Why? Because we've been working in conjunction with PickupTrucks.com to bring you a full blown comparison on the 2009 models of every half-ton truck currently for sale in the 'merican market and here it is. It's got all the numbers on towing, handling, braking and acceleration — everything a serious truck buyer could ever need. Frankly, that's the easy part. The subjective determination of which one's the best? That's harder to nail down, but it's what we're here for.

2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Auto Cross

2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Braking Challenge Results

2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Drag Strip Acceleration Results

2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Towing Results

The competitors represent some of the best engineering from the minds of both Detroit and Japan, entrants this year include the 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500, the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, the 2009 Ford F-150, GMC Sierra 1500, 2009 Nissan Titan, and the 2008 Toyota Tundra. Competition has driven the capabilities of trucks forward in such a way that this modern crop will do more than their forebears could even conceive. However, this relentless march of capability has left us at a point where numbers no longer relate to real world usability and as such the competitors have begun to differentiate. The Ram with its new focus on ride and handling, the Titan is a bit more athletic, the F-150 is the heavy hauler, which leaves the GM twins as the remaining set of do-alls in a crowd of specialists.

Crowning A Champion>

We're going to come right out and say reviewing trucks is, in a way, a bit silly. Trucks, and specifically the half-ton truck segment, are frequented by some of the most loyal product buyers in the world. Magazines and websites opining passionately on the newest offerings don't really matter for these buyers. Reviews speak primarily in this segment to first-time truck buyers, and these days those are few and far between.

But, that being said, we must crown a winner. If we go by the numbers, it's the 2009 Ford F-150 that emerges as the winner when balancing capabilities against performance, finishing at or near the top in every category. But the absolutes of the statistics leaves out the subjective feel of these trucks and ignores that people buy them for different reasons.

But, saying the Ford is the best of the bunch is simply unfair. Is it the most well-rounded? Yes. But what about the most fun to drive? Certainly not. Is it the best styled? That's up to you. Does it have the best interior? Nope. So why is it the best? It just does everything well. The F-150 is, for lack of a better term, the working man's truck. The new F-series offers the greatest capabilities and the best long-term value resting on top of a long history of accolades. It really is a great pickup, but that's not to say it's everybody's cup of tea.

Then there's the Nissan Titan, which objectively scores in last place among the competition. If we were to build a truck for the person who occasionally needed the capabilities of a truck, wanted something incredibly entertaining on the street, offered reasonable fuel economy and a no-nonsense interior. We'd be hard pressed to build something more fitting than the Titan. Think Nissan Altima in truck form.

That's not to say that nobody wants a monstrously big pickup able to out-tow almost everything, rides like an old Cadillac and has an interior you can live with if you don't look too closely at the details. That would be a slot perfect for the Tundra. A truck so good at doing its job you actually overlook it as trying too hard and delivering where it almost doesn't count anymore.

And what of the Silverado and GMC Sierra? They run down the same assembly line, but have vastly different characters. The Silverado finishes a close second to the the F-150 by the numbers and, depending on what you're looking for, could be a better truck. The GMC feels better but somehow doesn't reflect so in the scoring. In fact, when pressed to make an overall choice, we'd be in a pickle to choose the Titan or the Sierra, the two "losers" in the field. Goes to show how much personal preference plays into the decision.

Anyway, if there's one thing we learned over our two day pickupgasm, it's this — there's a truck out there for everyone who wants one. Unfortunately, there's just not that many people who want them right now.

<![CDATA[New Ford F-150, Dodge Ram Split Confusing Texas Truck Awards]]> Considering the tremendous capabilities and competency displayed by the 2009 Ford F-150, it's anything but a surprise the truck has been awarded the Truck of Texas title by the Texas Auto Writers Association, making it the sixth year in a row Ford has owned those bragging rights. It was a good year for Ford and no doubt, cost-responsible champagne will be flowing. However, we're definitely confused by this next part. Apparently TAWA also awarded the 2009 Dodge Ram "Full-size Truck of Texas," something which seems to directly contradict the idea of awarding the F-150 the "Truck of Texas."

The "Truck of Texas" award is given at the end of a juried voting process following an event lovingly referred to as the the Texas Truck Rodeo. Ford also took home awards for "Truck-Line of Texas," "Best SUV of Texas" with the Expedition King Ranch (which we didn't even know existed), and "CUV of Texas," (apparently a fairly new category) with the Ford Flex. But that's where things stop making sense.

