completely pointless... you know because people who are buying 100,000 dollar luxury cars really give a shit about gas mileage. Personally for my hundred grand I would go with either an XJR or a Quattroporte and sit in just as much luxury and not look like a European diplomats chauffer doing so.

@Bullitt417: You do know they offer DIESEL S class cars too, since decades, and they sell pretty well.... so clearly MB didn't build it for you, but I'm pretty sure they know what they are doing.

It's a nice car, but I also have to echo Capatain Slow's comments. The complexity of the electronics in this beast make me quake in abject fear. And it's not just this lovely Merc, it's getting the same way in almost all the luxury marques. Look at the 7 series BMW, for instance. I wonder if anyone is going to make a car for Luddites like me who just want luxurious metals, real leather and real wood interiors, and a simple six-speed manual transmission? I don't really WANT a flat touch-screen for controlling car functions. I like the tactile feel of switches that snick in a satisfying way when I press them. I like rotary knobs for fan speed, that are infinitely variable. I like paper maps, not GPS units. I am becoming techno-fatigued.

Don't look at me that way, kid. Now get off my lawn...

@DoctorNine: I think these are cars for folks who get them on three year leases (preferably picked up by their company) and then turn them in after two years. Thinking of the maintenance and repairs these will require in ten or twenty years is terrifying. Maybe it's time to get that doctorate in Electrical Engineering...

Maybe some clever person will figure out how to rip out ninety percent of all those electronics and get down to the basic, decent car under all of the gizmos.

It's great they are making it more efficient, but what about maintenance. This has more sophisticated electronics than early super computers. I enjoy luxury as much as the next monicled baron, but let's just hope it never ends up needing maintenance. When are they inventing that one, a maintenace free car. Nothing fails ever.
