@Cognitive Friction: I saw a brand-new Camry with a stick when I worked at the Toyota dealership. That big, ugly, cylindrical gray stickshift sticking out of the console looked so out of place, in all the right ways. For a minute, I wanted it, as a big fuck-you to the automaticisation of our poor automobile.
I just find the whole current "mpg wars" a bit lame. Economy is important, sure. But the sliding scale of compromise is very, very short in this country and much of the legislation isn't helping matters. All I'm saying is that if we're suddenly supposed to care about mpg, it would behoove us to look around a little bit for some benchmarking, rather than patting ourselves on the back for something a lot of the world would scoff at.
The US is the Jamaican bobled team of fuel efficiency, but worse--you can't script a movie out of the situation with John Candy and Doug E. Doug. But the Camry could fit four John Candies in it, which is nice.

If almost every car can exceed the EPA estimates when driven correctly, why are the ratings treated like gospel? Or a better question is, why do the estimates suck so badly, even after a re-tool?
@Timtoolman, now with power tools!: In 2007 or 2008 they changed how they rated gas mileage for the same reason that they changed from engine horsepower at the engine instead of at the back wheels.
It wasnt just the foreign brands. But the Prius was probably the cause of changing the city cycle. I think the change ended up being 8% to the mileage numbers to all cars
@fodder650: I'd bet you gat a Hell of a different number if you change from measuring HP at the enging to the back wheels... especially on a Civic, Accord, Corolla, Camry, Malibu, Impala, Focus, Tarus, Calibur, ... now, when you get to the Charger, I'd bet they're a lot closer.
@fodder650: Horsepower was measured at the engine before and is measured at the engine now. SAE changed the measurement standard protocol, somehow, but the basic principles are the same.
In much the same way, EPA changed their testing procedure for fuel economy. Cars were all getting much better ratings than they perhaps should get because the cycle did not include idling or air conditioner use, and the highway test was conducted at 55 mph. This has all been changed for the new standard, and EPA's numbers are much more accurate in the real world.
If you can't be the Gold Standard, at least you can be the Opel Standard?
Hooray, 33! Now if we're really serious, we can make some power compromises, allow clean diesels and more FSI gas engines, and see 38-40mpg, no problem (0-60 in more than 10 seconds?! Are you kidding?). But it'd probably be better if we just let the states decide how to accomplish this, right?
Did you know that I die a little every time I see one of these on the roads. Mostly because I know that Im going to be stuck behind some slow driving person in a Camry "Sport" going 5 under the limit.
Honestly I like it, and I can see why other people continue to buy it. I think you guys are bashing it just because of the sheer amount of sales. That alone should let you know it isn't terrible, and no this car will never be unique. I never liked a Camry until the new models came out, and honesty I don't think its anywhere near the same style of bland as the Camrys of old. Kudos to Toyoda for upping the anti so much that I don't think you call this bland, the only way you could is because the number of sales... unless the new "bland" is a close to 300hp v6, with a nav screen, and leather interior.

1. You can get a Camry with a stick?
2. Dodge still makes the Avenger?

"You too can achieve this with good driving"
But we Americans no longer enjoy challenges, apparently. The new EPA ratings are like No Child Left Behind meets "Yes We Can"

Fit the same big metal push bars they put on police Crown Vics, and learn to master the PIT manoeuvre. Would make the commute much more fun.
