What a incredibly blatant rip-off of the Infiniti G37. Sure, buy the loaded model for $30k and see 50% of that evaporate in 3 years. Buy a G37 6M/T fully loaded now for about $38k and the residual will be much more like 59% or higher in 3 years. Not to mention the G37 is probably i. safer ii. quiter iii. much nicer interior iv. more reliable v. an infiniti, not a hyundai. don't get me wrong, if I were younger and more strapped for cash I would probably get the 2.0T r-type. Part of me just feels that it's not good to support such lack of creativity. The steering wheel and buttons, seats, dash, pretty much everything they did is ripped off right form infiniti, except uglier and cheaper. Is it worth $5-8k for the additional creature comforts and brand cache? Well that's up to the individual I suppose. You can always modify an infiniti to make it faster and lighter, you can't modify the Genesis to NOT be a Hyundai.
I was going to file this under "potential new Fox-body 'Stang" until I heard that it could corner, had a decent interior, and didn't have a V8 (but the turbo-four is actually affordable and the six doesn't suck).
On the other hand, it's ugly as sin. I can ignore that, though, for a car like this.
This is for people who want a G8 with fewer doors.
Wait, you guys are nit picking the interior of this thing for being cheap after you excused the Camaro's cheapness? Come on.
I went to my local auto show this past weekend and they had a Camaro LS on display. I sat in it and the interior was absolutely wretched. It's every bit as cheap as a Cobalt. Rock hard plastics with sandpaper texturing. Yuck.
I'm sorry, there's no way this Hyundai is worse than that. You can tell that much just by comparing the pictures.

I'm also still curious as to why this is named the "Genesis Coupe" as it bares no resemblance to the sedan, and none of the same features compared to the luxury comforts of the base model.
Handling compares favorably to the RX-8? I don't buy it. The RX-8 is one of the finest handling cars I have ever driven.
I'm sure this car offers a great performance-to-dollar ratio, but are you trying to tell me that Hyundai has designed and engineered a true sports car with all the nuance and communicativeness of, say, an old 993?
@Wes Siler: True, that. The first 911 I drove was a 993, which I had use of for a day running up and down the PCH. The bucket seats were AMAZING, the steering was unbelievable, and the power was fantastic. When I got back in my Miata that night to go home, I nearly crashed on 92 because I kept sliding out of my seat and felt like I had no control of the car. I can only imagine how scary it would be to drive a family sedan or SUV after driving a 993! The only other experience I've had like that, feeling out of control in a Miata, was after go-karting for the first time. It took a couple tries to remember that I had to steer normally around corners and couldn't (legally) kick out the back end to slide it around.
@bugattatra: Come clean, Wes. What do you make of Edmunds's comparison test? They said the G37 coupe "is more anxious, more precise and more immediate."
Hello Japan. This is the car that you should be building. Nissan would make a killing if it brought a Silvia to North America. With the economy the in the crapper, cheap RWD cars are exactly what people need. Save the M3s and G37s for people with stable jobs. Almost anyone can afford a mid 20K car.
@Wes Siler: I thought it we had a story a week or two ago that that was go again.
This whole on-again-off-again thing is starting to resemble my sex life. Sometimes it's on, sometimes it's off, depending on how much overtime I have to put in.
I actually like the interior and the proportions of the car. I still think the front is too goofy. Hopefully the aftermarket will step in with a plethora of botox and facelift options.
The interior is fine except for the instrument panel, which is awful. It looks like they tried to knock off the Camaro, realized it was too obvious, and then tried to change it just a little to claim that it was different. And failed.
I don't mind making a few compromises in terms of exterior looks, as I am not looking at the exterior when I am driving. I am, however, looking at those instruments, and they are horrible.
@Syrax missed the f*cking meme: I agree but it's hard to imagine anyone coming up with something that helps because they are still going to be the same shape. A more refined/reshaped airdam I think could go a long way. Too bad the aftermarket typically shuns "subtle" in that department.

Rice is twenty year old civics/accords/corollas/etc. fitted with massive wings, fart cans, neon underglow, and otherwise left stock.
I will grant the Z, Genesis, and RX-8 more respect than that.
