When these first launched, people just stopped and stared at them because it had been so long in the US since anything like it had rolled out; clean, simple design, classic. Of course, you get to a certain age and you're not sure how long it would take you to get in and out of one, and how much creaky knees, grunting and fat shifting it would take, up to and including the Jaws of Life.
@Novaload Misses Murilee: All of which make me more likely to get one. Now if they could just lose that smiley face front fascia... It's like that muscular tennis player at the club, whom you admire in her little skirt, but can't stand when she is constantly exhibiting that vapid smile in all sorts of inappropriate places.
Am I the only one amused by the fact that even their babied, mostly-for-display, fourteenth off the line NA has a hood that doesn't line up with the headlights just like everyone else's NA?
@Skunky: You can pull the edges of the headlight doors up by hand to get the gaps better. I learned this when Tom Matano, one of the NA chief designers, did it on my Miata when I interviewed him for a magazine story.
@theeastbaykid: I've done that, also one old dude at a local Miata meet massaged (the only word that can describe what he did) my hood to unwarp it slightly, so my car isn't as bad as most, but it's still noticeable. I also have to push down on the back passenger side of it after having it open to get it flat with the fender.
The fun of dealing with the price of weight-savings. :)
The ignorant, immature side of me says "GET A HUMMER" but the sensible, lover-of-lightweight-agility side says "I WANT ONE. This is too much for me to handle.

@c0de: Personally I'm irritated by the fact that they keep showing it off without ever having offered it. I'd rather be driving a coupe version of my NA. I mostly put up with the soft top until I can get ahold of a colour matching hardtop with defrost.
I really like the facelift; it now looks a little less Walrus-ey. I wonder if there is going to be a 20Ae edition, like they did to celebrate the 10th birthday?
I sort of hope not. Mazda was getting downright Mustang-esque with the special edition Miatas for a while.

The current hardtop convertible probably makes Mazda think there's no longer a need for a fixed-roof version. That appears to be the case with the Z4.
