That's the question everyone wants answered when it comes to the 2010 car/truck rendition of the Pontiac G8. And the answer is: All those inquiring minds will have to wait.

The deadline for consumers to submit names for the upcoming two-door car/truck version of the G8 sedan came and passed last week, but don't expect the winning moniker to be revealed until the end of May at the earliest, says Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson.nbsp;

Pontiac unveiled the car/truck at the New York auto show last month, and it brought to mind the days of the Chevy El Camino that last sold in the '80s. At the show, Pontiac launched a contest inviting folks to submit names for the model that reportedly will go on sale in the fall of 2009 as a 2010 model.

The reason it will take time to chose the winning moniker, Hopson said, is that more than 10,000 different names were submitted. Now the fun begins. Pontiac has to sort through all the names to weed out the goofy ones, those legally committed to another company or product, or those, which, in a foreign language, could possibly translate into swear words or, worse, into quot;Aztek.quot;

While 10,000 different names were submitted, there's no tally on just how many people submitted duplicate names. Regardless of which name is chosen, everyone who submitted a name will have his or her name tossed in a hat, and one will be pulled out and awarded one of the first copies of whatever the car/truck is named.

quot;I can confirm, however, that one of the names is El Camino, quot; Hopson said.

Hopson refused to say which names were frontrunners because Pontiac still hasn't been determined which names are the legal property of others, and which may actually be worse than heck, darn, or Aztek.

He wouldn't say how many submitted El Camino but did say that no matter which name received the most vote, that name would not automatically be picked. Marketing types— who supposedly know which names prompt people to buy or not — will still have a say on the name chosen, he said.nbsp; nbsp;

There has also been internal debate at GM whether the name of a former Chevy last sold in the '80s could or would be used on a new Pontiac.

Hold tight — we'll have to wait to find out.

<![CDATA[ Play With It: Top Seven Examples Of Automaker-Video Game Industry Love-Making In New York ]]> There's a trend I'm beginning to notice around the massive halls of auto shows: scattered among the sheet metal, booth babes and PR flacks, there's a hell of a lot of video games — both your standard issue Xbox-PlayStation3 setups as well as the more elaborate simulators. Taking a look at just a few of the many examples that appeared at the New York Auto Show this past week, I think this is more than just a way of giving journalists something to do between press conferences — it's representative of a trend. Here's our carmaker-by-carmaker breakdown of what has to be construed as either a strategy of building "appeal with the youths" — or an attempt by the car companies to distract everyone from their impending new "Second Malaise Era" with flashing lights and loud noises.

Lexus:
Lexus brought a video game setup that made me do a double-take. It wasn't big, gaudy or flashy, but it was a great partnership. Lexus had three driving simulators set up running the highly anticipated Gran Turismo 5 Prologue that's due out in mid-April. Since it was obviously a Lexus partnership, the only vehicle available to try was the Lexus IS-F. You'll get my first impressions on the game later, but it was unique how much Polyphony, the developer of the Gran Turismo series, put into this event. The first day of the show, the simulator was running a custom-build platform (meaning the developers sent out a special copy of the game just for the show), but Polyphony managed to overnight Japanese retail builds of the full game to be used on the simulators. A groggy representative told me he was up until 3 a.m. waiting for the retail build and setting up the simulators to properly work with a PlayStation 3 and the Japanese game. That a lot of midnight oil for a cross-marketing opportunity.

mcla-saleen.JPGSaleen:
Saleen didn't have the biggest or most prominent booth at the New York Auto Show, but there was definitely a strong presence, at least from the video game perspective. Saleen and Rockstar games recently announced a partnership for Midnight Club Los Angeles. This game is slated for a third or fourth quarter release this year. However, Rockstar was happy to have a setup that allowed everyone, even our intrepid senior editor, the opportunity to play the game and showcase the exclusive partnership with Saleen right now. This was one of the more interesting video game integrations because Rockstar pulled out all of the stops to get the game to the show and promote both their new game; the Saleen Mustang S302 Extreme was also the star of the game. The game looks pretty good, and will probably keep people hanging around the Saleen booth. Obviously, the better a car comes off in a game, the more likely it is that the excitement embodied in an automotive brand will rub off on gamers.

subaru-gt4pro.JPGSubaru:
Subaru has been at it with the video games for quite some time. This year, as at many past trade shows, they featured triple-screen simulators running Gran Turismo 4 Prologue. There were three simulators available, and a decent sized area of the Subaru booth was roped off to accommodate waiting lines. Subaru seems to have figured out that the game both keeps people hanging around the booth and, because it showcases the WRX STi, reinforces Subaru's devotion to motorsports. We're not just for hippies in Vermont and families in Berkeley, the message seems to be. We're down with speed and handling as well.

tundra.JPGToyota:
Toyota deployed a slightly different gaming setup to promote its big pickup truck. The Tundra Game had the look and feel of Paperboy and served as more of an advergame than something that was legitimate fun. Nevertheless, it shows that Toyota went to the effort of hiring designers and developers to create something game-like to include in the Toyota trucks booth, thereby catching a ride on the trend.

vw-gti.JPGVolkswagen:
VW brought a nausea-inducing game. A driver's seat and steering wheel were attached to platform that spun around as the unlucky participant piloted a GTi. Spinouts could have induced vomiting. Note to the board of directors: You've got to play this video-game gambit right—causing potential customers to retch isn't the way to go.

statefarm.JPGState Farm Insurance:
State Farm brings their driving simulator to almost every show. It's a full-sized rig that sits on actuators, mimicking all of the bumps and bruises of real-world driving. Also included in the booth were three individual driving simulators running the Nascar 2003 game, unfortunately. State Farm continues to promote driving safe, but it doesn't seem to know that there are some new games out there. Oh well,"A" for effort, and for being something of a pioneer in this trade-show sub-genre.

jeep-wii.JPGJeep:
The Jeep booth boasted two Nintendo Wii setups, running a skateboard game. There's no explanation why, but it seems that the Jeep booth is so boring that event-planning staff figure they need Wiis to keep people entertained. There's a sub-trend here, as Wii seems to show up in a lot of boring media-oriented contexts these days. I guess journalist have a lot of free time to perfect their Guitar Hero skills.

Conclusion
It's apparent that auto-related video games can be a big part of any enthusiast's life, so I'm happy to see Polyphony and Rockstar go balls to the wall by getting involved in the auto industry and recognizing the natural cross-branding and promotional opportunities at trade shows. And I would like to see more companies getting involved. How about Logitech setting up a booth demonstrating the wheels and pedals that they offer? What about seeing some of the other big racing-game developers? Burnout and Forza are a couple racing series that seemed to be absent from the show.

