<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: GM's Bob Lutz Gives Great Head...Shots ]]> We're not sure if you realized it, but we threw down a shot of the back of a head from the Tuesday morning General Motors press reveal of new product and concepts from Opel, Saab, Cadillac and Chevrolet. A few of our eagle-eyed readers noticed that it was none other than the General's Maximum Bob whose head mysteriously popped into view and kept blockin' our shots of the General's new hotness. We were unfortunately sitting right behind the Aryan knight, and his trusty sidekick Rick (or is it the other way around?) — so, thanks to Bob, we've got the world's best gallery of the back of his head. OK, we kid the lovable and huggable vice-chairman, but come on dude, down in front!

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: 2008 Cadillac BLS Shows It Has A SexyBack...End ]]> The BLS is everything you could ever love about the Saab 9-3, except without the Swedishness. Yup, this wagon's got it all — as long as by "all" you mean a bio-fuel-powered engine option and "extra powerful" 180 HP / 400 lb-ft o' torque turbo diesel engine. But hey, it's got "LED technology" — we think that means the headlights, but it may mean on the dash. OK, we kid the luxe brand, it's not unattractive as far as wagons go, but if it were brought to our shores, it would demolish any and all brand cachet the Caddy brand's built up with new models like the CTS released here. But we wouldn't put it past the General. Full release after the jump.

Cadillac BLS Wagon Makes World Premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show

• First station wagon in Cadillac's history
• New 2.0L bio-ethanol fuel option with 200 hp / 147 kW
• New two-stage turbo diesel engine with 180 hp / 132 kW
• StabiliTrak becomes standard on all trim levels

FRANKFURT - The 2008 Cadillac BLS family improves with standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, a new wagon version and the addition of a new bio-ethanol engine and an extra powerful turbo diesel engine. These moves demonstrate Cadillac's commitment to continued growth in the European market.

The BLS sedan and wagon are offered with two direct-injected, common rail turbo-diesel engines that are fitted with a maintenance-free diesel particulate filter. The engines offer the dynamic performance customers have come to expect from Cadillac. The latest addition is a 132 kW (180 hp) turbo-diesel engine with either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel will be available on all BLS models, starting in December 2007. The two-stage turbo-diesel engine delivers 400 Nm of maximum torque, giving the BLS a top speed of 220 km/h and 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in 8.7 seconds.

The BLS wagon and sedan will also be the first Cadillac models to be offered in Europe with the option of a low-emission, bio-ethanol engine. The BLS 2.0L Flexpower will go on sale in November (Wagon) or December (sedan) 2007. Like the three turbocharged gasoline engines and the two turbo-diesels, the 147 kW (200 hp) Flexpower engine offers the dynamic performance customers have come to expect from Cadillac, while using Bio-ethanol (E85) as an alternative to traditional gasoline.

Exterior: expressive design and Wagon versatility

As the first station wagon in Cadillac's 104-year history, the BLS Wagon marks a new milestone for the brand. Clear, crisp and sharply defined contours, characteristic Cadillac design features and a striking wedge shape that is emphasized by the tapered lines of the side windows all make the Cadillac BLS Wagon an appealing new entry in the midsize station wagon segment.

"The BLS Wagon is an appealing addition to the Cadillac portfolio for customers seeking dramatically designed luxury vehicles that offer versatility and performance along with outstanding ride and handling characteristics," said Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor. "We think it will do well in many European markets where consumers desire a high degree of versatility and functionality in their vehicles."

From the front bumper and Cadillac hallmark V-shaped chrome-plated grille, to the trademark vertical tail lamps with the latest LED technology and rear bumper, the Cadillac BLS Wagon measures 4,716 mm, compared with 4,680 mm for the BLS sedan. At 2,038 mm wide (including exterior rear view mirrors) and 1,543 mm in height (including roof rails and roof antenna), the BLS Wagon combines a compact, sporty shape with a high degree of versatility and functionality.

The BLS sedan and wagon also feature jewel-like headlamps, fog lamps integrated into the body-color front bumper and a wide air intake below the grille. A narrow chrome strip runs along the side windows.

Interior: luxurious atmosphere and state-of-the-art infotainment systems

The Cadillac BLS Wagon offers plenty of interior space to support a wide variety of luxury and leisure interests. With the rear seats in use, the boot measures 419 liters loading space, with an additional 12 liters below the floor. With the rear seats folded down, the total amount adds up to 1,285 liters of flexible and versatile cargo space.

Wagon-only equipment consists of silver roof rails, dark tinted glass rearward of the B-pillar, a tailgate opening with a chrome sill plate, a cargo cover, cargo net and chrome cargo hooks.

The interior of both the BLS sedan and Wagon is highlighted by a three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel and an analog clock in the center stack. The circular instruments have white numerals and red needles on a black background. Optional refinements include leather seating surfaces and heated seats.

Four trim levels are available: Business, Elegance, Sport and Sport Luxury. The standard Business trim level offers 16-inch alloy wheels, Cadillac's StabiliTrak electronic stability program engine immobilizer, front, side and head curtain airbags, driver trip computer, three-spoke leather steering wheel with control buttons, cruise control, air conditioning, a seven-speaker audio system with CD player and "Piano Black" interior decor trim.

