@long_live_the_E36: That sir is extremely not true. The only thing these have in common is the 3.0 V6, and even those aren't tuned the same. I was very thorough in asking about the chassis development, and the SRX doesn't hold a single chassis stamping in common with the Equinox. There are similarities, but the SRX is much closer to the Epsilon II architecture than the Theta.
@2Wheelsor4: Ze Ümlaüt in Motörhead: Go test drive a CRV against it. Some of the dash materials are better, but then materials in the console are worse, the sunroof is nonsensical, and there's way less room.
it is yet another retarded vehicle. Carpocalypse2 anybody? VVT, and sideways. silly gayboys. how about straight forward, and quit phony doublng horsepower numbers...Repulsive. Are we gonna worship 70 degrees and downtown tokyo the rest of our car tortured lives? there is smarter in that realm too..this is not a peoples choice, it is not a winner, go play with your budgets until extincted . stupid ass**les.
These guys at Jalopnik seem to have a lot of journalistic integrity (a rarity these days). I doubt they falsify their numbers. And if it was a mistake, they would clarify it.
If this thing was made out of solid gold...I still wouldn't care. GM vehicles have always been a hard sell for me, but thanks to the bailout/takeover, they're a no sale.

FWD (bias) in any car/crossover/suv will always be a deal-breaker for me no matter who's making it. Having no manual transmission would make me cry.
I'd buy the smaller '09 Forrester any day before this thing. Unfortunately Subaru elected not to offer the 2.5XT models with a stick in the USA. Idiots.
@1300ccsoff*ckingfury: While I share your despair over this development, all we can do is shout into the dark. The take rate is so low on manual transmissions these days, the development and manufacturing costs are only ever recovered for sporty vehicles. The days of manual transmissions as "standard" are sadly, over.
@OfficerRabbit: Pardon, but what do you propose they build? A hybrid? They're working on one with a 40-mile purely electric range. A family sedan? They have one. It's called Malibu, and it's a Camry-beater. A compact? Okay, you've got me there. But the Cruze is on the way.
@Floozy Plushbroom will eat 60 figs: Haha... a compact. Definitely a compact. Really though, I'm thinking this is just absolutely poitively ho-hum. Perhaps that has more to do with the segment as a whole though.
@OfficerRabbit: Sadly, this is what Americans want. Possibly because Americans are idiots. If it's equal to or better than the Rav4 and CR-V, it'll sell well to anyone who doesn't grow a dull grey woolen coat and feed on grass. Or, for that matter, anyone who can't fight off a coyote with a flock of friends to help.
@OfficerRabbit: The Cobalt, despite being outdated, is still an ok car, very, very ho-hum. It's a reasonable competitor to the Corolla. Still, it gets great economy with a stick, and the SS is more interesting than the XRS.
@Floozy Plushbroom will eat 60 figs: and there is the problem. It wont sell outside the US, because nobody would want to buy it, while the RAV4 and CR-V do sell outside the US...
So even if it does sell well in the US, it will never be able to make the same kind of profit for the company as the japanese equivalents do.
And since the car market outside the US is growing at a much faster pace, this difference will become more and more noticeable in the next few years.
In a nutshell, this is the main problem with the US car industry. If they want to survive they have to build cars that can be sold anywhere in the world.

@steelwheels: an eeror in every psot!: I will be stealing that phrase. But I agree. Didn't know GM had contracted its design out to Ssongyang already.
That said, I think there's some sort of intermural competition to see who can design the ugliest compact SUV and get away with it. CR-V and Rav4 make for tough competition, but BMW won't be outdone with the X1 coming along soon!
My measure of cheap build quality: 2.4L (188hp) yet only 1500 lbs towing capacity... (Above mentioned Subaru less hp: 170 but can do more, towing 2400 lbs... Why? Cheap build quality of engine/trans. is only possible answer).
@dusanmal & Floozy Plushbroom will eat 60 figs: They both share an identical optional hitch but the V6 gets an uprated transmission and a 4500 lb tow rating. Sure, it's all about the transmission, but it's also the buyer. People who want to tow stuff are going to want more power and greater durability, and they'll be willing to give up high fuel economy for it. Considering GM is expecting between 70 and 95% I4 mix (depending on the price of fuel), I think they're biasing on the correct side
How much gasoline can I buy for my 13mpg truck for the price difference, figuring in the $4500 "cash for clunkers" credit?

GM has been on the long and difficult road to improved public perception in several segments for several years. Bankruptcy isn't going to help matters, but hopefully when they get there, they don't rest on their laurels and let the competition pass them back.

"The thirstier V6 with all-wheel-drive returned 21.8 under mixed use"
not with a leaden foot, don't believe it.
"and the four-cylinder with all-wheel drive managed 23 MPG."
unless your "mixed" is much different than mine, don't believe it.

Are you accusing GM of fiddling with the on board computer?

Besides, a Forester doesn't get this good of mileage. One way to do that is to lower rotating mass in things like the transmission and differentials.
Most buyers in this segment aren't interested in towing, anyway.
Just FYI, I'd probably still buy the Forester.