Sure, the L.A. Auto Show will never replace E3, or at least what used to be E3. But the video game industry is definitely beginning to link itself more closely with the auto industry—and the car biz is recognizing that hooking up with the massively profitable-game industry can provide it with a variety of marketing opportunities. Car shows tend to be about actual experiences; you finally see the cars in the flesh, as opposed to in photos or on videos. But this actual experience is fairly static, because the vehicles don't do anything except sit there and look pretty. Bringing them to life in a virtual realm can only help.

<![CDATA[ Ford Shows Off Demolished Taurus As Safety Movie Theater? ]]> What to do with all of those cars smashed in federal and IIHS crash testing? In theory, you could take them back for further study to help improve safety for future vehicles. Of course, that would mean wasting an advertising opportunity. And while we prefer the RoboCop Taurus, we'll admit that showing a wrecked version of your car isn't the worst way to show off that the only major hazard that comes with driving a new Taurus is death-by-boredom. Press release after the jump.

CRASH-TESTED FORD TAURUS SHOWS SAFETY LEADERSHIP

NEW YORK, March 18, 2008 - Most cars at auto shows are highly polished and gleaming, except one - a Ford Taurus that crashed into a 1 million pound wall at 35 mph en route to the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Deliberately.

Ford wants New York International Auto Show visitors to see how the Taurus - rated 'Top Safety Pick' by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) - fared in a 35 mph crash test. Positioned in the same place occupied by the seated crash-test dummy, showgoers view video of the actual crash test.

"We want people to see what happens in the blink of an eye," said Stephen Kozak, North American safety chief engineer for Ford Motor Company. "We want to open people's eyes that not all cars are created equal when it comes to safety. There is a difference and we want to show why Taurus is the safest rated large sedan sold in America."

A car crash can literally happen in the blink of an eye - 100 milliseconds, or about a tenth of a second, from start to finish. In that brief span of time, safety belt pretensioners tighten the belt, frontal air bags are inflated to the appropriate level, and the forces of the crash are being deflected by the structure of the vehicle designed specifically to help protect occupants inside.

The crashed Taurus test car is expected to be a popular display at the show - and not just because it looks so different from all the other vehicles. More than 50 percent of car buyers call safety a major purchase consideration.

The crash test was conducted at Ford's testing facilities in Dearborn, Mich., prior to the show. The company conducts hundreds of crash tests and thousands more simulated computer tests on a yearly basis for its vehicles.

"A crash can happen to the best of us, and it may happen before you have time to react," Kozak said. "So we believe the best way to react is to buy the car equipped to help protect you when the unexpected happens."

Taurus models equipped with optional AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control have earned the highest available rating of five-stars for rollover resistance from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Taurus earned five-star ratings from NHTSA for both driver and front passenger in a frontal crash test and five stars for both the driver and rear-seat passenger in a side impact crash test.

The IIHS also gives Taurus top marks - "Good" ratings - for frontal, side and rear impacts.

Key features of the Ford Taurus safety story include:

* Safety CanopyTM, Ford's exclusive side impact protection system, featuring side curtain airbags that helps protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollovers and side impact crashes. The curtains are designed to slip between the occupant and the side window. The Safety Canopy is designed to stay inflated for several seconds, as rollover crashes often last much longer than side impact crashes.
* SPACE, Ford's Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement architecture. SPACE is designed to help protect occupants using a complex configuration of strategically placed long steel rails and square tubes under the car body, along the vertical door posts (or "B pillars"), in between the front and rear seats, and along the roof lines (or "A pillars"). The rails are designed to bend and the tubes compress in a severe crash; this creates 10 different "crush zones" all over the car to help channel crash forces away from the occupants inside.
* AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control system can predict the vehicle's intentions using a sensor to detect and measure oversteer and yaw by monitoring the vehicle's speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle. When the system senses wheel slip, engine torque is reduced and braking is applied where needed to help keep the car tracking safely on its intended path.
* Ford's Belt-Minder®, a safety belt reminder technology for the driver and front passenger that takes over after the initial safety belt reminder stops chiming. If the driver or front passenger remains unbuckled, the system chimes and flashes a warning lamp for six seconds every 30 seconds for five minutes or until the driver buckles up, whichever comes first.
* Personal Safety SystemTM, a suite of seven protection technologies working together as a system to help protect occupants, including dual-stage front air bags and occupant classification.

<![CDATA[ BMW's Busted Balls of Bruce? ]]> Ze Germans are all about über-precision. So why is it that they don't even have a properly functioning set of perpetual motion balls? We found these at the BMW stand at the New York Auto Show, and our first thought was the Bavarians had busted their balls. But it turns out that these are supposedly part of some ironic demonstration of some sort of BMW safety somethingoranother. It's a bit confusing, but we still think the SLR 722 GTR parking struggle over at the Mercedes stand was a bit more embarrassing.

<![CDATA[ The Iconic GTR Roadster: All About The Details ]]> At a glance, the Iconic GTR looks like just another Cobra replica. But taking a closer look you realize it's the bespoke details that make it special. Shiny toggle switches, plush leather, jewel-like gauges, a roll-bar that conceals LED turn signals with a full spectrum of color adjustment; it all makes the GTR feel like a creation made for winning the Riddler Award. But don't think that it's all show and no go — the body is all carbon-fiber with ground effects that help make over 500 pounds of downforce. Open the power-operated bonnet you'll find a F1-style front suspension and the heart of the beast, a 800 HP naturally-aspirated 6.9-liter V8. And that's not just some crate motor, it's a hand-assembled custom with a unique fuel-injection system.

Iconic Motors says that this is just the beginning for their company, even hinting at the possibility of a future electric supercar, but time will tell. For now, the planned run of 100 GTR Roadsters will be sold for about $600,000 a pop. That may seem like quite a lot if you're comparing it to a fiberglass kit car; but if you look at it through the eyes of the carnauba-drenched, mirrors to show off the chassis, custom hot rod commissioners, it all makes sense.

Long Island, N.Y. - The GTR Roadster by Iconic Motors will make its world auto show debut at the New York International Auto Show. A truly groundbreaking automobile, the Iconic GTR boasts 18 pending U.S. patents, a chassis made of high strength chromoly, a carbon fiber passenger tub and carbon fiber body panels, and a high performance air management system with under body inverted carbon fiber wings designed to generate more than 500 pounds of down force at 175 miles per hour.

The Iconic GTR's 1950s inspired body design features many panels constructed of a poly silicate matrix sandwiched between two layers of carbon fiber that results in an incredibly strong light weight and rigid body. With its carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb reinforced chassis having over 20,000 pounds of torsional rigidity, the GTR offers a level of performance handling that rivals that found in many modern race cars.