The intermediate trim level, Elegance, features additional standard equipment, including, wipers with rain sensors, eight-way power seats, dual-zone climate control and 17-inch alloy wheels. Red walnut wood veneer trim enhances the interior decor.

The Cadillac BLS Sport adds 18-inch wheels and lowered sports suspension for the front MacPherson struts and four-link rear axle. The chassis tuning ensures dynamic handling performance without compromising comfort. The BLS Sport interior is highlighted by the use of stylish aluminum trim instead of wood and the circular instruments have white numerals and red needles on a black background.

The Sport Luxury level is available in combination with the 2.8 V6 engine and the 1.9 Turbodiesel engine. In addition to the Sport content, it includes Bi-Xenon headlamps, heated and electrically adjustable leather seats with memory function and wood trim, instead of aluminum trim.

The popular Prestige Package, applicable to both sedan and Wagon, includes leather seat upholstery, a Bose sound system, DVD navigation system and wood interior trim option on BLS Business.

The high-quality audio system from premium American audio company Bose is combined with a new centerpoint simulated surround sound and additional rear-door speakers. The DVD navigation system with touch-screen operation includes newly added countries of Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Engines: three gasoline, two turbo-diesel and one bio-ethanol engine

The front-wheel-drive BLS sedan and Wagon are offered with a large range of power units, giving consumers the choice of two turbo-diesel, a turbocharged bio-ethanol and three turbocharged gasoline engines. The 1.9L four-cylinder with common rail direct-injection technology develops 110 kW (150 hp). In addition, a powerful new 1.9L four-cylinder two stage turbo-diesel engine with common-rail direct-injection delivers 132 kW (180 hp) and 400 Nm of maximum torque.

The gasoline engine offerings — all turbocharged — include two, 2.0L four-cylinder versions (120 kW / 175 hp and 154 kW / 210 hp) and a high-tech, 2.8L six-cylinder engine at 188 kW (255 hp), which features a twin-scroll turbocharger and variable phasing of the intake camshafts. The new 2.0L four-cylinder turbo-charged bio-ethanol engine develops 147 kW (200 hp). The BLS offers a six-speed manual transmission and five- or six-speed automatic transmissions, depending on the engine.

All BLS models now have StabiliTrak electronic stability control as standard. Model year 2008 also brings Tire Pressure Monitoring as standard equipment on the Sport and Sport Luxury trim levels.

The chassis of the BLS Wagon has been developed to provide both the agility and comfort customers expect from a Cadillac. Fine tuning of the McPherson struts in front and a four-link rear axle ensures dynamic handling performance without compromising ride or load capacity.

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Subaru Justy ]]> Because one of you asked for it, here's the Subaru Justy live and up close in all of its mini-Forrester goodness. The new Justy, supplied by an OEM agreement between Subaru and Daihatsu, is being positioned as an entry-level car in Subaru's lineup. The Justy's coming in three levels of Justy-ness, the 1.0E being the entry level, with the 1.0S being the version with a "sporty touch." Just a touch though, because it appears the real sporty spice is the third version, the G3X. Unfortunately we can't find anything in the press release on it, but it appears to be the mini-me to the Forrester behind it. Isn't it adorable? Full press release after the jump.

Justy 1.0E Inside the sharp and stylish exterior lies an interior that not only emphasizes design with creative features such as the tilt-adjustable speedometer but also provides practicality. This practical and casual compact provides numerous convenient storage areas and ample cargo space, and the versatile DOHC engine delivers effortless cruising and class-leading performance in the city or out on the open road. Justy 1.0S The 1.0S adds a sporty touch to the other functional characteristics of the Justy. Justy's ability to adapt to a range of everyday tasks is enhanced by a sports package that includes a chrome accented shift knob and aluminium alloy wheels. You will enjoy this sporty compact by taking advantage of the highly responsive accelerator and really appreciating the free-revving 1.0-litre DOHC engine.

Justy: Exterior

Exterior Design
Some features have been given an aerodynamic design. The coloured front bumper was newly designed and equipped with an air-dam flap at the bottom to control airflow under the floor. The front lower ends of the fender liners extend downwards like flaps so that the air coming from the front is directed downwards. Sufficient light for nighttime driving is provided by the eye-shaped larger headlamps that are angled upwards and include a manual levelling switch. Coloured electric door mirrors as well as coloured outer handles are standard for all models.
Wheels: 155/80R13 tyres are standard for the 1.0E model. 175/65R14 tyres with aluminium alloy wheels are standard for the 1.0S model.
Colours: Five colours available = Silver metallic / Red / Black mica metallic / Mint blue metallic opal / Maroon mica

Justy: Interior

Interior Design
The rounded dashboard extends to the door trim giving a spacious and wide-open feeling to the interior. The lower part of the dashboard is highly functional and provides some utility spaces. A three spoke, urethane steering wheel with a tilt function has been adopted. The speedometer and tachometer, arranged in a double-meter design, have been taken out of the dashboard and mounted on the steering column. This positioning helps the driver easily read the meters no matter the seat height. The information display, located in the centre of the meter, includes an odometer, and trip meters, as well as displaying current and average fuel consumption.
A 1-DIN audio unit (single-CD player, AM/FM radio) is available, with two speakers for the 1.0E model, and with four speakers for the 1.0S model.
A vanity mirror with a lid for driver and passenger, a map lamp and a luggage lamp are standard for all models.
The chrome accented gearshift knob is standard for the 1.0S model.