Considering the F-150 is, you know, full-size and all, we're still confused with how Dodge towed away the full-size award. Then, just to pour gas on the conflagration of bragging rights confusion, the Dodge RamBox was awarded "Outstanding Truck Feature." So, we have a the F-150 as the "Truck of Texas" but apparently its not full-sized enough to be awarded the "Full-size Truck of Texas," nor does it have the best feature, both awards going to the Ram. Right. They sure do things strange down there in Texas, don't they? [Detroit Free Press]

<![CDATA[2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie: First Drive]]> The folks at Chrysler have been making a lot of waves on the sea of trucks with their non-traditional approach to the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. Instead of leaving well-enough alone, for 2009 Dodge has re-done quite a bit — revamping the rear end with coil (rather than leaf) springs, rethought what a truck bed could do with the Rambox storage system and restyled the interior. Aside from the newly reskinned body, it's largely these three features which Chrysler hopes will differentiate the new Ram from its full-size truck competition, but as we all know, a truck is more than just the sum of its parts.

For us, a truck has always been about work. If it can't do what it was designed to do, there's something deeply flawed. With that in mind, let's take a look at the six-foot bed on the Laramie we tested. Dropping the tailgate, even sitting on 20" wheels, it rests right about thigh height; perfect for getting things off the ground yet not so high it's a problem for lift-over. The cargo box comes from the factory naked, without a bed mat or spray-in liner. The new Ram's bed walls have lost the normal wheel well bumps in favor of vertical walls, giving them space for one of the Ram's newest features. It's called the Rambox, a lockable, weather-sealed set of little trunks on either side of the bed. It's a pretty great idea from the perspective of utility. You can toss power tools, backpacks full of gear, a couple bags of groceries, ice with tasty beverages (and then drain the water, there are rubber drain plugs) — really, whatever you want in there and not have it rolling around in the cab. Our only beef with it is caused by the Federal government. Since it's an enclosed, latching space, they had to build in a fluorescent t-bar pull handle to release the lid in case, you know, a kid somehow manages to wedge themselves in the Rambox. Somehow.

Inside, the Ram gets things done just as Rams have been doing since they revolutionized the truck market in the ‘90s — with smart design and good ergonomics. Our Lariat was equipped with a column shifter and an origami folding bench seat — the center arm rest opens for a decent-sized, flat storage area, but it also folds up to create a seat and then the center seat bottom also folds up and reveals a second storage area underneath. It's even got bins under the floor in the back underneath the carpets — not really designed to carry contraband, but useful nonetheless. The Ram has more cubbyholes and storage doodads than an IKEA megastore. The back seats are quite comfortable as well, with a DVD player in the back to keep your annoying friends, small children or our Editor-in-Chief quiet and a 60/40 split seat which folds up to allow a flatish load floor. The rear seat doesn't fold as easily as GM's twin GMT-900 pickups, but it's a commendable effort. The wood and chrome trim a decent synthetic wood and induces no complaints (other than it looks better on the doors than on the dash), fit and finish are quite good and all the gadgetry mechanisms feel like they'll stand up to years of abuse.

But that interior stuff is for the birds when your talkin' work, right? What about the powertrain? Our test truck was equipped with a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 good for 380 HP and 404 lb-ft of torque, no slouch to say the least, with a five-speed automatic transmission sending the power to the part-time four wheel drive system, complete with a 4.10 final drive. Turn off the traction control and it'll roast the tires with little complaint, but what about with a trailer?

Loaded down with a 6500 LB trailer, and set for "Tow/Haul" mode, which changes the shift points higher up the rev range; the truck pulls off on the drag strip without a whiff of burden. Heck, even up a massive 7.2% grade on a local automakers test facility, the Dodge pulls like a freight train. The going gets slow after about 55 mph on a grade like that, but unless you're drag racing with your boat up to the continental divide, you shouldn't have a problem.

To top off the testing we ventured into the realm of the ridiculous but ridiculously entertaining — autocrossing this full-sized pickup truck. Yes, we tossed it into a course containing a high-speed slalom, tight corners, staggered surface conditions, moose-avoidance test, and some devious chicanery. The Ram, with its coil springs in the rear, proved quite tossable. In the slalom, it managed acceptable speeds but would understeer mightily if pushed too far, with traction control turned off; the throttle could be used to manage the slalom a bit better. Panic braking was delivered confidently and the ABS feedback was smooth. Sweeping corners where met with a planted feel but the chassis could be upset with a bit of sawing on the wheel. We noticed some reluctance from the throttle when coming out of particularly nasty corners, but when the traction control was disabled, tail-out fun was only a pedal tap away. When not being tossed about violently, the Ram had a markedly smooth road character, lacking the bouncy feel trucks have been known for. The steering has a pretty average turning ratio and manages to be firm yet invisible. It's certainly not sporty but for a vehicle of this size, it'll get the heartbeat racing if you're silly enough to go racing in it.