"I have wanted to build a car that combines the latest innovative technologies with the most exquisite detailing, design and all out performance since the day I began reading car magazines as a kid," said Claudio Ballard, the inventor and visionary behind the GTR Roadster. "Everything from the custom-built, heated and cooled carbon fiber seats to the computerized gas cap that slides open like the glass on a moon roof embodies my vision."

From its luxurious leather and suede hand-stitched interior to its hand-assembled 420-cid/800-horsepower naturally aspirated V-8 engine, the vehicle is a rolling showcase for revolutionary technology shrouded in a racecar. The entire nose clip swings up and forward to reveal the highly detailed engine compartment, showcasing a custom-fabricated engine built to super car racing standards featuring titanium valves, high strength light weight stainless and aluminum components throughout along with the very latest in high performance friction reduction technology. The patent pending shifter mechanism is specifically designed to display its inner workings as a beautiful piece of automotive artwork, and even the gauges, dashboard starter and hazard light push button switches are custom designed from stainless steel and manmade synthetic sapphire with a hardness level just below that of diamond. The dash center console has a 8-inch touch screen display utilizing the same bright-view technology found in military strike fighters and bombers for clear visibility regardless of sunlight exposure in support of its onboard GPS navigation and driver information displays.

The Iconic GTR - proudly designed, engineered and constructed using state-of-the-art computer-aided design and manufacturing technology entirely in the United States with over 99% U.S. sourced materials.

Ballard will build one hundred of these high performance pieces of rolling artwork roadsters. Priced at $600,000, his team will begin taking orders for the Iconic GTR in April with production slated to begin in Fall 2008.

<![CDATA[ Redesign The Scion Hako Concept - Win Some Scion Hats ]]> To say the Scion Hako Concept went over poorly with the Jalopnik staff would be something of an understatement. Every time we checked the front page we'd recoil in horror as the Hako scrolled past on the screen. It became the generic stake by which other cars were measured. "At least it's not the Hako" was heard more than once. Now, considering the depth of photochopping skill we see from Chrysler here on a daily basis, we're betting you guys can do better than the awkward and boxy "American vintage style" Scion touted at the New York Auto Show.

Instead of being only a contest for Photoshop whiz kids, for this one, we'll be giving bonus points to those who use the crudest software drawing package. If you send us a design using ASCII, you've got a better chance at winning than the guy using MSPaint who has a leg up on the guy using Photoshop. This is not to say the people using P-Shop can't win. Perhaps he or she uses a design completely consisting of a mosaic of kittens duplicated with the stamp tool. Be creative, be inventive, be original, and use curves, heavens knows Scion didn't. Send us your submissions via a post on this thread, or directly to myself at the address on the sidebar by Wednesday of next week. We'll cull the initial entries and let you all vote on the winner, then that lucky artist will see both of those sweet Scion hats arriving by mail for the efforts. Good luck, and may the best crappiest design win.

<![CDATA[ Jalopnik Plays Midnight Club Los Angeles ]]> After checking out the new S5S Raptor and the Dan Gurney Mustang at the Saleen stand, we decided to get behind the wheel controller and a have a test drive of a DUB-customized S302 Extreme— in the upcoming Midnight Club Los Angeles video game. We thought it was a good opportunity let our oldest most life-experienced Jalop, Matt DeBord, have a hand at the game. He knows LA pretty well, so we figured he'd have an advantage driving through the virtual city of angels. We soon found that while Matt may have life experience, he doesn't have so much experience with modern video games. Maybe we should have someone else here give the game a proper review.

Midnight Club Los Angeles is the fourth installment from the critically-acclaimed and genre-defining Midnight Club franchise. The title has sold over 12 million units worldwide and is the second largest series in the Rockstar portfolio. Consistently the highest-rated street racing franchise, Midnight Club set the standard of what an open-world racing game can be. Midnight Club Los Angeles will deliver a truly immersive racing experience that is second to none.

Developed by series creator Rockstar San Diego for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and will be released Fiscal Q4 2008.

<![CDATA[ The Trifun 1/4 Ton Truck: Three Wheels, Chinese Motor And A Dream ]]> In the "dare to dream" wing of the NY Auto Show, among the roadsters and air cars, was a pair of three-wheeled Chinese imports that are set to hit the market this year. Classified as motorcycles in most states, these lightweight vehicles offer 42 mpg fuel economy at a price just under $10K. You might think this means you'll end up with something powered by a two-cylinder chinese motor. You'd be wrong. This 1/4 ton truck gets its motivation from a 50 horsepower Delphi/GM/Wuling four-cylinder that will propel the driver to a max speed of 70 mph... assuming it doesn't catch on fire first.

And unlike the 09 Challenger SE of Spin's dreams, you can only get this with a five-speed manual. Oh, and it's got A/C, a CD player and a push-button heater. Though they claim the goal is to sell 3,000 of them, we think they're going to do ten times that. American salesmanship with Chinese quality. How can you lose?

<![CDATA[ 2009 Dodge Challenger S/E: A Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name ]]> I was wandering around the floor of the New York auto show yesterday afternoon, trying to find a free scone. No, I was looking for automotive inspiration to break the second-day malaise. I never did find the scone, but I did stumble on the 2009 Dodge Challenger S/E up on its dais. I've been thinking of nothing else for 24 hours.

The S/E isn't exactly carnival-midway material. First, it lacks the Challenger R/T's six-speed Tremec TR6060, or any other manual transmission. Second, with 250-horsepowers' worth of sad ham under its hood, the weighty S/E's zero-to-60 time is probably closer to that of a '78 Tradesman van than a 268-hp Toyota Camry SE. Can you imagine a greater humiliation than being dispatched by a middle-aged suburban bank branch manager late for her 11:15? I can, but it would involve farm animals, Irish whiskey and glossy photos.

Despite all of that - and it's quite a lot to spite — the Challenger S/E has remained foremost in my thoughts.

My obsession is mainly with intangables. The S/E on display looked simply stunning in a color approximating the classic Mopar B5 blue. It's also decked, such that it is, with 18-inch wheels and a pert lip spoiler. On paper, the car should be a no more alluring than any other rental upgrade. Nonetheless, the base Challenger projects a kind of butchness the base V6 Mustang only imagines while wearing its dad's Hathaway shirts. Despite the availability of V6 turbocharging kits, Ford's base-level pony car cannot seem to cast off the hairy sweater it's been wearing for 40+ years. The most obvious slight at the base Mustang is that it's the ultimate "secretary's car." The Challenger S/E is a secretary's car too; think Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter.