Utility

The seat height adjuster for the front seat can adjust the height of the entire seat to provide an optimum driving position for drivers (1.0S model only). The rear seat arrangement is another innovative feature providing comfort and utility when carrying passengers. The seatback can be reclined by up to five degrees and the rear seat can also be folded down independently with a versatile 60/40 split. The sliding seat cushion* can make the rear seat space flat creating an additional luggage space easily and also ensuring that there is no gap where cargo would slip through to the floor. The rear doors open nearly 80 degrees to facilitate the rear seat usability. The rear gate also has a wide opening (bottom edge of the rear gate to the ground when opened is 191 cm) making it easy to load and unload the vehicle.

The variety of convenient storage spaces throughout the vehicle includes a front door pocket, drink holder and a pocket on the passenger seat**. There is also a storage compartment in the front armrest, a glove box with vertical partitions and a separately lit multi-purpose storage tray. Two cup holders each are available for the front and rear seat.
*For safety reasons, passengers should not ride in the rear while the rear seats are slid forward.
**1.0S model only

Justy: Engine / Transmission

In-line 1.0-litre DOHC
Lightweight, compact, and quiet, this is one of the most efficient 1.0-litre engines in the world. It offers a wide spread of high-end power and low speed versatility thanks to the valve timing system, allowing the engine to deliver class-leading fuel consumption of 5.0 lit./100 km (Combined)* which is matched by one of the lowest CO2 emissions of 118g/km*. In addition, the self-regenerating high-performance catalytic converter can last much longer than conventional ones to guarantee that its ability to clean exhaust gas does not lessen as the engine gets older.
*According to 2004/3/EC

5-speed transmission
5-speed manual transmission allows you to take maximum control of the full range of abilities offered by the punchy 1.0-litre engine.

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Top Ten Things You May Have Missed Yesterday Here In Frankfurt ]]> Here's what you missed yesterday if you didn't get a chance to follow along with us live on the first day of the Frankfurt Auto Show, all rolled up into a top ten stories list — for your reading enjoyment:

1.) BMW unveiled the X6, and yes, as all the spy photos showed us, it's got a seriously large rear end. What we didn't know is that it'd have a hybrid brother. [Live Reveal, Press Photos]

2.) As we broke to you first a few weeks back, Lamborghini revealed their one million euro car, the Reventon. Yes, it's truly a "unique" looking car. We'll put it to you this way, it has a nose that would even out the X6. [Live Reveal, Press Shots]

3.) Bugatti decided they'd reveal a new Veyron and you know, cover it in aluminum sans steel. Why'd they do it? Because they could, mein freund. [Press Photos]

4.) Europe gets a new Ford Focus. Yes, it's prettier than the one we've got. [Live Reveal]

5.) The Jaguar XF looks a little bit more pretty all shellacked up under the auto show lights than it first did in press shots and in video, but it still leaves a very Dodge Intrepid-like taste in our mouths. [Live Reveal, Press Photos]

6.) Ferrari reveals the F430 Scuderia — who knew Italians could be such Deutsch-bags? [Live Reveal, Video Reveal, Press Photos]

7.) Mazda reveals the 2008 Mazda6. It also got pre-vealed the day before online. [Live Reveal, Press Photos]

8.) Volkswagen's Up! concept car gets a preview on German TV, then a live reveal on stage and finally, a fuel economy number. Or at least a "predicted" fuel economy number. [Random TV Reveal, Live Reveal, Press Photos]

9.) Honda shows it can tour in concept with the Honda Accord tourer concept. [Live Reveal]

10.) GM's Opel division reveal yet another E-Flex concept car. This time it's the not-so-extreme, but definitely diesel-tastic "Flextreme." Did we mention it likes to have Segways in a very uncomfortable place — and no we don't mean the back seat of a Volkswagen. [Live Reveal, Press Photos, Segways In Back]

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Opel Flextreme Concept Stores Segways In Its Rear End ]]> So there are now officially two cool things about the Opel Flextreme concept car revealed here at the Frankfurt Auto Show last night. The first would have to be the fact that the concept's a diesel-electric hybrid — and we heart the idea of mating the two fuel efficiencies together. The second is that the Flextreme has two little Segways that it stores in its rear end. It's adorable. Oh, you want to know more? Check after the jump.

From the original post from the reveal of the new dual-powertrain GM concept car:

"The Flextreme takes the new design language debuted in the GTC Coupé at the Geneva Motor Show several steps further. With the forward-opening rear doors (FlexDoor®), a large transparent roof and two tailgate doors that open from the side and swing upwards, the concept car continues Opel's tradition of particularly flexible and practical body concepts with attractive designs. This also includes the innovative FlexLoad® additional underfloor luggage compartment.