Despite the recent downturn in full-sized truck sales it's hard to argue against the utility of the pickup, especially in crew cab configuration, it's a vehicle with unparalleled capabilities and flexibility. Try hauling the whole family, a week's worth of groceries, and a cubic yard of fill dirt in your Accord. Then do it uphill, while towing a trailer. Good luck. Especially with today's deals on pricing, the Ram offers a strong option for those looking for the latest and greatest with a HEMI badge on the side, but more than that it offers solid storage innovation and a comfortable, quiet cabin with plenty of room for four, even six in a pinch. It has the sort of the paired-down luxury plus high capability that truck buyers have come to expect, along with new features they'll be happy to adopt.

<![CDATA[2009 Dodge Ram, Reviewed]]> We haven't had a chance in the saddle of the new 2009 Dodge Ram yet, but PickupTrucks.com guru Mike Levine had a chance to review and test drive pretty much every single version of the new hauler from the Ram-headed brand. Mike's put together a pretty exhaustive look at the whole lineup of all new Ram pickups, and what's his verdict?

"After driving several Ram models in a variety of scenarios, we're still as enthusiastic about the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 as we were when it was first reveled at the Detroit auto show. Most half-ton truck buyers don't need three-quarter-ton towing and hauling capability in their pickups, and we think most people will find the improved ride comfort a more-than-fair tradeoff for trailering and payload ratings that equal what the Ram could do in 2008."

Sounds to us like Dodge is making a laser-light-like move directly at the half-ton market — maybe the remaining engineers over at Chrysler have the right idea after all. Head on over to PickupTrucks.com to read all about it — and take a run through the gallery below to see it.

<![CDATA[2009 Dodge Ram Pricing To Start At $22,170]]> Chrysler's plan to move the 2009 Dodge Ram off lots in this era of high gas prices seems to revolve partially around lowering the starting price to just $22,170, which is almost $1,000 less than the current starting price for a Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab. That low starting price comes with an increase in features on the interior, a more aerodynamic design and the RamBox, a reflection of the Charmin-soft truck market. The Ram Quad starts at a competitive $26,225 and the Ram Crew 1500 is priced from $32,530. If you want all the toys, you can get the Dodge Ram Laramie Ram Crew 1500 4x4 with the 5.7-Liter Hemi for $44,140. We're still wondering whether a competitive price and the promise of RamBox will be enough to move trucks — especially considering the new F-150s right around the corner, and nobody knows what to expect out of pricing for it. <![CDATA[Detroit Auto Show: Slow-Moving Steer Steal the Show From the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500]]>

As we told you earlier — the point of the Chrysler press conference was the unveil of the new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. But the reason everyone was really outside on a blustery n' cold overcast morning in Detroit was Dodge's running of the cows down Washington Ave. outside of Cobo Hall. Yes, we were there and yes, we caught it on tape and here it is for you to show — without all of the trick truck action. Why? Because for Jason Vines Chrysler, sometimes the sizzle is the steak.

<![CDATA[Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 Revealed Amid Crowd of Cows]]> Here it is folks, the crowd of cows has parted — more on that later — to reveal the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. It's a double-horned blast of new truck-love from the car company owned by Cerberus. As we've told you before the new pickup's got all sorts of horn-y hotness like the RamBox cargo management system available in the crew cab which includes a weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage bin built into each of the bed rails — with a total of 8.6 cubic feet of space. That's enough room to hold up to 10 cases of 12-ounce beverages — we'll let you choose which beverage in your RamBox, but we'd choose bottles of Bell's Oberon. But there's even more drink storage locations — like the "store in the floor" storage bins with removable liners, big enough for ten 12-ounce beverages and ice. But why are we still talking? Here's the live reveal and the official press release after the jump.

Dodge has been building trucks since1917. Throughout its storied history, Dodge introduced a number of innovative trucks - the original "Suburban," aerodynamic Airflow-model trucks and the ultra-capable Power Wagon. But it was in 1994 that Dodge introduced a revolutionary Ram in the light-duty pickup market, with its "big rig" styling and iconic crosshair grille.

