If Fritz could just get it into his head that re-badging is not necessarily bad. Holden Commadore to Chevy Caprice= Good.
Multiple Badging= GMC Arcadia, Saturn Outlook, Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave, Next Cadillac 'Slade, etc and so forth, all sold in the SAME market. That, Herr Henderson, is bad, and why YOU sir, should be fired. That, and all that other mismanagement stuff, and the whole "new boss, same as the old boss" thing.

It's the best reasonably priced car you've got you idiot! The development is already done, f*ck, 90+% of the tooling is done! Import the chassis from Aus, the Chevy styled body panels from wherever those are made, and assemble 'em here in the US, you'll be "creating jobs", and that'll look good to both your government overlords and the general public. The only new thing you'll have to make are the f*cking badges!
Too many times has GM broken my heart in the past ten years: The death of the F-body in 2002, the death of the Astro van, the death of Pontiac, the death of the Northstar replacement, the death of a RWD Cadillac flagship, etc. And yet, somehow, am I still a GM man.
"I am not a believer in re-branding and re-badging."
C'mon Fritz. The only version of this in the US was a Pontiac. Pontiac was a line of mostly re-branded and re-badged Chevys. Pontiac is dead. Besides the CTS, it's the best sedan you make. Are you really going to concede the full-size consumer market to Ford (Taurus) and Chrysler (300/Charger)?
I feel like GM is missing the point. They heard that everyone hated their badge engineering and re-branding and re-badging....and we do...when they do it with crappy cars and sell multiple versions here (see Aveo/G3). But re-badging an awesome car from the Australians is quite a bit different, especially when it would only be sold under one brand here.
And to the naysayers that say the G8 didn't sell well enough, I would be willing to bet it if came over as a Chevy in the first place, it would have done well. The same goes for the GTO

@ManicSquirrel: I'd have to agree with the Chevy thing. Also, the G8 needed more advertising to get the word out, most people have no idea what the car is and that it can compete with BMW's. In fact, a lot of people seem to think its a G6.
@UncleBenny: Don't look at me, I did buy one. Actually, I think this is great news: I get the "looks like a cop car" benefits of a Crown Vic, but (almost) all the fun driving experience of an M5. Hopefully this will also lead to lots of cheap parts that don't have to be shipped in from Australia.
@FormerlyPreferredCustomer: "..I wanted to, but GM took so long in bringing the GXP to the States that I didn't have time to do so..."
Yeah, that was my problem too. Then, when I finally found a G8 GXP in the right color, and went to go look at one, I drove up in my R32, and the brilliant salesman didn't think I deserved a road test. Tried to push me off on a GT. I had to talk to his manager to get access to the actual vehicle. By the time I went through all the gates, I wasn't really all that interested anymore.
@UncleBenny: Maybe the economy shouldn't have tanked when it did so I could have gotten a better job to be able to afford payments and insurance on a G8. Alas, all I can afford is a well-used car, and the G8 never got the chance to be my next car.
@UncleBenny: Or, GM could have a competitive high-volume seller (ie, not the Cobalt, and not the Trailblazer), that pads the bottom line so that low-volume cars like the GXP can be offered despite relatively meager sales. It's not like BMW makes most of its cash on the M5....