The big surprise for the IAA are two high-tech electric personal transporters, ingeniously packaged below the cargo floor. They can be used in areas that cars cannot enter, thereby adding an extra mobility option. The electric scooters provide up to 38 km (23 miles) of clean mobility."

Look, they're both adorable and doubly environmentally friendly! ]]>

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: The Nissan Mixim Concept Is Still Like Batman, Is A Chick Magnet ]]> Yup, it's still like Batman with those big ol' winged doors. But a new development would seem to be that it draws in the ladies like crazy. Or maybe those two lovely ladies were paid to be up there. Somehow we doubt that. Nope, it was totally the animal magnetism of the Dark Knight. Full press release again included after the jump.

Mixim Concept Car The Mixim concept car is a compact vehicle for young drivers who are mostly engaged by their computer and the world via the internet. The driver sits centrally, with two seats either side, while the steering wheel and controls are inspired by the interfaces so familiar to computer gamers. Powered by Nissan's 'Super Motor' electric motor/generator and using compact lithium-ion batteries, Mixim has unusually rapid performance combined with a usefully extended range. One Super Motor powers the front axle and a second drives the rear axle, giving Mixim all-wheel drive. Mixim takes the most up-to-date electric vehicle (EV) technology and clothes it in a svelte and distinctive coupé shape. Its wraparound windscreen, inspired by the visor of a crash helmet, dominates the profile while the swept back windscreen, flowing roofline and sharply truncated rear hints at sporting performance unexpected from an electric vehicle. Diamond-shaped styling cues feature inside and out, notably on the twin air intakes to the rear of the doors and the front LED driving lights, while an upper triangular side window links the gentle slope of the roof with the dramatic angular slash that runs through the centre of the doors. The rear hatch opens to reveal a large trunk area behind the three seats. An occasional fourth seat is also housed behind the front seat module. Sitting on a 2530mm wheelbase, Mixim is 3700mm long, 1800mm wide and 1400mm high, the Mixim is shorter and lower than Micra, though slightly wider. It weighs just 950kgs. Despite being a concept car with no guarantee of being turned into a series production model, Mixim's development is in line with the Nissan Green Program, the company's publicly stated desire to create a more sustainable mobile society. Throughout the show, the Mixim will be driving from a low stage via a ramp to an elevated display platform on the Nissan stand.

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Ford Kuga Revealed ]]> First there was the Ford Verve and now the boys n' girls from Ford have unveiled the Ford Kuga — the new crossover inspired by the Ford Iosis X concept car revealed at the Paris Auto Show last year. Powered by a 2.0-liter 136 PS Duratorq TDCi diesel engine it...umm...hmm...yeah, you guys have already seen this. We'll just show you the pretty pictures we just took. The full press release is again below the jump though, in case you're interested.

FRANKFURT PREVIEW FOR FORD KUGA

* Stylish Ford Kuga crossover is previewed in near production form ahead of sales launch in early 2008
* Inspired by the iosis X Concept that was revealed at the 2006 Paris Motor Show
* Kuga is the latest showcase for Ford's 'kinetic design'
* Impressive on-road driving dynamics with substantial off-road ability
* Model range features 'intelligent' 4WD and FWD systems
* Powered by Ford's acclaimed 2.0-litre 136 PS Duratorq TDCi diesel engine
* Benefits from strong Ford Focus lineage
* First crossover designed and developed in-house by Ford of Europe
* To be produced at Ford's Saarlouis plant in Germany

Ford of Europe's product portfolio is expanding again - and in another new direction. The new Ford Kuga is an exciting 4WD crossover that combines style with technology and promises impressive on-road dynamics coupled with substantial off-road ability.

The new Ford Kuga will go on sale throughout Europe during the first half of 2008. "When we unveiled the stunning iosis X Concept car at the 2006 Paris Motor Show I promised that in less than two years we would enter this segment with an all-new vehicle developed and built in-house," said John Fleming, President and CEO, Ford of Europe.

"In delivering that promise, the commitment we also gave in Paris to add new and exciting niche vehicles to a newly energised Ford of Europe portfolio was also kept," Fleming added.

"Kuga offers a rare blend of a wagon and SUV features together with coupé-like sporting qualities," said Stephen Odell, Vice President for Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe.

"A major element of our strategy to return the Ford of Europe business to sustained profitability is the introduction of exciting new products - like Kuga - that attract new customers to the brand," explained Odell. "The S-MAX proved to us that there is demand for vehicles which offer the customer universal usability for work, leisure and family roles and where "driving pleasure" is also very important," he added.

Unmistakably a Ford

One of the challenges of the Kuga development team was to give the vehicle Ford's acknowledged driving quality while at the same time delivering substantial off-road ability.

For this reason, the Ford Kuga will be available with an intelligent four-wheel-drive system which contributes positively to normal road use and helps give the vehicle an almost sporty dynamic ability. The fact that the Kuga will also be available as a front-wheel-drive only version simply emphasises the crossover concept of the vehicle.

Kuga's powertrain will feature Ford's established and highly fuel efficient 2.0-litre, 136 PS Duratorq TDCi common-rail diesel engine, mated to a Durashift 6-speed manual transmission. Further details of the Kuga powertrain will be released closer to launch in early 2008.