Plus, think of the practicalities. Speed isn't everything for a daily driver, a role for which the Challenger is well suited. It's roomy enough to fit two work-weary, inflation-slapped adults in the front, and accept a baby seat and a full-sized adult in the back seat. For the most part, it's sure to treat gasoline as the swiftly appreciating commodity it is. Face it kids, we all grow up, some more grudgingly than others.

And if having a car that's as slow as warm potash becomes grating, there's always a turbo kit. Maybe someday.

<![CDATA[ Down On The Staircase: Hennessey Venom 700 NM ]]> The Javits Center, home of the New York Auto Show, isn't exactly a well laid-out place (take that I.M Pei). As opposed to one or two large halls, the Javits has a lot of smaller spaces where the non-major or custom automakers are forced to put their displays. This explains why there was a Hennessey Venom 700 NM Viper just sitting underneath a staircase in a far corner of the auto show.

There weren't even any signs to indicate that this was a limited edition, $180K beast. Shiny black paint and 700 horsepower may get you into the Neiman Marcus catalog, but at the NY Auto Show it also gets you relegated to the Team Polizei corner.

<![CDATA[ Nissan Cube Coming To US, Electric Version Still A Concept ]]> The Nissan Denki Cube Concept is something you've probably already seen. In fact, you probably saw it this morning when we caught the electric Nissan Cube sunning itself in advance of its press conference. What did we learn at the press conference? Fleet-use electric vehicles by 2010 and commercial vehicles by 2012. The big news is that the LA Auto Show this fall will see the introduction of the next generation Cube for the North American market. Press release, pictures of the Denki Cube and shots of two rather unfortunately customized Cubes below.

Nissan's "Denki Cube" Electric Vehicle Concept Brings Distinctive Spirit Into Play in New York Auto Show Debut

New York City is about to get a lesson in what happens when geography meets geometry - specifically, when the world, which is round, meets the Nissan Cube, which is essentially square. The occasion is the world debut of the Nissan Denki (Japanese for "electric") Cube Concept at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

The lithium-ion battery-powered Denki Cube electric vehicle concept, which will be on public display at the Nissan exhibit at Jacob Javits Convention Center from March 21 through March 30, was created to draw attention to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.'s (NML) global environmental efforts. It also serves as a preview of Nissan's future small car strategy for the North American market, which includes plans to sell a redesigned gasoline-powered, next-generation Cube at Nissan dealers in the United States and Canada beginning in 2009.

"The Denki Cube Concept is a fun way to expose American buyers to one of Nissan's most popular home market cars at a time when fuel economy and packaging efficiency are on a lot of people's minds," said Al Castignetti, senior vice president, sales and marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. "Like the production Cube on which it is based, the Denki Cube Concept is boxy yet charming, fashionable and functional, and completely tuned in to today's needs for enjoyable efficiency."

About the Denki Cube Concept
In creating the Denki Cube Concept, the designers started with a well-defined canvas, the current-generation Nissan Cube. The iconic Cube has always been the antithesis of traditional automotive style - square, minimalist, asymmetrical and humble - yet also warm, relaxing, practical and undeniably charming. To this solid foundation, the Denki Cube adds a new EV powertrain and unique exterior and interior treatments.

The Denki Cube Concept's exterior features fresh front and rear styling treatments, including a new "electric themed" front grille design with an AC power charging port, a radical "lightning" headlight design and new bumpers and turn signal lamps. In the rear, the signature Cube asymmetrical rear quarter area (with wraparound glass on one side) has been enhanced by a new bumper with hidden taillights. The roof sheet metal has been replaced with a full fixed glass panel that enhances the interior's sense of wide-open space. The Denki Cube Concept exterior also features new door mirrors and unique 16-inch wheel covers. The finishing touch is provided by a special white pearl paint and graphics.

Inside, the Denki Cube Concept reflects the designers' intention of creating a relaxing, moving social hub, like a favorite room in an owner's house. Though the production Cube offers three rows of seating, the Denki Cube Concept offers only two rows and the wheelbase has been stretched 9.4 inches in order to better accommodate the lithium-ion battery cells. The newly designed front and second row seats are joined by a revised instrument panel with an IP-mounted shift button, a special steering wheel design and new door panel and cargo area trim.

The biggest transformation from production Cube to Denki Cube Concept is one that isn't visible - the replacement of the standard 1.3-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor and laminated lithium-ion batteries located under the floor and seats. The laminated structure and unique material technology offer more power, energy and battery stability, as well as compact size and packaging flexibility, versus conventional cylindrical batteries.

Nissan's compact lithium-ion battery technology, one of the company's traditional strengths, provides batteries with twice as much energy compared with a conventional cylindrical battery of the same type and safer operation due to the use of chemically stable spine-structured manganese for the electrode material. In order to better leverage Nissan's lithium-ion battery capabilities, a new company, Automotive Energy Supply Corp. (AESC), was jointly established with NEC Corp. and NEC Tokin Corp. - with the goal of dramatically enhancing future battery performance and reducing battery costs.

"Nissan first had an electric vehicle in the road in 1947 and has been field-testing lithium-ion batteries for more than ten years," said Castignetti. "Our ongoing goal is to dramatically enhance future battery performance while reducing battery costs."

About Nissan Green Program 2010
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.'s (NML) mid-term environmental action plan, Nissan Green Program 2010 (NGP 2010), is designed to fulfill Nissan's environmental philosophy of "symbiosis of people, vehicles and nature" and contribute to a sustainable mobile society. NGP 2010 is specifically focused on reducing CO2 emissions both from Nissan products as well as from day-to-day corporate activities.

Nissan is focused on three core areas related to the environment: reducing CO2 emissions; reducing exhaust emissions; and accelerating recycling efforts.

Highlights of Nissan Green Program 2010 include:

* Incorporating CO2 reduction as one of the key management performance indicators.
* Launch a "three-liter car" with a target of 2010; a gasoline-fueled car that runs 100 kilometers on three liters of fuel.
* Expand availability of Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFV) within the next three years.
* Launch a Nissan electric vehicle early in the next decade.
* Develop an original Nissan hybrid vehicle targeted for launch in FY2010.
* Accelerate development of plug-in hybrid technology.
* By 2010, reduce CO2 emissions from global manufacturing plants by 7% (per unit) compared to 2005.

"The Nissan Green Program 2010 provides a transparent view of Nissan's future commitments to all aspects of environmental management," said Toshiyuki Shiga, Chief Operating Officer, NML. "Nissan Green Program 2010 has been designed to address immediate challenges as well as creating the foundation towards a long-term sustainable business model."

<![CDATA[ Jalopnik Drives Hybrid Technologies Lithium-Powered Super Car ]]> Hardigree and I drove our respective red supercars at roughly the same time yesterday. While he went for the flashy Audi R8 V12 LeMans TDI Prototype and was escorted through traffic like a Russian Oil Baron by a phalanx of Audi Q7s, I hopped into the Hybrid Technologies Lithium Powered Super Car with the guy who built it. There was no top, so I enjoyed the welcome good weather—at last!—in NYC. OK, maybe the name needs a little work, but the car itself was a hoot to drive.

