How about, say, four grand... with the V12 removed and a nice small-block just begging for installation?

Spare engine? For $40K it had better come with it's own mechanic... it'll need one.

As an XJ-S owner, I'm required to have some bias when assessing the value of these buttressed beauties, but even a pristine example such as this would have me balking at half the asking price.

Sure, my $500 beater Jag has its share of problems, but I'll gladly take them all for the $39,500 difference in price.

It's a pretty kitty, but way too much scratch. Pass me the pipe.

$10-12K, alright; if you are a native masochist, but $40K is laughable. Regardless.

Okay... am I the only one who feels a little misled by the title to be sorely disappointed by what I found?

God, there must be a more eloquent way to say that, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.

Actually, the best thing to have for a V12 Jaguar is spares. I would make it a double V12 powertrain. When one of them would go wrong, you'd still have a backup...which would fail a couple minutes after it's counterpart.

He threw in the second engine to say there are technically 12 working cylinders. If you can get all 12 running on ONE engine is another story.

I assume that by "impressive run starting in 1949 with the xk120" you mean that you didn't find jags previous to the xk120 impressive, rather than you think that Jaguar did not produce any cars before the xk120.

@nataku8_e30: The xk120 was the start in the Sports car market for Jaguar, continuing with the rest of the xk series and adding in the E-type, you get a very good stretch of fantastic vehicles.

@nataku8_e30: There's a direct lineage, based on engine and other parameters, from the 120 through the XJS. Previous cars, while noteworthy, fall outside of this path.

@nataku8_e30: The SS 100 was a good roadster, but wasn't as explosive in popularity as the xk120.

Also, WWII didn't help either. It put a gap between the SS-Jag roadster and the xk120.

@Dr.Danger owns the city turkeys: I'm not sure that I'd say 12,000 cars produced was "explosive" popularity (wikipedia number... which actually surprises me a bit, since I think my dad has at least 4 or 5 xk120s in his 'barn'). I guess you could draw some sort of distinction due to Jaguar changing it's name after WWII, so the XK120 was the first true "Jaguar." It just seems a bit inaccurate to me to ignore Jaguar's pre-war history

@nataku8_e30: I agree, too, but the SS cars were really just heavily modified Standard chassis and engine with underslung suspension.

They weren't even really sporting until left sidevalves behind for the SS100. And they only made a few hundred of those over five years.

A friend of mine had one of these in White and it still has the presence that it once had. Every time we went somewhere in it you could see the looks, especially from the Cougars/women who expected some older rich guy to step out.

But having said that, there is still no way I would pay over $15k for one. At that price I could buy two, one to drive and one for parts!

    CRACK PIPE!

If you hate the new Jags because they are not "proper Jaguars", then this might well be the ticket for you, since you are also not likely to be young enough to care that much about best value.

But, I can think of a lot of better and more reliable ways to spend $40K. BUT, if you manage to put all 24 cylinders into the one drivetrain, then it's probably nice price just for the craziness of it!

Yeah, um no. Not for me anyway. Looks like a nice car but not with my money. I love that body though. I'd like to get one that doesn't run (that can't be hard) and convert it into a Jagrolet so normal people can work on it and it runs most of the time. They sure are pretty.