Kuga Design - Standing Out

"Our new strategy, 'kinetic design', is a very flexible design language which will give an exciting look to all our vehicles," said Martin Smith, Director Design, Ford of Europe. "The iosis XConcept demonstrated how 'kinetic design' could be adapted to the C-sized crossover segment of the market. All the expressive design elements of iosis X are clearly visible in the production vehicle. The new Ford Kuga is a dramatic addition to the Ford portfolio which develops our brand significantly."

Kuga closely follows the proportions and basic dynamic forms of the iosis X. This relationship is enhanced by the paint finish in the same unique 'Ice White' body colour and the bold wheel arches are filled with the same alloy wheels, as seen on iosis X which will be available to customers as a 19-inch option. Strength and athleticism in the design are key attributes of Ford's 'kinetic design' philosophy. Kuga demonstrates this through its dynamic lines, full surfaces and muscular presence. This athletic form language is highlighted with the bold kinetic graphics such as the trapezoidal front grilles, rising belt-line and kick-up of the rear window graphic and the dramatic swept back headlamp shapes.

For the production Ford Kuga the coupé-like roof profile of the iosis X Concept has been adjusted to a slightly higher silhouette offering comfortable accommodation for five people.

The luggage compartment is accessed via a split tailgate and this, together with the divided rear lights, ensures the maximum full load width is available for loading and unloading.

Finally, the rear end design of Kuga also incorporates the graphic elements of 'kinetic design' such as the high mounted tail lamps, facetted rear glass and sculptured rear bumper. The rear bumper neatly integrates the tailpipes into the contours of the diffuser.

Kuga Interior - Space and Comfort

The interior of the new Ford Kuga has a spacious feel - and not just because of the large panoramic glass roof fitted to the preview model and available as an option in production.

The clean, ergonomic design of the instrument panel and centre stack converge into a voluminous centre console for maximum accessible storage. These interior components contribute to a comfortable surrounding for the driver and front seat passenger. The high seat and shoulder line position of the doors offers the opportunity for maximum glazed areas to give a light and airy environment for passengers and provides the driver a commanding view of their surroundings.

The materials chosen for Kuga's interior also demonstrate the close links to the
iosis X Concept. In Kuga we see once again technical materials, fine leathers and striking orange piping. The Ebony interior is set off by a centre console and details in the door which also feature the piano-white finish from iosis X. All these elements together show how Ford intends to enable Kuga customers in the future to personalise their vehicle.

A hint of the technology coming in Kuga is seen in the new Blaupunkt navigation system which incorporates a 7" colour display to also show images from a rear view camera incorporated into the tailgate. This new feature, to aid reversing manoeuvres, will find its way to the production version of the Kuga.

"We're very excited about Kuga, and believe that its blend of great looks, compact exterior dimensions, superb on-road driving quality, spacious and high quality interior and good off-road ability will allow it to stand out from the crowd," said Fleming. "We can't wait to see it on and off road early next year"

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Ford Verve Concept Reveals Design Future Of Ford Fiesta ]]> As we told you just a short while ago, we're live at the Ford press reveal. And yes Ford fanboys n' girls, this is the Verve concept car, revealed today at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It's a new conceptually Bold Move from the brand that's known for using the phrase — sometimes even every day. But what's most important about the concept car are not the lovely ladies revealing the concept, but that the Verve's supposed to fortell the future of the Ford Fiesta — a product that we told you yesterday we'll be seeing ourselves stateside. Full press release is below the jump.

FORD VERVE CONCEPT HINTS AT FORD'S FUTURE SMALL-CAR DESIGN VISION

FRANKFURT , 23 August 2007 - Ford Verve Concept - a bold and colourful concept car to be revealed at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show - gives the first hints of Ford's future small-car design vision.

The significance of the Ford Verve Concept is that it's the first physical evidence of the design direction for an all-new small Ford since it was announced earlier this year that the European arm of the company's global Product Development group is taking the design and engineering lead in creating a new small-car portfolio for major world markets. The Ford Verve Concept is the first of three concept vehicles which will debut in key regions - Europe, Asia and North America.

"Ford Verve Concept is presented here in Frankfurt as a bespoke concept car to generate reactions while our production plans are taking shape," said John Fleming, President and CEO of Ford of Europe. "Our Design team took an unrestrained approach to how our future small cars could look, and this eye-catching concept was one of the results. If we get the reaction we expect, I'm certain that the team will incorporate elements of this advanced design vision into our final production design. This will make the next generation of small cars from Ford very compelling indeed."

"Ford Verve Concept is clearly our most expressive form language yet," said Martin Smith, Executive Director of Design for Ford of Europe. "Bold, even radical, it demonstrates the dynamic possibilities for expressing Ford's kinetic design philosophy in a small car that is a chic, modern and individualistic statement for a sophisticated, fashion-aware generation."

Finished in rich colours and distinctive materials inspired by the world of fashion and cosmetics, the Ford Verve Concept was created by a team of designers from Ford's studios in Dunton, England, and Cologne, Germany.

A bold expression

Building on the kinetic design momentum of Ford's recent iosis and iosis X concept cars, and the more premium feel of production models like the new Ford Mondeo, the Ford Verve Concept is a bold expression of a small-car vision.

