Also Mercedes has got a 2.1L CDI that has 211 HP like a V6, 500 NM of torque like a V8 and gets 44 us mpg in the heavy ass E-class with BM. Now how about that VW?
How To Get A Diesel Engined Compact Car in America:
1) Endlessly whine about not not having any diesel engined compact cars.
2) Keep saying how much you would want to buy one.
3) Wait several years.
4) When Introduced, criticize the styling.
5) Upon further inspection complain that it's too small, expensive, heavy, slow, and gets surprisingly mediocre gas mileage.
6) Watch car disappear from U.S. market.
7) #@%&!

@wojo to Ford-Awesome SHO, Great Job!: Your sig is too long: Very nice. I've been meaning to make a flowchart of Jalop excuses complaints, especially when we get what we want, but I am too lazy and dumb. Plus, the new episode of Ow My Balls! is on tonight.
I really want to like it, but for that kind of cash, and Volkswagen's questionable quality, I just can't. I know it's comparing apples to monkey butts, but for fuel economy you could buy a Prius for that kind of dough and get much better city mileage. For a fun driver, there are quite a few cars out there that would be more fun for the same money or less. I just couldn't see myself spending that much on any Golf without "GTI" on the rump.
@Sam: I've never seen a volkswagen older than a few months that didn't have at least one quirky electrical problem. Mechanically, german. Electrically, they feel a little british.
@eatadonut: Sigh. No matter how many times I disprove this bullshit, someone always has to bring it back up again with "anecdotal" proof. The Commentariat's closedminded hatred of Volkswagen is one of the main things driving me away from this place.
Subtract a few cubic feet from the cargo area for a propane tank.
Propane injection = much lower EGT so you can crank up the boost/fuel to levels which make the OEM engine designers freak out.
Also reduces the likelyhood of owning an aluminum paperweight.
You want a Cummins ISB which cranks out over 600 HP and 1000+ lbs. of torque? Not a problem...if you can cool the charge enough.
There was a Final Gear a while back which had Vicki Butler-Henderson racing an NSX with a Golf diesel, unmodified save for nitrous njection and maybe some low/no-cost tweaks to the turbo/fuel delivery system.

I drove a MK V GTI and sold it when i needed more room and grabbed a used W8. Bad move- at 60K the torque converter went and estimates were in the 40 hours of labor range. Yeah, $6Kish. I promptly traded it in for a used ES330 and swore off quirky European cars (I had previously owned a "quirky" i.e., giant disaster of an early volvo C70 coupe). Why am I sharing this? Partly therapy. I loved driving the C70, GTI, and W8, I just hated owning them.

As long as VW's committed to offering it with the expectation of it being a niche seller for some time, this will be a great ride.
I have the feeling that VW + diesel + hatch + no slushbox is just going to be a little too odd for mainstream acceptance. Their loss, really.

On the other hand, Joe Schmoe will buy the 2.5, not the diesel. His loss.

Yeah, anecdotal evidence gets old. But stick around, please, you've got jokes and you've got insights.

Can we have this diesel instead please? 2.0L 170HP 6Spd diesel.
I know I just had to find something to complain about.

The drag race was disturbingly close.

Not propane injection, but similar in result.