"Yeah, go slow over this cable tray cause the nose is so low, but in the tunnel why don't you punch it and see what it can do"—those were the orders of the cars' keeper gave. Though styling is not necessarily the car's strong point, its simplicity and performance are respectable. The car starts with a tubular space frame and adds a 78 kW direct drive, a three-phase brushless A/C motor powered by 10 maintenance-free lithium ion battery packs. Those batteries will charge by way of 120V power in 8-10 hours and run for 100 miles on a charge. All of that is shrouded under a completely carbon-fiber body, which encases leather-clad seating. The whole shebang weighs in at 2300 lbs. and considering electric motors make max torque at zero RPM, this thing scoots pretty well. 0-60 will pass in about 5 seconds, and the car has a top speed around 120 mph.

Now that the formalities are out of the way, we're ready to go out on a limb and say this is a better concept car than Die-Hardigree-with-a-Vengence's obnoxious Audi. Lets look at it objectively. The Audi's glorious V12 turbo diesel has been neutered and runs at a mere 250 HP; the electric car runs wide open with full power off the line. The Audi is constructed of soft, malleable aluminum; the electric car is fabricated of a race-car style tube frame and delicious crunchy carbon fiber. The seats are firm but nonadjustable, a clever strategy to simplify operation and cut a substantial amount of waeight compared to the leather ensconced, powered Audi helms. Whereas weight like that forces the audi to add baloney like power steering and power brakes, the little pop top is all direct connect. the steering is heavy as are the brakes, but that just makes you feel like Juan Fangio in his '57 win at Monaco. Sure it's simple and unrefined, but that means it's also simple and unrefined. The utter lack of pretension and the delightfully direct nature of the car was refreshing. Topping it off, we folded in behind the mob squad surrounding the Audi while in traffic, and we were the ones who got the natives asking about it. Clearly, the electric emerges triumphant. [Hybrid Technologies]

<![CDATA[ How Many Guys Does It Take To Park A Mercedes McLaren SLR 722 GTR? ]]> What do you do with an SLR 722 GTR? Yes, its a race car; but there's no real competitive series for it to race in. And you can't drive the GTR on the public street. So the only thing it's really good for is showing off, which apparently it isn't very good at either. Check out the video and you'll see just how many guys it takes to park a SLR 722 GTR at the NY Auto Show. Oh and also, they broke it. Epic fail.

<![CDATA[ Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans Diesel Prototype ]]> Our auto show coverage slogan is "always say yes." This time we said yes to a first drive of the Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans concept car, which looks ravishing in the same brilliant red paint scheme it wore to Geneva. But who really cares about paint? We were looking forward to stretching this one-of-a-kind vehicle to the limits. And by stretching it out we mean doing our best not to destroying this invaluable prototype by propelling it into a pot hole.

To make sure we didn't kill ourselves or, more importantly, the car, Audi provided three black Q7's driven by ex-cops for escort. I suddenly knew what it was like to be a Russian oligarch. Audi's best prototype protection feature is Uwe Haller, the car's affable project manager and my navigator. The car is his baby and he managed to point out every manhole cover on the road. This being New York it was a common refrain.

This prototype features the 6.0 V12 TDI, which produces a pavement destroying 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. How does it drive? For the purpose of self-preservation, this particular version was limited to half the torque and horsepower so that we couldn't have too much fun with it.
Nevertheless, the six-speed gear box worked, the engine revved up and the brakes clamped down hard. Maybe a little too hard. At one point Uwe winced and asked "did you hear that?" Did I hear what? The brakes were made a noise that made him very nervous. Was I about to get the Audi R8 fire experience?

Thankfully, that didn't happen. I waited as we turned back onto 11th avenue slowed down to get some daylight between myself and the lead Q7. There was a good 80 yards in front of us and I shifted into second and let that oil burner roar. How fast did I get? I'm not sure, but fast enough to make Uwe tense up (which makes me think 28 mph).

Though this wasn't a full force test drive experience, there was one feature of the car that works at any speed: style. We got lots of looks (helped by the escort) and people did the best they could to get pictures of me in the car. When people yelled I told them I was George Clooney. I don't think they bought it.

Credit goes to Audi for letting us take their precious concept car out for a spin on the less-than-stellar NYC streets. It either indicates Audi's abundance of trust or serious judgment lapses.

<![CDATA[ What Bentley Believes: 17-Page CO2 Manifesto Has Been Read ]]> Bentley_Paper.jpgBentley is refreshing. Their ultra-luxe, mega-horsepower sleds, favored rides of autocrats, royalty and rap tycoons, are such a specialized product that the Craftsmen of Crewe can pretty much reduce their whole climate-change/fuel-scarcity strategy to a question of customer relations. I promised I'd read the white paper on global warming etc. the company handed out at their New York Auto Show press conference yesterday—also available on Bentley's website—and now I have. Dry? To be sure. Wonky? Yep. But on the heels of the company's announcement at the Geneva Motor Show that it's going to seriously cut CO2 output by 2012, worth checking out.

Some of the highlights:

Life Is Better With Wheels: "It is...clear that mobility is becoming a fundamental component in perceptions of today's quality of life."

Bentleys Are Irrational: "As a luxury performance brand, the reasons for purchasing a Bentley are based on a more emotional than rational need for transportation."

Emergency!: "As this document makes clear, the world is facing a potential crisis over climate change and access to energy."

Upshot is that Bentley is putting its money, it heaping piles of money, behind FlexFuel. But not really first generation biofuels, which because they are derived from crops that people need for food has caused, as the report points out, riots. They are basically endorsing second-generation biofuels, made from heaps of decomposing filth waste products. Later, the situation will get completely kick-ass, when we brew up all our biofuels from farmed ocean algae, and also drive FlexFuel Bentleys in a future in which their is no sickness or war and we all live to be 317.

But you know what? We approve of this high-ground-taking on Bentley's part. Leadership! Even if they persistently remind us that emissions generated by Bentleys amount to the equivalent of "two cans of Cola in an Olympic sized swimming pool"—in other words, not very dang much, when compared to other carmakers. Of course, that's a bit of a bogus claim when you consider that Bentley might not even exist were it not for the global auto industry.