Martin Smith uses expressions like "precision sculpted", "agile muscularity" and "toned athleticism" to describe the full surfaces of its body shape, which are complemented by a sleek roofline and B-pillarless structure that lend an elegant, coupe-like feel of sophistication.

Its colour - a deep magenta red encapsulated in a tinted clearcoat for an even deeper glow - is a daring declaration of individualism and exclusivity.

"We wanted to make a bold statement about our vision for Ford small cars of the future," said Stefan Lamm, Chief Exterior Designer, Ford of Europe. "Ford Verve Concept symbolises our ambition to be a leader in small car design and create individual cars for individual customers, just as we have with the S-MAX and new Mondeo."

Given a wide degree of freedom to create the concept, the design team, including lead exterior designer Chris Hamilton, grounded their efforts in reality. Ford Verve Concept was created with an eye toward production feasibility.

Style and Energy in Motion

The concept's face is bold and sporty, yet friendly and engaging. The front of the vehicle is dominated by a large, inverted trapezoidal lower grille and a large Ford oval badge centred in the compact upper grille opening.

The lower grille features strong horizontal blades punctuated by a regular array of 'bullet' shapes that combine to create the visual effect of corresponding vertical bars. The lower grille and badge treatment are the Design team's intended signature elements to communicate the Ford design DNA in future products.

The bonnet shape is sculpted dynamically - toned and athletic but not overtly muscular. This feeling combines with the more pronounced, rearward-stretching headlamp units - inspired by Mondeo - to give the face of the Ford Verve Concept a friendly, open and inviting personality. The prominent headlamps feature two projector beams and a light-emitting diode (LED) array.

From the side view, the concept has the purposeful, cab-forward look of energy in motion. The profile is emphasised by the pillarless side window shape, the upper contour of which mirrors the body's curving upper contour line. This extends rearward from the angular A-pillar to marry the sculpted, semi-high-mounted, LED tail lamps - themselves sculpted to become part of the fullness of the body shape - and the car's integrated tailgate spoiler. These elements blend cohesively together and support the vehicle's panoramic glass roof.

A bodyside belt line adds to the dramatic array of shapes that lend a feeling of controlled tension. The wheel arches also communicate tension and muscularity - another signature of kinetic design.

At the rear, the lower diffuser with integrated centre exhaust outlet are central elements of a cohesive design that incorporates the encapsulated rear bumper and design accessories, like brushed aluminium accents on the lower edges of the fog lamps. The lower diffuser is formed of dark chrome, which provides a muted contrast with the deep magenta body colour to create a controlled expression of tension and suspense.

The 18-inch, 12-spoke, two-piece alloy wheel design lends even more drama to the car. The wheel design is light and airy, with a feeling of depth and 'three dimensionality' that draws the eye to the base of the spokes. Ford Verve Concept's low-profile tyres each feature a sidewall stripe that complements the rich body colour.

Other accents on the vehicle - evoking the way in which carefully selected accessories can complement fashions - include a subtle chrome bar in the door handles and similar use of brushed aluminium on the lower grille surround, the rear number plate surround and on the lower edge of the front fog lamps.

These combine subtly to signal a higher level of premium quality than that typically found in small cars.

"With a small car, for example a B segment car compared with a larger car, we believe we can play up - or amplify - key elements of the kinetic design form language," Lamm said. "It's not just a matter of copy-and-paste from one vehicle segment to another but rather how to interpret the philosophy for each individual car. You can clearly see this when you compare the larger iosis concept, the iosis X crossover and this new project."

Exploring the Inner Kinetic

The Ford Verve Concept is as dramatic on the inside as its exterior. From its boldly shaped surfaces and courageous use of rich colours and irresistible materials, the car has a playful sense of sophistication and fashion. It also pioneers new technologies that someday could be a production reality.

As Ford designers explored the possibilities for a future Ford small car, the wide latitude they were given helped them focus on applying the tenets of kinetic design to the interior of the new concept. As a result, the Ford Verve Concept repudiates tradition, especially in the architecture of the instrument panel, whose sensuous curves and full shapes make a typical, upright centre stack design seem distinctly old fashioned.

"This is a quantum leap in bringing kinetic design into interior design," said Niko Vidakovic, Chief Interior Designer, Ford of Europe. "This type of visual innovation, linking the form language of the interior so strongly with the exterior, is something we believe no other company is doing."

Pronounced sculpting characterises the upper instrument panel, created by the hands of Ford interior designer Tiago Diaz and supervisor Ernst Reim. Full surfaces and flowing contours on interior elements - especially the instrument panel and door panels - reflect the kinetic design elements on the exterior of the vehicle. These elements combine to create an enveloping feeling for the vehicle's occupants, contrasting the airiness provided by the panoramic glass roof.

New Aesthetic Inspired by Mobile Phones

The Ford Verve Concept was designed for the generation that grew up with mobile phones.