"We put a truck on the market that tripled our market share," said Ralph Gilles, Vice President - Jeep®/Truck Design Studio, Chrysler LLC. "Our design was polarizing - people loved it or hated it. But the people who loved it, bought it. They still do, because Dodge Ram continues to stand out from the herd of 'me-too' trucks."

For the redesign of its all-new, next-generation Ram, Dodge pulled out all the stops.

"Our mandate was to make a quantum leap and add even more voltage to Ram," said Scott Kunselman, Vice President - Body-on-Frame Product Team. "Our all-new 2009 Dodge Ram is a game-changer in terms of capability, convenience, craftsmanship and safety."

Capability

In addition to the new-generation 5.7-liter HEMI which produces 380 hp (283 kW) and 404 lb.-ft. (548 N·m) of torque, the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram offers a 4.7-liter V-8 providing 310 horsepower (231 kW) and 330 lb.-ft. (447 N·m) of torque, and a 3.7-liter V-6 generating 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N·m) of torque; a six-speed manual transmission and four- and five-speed automatic transmissions; part-time and on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer cases; and 3.21, 3.55, 3.92 and 4.10 axle ratios.

Equipped with the new HEMI, the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram R/T regular-cab 4x2 model with a short bed and 4:10 gears blasts to best-in-class performance of 0-60 mph in under 7 seconds.

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram is offered in regular cab, Quad Cab® and crew cab, with three box lengths: 8-foot (regular cab), 6-foot-4-inches (regular cab and Quad Cab), and a new-for-2009 box length of 5-foot-7-inches (crew cab). Five trim levels are available, each with a unique appearance: ST, SLT, TRX, Sport, and the top-of-the-line Laramie.

An improved frame design incorporating high-strength steel supports an all-new, first-in-segment, multi-link coil spring rear suspension that improves ride and handling characteristics without sacrificing payload (up to an estimated 1,840 pounds) and towing capability (up to an estimated 9,100 pounds).

Convenience

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram Crew 1500 features an available first-in-segment RamBox cargo management system that provides weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage compartments integrated into both fender sides for effortless access and convenience. Each box holds up to 4.3 cubic feet of whatever - such as five cases (120 cans) of 12-ounce beverages.

The RamBox system includes a bed divider/2-foot bed extender for oversize loads and a rail system with sliding, adjustable cleats for infinitely adjustable tie-down capability. The 2009 Dodge Ram's tailgate features a standard assist feature that reduces the effort needed to raise and close the tailgate.

Another new segment-first innovation for the 2009 Dodge Ram Crew 1500 is a pair of "store in the floor" bins with removable liners that offer even more versatile storage - large enough for ten 12-ounce beverages and ice.

There are many other convenient storage locations throughout the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram including a large upper glove box, map pockets in door panels and a configurable center console. All in all, there are nearly twice as many storage locations in the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram than were in the previous model.

Technically sophisticated, yet simple-to-navigate electronic and infotainment choices include MyGIG Multimedia Infotainment System with 30-gigabyte hard drive, navigation system, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system available in the Quad Cab and crew cab. Also available is first-in-segment live SIRIUS Backseat TV™ and segment-first surround-sound audio.

Other premium amenities include first-in-segment heated and ventilated front seats, available heated rear seats, first-for-Dodge heated steering wheel, one-touch up/down driver and passenger windows, automatic-on headlamps and dual-zone automatic temperature control - a first for Dodge Ram.

Craftsmanship

In addition to the exterior, the all-new interior of the 2009 Dodge Ram stands out with a renewed emphasis on craftsmanship expressed in premium interior appointments including six-ring instrumentation, redesigned controls, chrome accents, premium seating with improved bolsters and two-tone upholstery. An automatic-transmission floor shifter, incorporated into a configurable center console, is available for the first time in a Dodge Ram. All 2009 Dodge Ram interiors are significantly upgraded with "soft-touch" materials that feature industry-first two-tone technology and premium fit and finish. Full-width contrasting stitching is offered on soft-touch instrument panels for Sport and Laramie models.

On the exterior, the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram features a redesigned aluminum hood with a large power bulge and a forward-canted grille, imparting a "head down, ready to charge" attitude, while front and rear bumpers wrap around each body side. The rear bumper on HEMI-equipped models is radiused over chromed dual exhaust tips - a first in light-duty pickups. Attractive 20-inch wheels are available in three styles. Sills are pulled down to cover frame rails for a premium appearance. Badges are three-dimensional, rather than decals, and are designed to stand out. The sculpted Ram's-head badge on the tailgate is 250 percent larger than the previous badge.