<![CDATA[ Hooked on Photoshop Works For Dodge? ]]> Eagle-eyed reader Eywolf noticed something peculiar yesterday morning when we ran the new 2009 Dodge Challenger images and press release. After our fearless leader was lambasted by Chrysler PR for what seemed like hours over our suggestion the press images for the Chicago Auto Show unveil of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 had been massaged to enhance reality, it seems there may be further p-chopping on the latest batch of images in an apparent attempt to deceive the muscle-loving public into believing Chrysler has more than one color available for the Challenger save money. We took the time to create an animated gif of two of the images in question — one, a 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 from Chicago (in orange). The other, a purported image of the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 (in white)...

We thought this time we'd reserve commentary on whether or not it's really been digitally enhanced to our readers. Mostly because we think you're smart enough to figure it out on your own. Perhaps this is what they mean when an automaker says they're experts in virtual product development. All we know is if what our eyes tell us is true, the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 is "virtually" identical to the 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8. Deception? Cost Saving? Silliness? You be the judge.

<![CDATA[ Pontiac in New York: We Build Excitement...Finally ]]> I'm writing this from the back seat of the Pontiac G8 GT. That's a midlevel-performance version of the sedan GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz asserts will return to Pontiac its long-absent dignity. Judging from the comfortable back seats and legroom, not to mention the reportedly solid platform, potent V8 and tight packaging, there's little doubt it will.

That's because the G8 GT (along with its LS3-powered sibling, GXP) is the first truly exciting car Pontiac's introduced in years, ironically arriving well after the company abandoned a borderline-fraudulent advertising claim of excitement creation. Lutz acknowledged the hubristic inaccuracy of the brand's old motto, "We Build Excitement," on stage at the New York auto show this week, evoking as evidence the defunct four-cylinder Grand Am, which, even in its malaise-era context, was slightly less exciting to operate than a lawn sprinkler.

Not that Pontiac's was the most egregious messaging offense of that period. Back in the early '80s, Ford insisted quality was "Job One." Simultaneously, it turned out the Fairmont, a car whose shoddiness was a thumb in the eye of every mid-level administrator who applied part of his stagflation-adjusted paycheck toward one. You may remember the Fairmont as the car whose horn was activated, without explanation, by pushing a plastic-capped stalk horizontally toward the steering column. Woe to the drivers who mistakenly plunged into the immovable steering-wheel hub (Note to self: research cases of jammed palms circa 1981). Others remember the Fairmont as a car beaten to the junkyard only by the Dodge Aspen/Plymouth Volare, a marginally more unconscionable shitbox.

(For the record, automakers weren't the only ones engaging in hyperbole. Burger King insisted one could have it one's way, yet failed to offer a fried quail egg or dollop of creme fraiche to those whose "way" involved those delicacies.)

The G8 shared Pontiac's stage at the New York auto show this week with a targa-topped version of the Solstice and a new version of GM's Australian Holden ute, the G8 sport truck. The latter may seem pointless to anyone who's not Australian, under the age of 40 or missing the gene for irony. Trust me; it's the kind of pointless that makes people uncomfortable enough to buy one. And if you think that paradox won't fly, just wait until someone builds a fiberglass cap for it.

The point of the story is that Pontiac, once an icon of performance, had been a victim of unspeakable corporate abuse during the past three decades. Remember what happened to Sybil (in that 1976 movie) after sustaining lesser parental disaffection? She ended up with a massive case of dissociative identity disorder. In the movie Sybil, it took a caring psychiatrist and some hard therapy to bring the Syb around. It's taken Bob Lutz's personal care to keep Pontiac likewise from ending up rocking in place and twisting its hair, which some say was in the company's brand-marketing plan for 2011.

The products are there, the excitement is palpable and it's up to Pontiac to live up to expectations.

<![CDATA[ Subaru R1e Re-Unveiled Live ]]> Subaru's press event was nothing short of spectacular and I say that in a fully sarcastic manner. The R1e that we already took many a peek at was officially unveiled by Subaru's head honchos. If you're wondering, the R1e will not be making it stateside, at least not anytime soon. However, it was announced that Subaru will be working with the New York Power Authority, which happily accepted two R1e's. They will now drive them around and allow Subaru to monitor their performance, as well as potential consumer demand. Like I said, spectacular. Press release after the jump.

SUBARU TO EVALUATE QUICK CHARGE ELECTRIC CAR WITH NEW YORK POWER AUTHORITY

NEW YORK, March 20, 2008 - Subaru today announced that it would begin evaluating its R1e electric vehicle (EV) in the United States this summer. The Subaru R1e will be on display at the New York International Auto Show, from March 21-30 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Based on the Subaru R1 minicar sold in Japan, the R1e was developed by Subaru in partnership with the Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. (TEPCO). The utility has been testing a fleet of R1e electric cars since 2006. As part of a U.S. test program, two of the Subaru R1e electric cars will join the New York Power Authority (NYPA) fleet.

"This new partnership with the New York Power Authority is further demonstration of Subaru's ongoing efforts in applying electric car technology in real world situations. Along with our newly introduced diesel powered cars, electric cars are a viable response to our need to improve fuel consumption and carbon output," said Tim Mahoney, senior vice president and chief marketing office for Subaru of America, Inc. "The R1e electrical vehicles are designed for city dwellers looking for an environmentally friendly and fun to drive alternative to gas powered cars."

"This joint venture with Subaru builds on the New York Power Authority's extensive involvement with clean transportation and gives us the opportunity to offer the latest in electric drive technologies to our customers," Roger B. Kelley, president and chief executive officer, New York Power Authority.

The Subaru R1e employs state-of-the-art, fast-charge lithium ion battery technology that eliminates typical lithium ion battery issues of charge memory loss, allowing partial charges and quick charges that do not decrease battery life. The two-seat Subaru R1e is capable of driving at speeds up to 65 mph with a range of up to 50 miles, making it an ideal urban commuter. The Subaru R1e can be "quick-charged" to 80 percent capacity in only 15 minutes using quick-charge technology. The vehicle can be fully charged overnight (eight hours) while connected to a standard household electrical outlet. The R1e uses an AC permanent magnet synchronized motor producing 40 kW.

"Subaru's goal is to become the leading brand in the electric vehicle market," said Ikuo Mori, president, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. "The R1e is an example of today's cutting edge battery technology, while the Subaru G4e Concept Car shows a glimpse into the future of electric cars."

There are currently 40 Subaru R1e vehicles in use and Subaru parent Fuji Heavy Industries will place an additional 100 electric vehicles into a consumer test program in Japan in 2009.
Subaru is concentrating on developing battery technology that could be used not only for electric vehicles like the R1e, but also in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and, eventually, fuel cell electric vehicles (FEVs). Compared to nickel metal hydride or nickel-hydrogen battery technology, lithium-ion battery technology offers a number of advantages, among them easier packaging, higher power density, better cooling for longer life, and potentially lower cost.

