Actually I don't like the way it looks in that color. Maybe I actually need some breakfass Scotch for real. After all it's my day off today and I am up at this ungodly hour. Mmm...some bacon and scotch sounds good.
Maybe it's just me, but these matte cars don't look as good as expected. They look like unfinished, like ricers who probably couldn't afford a proper paint job and decided to claim the primer look was intentional.
And I'm pretty sure these finishes aren't the least bit durable. Like any product with a matte finish it's more prone to wearing down to a shine. I'm also quite certain these paints pick up a lot more grime than conventional clear coats. There's an Integra in the area covered in what I presume is light grey primer. They did a fairly thorough and consistent job of it. But I've been noticing it darken in spots, especially one whole section of the bumper above the exhaust.
And the problem is that any little imperfection and the whole thing looks like crap. Just look at that first photo, the paint job looks awful.
Hi, Matte Grey here, filling in for Spruce Green, reporting to you live from outside the Jay-Z/XJR event. The investigation continues, as police have spotted an overpriced Jaguar painted to look like Detroit scrap iron. More to come at 11:00, when we'll also discuss how the common household ziptie just might save your life.
I'm getting tired of this matte craze, black or grey. There's a flat (another word for matte, BTW, it just sounds as boring as it actually looks) black Honda Element that lives a couple blocks away. Fucking thing always looks dirty.
Great article, but I'm sure Matte Hardigree could've done better ;)

Sorry Wes, but I have to echo the "not feeling this" sentiment. Jaguars were meant to be gorgeous shades of green, blue and red with hints of metalic and/or high gloss. Ever since I was a kid, long before I knew anything more than pure aesthtics, I lusted after the gorgeous, vibrantly colored Jaguars. Their colors were always unique and eye-catching. This just strips the car of all its class and beauty... It makes it a ghetto g-ride, likely owned by the likes of Michael Phellps, Jay-Z, SLR guy, or any other doofy-looking, backwards-hat-wearing d-bag with fake tanner and overbleached grin (overshaddowed only by his Mr T rivaling bling).
@skaycog: "It's just a car." Do you know what website you are on?? I'm sure there are many bloggers who would love to throw egg in your face for that comment...
@eggwich del fiero: Jay-Z sucks? Really? Is is good? No teeth right? Awesome! You had him before or after the concert? Daymn I missed it.
Matte colors are OK if on the right car, XJR/LFA/Lambo, not the right cars.
BTW went to a "ricer" event at Englishtown over the summer, 91' matte black civic 2.o Turbo running 11.23 @1116 mph. Then drove it home. All for less then 10Gs.
@CraigSu: Thank you for that. I didn't stop to think what some guys might think of that comment. I knew Flick would get it. I guess that's one of those "open mouth, insert foot" comment. :)
@Pessimippopotamus: i disagree. flat paint, in the form of primer, looks great on older cars. new cars, however, should have new paint; i just don't get why anyone would buy a new car without new shiny paint... of course, i also don't get why anyone would buy a new car, so...
@TENGRAM: Primer tends to imply function (not just sloth), and perhaps the anticipation of the paintjob to come. This is a silly style statement. Pah. New money.
@xxpor: That actually looks pretty. The Ad Personam Lambos come with matte luster paints that makes them look properly coated, the effect works like the pearl paint without the excess sheen.
Now, that Jag looks like it's made of unpleasant graphite.
The Lambo's definition of matte paint is as far as I would tolerate on a new car.
It's a poor workman who blames pedestrian safety regulations for his awkward front bumper.
Every time I see a new Jag I think how much I'd love to have an old one - a Series II XJ12, especially. The company really did lose its soul sometime around 1990 and has never gotten it back.
Now you see I'm confused.
As a native brit (and I don't like that term but never mind) I am more than a little biased when it comes to Jaguars by my heritage. Not only that but when the UK car media get hold of any new Jag they tend to wax lyrical about how just so "bloomin' brilliant" it is (bar the X type, they're not all daft!). In fact, hearing that the XF has been getting awards from other countries for best car etc kinda makes you believe the hype a bit too. In fact my dad has an XF (after owning 2 S-types) and having been given the keys once (and only once...) I thought it was a real contender.
Based off these opinions and views I have it in my head that (I thank Top Gear mag/tv show for this one too) the XK is like driving a DB9 volante for nowhere near as much money.
It's actually quite refreshing to get another take on the Jag, though it is making me doubt how "free talking" our car mags are. After all they were never particularly known for their willingness to bend their reviews to match a car makers wishes. In contrast I've seen what some US mags call reviews and actually think that press releases are less biased. Though now you have me doubting and I don't like it!
I'd like to wholly say I disagree with your reservations about the car as it's clearly in a different league to the M6 and SL but I know that's not necessarily true, especially as I've only driven one of the above and it isn't the Jag.
I think I'm just confused now.
Especially as my girlfriend has only two types of cars that she's ever interested in, Fiat 500's and Jaguars. I need this car to be good, for the sake of our relationship!
@englishwhitetrash: is the Jalop proletariat: I want to love Jaguar too, but I just don't understand where the love fest the British press gives them comes from. The XF is pretty meh in terms of handling and performance and the interior quality goes for gimmicks over substance. This XKR just isn't up there with other expensive convertibles.
The brand gets a lot of goodwill, from us included, but objectively it's just not up there with its competitors.
@Wes Siler: I guess you can only excuse the "british build quality" thing for so long before you get worn out from making excuses. I guess national pride will always add a rose tinted hue to most Jag reviews over here much as it might for a half decent US car in a half decent US mag. Or is it the fact that we just don't have a car industry anymore aside from the small volume sports car set? I can't be sure.
I guess the real question is, exactly how Jalop is this car? How many points would it get as a daily driver in 20 years? I know we love our quirky motors here at los-jalop but where is the line drawn between quirky and crap with new cars?
