    As if this would be somehow less wrong if the two rear wheels were still there?

    I can't imagine towing ANYTHING with a Citation, not to mention a boat that size.

    The seat belts in the back aspired to be anacondas. Exhale and they'd cinch up just a tiny bit. After about fifteen minutes, you had to take 'em off and start over with fresh breathing room.

    Easy to laugh/cry now, but X-11s ate RX-7s' lunches in SS-A and ran away and hid from Mustangs (which competed up a division in SS-GT) SCCA road courses back in the day.


    Sounds like this one's suspension isn't up to original showroom stock performance, unfortunately.


    And it wasn't just their final drive ratio that set them apart from base Citations; the 4-speed was a special close-ratio unit.

    @beercheck: Okay. The light of day shows I had my SS-A, SS-B, and SS-GTs mixed up a bit. Everything else is accurate though.

    There was a Shite-ation just like the one in that ad, a white five-door with wire wheels, around town at one point. Wonder what happened to it... if it's still around I'll shoot it, first with the Fuji, then with whatever I can find.

    I like the FRONT WHEEL DRIVE demonstration. I'll have to file that away some time in case some pesky guys in white coats steal 2 of my wheels...and I'm towing a trailer...

    @Bad Juju: Well, EPA ratings back then were widely understood to be 90% manure, 12% voodoo, and 43% fantasy. Using their math, this is an accurate estimation. Even so, on a couple of long trips ours broke 35mpg on the highway. Maybe it was the complete and utter lack of any kind of comfort accessories, like a radio or AC that kept the engine so lightly loaded.


    I don't give a damn what you guys say. I still like the Citation, and in particular the X-11. If I could find one for sale close by, I might jump at it. It was pretty quick for the day, and handled pretty well. And the back seat was gigantic.

    Surprisingly, the closely-related A (Celebrity, 6000) and L (Corsica, Beretta) platforms were highly praised for their handling when they were new. Of course that's by late Malaise standards, but I still think there's LeMons potential. I wonder if any of their upgraded parts would bolt onto the X-bodies?


    Come to think of it, I did see a beater Corsica run at an autocross once. It actually did fairly well, but its Iron Duke--sans muffler--running at redline (which was what, 3000 rpm?) was one of the worst things I've ever heard. Imagine a diesel-powered tractor at full tilt, with some sort of power take-off accessory that's being used to rape a cow, and you'll have a decent approximation.


    It would've made a very interesting car at LeMons, since the worst possible punishment would be to keep driving it.

    Small world. One of my friends came by last evening and instead of sporting the beater Mercedes Sedan he was rolling funky in a snow white Citation wagon because the Benz was seized up. An animal rescue freak (dogs) loaned him this piece of Americana Classique. Pooch-0-Rama interior with stank.

    It announced its arrival with a cloud of blue oil smoke. It departed after much grinding and pumping (no, not that kind) in similar cloud. Sort of life the witch disappearing in the Wizard of Oz, except the smoke was blue.

    I sincerely don't see how one of these could survive LeMons but then, this was the CrapWagon and not the X-Treme X-11.

    So that's two Citations in two days after none, really. Must be an omen.

    The last front wheel drive car I ever drove with a panhard 3-link rear end like that was my roommate's '93 or so Tercel. Talk about scary handling! Whenever you went over a big pothole the rear axle would shift over to the side a couple inches. This did not inspire confidence at highway speeds. Of course a three link setup can be made to handle well, but it appears Toyota was focused on other things. The only things that could be said for that Tercel was that it got good mileage (although it burned more oil than a rotary) and had more "driving excitement" than modern Toyotas.

    Every time I see the Citation sitting in my dad's driveway, I think about trying to get a team together. It hasn't been started in two years, but it looks much better than this one (but it's not the x-11).

    It is interesting; even my jaded eye will be watching it. But a minor editorial correction. Never use the words Chevy Citation and then superiority together. It's like herring flavored ice cream. No. KTHXBY.

    A car like this is the reason that LeMons needs some kind of hall of fame, where the most horrific of cars can live on to disgust future generations. A car like this is too ugly to crush. I'm all for crushing Miata's and crappy E30's and other dime-a-dozen LeMons cars, but cars that are exceptionally rare because of how horrific they are should be kept for the novelty they provide.
