Yeah, ugly, but I've never let that stop me before.

I thought this car was seriously too much fun to drive. Suicidally fun to drive. I like that in a car.

So, why would I want this over a used Mazdaspeed 3?

So, as the financial apocalypse and the carpocalypse unspool, we bottom-feeding jalopniks can wait for tiny colorful plastic bits wrapped around an engine to drift down to where we can finally reach them?

    Uh, thanks but no thanks.

And if I want a car that can easily kill me, I want one that challenges me to arm wrestle and wins. I want to be outmuscled and outsmarted. I do NOT want to perish in the automotive equivalent of stepping on a skateboard the kids left in the driveway.

Are the engine and transmission really worth that kind of cash?

I gotta say, i was DEEPLY unimpressed by the SRT-4 when i drove it. Waaaaay too much torque steer, the e.diff is insufficient for that much torque, unreasonably stiff clutch, notchy (but accurate!) gearchange, 80's style turbo lag... sure it was fast on boost. But it never was on boost, and when it was it was trying to attack parked cars.

HOWEVER, those are observations I made at the $24,000 list price of the one i drove. At $16,000 or change, this car would be AMAZING. That's about what I think it's worth. At that price, it's a very tempting car. At it's real MSRP, you'd have to be out of your damn mind to buy one - especially over the Cobalt SS, HHR SS, GTI 5 door, MS3, Cooper S, etc. But at $17k or so, it's like a new Omni GLHS - which promised tons of power for tiny cash. The problem is the new SRT4 is a lot of cash. It's got TONS of power (too much, dare I say) but no refinement. At 16k who cares if it's refined?

I'd buy one at that price, for sure.

I think that sums up the Caliber SRT-4 perfectly. It's a POS lunch box that the ONLY redeeming quality is that is has tons of power!

@FuzzyPlushroom: I was actually hoping to see him get a Lorena Bobbit special, but apparently he has enough horsepower to outrun his detractors, and his foreskin remains intact. Sadly.

Its not a bad deal. Its better than the minivans some of you are secretly driving. Wait a year or two more and you'll get an even better deal. The big problem with the Caliber SRT-4 is that its a stick and their resale is terrible. Throw in the bankruptcy fears and it gets worse.

But lets face it. You can haul the kids, your crap, have fun with the car, and still avoid driving a minivan.

Hey, in ten years, this'll be a perfect LeMons car.

If you were to own this car in any kind of job requiring a sense of style, you would be fired immediately.

BTW I just bought something from a Jalop sponsor and made sure that they knew I saw their add here. Just spreading the love, spreading the love.

That car's somewhat like dating a ugly girl with a magnificent personality. You can have a wonderful time when you're alone with her, but when you go out in public and get recognized, you'll still want to "accidentally" trip her so nobody sees who you're with.