Service life for the high-density lithium-ion battery is estimated at 10 years and 130,000 miles, another environmental benefit of Subaru technology. The battery pack is also designed to be easily recycled. The laminated battery packs are flat, rather than cylindrical, and can fit in a space four inches high, offering EV manufacturers wide latitude in vehicle design and packaging for better weight balance. The battery's basic design and composition consist of laminate, manganese, and lithium ion.

<![CDATA[ Ford Transit Connect Taxi Is Bursting With Tech ]]> We're well aware that the Ford Transit Connect is here and available in a lot of variations, but I'm still a bit confused by the taxi-model version that we spied last week and witnessed the official unveil of yesterday. The interior of this thing includes the mandatory glass panel that separates the driver and passengers. And that's where the confusion begins. The glass includes a LCD display much like we've already seen, but there also seems to be a sort of a map etched into the glass.

It would seem that they could just integrate the in-car GPS for the passengers in the LCD display, but the map etched into the glass makes me ponder differently. We've seen Ford do some pretty amazing things with the glass of the Ford Transit Connect in a previou variant, so the reality of using a map etched into the glass and some type of blinking light would be a ton cooler, really.

While we're discussing the tech of the Transit Connect Taxi, the bubble on top of the Taxi illuminates green or orange depending on occupancy. This thing really puts the Crown Victorias—currently the workhorse of taxi fleets—to shame. Well, everywhere except under the hood.

<![CDATA[ Suzuki Kizashi 3 Concept Debuts, Actual Kizashi To Go On Sale In 2010 ]]> Today in New York, Suzuki unveiled the third, and seemingly last, Kizashi: the Kizashi 3 Concept. Whereas Kizashi was a low-slung GT and the Kizashi 2 was a hatchback/crossover, the Kizashi 3 is a true sports sedan that's supposed to be close to production. Similar to the other Kisashis, power comes from a 300-horsepower V6 mated to a six speed automatic. Press release and photos below.

LIVE! FROM NEW YORK: SUZUKI DEBUTS CONCEPT KIZASHI 3

NEW YORK (March 20, 2008) - Performing onstage at this year's New York International Auto Show in front of a packed house, American Suzuki Motor Corp. hosts the world debut of its sleek and athletic Concept Kizashi 3, which completes the company's star-studded cast of media-acclaimed Kizashi concepts. In addition to the North American reveals of Concept Kizashi and Concept Kizashi 2, the global introduction of Concept Kizashi 3 coincides with Suzuki's announcement that it will produce a sport sedan derived from the Concept Kizashi 3 design.

The Concept Kizashi series was developed by Suzuki's Advanced Design Group to reflect a dynamic athlete in motion, taking design cues from a strong, honed physique while displaying the performance, strength and style befitting a flagship vehicle. The design theme began with Concept Kizashi, which made its debut at the 2007 International Motor Show in Frankfurt, and the Concept Kizashi 2, unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, which further revealed Suzuki's new design language.

"Kizashi means 'prelude' in Japanese, and that's exactly what this design represents for Suzuki from both a business and a product standpoint," said Mark Harano, president, American Suzuki Automotive Operations. "Concept Kizashi 3 illustrates our brand character and personifies our heritage, design strength and engineering prowess. With customers in 192 countries and regions, Suzuki is truly a global brand, and the coming model carries on our mission to build the image of our automotive products in North America and eventually match our bikes' reputation."

Known primarily as a maker of small vehicles, Suzuki intends for the production derivative of the Kizashi series to serve as the company's flagship vehicle, strengthening its current product line of small cars, trucks and SUVs with a sporting, more accommodating sedan. The future production model will be built at Suzuki's brand-new Sagara plant in Japan, currently under construction, and provide an accessible alternative to the near-luxury segment. While a firm timetable has not been announced, Suzuki will deliver the Kizashi-influenced sport sedan to North American dealers by 2010.
The Concept Kizashi Series
Evoking the physical superiority and dignity of a world-class athlete, the Concept Kizashi series was developed to create a substantial presence that redefines the traditional performance vehicle and moves the Suzuki brand upscale. The overall design theme suggests physical strength from intense daily training, with the strong will, commitment and presence of a champion.

Each of the Concept Kizashi vehicles strikes a balance between driver comfort and sportiness, with roomy cabins melded to lean, dynamic exteriors. The hood and body style of all three Concept Kizashis hint at abundant engine power and wind-splitting aerodynamics, while the long wheelbase, aggressive wheel/tire combinations and abbreviated overhangs communicate a performance-oriented, energetic image. A powerful-looking body profile is incorporated throughout the series to convey underlying strength, with large wheels and a wide tread expressing a capacity for superior performance. Beyond its exterior architecture, the Concept Kizashi series constitutes a four-wheeled continuation of Suzuki's exciting, performance-oriented motorcycle heritage, represented best by its dynamic, world-renowned line of GSX-R sportbikes. Those bikes, some two decades after their introduction, continue to dominate the sportbike segment and have achieved iconic status.

<![CDATA[ Saleen Debuts Dan Gurney Signature Edition Mustang ]]> It's a double reveal at the Saleen stand this year. In addition to the Saleen S5S Raptor, the boutique builder also rolled out the Saleen Dan Gurney Signature Edition Mustang. The car was created in partnership with Dan Gurney to develop the blue and white homage to Gurney's 1969 Trans Am Mustang. The 465 HP supercharged 281 cubic inch engine, short throw shifter, 3.73:1 gearing out back, sticky tires and Watts linkage suspension do their part to provide a healthy race feel. Only 300 of the special edition cars are planned, so if you want a Mustang with Dan Gurney's signature on the dash, you better speak up quick.

