole the leaf idea from Ford and intend to implement it in our industry-first Multi-Information Display.
Standard safety features include the OPDS (Occupant Position Detection System) as well as air bags. Carbon credits sold separately.
"Upgrade to the $21,300 EX and you'll get stability control, heated mirrors, paddle shifters and other equipment."
I am so sick and tired of manufacturers making safety equipment (stability control)"Optional". How truly disgusting and telling of their corporate culture that they withhold life-saving technologies from those who choose the base model.
@b612markt: Optional stability control is hardly the lowest-hanging fruit on that tree of reasoning. Try checking out the state of inner-city public schools.
Can't a car company make a hybrid that's at least a little bit "sporty?" They're either land barges (in the case of GM's and Chrysler's SUVs) or dorky little cars like this and the Prius. I don't think hybrids are really the secret to efficient vehicles, but if they're going to be made, can't they be at least a little bit fun?
@Daniel Horney: I believe the Accord hybrid was the fastest model, but no one bought it and has since been canned. All three of those statements could be wrong though, it would bore me too much to research a Honda.

At work, we took in a Land Rover Defender, 110 inch, nine seater station wagon, fully loaded as trade against a C320 estate car.
We put the Defender up for sale for £15k, the next day a guy came in and bought it. His trade car? A Toyota Prius, '06 with only 17k on the clock.
Asked why, he said "Yeah, we've done the whole saving the planet thing, now we want to have some fun".
I wanted to buy him so many drinks.

In the case of the Defender, good ol' British engineering actually means something.

For this reason I have decided not to buy one. In fact, It's put me off hybrids full stop.
You just lost me as a customer. $300 more, you know, in quality territory, I might have been interested.