Safety

On the safety and security front, the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram offers more than 30 active and passive safety features, including standard front and rear side-curtain air bags with Enhanced Accident Response System, knee bolsters, seat-belt pre-tensioners, Anti-lock Brake System, BeltAlert® System, and Electronic Stability Control; and available adjustable pedals, ParkSense® Rear Park Assist and ParkView® Rear Back-up Camera.

Manufacturing

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram will be built in two locations: Quad Cab and Ram Crew 1500 models will be built at the Warren (Mich.) Assembly Plant, and regular cab and Ram Crew 1500 models will be built at the St. Louis North Assembly Plan in Fenton, Mo.

Last year, Dodge introduced the all-new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan with 35 new or improved features including the newest innovation, the Swivel 'n Go™ seating system. Dodge is entering key European volume segments with Nitro, Caliber and Avenger. The all-new 2009 Dodge Journey will debut this year, and will be available outside North America in both left- and right-hand drive in mid-2008. And later this year, Dodge will introduce its modern muscle car, the all-new Dodge Challenger. For the 2010 model year, Dodge will offer the all-new Dodge Ram with an advanced two-mode hybrid system.

<![CDATA[Detroit Auto Show: Mooo, Cow!]]> Despite our reveal a few days back — Dodge's now ready to officially reveal the new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 in a few minutes and we're here live. As we've told you before, the new Ram will be revealed in a few moments amid a stampede of rampaging Texas longhorn steer — as seen above in their holding pen on Congress down the street from Cobo. And by stampede we mean it'll probably be the 125 of them docilely meandering up Congress Ave, around the corner and up toward the press risers set up here in front of the hall. But — think of how much fun it'd be if a few of them went a bit astray? And did we mention the press risers are bright red? Oh, the potential humanity. In the meantime we're going to listen to CEO Bob "The Builder" Nardelli — we wonder if we'll see him and Jim Press give each other a bit of a hug. We hear some think they won't.

<![CDATA[2009 Dodge Ram 1500]]> Since those wily Mopar-lovin' bastards at Allpar and the never-lovin' Mopar aristocrats at the Times (who knew they were such trouble-makers!) have gone and dropped the cover on the new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500, we've decided to drop trou on our embargoed pictures of the new Ram-headed bull-dodging pickup truck. The newly hotted-up Ram (thanks to chief truck designer Ralph Gilles) gets a similarly new 5.7-liter Hemi V8 — giving it more horsepower than the previous generation, 380 hp. And a similar boost in torque up to 404 lb-ft. But it's not just under the hood where the Ram's seeing some monumental changes. There's also the RamBox cargo management system available in the crew cab which includes a weatherproof, lockable, illuminated and drainable storage bin built into each of the bed rails — with a total of 8.6 cubic feet of space. Also, check out that interior — suh-weet! All we've got to say is — well played Dodge. Your move Ford. Oh and yeah, we've also got a press release after the jump, but if you want the real skinny on the new Horn-y hauler, there's a pretty good site we know of with more detail than you can shake a horn at.

<![CDATA[Why Yes, It IS the 2009 Dodge Ram]]> Oh boy, heads are gonna roll in Auburn Hills. The picture we showed you earlier of what was purported to be the 2009 Dodge Ram? Guess what? It is. How do we know? Well, it came off an official Mopar Accessories web page. Oops! Somebody made a boo-boo! Now the whole world gets to see the new Ram pickup well before the official Detroit Auto Show debut. [mopar-accessories via Autoblog]

<![CDATA[2009 Dodge Ram Quad Cab]]> Looks like yet another enterprising amateur spy photographer's happened upon a heavily camouflaged 2009 Dodge Ram hitting the wide open expanses of I-75. We'll just add these shots we received from user "fordchevydodge" on the site all about the Inside News at GM to the ever-expanding list of horned hauler shots we've already seen. This time however, instead of circling the Auburn Hills Embassy Suites, this uncastrated male sheep was caught a little further South. This Quad Cab version of the Dodge heavy hauler was part of what appears to be a convoy (or is it a pride) of the trucks running the Michigan-Florida gauntlet. These particular shots show the team (or is it a pack) heading North near Atlanta. The new-for-2009 Ram's expected to be running with a few different upgrades under the hood including a new Phoenix V6 with supposedly greater power and better fuel economy, a 4.7-liter V8 or a revised Hemi — for more marketing mojo than ever before. We're expecting we'll probably see the new range of trucks grabbing life by the horns at the Chicago Auto Show at the beginning of next year.