Saleen Partner's with an American Icon to Create an American Legend New York, NY (March 20, 2008) - Saleen Automotive, America's premiere automotive enthusiast brand for over a quarter of a century, announced today at the New York Auto Show that it has entered into a partnership with American automotive legend Dan Gurney for creation of a special Gurney Signature Edition Mustang. "It is amazing that just two years ago Saleen was standing on stage here at the Javitz Center with Parnelli Jones and today we are with his long time rival and friend, and truthfully one of America's racing heroes, Mr. Dan Gurney," said Saleen President and CEO Paul Wilbur. All 300 of the Gurney Signature Edition vehicles will feature Saleen's 465 HP supercharged 281 cubic inch engine, short throw shifter, and 3.73 Max Grip rear axle. In addition, the vehicles will have custom two-tone seats that feature either blue or red Alcantara inserts designed to keep your rear end planted firmly behind the wheel. The legendary Gurney Eagle© logo is featured on the steering wheel and several other places around the car. The exterior reflects the look of Dan's 1969 Trans Am series Mustang, masterfully recreated in a fashion that honors history but looks aggressively towards the future. The heritage styled Gurney Edition body kit, 'duck bill' rear spoiler and 'stinger' style hood all come together in harmony with the carefully placed graphics and die cut Gurney Eagle insignia. "I am pleased that they could make a car that is so beautiful but still so true to my old race car. At the end of the day, all I really want is a car that is faster than Parnelli's" said racing great, Dan Gurney. Saleen executives were not prepared to make that statement, but what they did say is: "this is likely the best all around 281 supercharged car that Saleen has ever built," commented Saleen General Manager, Marques McCammon. "Dan Gurney has always been about business on the track. His cars were light, fast and handled like they were on rails," said Saleen Vice Chairman and Chief Technical Officer, Chris Theodore. "I'll admit we added a little weight when we added the blower to this car, but you will be shocked at how this car cuts through a corner." The Gurney Signature Edition gets its dynamic ability from the specially tuned Racecraft suspension, Generation-II Watts-Link Rear End, and super sticky Pirelli Corsa tires. This is a suspension combination that has never before been featured on a Saleen vehicle, and one that received the personal stamp from Dan Gurney himself. "It is like a dream come true to spend time on the tarmac with the Gurney's. Together, we will create a package that I am sure that market will love," said Chassis and Dynamics Lead Derk Hartland. The Gurney Signature Edition Mustang is slated to begin production this April and should start appearing in dealers later that month. With production being limited to only 300 cars, the Gurney Edition is sure to be a must have amongst collectors. In honor of Mr. Gurney's 'All American Racer persona the cars will be offered in only three colors: Torch Red, Performance White, and the feature color Vista Blue. One hundred of each color will be made with contrasting color graphics and interiors, and a set of "#2" roundels to truly relive the Gurney experience. "The most important piece of the car to me is Dan Gurney's signature on the center of the dash," commented Wilbur. " I view it as the stamp of approval by one of America's greatest drivers"

<![CDATA[ Saleen S5S Raptor Concept Unveiled At New York Auto Show ]]> All the folks we shook hands with at the Saleen Sterling Edition S302E reveal a couple of months ago were in attendance and happy to give us a look at their new Saleen S5S Raptor Concept. The ground up design starts with an all aluminum frame and a 5.0 L supercharged V8 good for 650 HP and 630 lb.ft. of torque. Those are some scrappy figures and the S5S Concept is said to make the run to 60 in a mere 3.2 seconds all while sipping on cellulosic ethanol. That's right folks, the S5S Raptor is a psuedo-environmentally friendly car with renewable fuel on its mind. Sounds good to us, we're happy with anything we can blast around in supercar-style long afte the dinosaur squeezin's run dry. Full details in the presser after the jump.

SALEEN REVEALS SUPERCAR CONCEPT THE "S5S RAPTOR" AT THE NEW YORK AUTO SHOW New York, NY (March 20, 2008) - Saleen's all new concept vehicle, the S5S Raptor made its world debut today on the floor of New York City's Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center. The S5S Raptor unveiling comes amidst several other Saleen announcements including a partnership with Dan Gurney, Rockstar Games and the integration of several first time seen ASC products, featured on two existing Saleen vehicles. "We are extremely proud of the Raptor. It is the car that enthusiasts are waiting for America to produce and Saleen is just the company to answer that call, " said Paul Wilbur, Saleen President and CEO. The S5S Raptor represents the first ground up vehicle to be conceived by the new Saleen management team and the most extensive demonst ration of the combined capabilities of Saleen engineering and the ASC creative team. "The Raptor is just a glimpse of things to come from Saleen, " says Chief Technical Officer, Chris Theodore. "Our company is unique in that we have the experience and knowledge behind some of the most exciting performance vehicles built over the past 20 years. Beyond the S7 Supercar, our team members have been involved in the Viper, Prowler, Ford GT, and the products of Chrysler SRT and Ford's SVT performance groups. These 'lessons learned' are evident in the Raptor concept and we will continue to build upon them as the company evolves."

The Raptor is a two seat mid-engine super car that competes in size and style with core offerings from the most notable of Italian exot ic car makes, but with a segment leading 650hp and 630 lb-ft of torque provided by a Saleen 5.0L Supercharged Engine - the source of the "S5S" designation. Unlike its competitors, the Raptor is designed to digest cellulosic ethanol. "This is the same ethanol formula," states Wilbur, "that is the official fuel of the 2008 American Le Mans Race Series and the IRL." The higher octane rating of E85 results in more power. It is a combination that will send the Raptor screaming to 60 mph in a g-force generating 3.2 seconds. With ethanol power, the car is both mean and clean!

Saleen's use of cellulosic ethanol is right for us for two reasons:

- It maintains consistency with our racing heritage, as many of the racing formats (IRL, American Lemans, etc) are now adopting ethanol as the racing fuel of choice.

- It also helps our environment through cleaner tailpipe emissions as well as reducing America's dependency on foreign oil.

While Saleen is a small, specialty vehicle maker, we share in the responsibility to do what we can to support our environment, without compromising on our brand values.

Compromise does not enter into the conversation at all. The Raptor 's hand-built 5.0L cubic inch engine with its patented twin-screw supercharger delivers its 650 horses at 6300 rpm and hits max torque at just 4400 RPM. This power sits on call beneath the knob of a close ratio 6-speed manual, or optional paddle shifting sequential gearbox. It's a combination that send Raptor's rigid aluminum chassis screaming to a top speed of over 200 mph.

As power is nothing without control, the double wishbone suspension and rack-and-pinion steering of the S5S is augmented by ABS traction control and stability control systems. The brake system features 15-inch (381 mm) front rotors with 6 piston calipers, and 13-inch (308 mm) rear rotors with dual piston calipers for maximum stopping power. Road holding traction is provided by the 275/35 ZR20 and 315/35/ZR20 Pirelli Rosso tires that wrap the 20" forged aluminum front and rear wheels respectively. The unique black-diamond and carbon fiber finish on
the wheels make them as stunning as they are strong.

"We spent a great deal of time on the design of the Raptor, " says Marques McCammon, General Manager of Saleen Automotive. "The vehicle's bold shoulders are reflective of an aggressive American attitude, reminiscent of Can-Am race car styling cues, but delivered with modern sophistication. If you see a little Chaparral or McLaren design influence in this car, you are right."

The aesthetics for the Raptor were developed by ASC Creative Services, America's largest independent automotive design firm. "This vehicle was an aggressively compressed program that combined the traditional methods of three-dimensional clay sculpting with sophisticated digital modeling tools," said Steve Nowicki, ASC Creative Services Director. "The vehicle is distinctive in a way that I think the world is going to love. The primary designer on this program was Dave Byr
