I would hope that "they" dont sell press cars to the GP. You'd think that they would be good cars to take back and tear apart and study....nothing like real-world abuse to test a car!

On second thought, why would they jump this car?

I could see jumping a WRX or an EVO, even a truck, but why would you jump a luxury sports car?

Does the reason "because they can" apply here?

There's a back road about 7 or 8 miles from my house that has a bump similar to that one. There's a short flat and straight stretch right before it, and once you're up on it there's a slight incline and then nothing--it just drops off into nothingness. You can get air in it going the speed limit, or, if you're really trying, you can get all four wheels off at once.

My girlfriend's F-350 took it like a champ. All four wheels off the ground for a second, and then...

...some repair bills.

When a car is abused in this manner I don't see how the press can get a good feel for it, because after that, something is probably out of line or broken.

If I was given a car that I wasn't responsible for in any way, I guess I would do the same thing.

@Flathead Smith: There's decent money to be made in maintaining the media fleets.

Clutch, brakes, tires almost every time.

Suspension, bodywork, transmissions every once and a while.

That said, media miles are like dog years. 25k might as well be 120k.

@Mad_Science: This is very true. Having been on many, many media drives with manufacturers before, and witnessing first hand the amazing lack of basic vehicular control from some of the regional newspaper and small-time web reporters, these companies probably make huge bank replacing parts.

Speaking of which. Dulles Airport this weekend. Returning car at the budget Rent-a-car counter, and I was watching the car rental employees dragging the rear wheels (with the parking brake) while gunning the engine. Yeah...no rental cars for me.

The specs get me hot and bothered, but the looks leave me cold. While it's not an ugly car, it lacks a certain Jaguar-ness. Hopefully, they can find their soul again someday.
