    Actually, I 'll make my money selling a 500HP generator that fits in the unused space under the hood. For people that want to live 'Off the Grid', you understand.

    They're also making a generator vehicle available. You'll be able to plug into the generator vehicle, which will follow you, whenever you have to travel long distances. Thereby eliminating the need to purchase more extension cords.

    The generator vehicle will actually be a Toyota, probably a Prius. It won't be able to keep up with the blistering speeds of the electric ZR1, but increased range is the goal.

    @aurora40: They don't have a high top speed because they are using a 1-speed gearbox, as the 2-speed had a lot of trouble taking the strain of full torque from 0 mph. And I wouldn't really call them "slow" because of it either - they run the quarter in the 11s. For rough comparison, that's within half a second of the Enzo, Murcielago, Carrera GT and SLR McLaren.

    This is what happens when you get your funding from Pelosi.

    I hear the reason why they are killing the Viper is because it didn't have enough usable surface area for solar panels.

    @engineerd the Preview-free edition: Since when did you get on a rampage to turn this site into one full of your BS politics?

    I love cars (I may even want a Viper GTS), but fuels other than petroleum are going to be needed in the long term. Alternative energies help our national security, our safety, and our economy (do you see any other part of the economy growing). Hell, I want better electric cars for all the people who hate driving, so there's more petrol for me to go to the track.

    So what's up with the lame criticism of anything innovative? I'm really sorry that electric cars, in their first 20 years, aren't quite as good as chemical fuel, with well over 100 years of development behind them. Sneering doesn't do any good. People who look forward will be the ones who save this country for your children while you sit on the sidelines whining about them.

    @imag: Pot. Kettle. Black.

    Look at the history of the automobile and the internal combustion engine. You'll find that other sources of fuel were used initially, but petrol-based fuels offer the most bang of the buck. Why do you think we are still using it?

    Unless you think it's a conspiracy by the oil companies.

    @engineerd the Preview-free edition: I don't think it's a conspiracy, and I do think it's the best "bang for the buck". I don't think anyone, electric car promoters included, would argue that simple chemical energy pulled out of the ground is cheap. That said, if you factored in the cost of our recent Middle East excursion into the price of the gallon of gas, the savings wouldn't look quite so hot (and I'll bet you actually bought into that WMD thing too).

    Bang for the buck aside, we're going to have to come up with something other than petroleum at some point (unless you all think there's an unlimited supply of oil). My point is that all those commuters and people who don't enjoy driving don't need to be wasting petroleum that should be saved for what it's really good for - high output, great-sounding, tire-smoking cars for people who appreciate them.

    KaptKaos - I'm trying to see in my original post where I mentioned a 20 year timeframe for running out of oil. Where are your critical reading skills? I'm saying that it will eventually run out - if you don't believe that oil will ever run out, that's fine, but I've got some stock I'd like to sell you. When I talk about "saving the country" I'm talking about the aforementioned three points - national security, safety, and economy. Developing alternative energies promotes all three.

    @imag: Kaos was obviously referring to your comment about saving the country for your children--generation=about 20 years.
    I am on the Kaos side here too because I am sick of hearing how vital green/electric cars are when a) the economy needs something now, not 2 to 5 to an infinite number of years out and b) these same smug politicians are shaking their fingers at Detroit. Who do they think is going to make the sunshine cars for them?
