    So if we can't get this, the Si Hatch and a number of other cars in the US does that mean the europeans not get the camaro, challenger etc?

    Just as I don't fully understand "Passat vs. Passat CC", I don't fully understand "Scirocco vs. GTI/R32"


    Can someone perhaps enlighten me? Is it more than just image and marketing?

    @Ash78: It's probably a matter of appealing to different age groups. I don't want to see granpa in a Scirocco, whereas granpas in Golfs just kind of fit.

    @Ash78: Think Ford Falcon Futura vs. Ford Mustang. The fist is a sort of sporty car that's still sedan-y enough that your wife won't suspect anything. The second is so sporty, she'll know you're cheating on her.

    @Ash78: Not really, but then the same could be said of many models out there. VW just does platform prostitution a little better than most. It doesn't seem as bad if you just think of it as a sort of "special edition" model, because that's fundamentally what it is. In the same way that other manufacturers will come out with a special model with more gadgets, gizmos, a different grille, whatever (think F150 vs. MK LT), VW comes out with a slightly different model that appeals to a different clientele. The models aren't competing against each other, they're designed to bring in someone who might not buy a GTI or Passat because they look too staid or traditional.

    It still baffles me, despite being a (thus far) VW loyal guy with thousands of hours in the forums and a graduate degree in business/marketing, how they are able to sell this along with the GTI, never mind the TT, A3, etc, just down the street at the Audi shop.


    On paper, this car ought to be a bigger screwup than the Phaeton, but yet it's still around. I guess with cannibalization, you don't notice it as much when your starving buddy is taking tiny bites out of your frostbitten fingertips. You'd notice if he chomped down on your ass, though.

    @Deartháir: Yeah, I can see the aesthetics angle, since this and the CC both look superficially better than the cars they're based upon. This kind of sub-segmentation makes more sense in Europe, where VW is the big kid, but the CC in the US is still a little confusing to me. Same car, 2/3 the space, 4/5 of the seats, slightly nicer goodies, and a 20% premium on the price. Academically, this is nuts...but practically, you can see how it might draw a budget-conscious Mercedes CLS shopper into the showroom.


    I am happy to see the next-gen GTI will adopt some of the Scirocco's cues, which is definitely nice. I'm getting a little tired of the big-mouth grille on VW and Audi. Hopefully they'll keep the weight about the same.
