How much nickel is in the chrome and steel of a Mustang?
Exactly how "nasty" is mining nickel? Numbers please. Sudbury has cleaned up a lot, and apparently "Due to the high mineral content of its soil, the floor of the Basin is among the best agricultural land in Northern Ontario, with numerous vegetable, berry, and dairy farms located in the Valley".
In your world, how many pounds of nickel is someone allowed to mine in order to put about 20 tons less greenhouse gases in the air over the life of her car?
@pauljones: Do you know how much greenhouse gases are produced by the mining process?
No I don't, but a simplistic way to look at it is that energy costs money. Somebody's paying for the diesel to mine the materials. If it took as much energy to produce the materials in your car as you consume driving it, then you'd pay a fortune for it.
What Green Car claims to do lifecycle analysis, I haven't had time to read their cited studies. On a 0-100 scale they rate the Reva G-Wiz electric as a 6, the Citroen C1 1.0i a 29, a bunch of small Euro diesels in the 30s, and the 2008 Prius a 35.
@skierpage: You're still not understanding what I am getting at.
Yes, energy costs money. But in this instance, that simple fact is completely irrelevant.
You asserted that the Prius is a significantly greener car and puts out less greenhouse gasses than other comparable non-hybrids, and cited the statistic of emissions put out by the owner/operator in the life cycle of the car. I pointed out that in that context, you are correct. But that context is also very limited in scope. If you look beyond the life cycle, and at the overall production cycle, however, the story changes. I illustrated that in my previous comment.
When it comes down to it, no car whatsoever it truly "green". Whether or not the Prius is significantly greener than other cars all comes down to the context that you choose to take into account. The narrower the context you set, the greener the car appears, and vice-versa.
I hate children. I hate soft acoustic music. I hate the green movement. I hate John Krasinski (the smug bastard doing the voiceover, presumably). I hate feelings. I hate the Toyota Prius.
You may think you're all that, but I invented solar-powered ventilation first, it's called wind. If your customers weren't so prisy, maybe they would roll the windows down. Oh, and I even made air filters too, they're called trees. I heard your customers like hugging them. And that sun? Yeah, I made that too. And you don't need a video to understand how to make it work, no creature input necessary.
@maximum-sienna: It started here 2 months ago, so it's almost over for me. Waking up every morning with bloody boogers for 2 months is not fun. Just washed my car yesterday for the first time in 6 weeks--because it was pointless to do it when it's filthy again the next day.
Humans were not made to inhabit Arizona en masse. Nice place to visit if you're too poor to go to the moon, though ;)

BTW drove a Fiorano this weekend for the first time. Holy, holy holy...
Now that's a car. Corvette owners can only dream their car was this cool.

But I don't hate this commercial. It's unique, and very well done. Bravo on the ad, Toyota. Damn shame about what it's pitching.

Idiots. The Prius is not green. It saves gas and that's it. Nickel is nasty stuff to mine.
Sheep.
Hell, according to this, my Mustang is more environmentally friendly on a lifecycle basis than the fucking Prius.

You can punch the babies, I'm going to punch all of my engineering school professors who drove one in spite of this knowledge.

Dear Ash,
I'm sorry to hear about your allergies. Move to Arizona.

P.S. Don't live in Washington, D.C. The trees just exploded with pollen, and everything has a half-inch coating of the stuff on it.