A predominant feature of the interior is the centre stack of the instrument panel. Aesthetically, it follows the curves and contours of the instrument panel shape, soaring up with an eye-pleasing winged effect to frame a large-screen, colour Ford Convers+ system incorporated in the upper dash. The Ford Convers+ system incorporated in the concept is the latest-generation Human Machine Interface (HMI) recently introduced in the Ford Mondeo. This alone indicates the level of sophistication incorporated in the Ford Verve Concept small-car vision.

Functionally, a key element of the centre stack design is the decoupling of the traditional elements of the entertainment system - the screen, control elements and the electronics. Separating these elements allowed designers to place controls and buttons for optimal ergonomic positioning in a design that resembles the logic of a mobile phone.

This new approach means that the Ford Verve Concept introduces a completely new aesthetic - a new approach to the form and function of interacting with underlying technologies. The unique architecture also embraces other key systems, including navigation and in-car phone controls.

Every button and switch was crafted with the kind of minute attention to detail that characterises good mobile phone designs. This system philosophy gives the Ford Verve Concept instrument panel centre stack a different feel than that of traditional automotive switchgear.

"A new generation of buyers raised with mobile electronic devices would feel right at home in this new automotive interior, one that exceeds the standards typical in the small-car segment," said Vidakovic.

The concept's heating/ventilation controls, highlighted in a lozenge shape at the midpoint of the centre stack, feature large twist dials which were inspired by the sculpture found in high quality power showers.

The centre stack structure flows into a centre console, which provides stowage areas, including a tray for a mobile phone or MP3 player as well as a large bin for a purse or shoulder bag near the handbrake.

"The centre stack is like the art gallery of the car," Vidakovic said. "The combination of the sculpture of the upper instrument panel, the rich interior colours and materials and the jewellery-like brightwork is very distinctive."

The primary gauges - speedometer and rev counter - are uniquely framed by binocular-shaped, short tunnels of brightwork which complement the centre stack and contrast the rich interior colours like a fashion accessory.

Ford Verve Concept's steering wheel is another work of sculpture. Its crash pad, sculpted of soft-feel material and framed in brightwork, provides a rich tactile and visual centrepiece for the Ford oval badge. The left and right spokes of the three-spoke design incorporate the toggle controls for the HMI system.

Rich, Harmonious Colours

From the instrument panel to the seats, the Ford Verve Concept is trimmed elegantly in a harmonious blend of magentas. Materials were inspired by the exclusive fabrics and leathers of haute couture, according to Ruth Pauli, Chief Designer, Colours and Trims, Ford of Europe.

"Colour plays an important role in emotionalising our products," Pauli said. "With Ford Verve Concept, we are striving for a very precise expression of a certain style. Expressive colours in the right harmonies and contrasts. Soft yet intense. Good materials like glove-leather that's beautiful to touch. These details are helping us bring a feeling of premiumness into the volume small car world."

The harmonies and contrasts of the concept are distinctive. The portfolio of materials used by Pauli, colour and trim specialist Ulrike Dahm and other members of the Ford Design Europe team include:

* Deep burgundy leather for the upper instrument panel, contrasted in the lower area by a slightly green-hued black leather
* The seats are covered in deep burgundy leather trimmed with electric magenta piping

Small elements of the interior - even control stalks on the steering column - reflect an attention to detail from the team inspired by the packaging of luxury cosmetics, which often incorporate sophisticated, expensive-looking details to convey brand appeal. Such small packaging requires the precise execution of every detail and the right expression, tonal quality and saturation of colours.

"Together, these elements combine to create a strong statement of consistency, harmony and quality that makes the Ford Verve Concept such a cohesive design statement," Pauli said. "It is this cohesiveness that will make this concept appeal to a modern, fashion-aware audience."

Gauging Public Reaction in Frankfurt

As product development of a new generation of Ford small cars continues behind the scenes, Ford of Europe is hoping to gauge public reaction to the Ford Verve Concept during the Frankfurt Motor Show.

European design chief Martin Smith said this and other opportunities in the near future for public feedback will be important drivers of the ultimate Ford small-car design direction.

"The Ford Verve Concept is a dynamic first public expression directionally of some of the thinking that will be contributing to the design DNA of our next-generation products. At this stage, we have had the freedom to be radically innovative, but I'm confident about the realistic possibilities for kinetic design to embrace this segment of vehicles."

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Live Reveal Of Opel Flextreme Diesel-Electric Concept Car! ]]> We were at Frankfurt's Bockenheimer Depot for GM's revealing of the Opel Flextreme Diesel Concept, the latest sheetmetal incarnation of the company's E-Flex architecture. The system uses a series hybrid system supported by a diesel engine operating at peak efficiency to charge a battery pack from from power supply firm A123. GM vice chsirmsn Bob Lutz took time out from flogging training jets to act as MC for the event, which included a light show and modern dance routine straight out of Mumenschanz circa 1977, minus the toilet paper rolls. We'll have a gallery up momentarily. UPDATE: Full press release after the jump.

Dynamic, Versatile and Less Than 40 g CO2/km: Opel Flextreme

Innovative, sporty monocab concept displays ground-breaking E-Flex architecture
Emission-free operating range of 55 km with electricity from mains outlet
Small diesel unit charges lithium-ion battery for total operating range of 715 km

Rüsselsheim/Frankfurt. Opel Flextreme is the name of the concept vehicle that marks a milestone in the development of the electric car: with its completely new, environmentally friendly E-Flex electric propulsion concept most commuters in Europe could travel everyday without producing any CO2 emissions. The car only needs to be charged for a relatively short time through the mains outlet after traveling 55 kilometers. If required however, the Flextreme can travel up to 715 km without stopping to recharge or refuel thanks to its small turbo-diesel engine. According to the European test cycle (ECE R101), this unit's emissions are expected to be less than 40 g CO2/km. With the dynamic IAA monocab coupé concept, Opel also highlights others innovative solutions - including the electric personal transporters under the FlexLoad® load floor.

The Opel Flextreme uses GM's E-Flex architecture and represents the company's strategy to develop vehicles that reduce CO2 emissions and the automobile's dependency on oil,
thereby supporting global diversification of the energy mix. This also includes using the mains electricity network as an energy source. At the concept's heart is an electric motor that takes its power from a large lithium-ion battery. The difference to conventional hybrid propulsion systems is that the E-Flex system's 1.3-liter diesel engine is not connected to the wheels. It is purely on board to produce additional electricity to charge the battery and provide a greater operating range. It always operates in the optimum rpm range and its cylinder pressure-based closed loop technology controls the combustion process, further reducing the vehicle's emissions.

With a fully charged battery, the Flextreme has an operating range of 55 kilometers when running purely on electrical power, and only requires a standard 220 V mains socket to recharge the battery in around three hours. Commuters in Europe have an average commute of less than 50 kilometers, so if they were to charge the car up overnight and during the day, they could drive over 100 km each day without producing any CO2 emissions. "Commutes to major city-centers in Europe will do nothing but grow more challenging in the future, "," says Robert A. Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, Global Product Development, "and we see E-Flex vehicles as an elegant solution for commuters." Bob Lutz sees the Opel Flextreme Concept vehicle as "a natural for the Opel brand in Europe, where it has long been known for technological innovation and strong design."

System already integrated into product development

The E-Flex system is not just a vision of GM - it is already fully integrated into product development. It enables different propulsion systems to be fitted into one uniform chassis with electric propulsion. Fuel cells or bioethanol/diesel engines can also be fitted as secondary propulsion units depending on what energy source is readily available in the driver's area.

The timetable for series production is closely tied to the development of key technologies, such as high-performance lithium-ion batteries. E-Flex Chief Engineer Frank Weber is confident about its further development: "We fully intend to bring this technology to market," says Weber. "we're increasingly confident that our strategic battery partners will be able to deliver a production-ready battery in the near future."

Segways in trunk add extra mobility option

The Flextreme takes the new design language debuted in the GTC Coupé at the Geneva Motor Show several steps further.

The electric scooters provide up to 38 km
(23 miles) of clean mobility.

<![CDATA[ Frankfurt Auto Show: Volkswagen Reveals "Up!" Concept Car Sketch On German TV ]]>
Last night the above commercial called "Das Auto" was shown here on German TV before an expected announcement today, one day before the Frankfurt Auto Show, of a new Smart-fighting concept car called the "Up!" Yes, that's an exclamation point in the name of the concept car, and no, we've no idea why it's there. While we know there's been much talk of a tie-up between Apple and V-Dub, we've no idea if this is the car folks have been talking about — despite the vey Apple-like interior designs. What we do know is this concept's one of those "gonna be made" concept cars and it's set to go into production in two years with a fuel economy target of as close to 100 mpg as possible. Here's a better screen cap of "Das Smart." We're expecting we'll have more on dis auto throughout the day, so keep your eyes on our Frankfurt Auto Show tag for all the hottest action. <![CDATA[ Fiat Grande Punto Abarth "essesse" (Super Sport) Coming To 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show ]]> Fiat's given the Grande Punto Abarth a bit of a conceptual upgrade for the Frankfurt Auto Show with the Grande Punto Abarth Super Sport prototype concept car. They're calling it the "essesse," but with upgrades including a booster kit that almost doubles its power output from the standard Grande Punto Abarth — up to 180 horses — we're calling it pretty frickin' neat. We'll see it in person in Frankfurt next month, but for now you'll have to be content with the two shot gallery below and the full poorly translated press release below the jump.

Grande Punto Abarth "essesse" prototype (Super Sport)

The absolute star of the stand is the Grande Punto Abarth "essesse" (Super Sport) prototype. A jewel of assertiveness and elegance, the car is offered with a booster kit that almost doubles its power output with relation to the basic model (up to almost 180 bhp). The '"essesse"' kit also envisages a number of specific elements that accentuate both the sporty look of the Abarth model (for example adhesives with the 'essesse' logo or a chequered flag) and its dynamic behaviour, with a particular low stance for a more powerful braking system. This is a feature that maintains a brand tradition: for example, the Fiat 500 of 1958 delivered 13 bhp at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 85 km/h, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year, produced 26 bhp at 5000 rpm and a top speed of 118 km/h.

The Grande Punto Abarth and the Grande Punto Abarth with the 'essesse' kit aim to revive the thrill of those cars, offering an opportunity, addressed to the young in particular, of entering the racing world in total safety and at an accessible price.
